During the Biology exam in SGTB Khalsa College on Monday, 8th December 2014, six students were caught cheating, pointing at paper leak possibilities. The Delhi University officials have received the information about the cheating case.

Reportedly, there were two incidents, one in which two students were using unfair means of information inside the examination hall and the other six students were caught with the photographs of the same question paper in their smart phones while the exam was happening.

Malay Neerav, the media coordinator of DU told The Hindu that in the first incident, the students were found to have answers supplied to them by someone from outside. While in the second case, the students who were not even supposed to sit for exams were seen outside the examination hall. When investigated, they were caught with the copies of the question paper in their phones.

Although a no tolerance policy against the caught students has been put forward by Mr. Neerav, there hasn’t been any FIR registered on the case.

“The exam disciplinary committee will take appropriate action against the students who were found cheating inside the examination hall. But the University cannot do anything about the non-examinee students . It is a criminal activity and it is up to the college to hand over the case too an investigating authority.”  Malay told Hindustan Times.

Jaswinder Singh, the college principal has also confirmed the cheating incident.

FYUP? No FYUP? Wait, Dr. Dinesh Singh refuses to budge. FYUP. Well now, Ministry of Human Resource Development refuses to budge. No FYUP!

It was late June when (thanks to the media, and the DU Vice Chancellor, and UGC Chairperson, and the MHRD) the Four Year Undergraduate Program had bagged all headlines. It was the one thing that everyone, and especially experts, was talking about. Meanwhile, we, the current first year students were in a dilemma of our own. And at one point of time, FYUP or no FYUP ceased to matter. Could we just get into college already?

Amidst the highly ‘inflated’ first cut off and chaos about the course structure, the 2014-17 (yes, no FYUP!) batch joined with a disturbing uncertainty. The teachers too were waiting, hoping, expecting for a response from the University officials- as if not knowing where and how to begin wasn’t confusing enough.

While most of us spent this time bonding with new comrades or grabbing a bite at the newly-discovered canteens; there were others who questioned themselves if it was a wise decision to join India’s top-rated university. Finally, sanity returned after two weeks of the ‘going-to-college-and-not-knowing-what-to-do’ mode. Course meetings, department meetings, principal-staff meetings… College seemed just like that in the movies- going out with your friends as much as you want, other things could always wait!

But the ‘other things’ couldn’t wait anymore. With the course finally adopting back its original structure, students were seen rushing to stationery shops buying whatever readings/books they could get hold of. After a stumpy beginning, the course kick-started itself and things weren’t the same anymore. Back-to-back classes, tutorials, extra classes (which usually turned out to be mass bunks), -Internals-, mid-semester break, -Internals-, Diwali-break, -Internals- and then some more Internals.

And just when things in college had started to make sense, semester examinations stood staring right into our eyes. Wait, where did the semester go? More than that, are we ready to give the first examinations of the university? The struggle to catch up with attendance has turned into a battle for some, while the other minority of the population is all set for the examinations with the entire course done (and mind you, revised too!)
Irrespective of all turmoil in the beginning, the semester fared out to be a memorable one. With outstation students discovering a whole new world in Delhi, each of us realised the enigma of being in the top ranked university of India. And even though there are things to be bothered about (yes, exams!), just being a part of the University of Delhi brings a contentment of its own.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Sri Venkateswara College (Venky) was founded in 1961 by Durgabai Deshmukh, a former member of the Constituent Assembly of India. The first building of the college was set up at Rouse Avenue (now Deen Dyal Uppadhyay Marg near ITO). The college shifted to its present location (Dhaula Kuan) later in the founding year itself and was inaugurated by former President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Venky, as it is fondly called, is situated in the heart of South Campus with colleges like Ram Lal Anand and Motilal Nehru around it. Located almost at the centre of South and West Delhi, connectivity via bus has never been a problem for the students. The nearest metro station is AIIMS and students travelling by the metro have to tackle the occasional traffic on the Ring Road to reach college.

Satya Niketan which has eating joints like Big Yellow Door (BYD), QDs, CCD, Chowringhee Lane is situated right across the college. Students have various options to hangout after college like Sarojini Nagar, PVR Priya, Rajouri Garden and INA.

