It’s Raksha Bandhan! A day sisters celebrate their brothers (usually from the same mother) and the special bond they share with them. Here are five types of brothers that we might have experienced in our lives:

The Cool Rockstar Brother– This brother is everything you want. He is normally elder to you and lets you have all the fun in the world, but takes care of you just the same. He earns and showers you with gifts all year round. Kinda hard to come by.

The Annoying Little Brother– HE WANTS EVERYTHING. Whatever you own, whatever you want to own, everything. He’s a cry-baby and would pester your parents relentlessly till you give him what you want. Normally younger to you, so a smack on the back can set him just right.

vd
The Young Diva- This one is the absolute favourite of all sisters. He doesn’t give into the social norms of being masculine and tough. He will go out shopping with you and would probably try on your new heels before you do. He is more like a best friend who would keep your secrets perfectly safe, no matter how bad a fight was last night. This is the type you simply adore.

The Over-protective Elder Brother– Probably the most common and recognised of the whole species. He absolutely adores and spoils you, but would not stand anybody who hurts his little sister. He won’t tell you that he loves you, but his actions will always make you feel loved.

over protective

The Teacher– This one will miss no opportunity to tell you where you went wrong and what you could have done. It’s not because he hates you or anything, quite the opposite, he loves you and wants you to have all that you deserve and more.

1) ROSS-MONICA(David Schimmer-Courteney Cox) in the American sitcom FRIENDS

One of the oldest brother-sister pairs that our generation has witnessed, Ross and Monica Geller, who otherwise live like, well, friends, do present sibling-like rivalry and affection every now and then. Their relationship is more brotherly than brother-sister-like in my opinion as is evident from the fact that they wrestled each other during their childhood and even played sports, particularly football (until one day Monica accidentally broke Ross’s nose). Ross was also traumatized by nightmares of his then overweight sister eating him up. Yet, these nightmares did not prevent their attachment from surfacing. They had come up with a dance in their primary school called “The Routine” and also had a childhood gesture-knocking their fists together with their thumbs pointing outwards. They, I feel, have the perfect recipe for the best bro-sis relationship imaginable.

2)RON-GINNY( Rupert Grint-Bonnie Wright) in the Harrry Potter series

This pair is certainly the one we have grown up with (We were all surprised to see the little Ginny from the first movie turn out to be  a hottie by the 6th one). Coming to their relationship, this bro-sis duo are absolutely opposite in characters. Ron being submissive, insecure and funny, Ginny has been portrayed as strong-headed and sober. While Ron wears his heart on his sleeves before finally realising his love for Hermione years later, Ginny stays true to her crush on Harry Potter right from the time they first met. Despite of it, it is inevitable to notice the bond between the two.

Ron shines as a typical protective brother right from the second installment when he, along with Harry, rescues her from Tom Riddle. This protectiveness is further highlighted in the 6th installment when he sees his sister kissing her boyfriend Dean. The thing that they have in common though is their loyalty towards Potter for whom they fight alongside him against the fearsome Voldemort till the very end. Also to be mentioned, during their initial years in Hogwarts, Ron, like a typical elder brother, would shoo away his kid sister when with his friends to prevent embarrassment. However, with time and maturity he accepted her as a part of their “gang” and also his best friend’s girlfriend.

3) MILEY-JACKSON( Miley Cyrus- Jason Earles) in the TV series Hannah Montana

Miley: Next time try something with sleeves and deodorant.

Jackson: If you got it flaunt it!

Arguably the funniest bro-sis in the history of TV series. Jackson, jealous of his sister’s stardom and yet loving enough to keep her secret, is a fun, indifferent and crazy guy who does not refrain from using Hannah’s fame to get dates but without compromising on Miley’s privacy. Not the ideal brother(specially for us “highly cultured” Indians) due to his over-the-top behavior and being a constant irritant to his sister, Jackson still manages to jump up to his sister’s rescue whenever needed despite of himself.

