With Fresher’s season in full swing, and coveted titles of ‘Best Dressed’ up for grabs, a few tips wouldn’t hurt right? For starters, it is important to note that it’s a college fresher’s party and not a wedding. Overdressing will kill the mood. On the contrary, long before you know it, you’ll be a senior scourging for throwback fresher’s party pictures, so you might as well put in a little effort. Also, try not to spend too much money on your outfit, because with college life come a host of events you’ll want to dress up for. Invest in a wearable outfit rather than something you’ll wear only once. Wearing an old outfit wouldn’t hurt and the DIY route is always commendable. If you’re still confused and sticking to the theme is a little trickier than what you’d envisioned, here are a few looks to draw inspiration from:

The ‘Friends’ Look.
With slip dresses making a comeback in runways and blog posts the world over, they surely make a statement while also appearing breezy and comfortable. To take it up a notch, layering one over a plain t-shirt like Phoebe and Rachel do on ‘Friends’ is a good idea.

Karishma’s look in Zubeida.
The ‘Bollywood’ theme is a recurring one each year, and for those daring to make a statement in a sari, Karishma Kapoor’s innumerable ethnic looks in the movie Zubeida can be an inspiration. Opt for a light sari with a matching blouse in a pastel hue, and take it light on the accessories. Don a youthful look this time around, as you always have your farewell to look more ‘mature’!

Woodstock, Coachella and Glastonbury vibes.

Look at music festival outfits for a fun and vibrant look. Off-shoulder dresses, with over the top jewellery and gladiator sandals never fail to make a statement.

Accessorise the right way.
Most outfits scream for accessories, and a good option this time would be trendy headgear. Say, a turban or a chunky headpiece! YouTube has millions of tutorials on wearing turbans and bandanas. Check them out if taking the headgear route is your thing.

These tips are only for inspiration, so as to come up with something of your own. You wouldn’t want to let go of your comfort zone, trying to ape someone else!

Every year, societies from colleges across the campus compete neck to neck and put up spectacular performances during the fest season. This year too, saw certain teams shine a little brighter than the rest. We bring you a series with college societies that put their heart and soul into their respective fields and took home the top prizes at various cultural fests.

The best college society in each category was selected by creating a tally of the top 3 positions at competitive events held during various cultural fests of this season. Whenever a society won the first prize, they were awarded 3 points, for the second position they received 2 points and for the third position, 1 point was added to their tally.

For the fashion category, I Vogue, the Fashion Society of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce scored the maximum points with their tally being at 6 points. Maitreyi College, Amity University and Hans Raj College followed next with 3 points each and the fashion societies of VNMC, Ramjas College and Dyal Singh College shared the third position with 2 points each.

The Winning Society at a Glance

I VOGUE, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce

Stuck between a modern and a conservative set of minds, we still find a large part of our society to be completely against the idea of people having different sexual preferences, thus compelling many of them to lead a captive life with a constant fear to come out as ‘themselves’. At I Vogue, the team aims to move everyone towards the path of modernity and create such a change where the LGBT community respectfully gets to stand at par in the society and its members to be considered as ‘Humans’ like others. Their act, being a unique fusion of both conservative and modern thinking, therefore brings about Duality as the basic theme emphasizing on the acceptance of the LGBT community, and its costumes are designed according to the modern and ancient era with base colors kept as authentic as black and white along with stunning shades of gold and silver.

Ashwani Verma, President of I Vogue says, “The members of I Vogue start working on everything, three months before the beginning of the fest season with full dedication and perseverance, leaving no stones unturned. Being in a team, we have all learnt to be extremely tolerant of different views and now, not only encourage but even accept each other’s opinions like our very own. I strongly believe that we are mostly led by one, most important mantra, which is to simply ignore ‘I’ in a team and focus on ‘WE’ in every performance; and this, I can proudly say, has been the key to all the victories we have achieved this season.”

Performing Members Ashwani Verma (President), Vasu Goel (Vice President), Sarthak Kathuria, Harsh Kapoor, Divank Satwani, Mohil Jain, Sahib Singh, Ushmeet Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Rivleen Kaur, Harjot Kaur, Reva Goswami, Ashween Kaur, Tavisha Dua and Riya Jain.
Head Designer and Stylist:- Sarthak Kathuria
Make-up Artist:- Kanku Vyas
Head Choreographer:- Ashwani Verma
Backstage Help:- Gurleen Kaur, Srishti Bhatia

Winners Tally: I Vogue

Five fests were included in our analysis for this series: Tarang, LSR; Ullas, KNC; Confluence, Hans Raj College; Mecca, Hindu College and Crossroads, SRCC. Here is the list of winning performances by I Vogue:

A few days ago, The Auburn Umbrella dished out a couple of fashion trends for you all to follow as you participate in DU’s much-talked about ‘Fest Season’. As we visited various campuses to collect fest coverage, we were thrilled with the kind of fashion statements that were made by our stylish student body.