Venky’s canteen is tad overrated. The canteen is situated in the open and can be a real mess during the monsoon season. It is usually filled with political party goons, over enthusiastic first years and happy-go-lucky students. Due to regular change of the contractor, it is difficult to pick the most edible food item on the menu. However, the chole bhature, samose and chilly potato can satisfy the rats inside one’s stomach anytime.

The college features a wide range of societies, some of them being Nritya (Choreography Society), Verve (Western Dance Society), Verbum(English Dramatics), Anubuti (Hindi Dramatics) and Effulgence (Film and Photography Society). Other than these, students can also join societies like E-Cell, Placement Cell, Blue Chip Society and the Parivartan Society to nurture their innate talents. Venky has dedicated cricket, football and basketball teams as well.

Nexus, the annual cultural fest of Venky is one of the most awaited college fests in DU. While rock bands like Parikrama, Pentagram and Junkyard Grooves have performed in the past, pop star Jazzy B has also brought the Punjabi flavor to this three-day long fest. This fest also features its one of a kind Sufi night which is held in parallel to the rock night, thus, satisfying both kind of music lovers at once.

The college’s administration is little tardy and is divided into two kinds of people. The first being ‘keep calm’ brigade and other being ‘we don’t give a damn about your issue’ crew. Booking a room for an event can be a real mess. With lack of better equipments in the seminar room, the famous Uday Bhaiya is always at your rescue.
The college campus is pretty spacious and is mainly divided into two blocks- Arts and Science. As most of the non-Venky people don’t know, the college has a temple situated inside the campus. Other than the canteen, students are frequently found hanging out in Audi Lawns or the foyer. The college’s main ground religiously turns into a picnic spot during the winters. The under-constructed auditorium was inaugurated a year back and is yet to be fully functional.

Going by academics, Venky is considered one of the best colleges in DU for Science and Commerce courses. With advanced laboratories and experienced staff, Venky is a go-to for students who aim to pursue science courses like Biochemistry, Botany etc. Economics is also a sought after course at Venky.

The college is also sometimes referred as the ‘SRCC of South Campus’. The campus is filled with energy and enthusiasm as students are pretty carefree and like to live in the moment. With little flaws here and there, Venky is a complete package of academics, drama and life!

It is sad how in today’s day and age, our knowledge about things around us tends to be highly textual. The only trivia that has ever mattered to us is the kind they often test us on in general knowledge aptitude tests or quizzes. However, there is something really exciting about the uninitiated. In fact, trivia about otherwise mundane things is enough to spark a person’s interest in that area!

So to trigger your interest, here are five fun facts about the Indian Railways:

The IR Mascot

The official IR mascot is an elephant named ‘Bholu’. He was designed by the National Institute of Design, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Indian Railways. Bholu is presented as a train guard holding a signal lamp with a green light in one hand. The green light is the symbol of movement which assures trains and passengers to go ahead with safety and without fear.
The next time you travel by the Indian Railways, do keep an eye out for the Bholu insignia!

UNESCO World Heritage Site

There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites connected to the Indian Railways – The Mountain Railways of India and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Teminus which was formerly known as Victoria Terminus. The Victoria Terminus is an amazing blend of Gothic art with Indian architecture. The Indian Mountain Railways includes three railways – the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways, Nilgiri Mountain Railways and Kalka Shimla Railway. All three railways established more than a hundred years ago are fully operational to this day.
Remember the train scenes from Jab We Met and Barfi? They were shot on the Darjeeling and Shimla line respectively.

Extremeties

Northernmost railway station is Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir. Westernmost is Naliya near Bhuj in Gujarat. Southernmost railway station is Kanyakumari, while the last station on the east of India is Ledo on branch line from Tinsukia.

Resonance Frequency

The railway coach is designed with a resonance frequency of suspension of 1.2 Hz.This is the same frequency that the human body is most comfortable with.
This is probably the reason why most people sleep easily during train journeys!

Monetary Compensation

Now, a lot of us have this tendency of associating government jobs with low salary. But, it’s highly interesting to note, that an average loco pilot a.k.a train driver earns more than a lot of people in the private sector. For example, a loco pilot on the Rajdhani Express earns around 1 lakh per month.

