Problem-solving, digging deep into mysteries, investigation, meticulous attention to details and courage – if all this comes naturally to you, coupled with the belief of treading the less-travelled path, private investigation might be your calling. Add to it a strong sense of integrity and a taste for adventure and risk-taking, and you know for sure what you are meant to do.

If you have always loved the adventures and cases of Sherlock Holmes, Byomkesh Bakshi, Hercule Poirot, Feluda and the likes, it is an added bonus and it means you have your theory right. All that needs to be done now is the application of your knowledge into situations which demand speedy inferences and investigations.

Job profile

No wonder Hercule Poirot, Inspector Dalgleish, Inspector Clouseau, Cordelia Gray, our beloved Sherlock Holmes and his Indian counterpart Feluda have brought glory and glamour to the profession of investigation, we need to get to the nitty-gritties. This is a job similar to and different from that of a policeman.

As a detective, you are supposed to investigate spurious events (mostly of a criminal nature), and other such suspicious activities. The work encompasses digging facts by putting your communication skills to the best use: making enquiries using various techniques, without the knowledge of the person being pursued, or in other words, undercover investigations. The job may take the form of an independent detective solving a case on his own, or assisting lawyers, businesses, insurance companies, investors and the public.

Projects include surveillance, fraud investigation, tracing missing persons, investigating commercial piracy, private matrimonial/business alliances’ preliminary investigation, among several others.

Qualifications and Institutes

Apart from working knowledge of the law, computer skills etc, a graduate degree is taken as basic qualification. The following combinations of courses provide the requisite skills:

 1. Dr B R Ambedkar University, Agra — MSc Forensic Science (www.dbrau.ac.in)
 1. University of Mysore — MA in Criminology and Forensics (www.uni-mysore.ac.in)
 1. National Institute of Criminology — Master’s in Criminology (www.nicfs.nic.in)
 1. The Indore Christian College, Indore (www.indorechristiancollege.com)
 1. The National Institute of Private Investigation, New Delhi
 2. Lancers Network Limited, New Delhi

Remuneration

In a private investigation agency starting salary would be somewhere between Rs. 6,000 to Rs.15,000 per month or between Rs. 1,25,000 to Rs. 2,50,000 per annum. An experienced private detective with repute may earn higher and have unlimited perks. Corporate Investigations can fetch Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh per annum.

Acquiring a leadership managerial position or setting up one’s own agency becomes viable after a few years only, once you have established an array of clients and contacts. That said, this profession did feature in Forbes’ list of “surprisingly low-paid jobs”.

Why is it offbeat?

This is one profession that never loses its charm, whatever the era be. The element of uncertainty and adventure only enhances its challenges as sophisticated technology enters the picture and makes it even more complex.

Another factor that makes this profession unusual is that there are no defined contours to which the job profile is confined. A private detective handles many cases of burglary, extortion, theft, suicide, kidnapping, fraud, murder, rape, forgery, molestation, eve teasing, family cases, undercover operations, copyright infringement cases, cyber-crime, so on and so forth.

Scope

As pointed out earlier, setting up one’s own agency becomes viable after a few years only, once you have established an array of clients and contacts. So, for starting out by working for some agency, a list of potential employers can be found on the websites of the Association of Private Detectives and Investigators, Council of International Investigators and World Association of Detectives.

Each year Delhi University fest season comes in as a carnival, abuzz with delightful events and competitions and attracts thousands from the University. The most awaited of all these events are the star performances and celebrity visits. We bring to you a wishlist of certain celebrities who should visit Delhi University this fest season.

Kapil Sharma- the King of Comedy

He is the most loved comedian and TV host. His knack for humour, wit and sarcasm makes him the best ingredient to spice up the star night at any DU fest.

The dialogues of his show like “Babaji ka thullu” and “Ittu sa” have already made their way into the dictionary of DU students. We sincerely hope he does not give a “thullu” to our fests.

Shahrukh Khan –the Badshaah of Bollywood

The name ‘SRK’ makes every heart sing “Dil Toh Pagal hai” and “Tujhe Dekha toh Yeh Jaana Sanam” with open arms for him. This famous alumnus of Hans Raj College has surprisingly not visited Delhi University yet. He has a humungous female following while boys admire him for his charisma. People love him with passionate insanity in the campus.