4) ANNA-SANDY( Arjun Rampal-Deepika Padukone) in Housefull

Perhaps the most feared brother of Bollywood till date, this brother who is a parental figure to his sisters Pooja and Sandy is also a strict Indian Military Intelligence officer and hence treats everyone(except his sisters) as suspects for “no one knows which” crime. At the top of his hit-list is Arush, Sandy’s boyfriend, but that of course is natural of any brother to be protective of his beloved sister. That protection gets blown out of proportions when the brother is Major Krishna Rao. However, in the end, his officer instincts give way to his emotions when he discovers Arush to be a gem of a person for his sister despite his ” misfortune” taking the limelight.

5) MILKHA SINGH-ISRI KAUR( Farhan Akhtar- Divya Dutta) in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Isri, Milkha’s elder sister is one of the central characters in the film and the driving force behind his success. This duo is unique in the sense that there are no scenes of sibling rivalry or “nok-jhok”  between them to provide comic relief; their relation was purely intense, emotional and moving. While Isri nursed Milkha like her child, he in turn dedicated his success to her by making her wear his much awaited jacket of the Indian national team. The perfect example of loyalty and emotions between siblings.

6) RANVIJAY-VEERA( Shivin Narang-Digangana Suryavanshi) in Ek Veer Ki Ardaas….Veera

The name says it all, “A Brother’s Prayer….Veera”. The story revolves around the unbreakable bond between Ranvijay and his half sister Veera. Being neglected by her step-mother, Veera’s struggle begins right from a tender age, while, to her relief, Ranvijay acts like  a sensible, matured brother even when they both were too young to understand the value of the brother-sister relationship. Apart from being a mother-figure to Veera, he pushes her towards her goals amidst his own personal and professional challenges. He, indeed, is the ideal brother for every sister.

7) HANSEL-GRETEL( Jeremy Renner-Gemma Arterton) in Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters

This is probably the coolest bro-sis duo, engaged in the profession we all would love to have – witch hunting! There is not much scope of brother-sister emotions in the movie as it is highly action packed and they are busy slaughtering dark witches throughout. However, their unity is unquestioned as they face all the perils together, saving each other from the clutches of the antagonists.

Club for Leadership, Innovation and Finance (CLIF) conducted the second Shri Ram Leadership Summit on Thursday, 7th August. The event scheduled to start at 9.30am kept the massive crowd waiting to be exhilarated by the intellect of MP and former Cabinet Minister, Dr. Shashi Tharoor.

SRCC Summit 2

Mr. Amit Garg, Operations and Collection Manager, General Electrics (Asia Pacific) kick started the event with a touching “Namaste” and enlightened the audience with the real difference between the terms “spirituality” and “religion”. A firm believer of spirituality, he is the Chairman of Satyug Darshan Technical Campus which provides education at three levels – theoretical, practical and spiritual. He further spoke about the four pillars that make up a leader- Dream big, Scrap shortcut, Perseverance and Develop Integrity.  He also mentioned the importance of “Smart Goals” or specific goals that are realistic and time bound and also about the need to keep a check on our progress towards them. SUCCESS = IDEA + SPEED + DELIVERY, this is the equation that Mr. Garg professes, and so does he profess the thought, ” You cannot discover oceans if you are afraid to lose sight of the shore”.  The core of these ideologies is that any idea is a waste unless acted upon in due time and one cannot act upon such ideas unless they develop the courage to do so.

A short documentary on the CBI was shown in order to pave the entry of CBI Director, Mr. Ranjit Sinha who briefly spoke about corruption and the autonomy of CBI. The third in line to speak was IPS & DCP Delhi Police, Mr. Madhur Verma who addressed the issues of women safety and implementation of Project Parivartan to impart self defense training to women. He concluded by expressing his delight on his wife being a former student of the very college in which he, today, stood as an esteemed guest.

SRCC summit 1

At last, Dr. Shashi Tharoor addressed the audience with his charismatic views on leadership stating specifically that there are basically two types of leaders – one whom the masses merely hear, applaud and forget; while the other being the one whom people listen to, admire and follow.  He encouraged questions from the audience, the one which raised most eyebrows being, “Have you ever done anything regretful in your personal life?”  To everyone’s amazement, Dr. Tharoor patiently replied that people do make regretful decisions in their personal and political lives. However, he refused to disclose any such incident. With this, the event came to a close.