After a two month internship for a content writing firm I had to ask myself how I could utilize the rest of my summer vacations. So I browsed through internship listings at Internshala. I stumbled upon another content writing internship; I was interested in it because it focused on social media marketing. I immediately sent them my CV and two days later I was called for an interview. After cracking the interview I ended up interning in this small Noida based social media marketing firm for 3 months.

Here are 5 reasons why I feel that internships in start -ups and smaller firms are as important as internships in big companies.

A new cup of tea: A first year student or a sophomore aiming to open his books should start as an intern in a start-up. This fresh cup of tea will be a piping hot experience as you will be a part of a new organisation. A new organisation is not only set to provide you with new opportunities but is sure to lay a patient ear to your ideas. If you are fairly dedicated you might end up being a permanent employee there.

A phenomenon called ‘Practical experience’ – The first thing an interviewer asks you after your ‘introduction’ is about the kind of experience you have in this field. Well it’s more than necessary and apt that you join a smaller firm to contribute to its daily proceedings. Why so? Well, at the end of the day this ‘practical experience’ makes you a better, more open and a mature human being who has the capability to adapt to situations in the most complex of situations.

Exploring new avenues when you are confused – After entering the social media/blogging market as an intern, I feel immense joy in the pleasure of writing and expressing myself in personal and commercial blogs. In a similar way you should explore different avenues and decide what you want to do in your future. Joining as an intern for various firms in various fields can bring the best out of you and make you aware of the possibilities in the line you are most interested working in.

Relaxed work culture– I remember the first internship I did, way back when I was in first year. I was being heckled and bombarded by peers who explained to me the importance of internships. However, I was more skeptic about the interviews. I was skeptic of how the internship would be and the nature of it. I sent a mail to an NGO offering research analyst internships. I was happy to see that it was a start-up NGO. It would not be wrong to say that the amount I have learnt from that NGO is incomparable owing to their capability of providing me with personal assistance and help whenever I needed it. There was more flexibility and the environment in general was relaxed. Plus you get to learn directly from founders and the main people running the organisation!

To ‘learn and earn’ simultaneously–While many think that start ups, due to lack of funds only provide unpaid internships, this is largely untrue. What is better than being able to learn new skill sets and earn at the same time? Rs. 5000– 10ooo stipend surely gets you a habit of earning. With this ‘money motivates me’ attitude you end up increasing the specifications in your internship. The more you earn the more established firm you end up joining. What is the most important part is that you learn along with such high monetary gain.

Joining an internship at a smaller business not only motivates you mentally but monetarily as well. It increases your capability and adaptability and as a result makes you a more open human being. Therefore interning for small scale firms, are as important and credible as tech giants and businesses.

Even after some 20 years of its release, ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ) is surprisingly still taking away its dulhania. The longest running Bollywood movie still manages to ignite romance every time some ‘I-am-obsessed-with-DDLJ’ fan watches it. Happily obsessed, this section of the crowd makes sure to degrade those who haven’t watched this movie even once. These people should be respectfully treated with a lot of disrespect, they say.

“Tune DDLJ nahi dekhi? Zinda hi kyun hai?”

For most of the student community here, this movie’s release (20th October 1995) falls in or around their year of birth. Most of us are Shahrukh fans and fantasize the life that he had in the movie. After all, travelling countries for a girl is not that mainstream!

While ShahRukh spent his college days in Delhi University (Hans Raj College), here are the lessons that students of the University should take from his movie. We bring the popular scenes of the movie too, for our readers to enjoy.

Disclaimer: Most of these are impossible and unrealistic. Or Shahrukh was just too lucky. Don’t dream around.

1. You can fail in your college and your dad will still be happy. He will have a celebration drink with you and will ask you to live the life he lived and allow you to go for the Europe Trip!

He is like, “Dimaag mein kitaabein bharne se jebein (pockets) thodi na bharti hai”

Yeah, right! Is your Dad this cool? NO!

2. You can roam around the whole Europe with just one backpack.

What is the big deal? One bag pack is enough for travelling to so many different locations. So if your dad allows you for a holiday after you fail, don’t worry – your entire wardrobe will fit into one bag.