Whenever we talk about Hans Raj’s Lovers’ Point, the first thing that comes to our mind is that it is the very same point where Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan (LSR alumnus) nurtured their love. It is almost every DUite’s dream to see him back in the campus. With his upcoming movie ‘Fan’, there are chances of him visiting us for promotions.

Virat Kohli- the bad boy of Indian cricket

A heartthrob of many Delhi University girls, Virat Kohli at 26 has done way more than most of us would do in our entire lifetime. His I-don’t-care attitude is the most attractive thing about him which boys envy and girls adore.

One glimpse of his million-dollar smile & six-packs can make girls of Gargi, LSR, KNC and Miranda House swoon over him. His impeccable fashion sense and amazing moves (even off the pitch) are something that makes him a youth icon.

(Don’t you guys worry, Anushkha Sharma comes complementary too!)

Yo Yo Honey Singh

This celebrity on our wishlist has been to DU before at Ramjas College in 2012. The fact remains that Yo Yo Honey Singh is still in demand at Delhi University. Students here are all ready for the ‘Love Dose‘ by this ‘Desi Kalakaar’.

The ‘Blue Eyes’ star has been a controversial performer since his last performance here, but his fans here wait eagerly for his next arrival.

Even after 11 years of its closure, F.R.I.E.N.D.S the american television sitcom still is the most beloved show of all times. Major population at Delhi University has had re-runs of all the ten seasons of this show on their laptops. Students who variedly relate to different characters of the show, will surely be excited to see the cast of ‘Friends’ in Delhi University.

“So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job’s a joke, you’re a broke, your love life’s D.O.A
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear

The music lovers this season, are basking in the bliss of a caressing melodies or dancing to the beats of EDM. There’s plenty of symphony to look forward to in the next 12 months. While fans are all hoping for Rihanna, Drake, One Direction and DemiLovato to come out with an album, it is all a conjecture.

There are those that we know for sure, and here we go with the most anticipated of them all:

Adele: 25

The Skyfall singer kept her fans anticipating a new album in 2014. When that didn’t happen, fans were consoled citing a 2015 release. Now that 2015 is here in its full glory, here’s hoping that we soon get to hear more from the woman whose last album 21 shattered sales records, topping the Billboard 200 in the U.S. for 19 weeks and also being the best worldwide selling album in both 2012 and 2013. Until we know for sure, let’s keep playing the game of “Will she, wont she?”

Hardwell: United We Are

The album has been in news for two years now. Hardwell has been voted the number one DJ in the world two times in a row now, which justifies the excitement that his announcement of releasing the album this January has set into motion. The album will have 14 tracks and will feature artists like Jason Derulo, Tiësto, Mr. Probz and W&W.

Sleater-Kinney: No Cities to Love

Their new, unexpected album comes across as brimming with palpable excitement, passion and bloodlust. This all-female rock band is back with a bang, no exaggeration. The beloved trio is expected to come back in the first month of the year.

Madonna: Rebel Heart

Having already released six finished songs, including the single “Live for Love,” she announced that the whole album would arrive in just three months. No wonder, though it is ridden with controversies.

Imagine Dragons: Smoke and Mirrors

February 17th is when we anticipate to relive the magic of Night Visions, or atleast we hope to. Reynoldssaid in an interview quoted, “We embraced a lot of hip-hop influences with Night Visions, but I think the next record will be more rock-driven. It’s too early to say, but there is some weird stuff going on in these songs.”
Here’s hoping that it is a good-weird.

Madeon: Adventure

The you-tube superstar thinks that the name will make a lot more sense once we listen to it. So, we are all waiting for the album. His singles are a testimony to his production finesse, no wonder we are waiting to listen how it has gone in his debut album.

Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams

As much as it breaks our hearts to think that this might be their last album, it also increases the delirium with which we await its arrival. We will also make sure that we make the best of it, just in case, they cease to perform live too!

Bob Dylan: Shadows in the night

Columbia Records announced that Bob Dylan’s next studio album comes out on February 3rd. The chairman at Columbia Records says that Bob has managed to find a way to infuse these songs with new life and contemporary relevance. Dylan himself admits it was a privilege to make the album. It would equally be a privilege to hear it out.