A trip back to the homeland recently had me meeting a junior of mine, who had just taken admission in the University. We got to talking and she mentioned how disappointed she was that she could not get the college of her choice and instead had to take admission in a ‘loser’ college, or so she thinks. To make matters worse, her best friend got admission in the college my junior had been lusting after. The jealousy was killing the poor kid to the point that she called the admission a ‘lucky’ situation.

This incident got me thinking of how jealousy crops in every point of our life. We are jealous of people who get better grades, have better looking boyfriends, and freedom to attend late night parties and our jealousy reaches to the point that we become resentful in our thoughts towards them and wish nasty things to happen to them. In the situation above, the girl’s jealousy has soured the once dear friendship.

I was and still am jealous; it’s hard not to be. There is always someone upping you in the game. What we have to realize is that we have the ability to convert our jealousy into something productive by learning from it. Harboring the negative energy is like poison coagulating inside. It will slowly kill the optimism and take over your thoughts, in the manner that now others achievements become your priority leaving no space for yourself.

The solution, if there is one, is to create opportunities for your own self. I joined the Gym the other day after the realization that scrolling through fitness regimes on Tumblr is not taking me anywhere. The junior and I also came up with a solution for her situation; one is to first give her college mates a chance. They could probably be the best thing that happened to her. Another was to look for opportunities outside the college. She had been into social work during school, so joining a non-governmental organization came on the list; working for a cause gives you the profound satisfaction of doing something meaningful. I also suggested she either take up learning a new language or a dance form or any activity which she had been fancying but never tried. Three years of college is a long time to work towards the unachievable- perfection.

The junior of mine has accepted her situation. She is going to channel all the energy fuelled by jealousy into creating bigger opportunities for her. More success to her and all of us who have the green eye.

For many of the students out there who didn’t get through the college of their choice during their admissions in Delhi University, they still have a chance to be there under the migration norms of University of Delhi. According to this rule, students from one college are allowed to change their college in their second academic year. For inter college migration, the rules are-

  1. A student can migrate from one college of Delhi University to another in his/her third semester of B.A, B.Com., B.Sc., B.A.(H), B.Com(H) and B.Sc(H) courses considering the availability of seats and consent of principals of both the colleges.
  2. The eligibility criterion for the candidates requires them to have passed in both 1st and 2nd semester exams of the degree course under semester mode.
  3. The process to apply for migration includes contacting the office of the principal of the concerned college where he/she wants to migrate to obtain the no objection certificate first.
  4. The last date to apply for migration is 31st August, although the tentative dates for actual migration are issued by the University of Delhi.
  5. The documents required for migration are, (a) A No Objection Certificate from the principal/head of the College where he/she wants to migrate as well as where he/she is currently studying, (b) A leaving certificate from the principal/head of the concerned college and (c) The mark sheets of the examination already passed.

There are certain terms and conditions that are followed in the process of migration, which are-

  1. Candidates are not allowed from regular college to School of Open Learning (SOL) or Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) as migration is allowed in semester mode and the SOL and NCWEB are in annual mode.
  2. Migration is not allowed from one college to another in a different course.
  3. Migration is not allowed at Post Graduation level.
  4. Applications for migration from one college to another shall be entertained by the principal of the college from which the migration is sought

P.C Jain, principal of Sri Ram College of Commerce said, “For a student to migrate from one college to another, he/she will need to have a written permit that the principals of both the colleges agree on the matter.” Anjali Johri a second year student of B. Tech in Computer Science in Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College states, “They are not allowing migration in our college. It is an opportunity for students to go some other college of his/her choice which we are not able to get.”

With approximately two weeks remaining for the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), there are still protestors on the streets against this UPSC conducted exam. While earlier the grievances were on the format of the question paper which included sections that tested English proficiency and mathematical skills, now the fight continues for the scrapping of the exam itself. Civil service aspirants are behaving the most uncivilized way by conducting rallies, burning cars and blocking roads.