3. Trust the Indian Railways! No matter what, your love will make it into the same compartment in which you are.

DDLJ is known to have started many trends. This is one of them.

Even today, Delhi University students or all students infact are found getting clicked in this same pose at some random station around the country.

4. The worst pick up line!
Tumhe aankhon ko dekh kar mujhe kisi ki yaad aati hai, meri daadi ki.

Lagta hai maine tumhe kahin dekha hai Roma ki party mein? Sheetal ki party mein?

5. Bade Bade deshon mein chotti chotti baatein hoti rehti hai.

This line has been exploited and over used since then. With thousands of moulds, everyone just tries to fit this in, somewhere and somehow.

“Bade Bade exams mein chotte mote failures hote rehte hain”

No, boy. No.

6. Give a girl some alcohol on a chilly winter night and dance with her. Take her to a hotel. Fake lipstick marks and shabby clothes when she wakes up. Tell her that nothing happened, win her trust and she will fall for you.

-claps-

7. Are you confused if she loves you? Stand behind her and wait for her to turn around. If she does, good for you. If she doesn’t, go home.

The ‘Palat’ trend still has its good days. Has it worked for you?

8. Save Kuljit from a self-set trap and he will take you to your girlfriend’s house. All you need to do is tell him that  you have 10-20 million pounds.

This helps when you don’t know where she stays. What a way out!

Kuljit is like, “Yaar tune aaj mujhe khareed liya hai. Ab tu mere ghar mein rahega.”

Shahrukh – “Yaar tu itna force kar raha hai toh theek hai”

Like seriously Kuljit bro?

9. Girl’s father will always be strict and conservative. But he will give in by the end.
“Jaa Simran jaa, jee le apni zindagi”

“So don’t worry. Uncle jaise bhi hain, maan jayenge”

10. No one can become Raj!

Doesn’t matter if you are a millionare, no matter if you met her on the train, no matter if you slept in the same hotel room and no matter how you fall in love – The biggest lesson here is that you can not be the RAJ of DDLJ.

The movie will always live young in our hearts. Kyunki hum dilwale bhi kabhi dulhania le jayenge!

How I Met Your Mother came and touched our hearts. We laughed at all of Barney Stinson’s rather sexist jokes, aww-ed Lily and Marshal’s moments of love, admired Robin for all that she was and cried every time Ted Mosby was the ‘dumpee’ or the’ dumper’ whispering to ourselves that it is all going to be fine, the mother hasn’t been introduced yet.

We stayed up waiting and anticipating who the mother would be for so long that she ceased to be the perfect woman for Ted and turned into this perfect woman for all of us. Forget about the mother being liked by Ted and his gang, she now needed our approval.

Hence, it wasn’t very surprising when there was an outrage among fans with the way HIMYM came to an end. Robin and Barney’s marriage ends? The mother dies? Ted goes back to Robin? Umm, cliché much?
HIMYM basically gave us what we were rooting for since the beginning and which we let go finally after seasons, accepting fate.

If this wasn’t enough, the creators came up with an alternate ending which was leaked and then removed before anyone could actually see it but as the rumour goes, the alternate end does not bring back Robin and Ted, has a different voiceover by Ted and ends with Ted meeting the mother at the railway station. If this was an attempt by the creators to pacify the fans then they did not do a very good job.

Here’s one thing that all HIMYM fans were looking for, or at least I was – why Tracy? What was so special about the mother? The development of Ted and the mother as a couple, small glimpses of the mother in the initial ending with the major focus on Robin and a short conversation at a railway station does not suffice this.

We still don’t know how what Ted and the mother have is so amazing that all the other times he has been in “love” fades away and she becomes the mother.

Although the ending disappoints us feeding us the boring old love fable of ‘opposites attract’ and ‘first love is last love’ the show has entertained us for nine seasons and for that fact alone we accept it the way it comes with open arms, and maybe a little slap.