Although the weather over this season has been uncertain, flip-flopping from warm to hot to suddenly nippy, it appears that our trendy DU chicas have already declared summers! We got to see a lot of summery, short dresses, denim shorts and sleeveless shirts. Crop tops from last season are also back! Strappy sandals and leather back-packs on the accessories side were trending items too.

The dapper men chose to dress casually in long shorts, chappals and sporty tees. Western clothing was more frequently seen, with kurtas, Nehru jackets and khadi shirts from last season missing in the scene.

It’s very important to own a balanced wardrobe, i.e a good blend of branded, as well as street fashion and our students certainly know how to strike that equation right! So we saw girls sporting branded jeans with chunky jewellery bought off the street; or street sandals worn with branded skater dresses. In the brand category, the evergreen labels Zara, Promod, Forever 21 and the latest high-street fashion brand to enter Indian markets- H&M were popular choices; whereas flea markets like Janpath and Sarojini Nagar are still the places to shop at when one is on a tight budget.

As far as fashion disasters are concerned, thankfully, there were few that met the eye. People who are still holding on to their woollens and other items from winter were looked upon with contempt. Also, too much bling, too little clothing, excessively high heels and overdone make-up were unanimously regarded as fashion faux pas.

We have our avid DU fashion blogger, Sejal Kumar, corroborating our findings in her latest video. Watch her flit around the SRCC campus as she investigates what DU is wearing this fest season!

In the pulsating city of Delhi, the DU students make for the energetic young bloods who know what they want to achieve and how to raise a voice for it. However, they also believe that to add to the boldness of their personalities, a raw Indian look is a must. And, that is how began the ‘Great Indian Trend’ tales!

Not only that, the girls here are obsessed with the wackiness, the colours and the varieties that originate from the roots of India. If you wish to taste a tad bit of this trend, Wooplr has penned down a list of 10 things that every Desi Diva should possess in her closet. Here, take a look :

1. Quirky Kurtas

If there could be a better replacement for casual tees, it is kurtas. Free, fun and expressive; what more could we ask for? The best part about purchasing these kurtas is that each looks different and has a different mood to it. They are colourful and can be styled for various occasions.

2. Jazzy Jutties

Looking to spruce up a dull outfit? Go on, add a pair of spunk to your OOTD by including fun jutties. Mirrored, embroidered or embellished; you will be spoilt for choices. Whether an Indian or a western outfit, it will undoubtedly break your shoe monotony.

3. Bewitching Bindis

We grew up seeing our mom put on a beautiful bindi on her forehead, which would instantly light up her face. A mother’s style mantra never fails to entice the world and we’re inspired too. Borrow some inspiration and try on a bindi to complement your kurti or suit outfit. We’re sure you will dazzle with this one!

4. Joyful Jhumkas

Whether in DU or not, a jhumka is a must-have accessory for every Delhi girl. A beautiful jhumka can instantly brighten up any outfit and add immediate charm to one’s face. A desi diva always knows how to let her jhumkis do all the talking!

5. Kajal Kamikaze

The eyes are a mirror to your soul and it’s only right to enhance it. Every DU girl is a kohl addict, whether it is worn as a liner over the eye or under it. No makeup bag is complete without this beauty basic. It compliments both Indian and western wear so well. So, when you put on your patialias or short kurtas, don’t forget to line those beautiful eyes with kohl. One stroke of it and you know you’ll be an instant head turner.

6.Bangle Blaze

When you decide upon an outfit, make sure that you think it through with all the accessories too.

If being a desi girl is your style of the day, then add on some bangles to match it up with your salwaar or contrast it too. A kada, chunky bangles or lots of glass bangles- we love it all! In fact, even when you wear an all-black outfit, bangles can be the standout factor. Bangles are worth to be flaunted, so don’t forget to pick the best!

7. Patiala Patola

Borrowed from the Punjabi culture and most widely adopted by the girls of DU, Patialas are definitely for the Patola kudis! Patiala salwars are the best saviours when you don’t feel like dressing up and want to be comfortable. If you think these salwars work best with short kurtas, let us introduce you to the trend of baggy tees that can compliment them perfectly. Think Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met.