The Decemberists: What a terrible world, What a beautiful world

Yet another one coming out which has a track list that includes The Singer Addresses His Audience, Make You Better, Lake Song, Till the Water is All Long Gone, Easy Come, Easy Go etc.

Papa Roach: F.E.A.R

Set to release on 27th this month, singles from this album are already out. Name of the album and its songs has us all in feverish excitement over its full release.

Marilyn Manson: The Pale emperor and Joey Bada$$: B4.Da.$$

Two more additions to the January releases are TPE’s alleged ‘cinematic sound’ which does little to help us contain our excitement and B4.Da.$$ which is pronounced as Before the Money.

(With inputs from Ishani Rajkhowa and Iresh Gupta)

I have a guy in my life who is my best friend. We both have feelings for each other and we both know it too but we don’t like any kind of “relationship thing”. Should we get in a relationship or not?

Ahhh, young love! Sounds as sweet as my banana cake! How we used to fall for the ones closest to us. But Amma also remembers the drama over splitting our idly batter later, gaah! Nostalgia aside, my love struck macchis, you both need to talk it out with each other and decide upon a way to share your uttapam! Relationships do come with commitment, but it also makes you exclusive for each other.

On the contrary there are other ways too, like being open to different chutneys around you and still sharing the same uttapam. Confused? Well, Amma is simply referring to an open relationship (happens to be Amma’s favourite) or a ‘friends with benefits’ for the more ‘spicy’ kind. You could also ‘taste’ the waters by trying dating without putting a label on it and see if it works out.

In the end, it’s between the two of you and you need to talk to one another and find the right mix of flavors! If you both make a conscious decision to try out dating without letting it affect your friendship, then you can consider it. If you’d rather not risk it, then stick as best friends!

Do you have a question you’d like Amma to answer? Ask her anonymously!

The 72 Hour Project, an initiative by Old Cheese is a residential three day conference which aims at providing a one-on-one interaction and some meaningful workshops for those who tend to think out-of-the-box and have done well in their respective fields.

It will be held from 24th to 26th of January at the Lemon Tree Premier, Leisure Valley, located in the City Center of Gurgaon (Sector 29, HUDA). The event consists of Speaker Sessions by various veterans of multiple arenas like Avijit Dutt (Indian Cinema), Dia Mirza (Indian Cinema), Garima Avtar (F1 Racer), K. Mohan (Agnee Band), Pramod Bhasin (Genpact), Rajiv Makhni (NDTV), Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (Indian Cinema), Suhel Seth (Counselage India) and Utsav Mitra (Indian Government).

The three day event includes Module Training Sessions which will be taught via a case study method in partnership with global brands and organizations by eminent faculties like Management Practices-MDI Gurgaon, Marketing Management- Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, Public Policy- Jindal Global University and Financial Education- Bombay Stock Exchange.

The Time Capsule Sessions, a combination of Speaker Sessions, Workshops and Modules, will have philosophy sessions by Siddharth Sharma of Success Monks, Power of Media by Anshul Tewari of Youth Ki Awaaz fame and Travel Journalism by Ankita Sinha, a Travel Blogger.

The third venture in the 72 hour cycle will be the workshops which will be widely-spread out to cover almost all interesting activities and provide skills and fun, namely, Visual Communications (Akshar Pathak), Film Making (The Free Spirit Project), Performing Arts (Soul to Sole Dance Academy), Leadership and Group Dynamics (Rhea D’Souza).

Additionally, the Adidas’ 10km The Adi Pro Run in Gurgaon will be held on the morning of 25th January. Last but not the least, will be The Originals Evening and Adidas Originals will be there on 25th January 2015 to end the event on a lighter and more vibrant note.