So you are very interested in studying human behaviour; psychology is your obvious choice. Knowing the widening scope of this subject, you decide to pursue your interest and take up psychology in your undergraduate level. The options that lay in front include clinical psychologist, school counsellor, organisational psychologist, researcher, and so on. What if you don’t want to go with the obvious options?
If this dilemma sounds familiar, it’s time we explore some other jobs that would not allow your degree and your initial interest to go to waste. Here are a few alternative career options related to psychology:

Special agent/detective

Sounds too unreal? Considering the high rates of crimes in the country as well as around the world, this job is exactly the need of the hour. If crimes are a bit too overboard for you, there are other areas as well. Usually detectives are hired in case of a divorce battle to spy and collect evidence against a partner, or gather information about a prospective groom/bride in case of an arranged marriage (or maybe even a love marriage if the parents are a suspicious lot), and during property battles and will rights.

Human Resource Manager

A Human Resource Manager understands the employers’ needs, analyses the resumes and job applications of various candidates and helps choose a suitable candidate for the job through interviews and tests. They also help companies formulate polices for the employees and aims at increasing their productivity and performance and because it takes skills like understanding of mind and behaviour, problem solving skills, etc., psychology majors are well-equipped for this job.

Social Worker

Now this is one career that will take care of your superego. A highly challenging yet rewarding career, social workers help society to overcome their problems and improve their lives. After a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, one can go for Masters of Social Work (MSW), which will enable them to provide therapies to distressed people.

Market Research Analyst and Marketing Manager

Maybe your mind is a bit inclined towards business and the market. A Market Research Analyst helps the company or organisation to study consumer preferences. They study trends and use statistical tools to research and analyse them. A Marketing Manager, on the other hand, is responsible for developing the company’s marketing strategy. They decide the target audience and how the product should be sold. Since psychology majors have good problem solving, critical thinking, communication and interpersonal skills, these high paying jobs seem apt for them.

Art Therapist

Remember the times when colours and crafts used to give you joy? Creating something new led to ‘peak experiences’? Art like drawing, painting, sculpting, etc. can be a useful therapeutic technique to treat stress, anxiety, psychological disorders as well as learning disabilities (Remember, Taare Zameen Par?), behavioural and social problems in children, adults, and the elderly. To start a career in this, however, one must be a licensed councellor, social worker or clinical psychologist.

Public Relations Agent

Ever dreamt of working with (or for) actors like Hritik Roshan, Deepika Padukone? Or maybe politicians? Well! How about being their Public Relations Agent? PR Agents are required to maintain a certain strategic image of their clients in front of the public. The clients can be individuals or big corporates. Needless to say, psychology has a major role to play in analysing public choices and opinions.

Design/Environment Psychologist

Did you know that if windows in a room are too small or the ceiling too low, people may actually feel cramped up? This is a basic introduction to the work of an environment psychologist. Work of an environment psychologist may include creating suitable interiors or maybe soothing outdoor setups, making it more fun. They study human reaction to their environment, how different settings affect their behaviour and emotions and make changes to suit the people better.

International Relations

International relations is the study of relationship among countries, International Governemental Organistions, International Non-Governmental Organisations, Multinational Corporationss, etc. It is a multidisciplinary subject, with psychology as a major aspect. So after a Bachelors degree in Psychology, one can go for a degree in International Relations. Jobs? Well, not much. You get to be part of Foreign Services, Government Agencies or can even join United Nations!

Media Psychologists

It is a well known fact that media plays a key role in shaping people’s behaviour and attitudes. Hence, psychology and media simply go hand in hand. Media psychology studies the affect of media on human perceptions, emotions, etc. They use the modes of media to improve human psychology and communications. Moreover, if certain portrayals of media are false, media psychologist help to correct it by providing the correct versions.

Food Psychologist

Slurp! This branch of psychology is as interesting as food itself. Food psychologist deal with understanding the relationship of food with people. Their main concerns is the food consumption pattern of individuals and its impact on their biological pattern and self perception. It also studies the impact of environment, culture and society on food preferences. Dealing with eating disorders like anaeroxia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating, obesity and others are also a part of this branch.

So you see, taking up Psychology actually opens up more fields than you can imagine. Every aspect of life has some psychology involved. And hence, it is needed everywhere. Good Luck, Folks! May you pick up what’s best for you!