8. Dupatta Indulge

This one is dedicated to all you Bollywood lovers. You can add a dash of your own drama and vibe to this one by including it in your outfit. Colourful, printed and with cute little latkans; there are too many options to choose from. As a dupatta, stole or even scarf, you can style it up the way you want. Its super easy, we promise. The star of the season has been the phulkari dupatta, so go, get them!

9. Joyful Jholas

Arm candies do make for great eye-candies! Spreading their wonders worldwide for several years now, jhola bags with embroidered and Indian artwork are certainly a catch that you shouldn’t miss out on. Make these bags your style statement and we assure you that no other accessory would be needed to make you look exquisite!

10. Pretty Printed Wrap-Arounds

It’s every DU girls’ personal favourite! If there is any Indian print you have not yet explored, you should be on a wrap-around skirt hunt. You will easily find such skirts with beautiful traditional block prints like paisley, elephant prints and tribal ones in rustic colours to make it look more desi.

Living in Delhi, everyone is habituated to at least two things- the scorching summers and almost frosty winters! Bidding goodbye to the summers and welcoming the cover-me-up winters is definitely the most awaited time of the year for every girl. Why? Well, it’s just another time of the year to play dress up. And DU girls sure know how to play dress up and make a statement. There sure is something about the winter wardrobe. But apart from this, there are 5 things, every DU girl has an obsession for during the winter season. Here’s what they are:

1. Lusting For Leather!

Irrespective of the seasons, the DU-ites have an irresistible lust for leather. Whether in the form of accessories or attires, you will find students in awe of rugged leather. If you have friends in DU, your ears might be tired of hearing, ‘yaar, iss bar sardiyo me leather jacket lena hai!’. Yes, their winter bucket list always has a leather jacket. And, why not! It’s the most warm material for the weather here. You can be warm and still manage to be the diva of your college! We suggest that you go in for a tan brown or a ruby instead of the usual blacks and browns?

2. Let Your Boots Be The Hero!

Believe it or not, boots give a stiff competition to a girl’s favourite pair of heels. Some DU girls don’t even wait for the winds to be as chilly to get their seasonal heroes out. The loyalty that even their boyfriends won’t get. Mind you! They are not the kind who would opt to play it safe in black boots. In fact, they love showing off their unique boots with the most daring details.

3. Because They Love To Hug Their Wools!

And finally, the woolens won’t suffocate anymore. It’s about time we bring them out and give them a good rub. While sweaters and mufflers are common among the girls, the centre of attraction is always that one favorite woolen beanie you put on! Don’t forget to check out the latest trends in woolen wear before you go on your next winter shopping spree!

4. Lazy As They Are, The Baggy Hoodies Are Here To Stay!

Our rigid perceptions about guys being the laziest creatures on this planet were boggled by a handful of DU girls when they told us one reason they love winters is because they wouldn’t have work on their looks too much and still look stylish! The front shelf of their closet will always be occupied with the most baggy hoodies that they can pull of amazingly with denims and give a kick start to their day at college. You know what? Make hoodies your best friend for letting you enjoy some extra sleep time in the morning!

5. Secret crush? It’s the Winter Blush!

Are you also one of those who waits for December just to get this glowy skin tone with just the perfect pink blush on your cheeks? Well, if you are, the wait is about to get over. Keep your blush ons back in your kits and get ready for the natural one! You can always play a lot with your eyes in this make up friendly weather, but, all thanks to it, you are definitely not going to waste too much time on doing your face. And, just for the record, if you do have some secret crush for real, isn’t ‘Winter blush’ the perfect con?

QUES:  Dear Auburn,

I am in an all-girls college. This is the first time I’m studying in such an environment and seeing all the girls dressed so well makes me want to do something unique for myself. How can I stand out in the crowd?
-NOT just another brick in the wall

ANS: Hey Sweetheart,

I can understand what you’re going through and I’m very proud of the fact that you want to carve a niche of your own. However, your approach needs a little tweaking. Instead of trying to stand out, why not try to dress in a way that helps you turn out well? That way, you’ll be less vulnerable to a fashion fiasco or wrong attention.

Having said that, I’d advise you to never blindly follow any trends. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable, natural and happy. If your clothes fare well in these criteria, you’ll definitely make an impact with your presence. Confidence is key, honey.