If we get into the debate, the matters of this protest somewhere stand correct as those who have studied in the Hindi Medium schools and colleges have no basic understanding of the English language. Similarly, along with these, the students of Humanities background face the similar issue with Mathematics in picture.

The problems mostly arise in the students from rural areas of the less educated states, the plight of whom is justified. There are a few or in fact no academic avenues in such areas. Who is to blame here? The government whose policies couldn’t provide the best education or the protestors who are not ready to adhere to the policies already made.

The new government had formed a three member committee led by Arvind Varma to look into the matter. Varma Committee report that was submitted on 31st July stated that the Civil Service Aptitude Test is a scientifically formed exam and shouldn’t be tinkered with. The government however to stabilize the matter announced that the marks of English won’t be considered for the merit list and those who had appeared for the examination in 2011 will get another chance in 2015.

But the streets are still crying out for help. Is Mathematics the issue in hand? But the fact is that the number of questions dealing with this ‘hard’ subject fell down to just three in 2012 compared to 23 in 2011. Is that too much to test? But no matter what happens, CSAT according to the agitators is and will continue to ruin their lives.

Well. I don’t see the aspirants of other government recruitment exams taking to the streets? Basic English and Math is tested in those as well (CSAT aspirants have a different level of demands, then). I have never seen people from other regional languages complaining for CSAT (the protestors’ state that the fight is just not for the Hindi language but the other regional languages too).

The fight is against the engineers too? Why? Those with banners in hands say there are more engineers clearing the civil exams. But dear babies, look at the increased number of engineers? More engineers, more applications and more selections. No? There has been a rising graph for the number of engineering graduates for 6-7 years now. And these engineers never complain? There are no exams that align with their subjects like computer sciences or electronics. Also, the people who are more fluent in English never complain of writing a compulsory Indian Language exam for the mains.

Can we have protests for anything and everything?

With different parties in the frame giving different views, the question is how can this problem be solved? I don’t think scrapping away the exam itself is a solution at that too at this stage. There can be some solutions. Rejecting the CSAT or defending it is not one. The preliminary exam like the mains paper can be translated in the other regional languages and not just Hindi and English, I believe. As some other political leader suggested, English should be removed from the preliminary stage (and not just the merit list criteria) and then the successful candidates should be given the English language and speaking training for 12 months, so as to increase their horizon for the language and solve the ongoing problem.

But then I think English is not a language that can be mastered in a year. The others will still have an edge over the people from the Hindi States. Those who are fighting for English should realize that once you are a civil servant, isn’t English some language, the absence of which will create some fine number of problems in the professional life of a Class-1 officer?

Questions are there.

But answers are lost in the deluge of these questions.

Enactus SSCBS recently made Delhi University proud with its victory at the Enactus Nationals held in Mumbai, this July. The finals saw numerous teams coming in from all over India to compete on whose social endeavors had the maximum impact.

Enactus SSCBS, with its three super successful projects- Project Akshar, Gramodhar and Sanitation Solutions (among others), took home the champion’s trophy and the task to compete with Enactus teams from all over the world at the Internationals- ‘The World Cup’.

With the internationals to be held in October in Beijing, China – the glory of the previous win has been mantled by the bigger task of preparing for the big game. Here is what their President, Vatsal Khullar, had to say about their victory, the team and the fast approaching trip up north.

Was the victory expected? Which other team do you think was closest to yours?

Well, to be honest, the idea wasn’t to win. The idea was to tell everyone the kind of work we’ve been doing and the kinds of impact we are trying to drive. I personally thought IIT Delhi and SRCC have very impactful projects.

How different is preparing for the Internationals from preparing for the Nationals?

It’s the ‘World Cup’! We’ve been juggling crazy hours since the Nationals. So our presentation is much more focused on making it a more holistic presentation of India and our projects. The presentation for the World Cup has to be much broader and varied. It’s more like representing the entire country.

This is the second time SSCBS has won the Nationals. Is there a rule book to victory?