Talking about the idea behind the event, Shoury Gupta and Pranav Obhrai, founders of the 72 hour project and Old Cheese Media said, “We all are trying to decide what we want to do in life. But many times we simply follow the head without knowing what we are headed for. To help discover one’s true interests, to try out different art forms and engage with wonderful co-delegates and personalities, is the rationale behind the 72 Hour Project.”

dfffffffr Check out your datesheet here: Erstwhile FYUP batch, click here. Regular 3 year batch (Class of 2012 and 2014), click, here. Also, the date for the EVS exam for the students admitted in the batch of 2014-15 is scheduled to be conducted on May 22nd, 2015. This date sheet is meant for those students who could not appear in Semester-I Exams November- December-2014 for this paper in particular.]]>

th semester too faces the one year long unfortunate wait to attain their degree. While Delhi University provides 2 opportunities to students of first and second year to clear their backlog (odd semester back in the forthcoming odd semesters and even semester ones in the future even semesters), that is not the case with final year students who have to wait for 6 more months (in case of 5th semester) and one more year (for 6th semester) after completion of their three years in college. This issue, although unnoticed yet, has now become the subject of a petition to the University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh. The petition has been filed by two students from Mata Sundri College, both fifth semester students with backlogs. They have demanded supplementary exams to be conducted within the successive semester for 5th semester students and within a month itself for 6th semester.

“We had included the issues of revaluation, special chance and supplementary exams in our agenda during the DUSU elections 2014-15 itself, out of which work has begun on the matter of revaluation. Although the other two demands were earlier refused by the university, we plan to organize a number of protests to achieve a green signal for the same in case of a negative verdict or lack of response to our letters. We assure the students our full support for the cause”, said Saket Bahuguna State Secretary, ABVP, Delhi and Navdeep Choudhary State Joint Secretary, ABVP, Delhi.
According to Shradha Chawla, Mr. Prashant Nagar, Assistant Controller of Exams has refused to make any changes in the existing system. The reaction of the Vice Chancellor on the issue is still awaited. The petition can be found on the internet and is being signed by thousands of students to support the cause. “Studying in a premier institution such as Delhi University brings upon a lot of pride for students to pursue further studies abroad or in various other renowned institutions. However, a backlog in even one subject not only wastes a year but also puts an end to or delays the scope of such future prospects that can channel their lives for a better tomorrow. Thereby I strongly speak for the petition to allow supplementary exams and rid the final year students of such adverse circumstances”, said Aanchal Jain from 6th semester, Motilal Nehru College. ]]>

The Jaipur Literature Festival is not only Asia’s largest literary festival but also one of the most favoured destinations for college excursions, especially among students of Humanities. Apart from boasting of a fantastic entourage of scholars and writers from across the world, the festival also has in its store musical nights that see performances by artists from Coke Studio drawing huge student fan base.

Here is a list of pocket friendly essentials that will make the festival more accessible to students:

1. Getting to Jaipur

 • Alternative One – By Bus

The Bikaner House at India Gate and the ISBT have buses at regular intervals commuting between Delhi and Jaipur. While the AC buses will charge around INR 600, the non AC bus will charge approximately INR 300-400. The most preferred journey is overnight bus travel.

 • Alternative Two – By Road

The Delhi-Jaipur National Highway 8 is a well maintained route and a very favored route among routine travelers. The journey takes about 5-6 hours.

The ‘by road’ map of Delhi – Jaipur travel, estimated time, alternative routes and toll barriers. Courtesy: Google Maps

 • Alternative Three- By Train

The easiest and cheapest mode of commutation is the double-decker train, charging INR 500. The train leaves Delhi in the evening and takes about 5-6 hours to reach, and leaves Jaipur early morning to reach Delhi by 9 usually. Apart from that, numerous long route trains to mumbai have Jaipur as their halt station.

2. Weather in Jaipur

The weather of Jaipur is largely like that of New Delhi’s. However, following is the forecast by Weather Channel for the 4 days the Literature Festival is going on.

Untitled

3. Staying at Jaipur

Jaipur is a city where you can find hotel rooms ranging from INR 600-2000.

 • Alternative One -Hotel Aditya

Slightly on the expensive side, this hotel is a well reputed and safe place to stay and offers good accommodation. An average room costs about INR 3000 for 2 persons

 • Alternative Two – Government guest houses

There are several guesthouses in Jaipur that are well within the pocket and offer comfortable stays. They are quite popular with students as they are easy on the budget and are reliable too.

To everyone visiting/planning to visit Jaipur Literature Festival 2015, all the best, enjoy, hope the essentials come handy for you!