Also, avoid shopping at the popular brands like Mango and Forever 21. Everyone gets their clothes from there now-a-days and you’re better off not looking like the next person if you stay away from these stores. Instead, try to shop at lesser known yet decent places (like perhaps Paharganj) where you can pick up unique and exquisite clothes and accessories.

xoxo

QUES:  Dear Auburn,
I need to stock up my wardrobe for the winter months. What kind of clothes should I be buying and from where?
-Miss.Prude

ANS: Dear Miss Prude,

Though I admire you for your prudence, I’d say it’s a little too early to be undertaking this Herculean task. Because

a) most markets are currently experiencing what I call ‘transit stock’. In the sense that the clothes you’ll see now are for the interim seasonal period. They’re not light enough for summer and not potent enough for winter; and

b) you’ll get better bargains if you wait for another two weeks.

When the time is right ( two or so weeks hence), you must purchase a couple of nice, light jackets for the month of November and February; thick, woolly sweaters for December and January; mufflers, gloves, ear muffs, caps and berets; boots and shoes like sneaker wedges, converse and comfy walkers and of course, do not forget to buy a nice pair of sunglasses- the winter sun is strong and you don’t want to ever underestimate it’s glare.

To buy these necessities, you must visit Sarojini Nagar Market, Majnu Ka Tilla, Kamla Nagar Market, Janpath and GK M Block Market. For branded wear, try Mango, Zara, Promod, Forever 21 and the newly opened H&M.

Remember, whatever you buy must fulfill at least the basic purpose of keeping you warm. The rest is all a bonus!

xoxo
-Auburn

Dear Auburn,
When I go out with my boyfriend on dates and such, I always end up wearing jeans or leggings. I tend to feel uncomfortable in skirts and shorts. Yet, I wish I could upgrade my oomph quotient without looking provocative. Please help!
-Plain Jane
Answer: Dear Plain Jane,
Don’t feel disheartened. Trust me, there are a plethora of options that you can explore! Firstly, you could upgrade your jeans by taking onto ripped denims. Or pair your jeans with crop tops and tank tops. The same goes for leggings.

Secondly, try out those long, fluid and flowing maxi dresses. They’re really chic and come in wonderful patterns and styles. They’ll fulfil your wish of being covered, while at the same time, they’ll make you look really pretty and girly.

Other than that, you could also think of adding things on and enhancing your present look with accessories and make up. Eg: Mascara, smokey eyes, red lips (as perfected by Taylor Swift) and diva like eye liner will give you a dramatic and impactful look; or a little junk jewellery will turn your lacklustre outfit into something nice and hip(pie)!

The key is to have fun and experiment. And most importantly, do so confidently.

Much love!
xoxo

In search for new fashionistas, the DU beat fashion police patrolled the beautiful lanes of Lodhi Road and found some young people in Dyal Singh College (Morning) experimenting with their looks. So without further adieu, here are the ones who the DU Beat police caught up to chat about their distinct style:

Rupinder Singh
I am wearing formal clothes for my placement interview today. My shirt is from Tommy Hilfiger, trousers from UCB, shoes from Zara and watch from Bursberry. I like tattoos and have one myself. My tattoo is a Maori Art and its each element defines my personality and dreams. For me fashion is about wearing stuff which makes you feel comfortable and confident. – Rupinder Singh, B.A. English (Hons.), 3rd year.
I bought my kurta from Snapdeal and my footwear is from Sarojini Nagar. I love wearing ethnic clothes. I feel that they are the most comfortable and personify ‘beauty in simplicity’. In my opinion style is nothing but an extension of one’s personality. - Bhavya Bisht, Maths Honors, 3rd year.

My Avengers t-shirt is from Myntra, trousers from Cantabil and shoes from Woodland. I’m a superhero fanatic and it reflects in my style. Batman for me is the most stylish superhero ever. And Christian Bale as Batman was just perfect; portraying the reckless, charming, billionaire playboy with impeccable style in day and Gotham’s dark guardian at night. - Abhinav Sharma, B.Com (Hons.), 2nd year.

My top is from Janpath and jeans from Flying Machine. My shoes are from Sketchers. I always tend to wear light, natural and breathable fabric clothes to beat this scorching summer heat. According to me the worst fashion trend is to wear layers of make-up in this hot weather. The make-up clogs the skin pores, resulting in skin problems. A generous application of sunscreen and sunglasses and I am good to go for the day. - Raavi Joshi, B.A. English (Hons.), 2nd year.

Even side braids, french braids, buns, look amazing. I think that wearing leggings with dresses should be banned as they ruin the perfectly lovely dresses. - Sanya Arora, B.Com (Program), 2nd year.
