First impressions are indeed instant and play a major role in dictating the final outcome. Here are few styles that might solve the problems of deciding the perfect interview outfit for students.

  • Following the conventional and boring trend during dressing up for interviews is perhaps the safest one. It helps in reiterating your seriousness for the job role offered. Avoiding experiments and playing the safe game can never go wrong! The traditional business suits, consisting of solid or subtle patterned collared shirts of light colors paired with dark shaded formal pants gives a typical formal look. I’m quite impressed with your grit and patience. That your feelings for this lucky girl remained consistent for so long is laudable. Kudos to you, young man!

Now, coming to your query, let me start off by telling you that you’re in a slightly tricky spot. You need to dress to impress, yes. But you’re going for a movie, and therefore, you don’t want to look out of place in the casual ambiance of a cinema hall.

You have two options: a) Semi- Formal: A neatly ironed shirt with chinos, and

b) Casual: A hosiery T-shirt (polo or with a witty slogan/cartoon /fun print) and denims.

Choose one from the two, keeping in mind your personality, your date’s preferences and of course, your plans post the movie.

What you need to most definitely avoid are the following: pyjamas/ track pants; chappals; coloured, tight boy-band pants. If bold is your style, try going for a khadi kurta. You’ll look daper! But wear this only if you think you can carry it off.

The weather in Delhi has become extremely oppressive! It’s way too hot and the scorching sun is merciless! Given the heat that our city is boiling in, could you suggest comfortable yet fashionable clothing options for college?

Dear Heat- averse,

Your query is absolutely legit. I, too, feel really uncomfortable these days. Thank goodness I have my Umbrella for protection!

Given the heat wave that Delhi is caught in, try wearing loose and comfortable cotton clothes. Summer dresses in floral prints, long and short skirts (depending on your personal level of comfort), and shorts are your best bet. If you like wearing Indian attire, go for short kurtis or kurtas that are minimalistic and don’t weigh you down. Palazzo pants, harem pants and dhoti-pyjamas are fluid and comfortable too.

Avoid denims. They’re really heavy, clingy and non-sweat absorbent. They’ll make you feel claustrophobic and trapped. Also, go easy on the accessories. Don’t wear very heavy earrings, necklaces or bangles.

The key is to dress like you’d want to feel: cool, comfortable and free. So make a wise choice from the above options, and you’ll breeze through the next two months!

I am a second year student studying in DU. Over the course of the year, I have put on a lot of weight on my waist. I am thin all over, but I have a bulging belly. My friends have started noticing the pot belly and making fun of it. How should I dress to conceal the issue?

Dear Fatty,
Firstly, don’t sound so desolate. Your problem is not impossible to solve. There are two ways of addressing your issue: a) The short-term solution and b) The long term solution.

Fashion can help you in the short run. Wear loose kurtas, palazzo pants and maxi dresses. At the same time, avoid tank tops, high-waisted jeans and crop tops. If you’re very conscious about the bulge, then try a tummy tucker as well. The key is to take away attention from your waist, not bring attention to it. So you must also steer clear from dresses that bunch up at your waist. They’ll only make you look heavier.

Exercise and nutrition are the only things that can permanently solve your problem. If you’re thin all over and your midriff is the only issue, then clearly, you’re not eating right.  Combining good eating habits with regular exercise will help you shape up for sure!

The Death of Fashion: Welcome to the Life of a Second Year Student

They say that starting something new is easy; sustaining it is where the real challenge resides. These words are golden. I have seen their manifestation in my very own life. And how!

When I joined college a year ago, various aspects of DU life excited me. But one bug that bit me the hardest was the fashion bug. I remember spending the entire month before joining college, trying to put together a look for myself. I would endlessly sit before the computer screen, surfing fashion articles, Google Images and YouTube videos in my hollow pursuit. Finally, when I did settle on something I liked, I remember dragging my mother to the nearest mall and coming home almost penniless!

It was only after I felt that I was fully equipped with a trendsetting wardrobe, did I put an end to my shopping sprees. With bags full of clothes and accessories, I moved into my tiny hostel room. Lack of space was no deterrent. I was determined to be the Sarah Jessica Parker of my college.

Finally, when college began, I started to bring out my outfits one by one. Every night, I’d invest time and effort in trying out different combinations and seeking others’ approval. However, the tedium was both rewarding and unforgiving. Though I’d have a mind-blowing look for the next day, I’d also have a huge pile of clothes on my bed, demanding my attention. The mess used to take so long to tidy, that often, I’d just sleep on the pile!

These amusing tales, however, belong to the pages of my “Fuccha Diary”. Ever since I’ve moved into my second year, my attitude has taken a 360 degree turn. Not only has my dressing sense become sloppy, but my interest in college fashion has also completely paled. Now, looking even remotely presentable seems like the least of my concerns.

I think the cause for this change can be attributed to my second year. When you come back to college as a senior, the excitement that stems from the novelty of DU dies. Also, you have other, more critical things to worry about (e.g.: getting out of bed and actually making it to college!). Fashion takes a back seat and focus shifts to academics, internships, extracurricular activities and coaching for entrances.

In the light of our realistic constraints, it can be said that we, the sophomores of DU, are handing over a massive responsibility to the freshers. We are passing on the baton. It is now up to them to carry forth the legacy and make the streets of DU look fashionable. Let the freshers strut around in their fancy attire. We, on the other hand, are content in walking those same streets in our pyjamas and chappals!