If there was, I wouldn’t tell you! No. But honestly, the kind of commitment a team has to their project resonates. What really worked this time was the kind of dedication and belief our team had on each of the projects. It really went a long way in making the presentation and our team look very strong.

Of all your projects, which project do you think has managed to create the greatest impact and, as they often say, changed lives?

‘Give a man a fish, you fill a stomach. Teach him how to fish and you change a life’. Our project, Sanitation Solutions, has been adopted by the government and is being implemented in 21 districts across the country. So in a way, the ripple effect will be massive. But that being said, project Gramodhar has seen amazing response. We’ve already managed to create over 10 entrepreneurs.

Q: Dear Amma, I’ve been in a relationship for nearly 3 months now. My girlfriend is lovely, intelligent, and I love her sense of humour. But the problem is, I’m just not attracted to her in a, you know… Sexual way. She has often tried to lean in for a kiss but I can’t help but turn my face and pretend to not have noticed. She’s a great person, I don’t want to let go of her but I don’t know if I can ever take it to the next level. What should I do?

A: You are indeed too deep into the backwaters, dear Machhi. Amma has seen many young ones sacrifice a mental connection for a physical one, but you’re swimming right against the Periyar!

People may tell you that physical attraction doesn’t matter, but don’t be misguided! Having a healthy sexual connection is as important for a relationship to flourish in its truest form as a meeting of the minds. Do not get discouraged just because your dosa isn’t crispy yet, sometimes the batter needs to be rested for best results. Talk to your lovely maiden, tell her the truth. This gives you two machhis a wonderful opportunity to try different settings for the most delicious meal! Try role play, maybe that’ll get the chutney grinding. Conversely, try the path of absolute abstinence to heat your pan.

Amma advises you to try hard, but not too hard. Matters like these cannot and should not be forced. If even after several honest attempts you can’t bring yourself to make harmonious music together, let the little machhi go. Spare both yourselves the heartbreak that Amma has so often heard of, but never borne!

Today I realized something; although psychology firmly states that we could never be the same person that we were once at the age of seven, I and perhaps millions of others people in India, realized this isn’t the case.

A slightly tilted face, the red turban, fluffy mustache and know-it-all eyes.

A current ran down through my spine as I saw, recognized and then exclaimed a big ‘Achaaa…’ while I stared blankly at my Facebook newsfeed. A pang of memories from the pre-internet time clouded my mind. I was mourning. Somebody had made me a seven year old again. And that somebody was essentially the life of my childhood days.

Pran? Who was he? How could he just transport us in the world full of adventures of Sabu  and Chacha Chaudhary? And why did we call the smartest of our friends ‘Chacha Chaudhary’, as the comic described “Jinka dimag computer se bhi tez chalta hai!”? The combination of epic strength and sharpness of a mind used to chase away those adorably fat but thick mustached thieves. Then there was the angry and nagging wife Bini who would even scare the giant from the Jupiter away! And who can forget Raaka, Chacha Chaudhary and Sabu’s enemy, whom they would throw away in space like the usual departure of The Team Rocket in the classic Pokemon series.  I remember how Sabu was everybody’s favorite. How I would imagine tossing large objects around as if I were the Sabu from the Jupiter!

The answer is, no matter what comics or books that you read now, Pran’s comics had left such a magical and traceable impact on our minds, that it is difficult to find that very same magic that we witnessed back then. No plot factors sums up its greatness. Neither do I need to explain why it was and still is the best!

The Sherlock Holmes of his times as he deduced the thieves by the trails they left, Chacha Chaudhary was but a common man starring in the regular editions of Diamond and Raj and then later onwards, brought to life by Raghubir Yadav on television too.

Pran being the hard working man he was continued to work on his last edition even as he was fighting his battle with cancer for the past year. And when somebody would ask him, what he wanted from his life, he would grin and say, “If I could put a smile on the face of people, I would consider my life successful.”

Then rest assured Sir, for I smile as I browse through the comments section, almost each one of them thanking you for the smile you put on their faces.