Top Societies at Delhi University Fests: Lady Irwin for Fashion

Every year, societies from colleges across the campus compete neck to neck and put up spectacular performances during the fest season. This year too, saw certain teams shine a little brighter than the rest. We bring you a series with college societies that put their heart and soul into their respective fields and took home the top prizes at various cultural fests. The best college society in each category was selected by creating a tally of the top 3 positions at competitive events held during 13 cultural fests of this season. Whenever a society won the first prize they were award 3 points, for the second position they received 2 points and for the third position, 1 point was added to their tally. With 12 points in its kitty, Lady Irwin College’s Prophecy emerged as the winner in the Fashion category. Kamala Nehru College’s Glitz with 6 points follows next.

Lady Irwin College, with its theme “Contemporary Cleopatra’s Eviction” won the first position at fashion competitions at multiple fests such as Mecca, Ullas and Crossroads this year. Their piece was based on Cleopatra and her life. “Hard work, will power, dedication and team work, of course, is our secret. We want to be the best fashion society in DU and we are always aiming to achieve it”, said Tarini Singh the President of the college’s Fashion Soc. Names of the performing members: Tarini Singh. Models : Somya, Vartika, Ankana, Samiksha, Aishwarya, Smriti, Purnima, Ayushi, Kriti and Shalini. Back stage : Kaveri, Manvi, Jasmine. Note: The thirteen fests included in our analysis for this series include SRCC’s Crossroads, Gargi College’s Reverie, Sri Venkateswara College’s Nexus, LSR’s Tarang, Hans Raj’s Confluence, I.P. College for Women’s Shruti, Daulat Ram College’s Manjari, Hindu College’s Mecca, Jesus and Mary College’s Montage, Miranda House’s Tempest, Kamala Nehru College’s Ullas, Kirori Mal College’s Renaissance, SGTB Khalsa’s Lashkara. Out of the fests listed, only 5 had conducted a Fashion Show Competition.]]>

KNC and Lady Irwin emerge victorious at SRCC’s fashion show

On the third day of Crossroads 2014, Demeanor, the Fashion Society of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) organized the Fashion Show Competition. The event commenced with the performance of Sri Aurobindo College at 4 p.m. on the main stage. The competition was judged by Ms. Konica Kant, who has been the Winner of Timeless Beauty and was the Miss Femina 2014 Delhi finalist. Each team was given 10-12 minutes for its performance. A total of eight teams participated in the event, the performance of Demeanor being the non-competitive one. After the performance of Demeanor, FBB models showed up their Spring-summer collection, followed by the models from Red Chief.

Ms. Konica, the judge for the event said “The competition was well organised. Overall, I can use three words for the event – it was good, tough and interesting. I personally liked SRCC’s performance a lot.”

The prize for the best model in male category went to Rohit Pachauri from Amity University and that of female category was bagged by Kriti Kathreen from SRCC. The first position was shared by Kamala Nehru College and Lady Irwin College, while the second position was bagged by Amity University. The winning team got Rs. 25,000 and shoes sponsored by Red Chief, one of the key sponsors of the event.

Lady Irwin wins first prize, Maitreyi bags best wardrobe at KNC’s Fashion Show competition

Glitz, the Fashion Society of Kamala Nehru College organised its Fashion Show Competition on 19th February – the first day of Ullas 2014.

A total of eight teams (seven competitive and one non-competitive team) took part in the competition. The judges for the event were; Ritu Singh, an eminent personality in fashion world, Suhail Kohli, who has worked with Swapnil Shinde and Kakoli C. Mehra, who started as a Custom Designer for Mr. Steven Segal, crowned as Miss Kanchenjunga i.e. Miss North Bengal in 1993.

The event commenced with the performance of Style Brokers, the Fashion Society of Deshbandhu College, followed by the performance of iVogue- the Fashion Society of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce. Each college was given a time limit of 10-12 minutes. Members from the organizing society say “Fashion is not something that exists in the dresses. It is in the sky. Fashion never dies.”

The award for the Best Wardrobe was given to Maitreyi College. The best model in the female and male category, were Shivani and Mayank from CVS respectively. The first prize was bagged by Prophecy- Fashion Society of Lady Irwin College and the second prize went to Maitreyi College.

Top 5 trends that freshers end up following

College is seen as a land of magical dreams and abundant freedom. After slogging for their Board Exams, freshers look forward to letting their hair down and experimenting with everything under the sun. While every fresher takes a different route, we look at some common trends among freshers in the first few months after college begins!

  1. Getting their hair coloured-Ah, come college and you’ll notice many hardcore freshers dyeing their hair in a variety of colours. Red and light brown are too old school now and people have moved on to more off beat shades like purple, blue, green and even white. In case you dislike everything that is main stream and want to stand out, just shave your hair off completely; that should do the trick!
  2. Joining societies and ‘youth organisations’– It is common knowledge that the batch of first years is easily the most enthusiastic lot in a college at any given point of time. Fresh out of school, they want to try their hand at anything and everything, and usually end up joining about 5 different societies in colleges, or the many ‘youth organisations’ comprising DU students. Needless to say, they don’t think too much about it and jump into such activities. This zeal fades, eventually, and students end up in the one or two societies that they really like.
  3. Getting tattoos and piercings-Nothing screams freedom and individuality like tattoos and piercings, right? There are many fucchas who line up outside tattoo studios and jewellery stores to get inked and pierced respectively the minute they get into DU. They get their ears, noses, eyebrows and even unmentionable body parts pierced. Cryptic tattoos are definitely in, though most like to keep it simple with the symbol for infinity being a popular option.
  4. Adopting a hippie outlook- This transformation is relatively slow and not something that everyone goes through. But slowly and surely, you’ll notice some freshers adopting certain habits. Such students claim to hate all that is main stream and switch to loose, brightly coloured pants and tops and can be seen smoking around campus. And no, that’s not a cigarette they’re smoking! They’ll start growing out their hair and adopting an ‘I don’t care about anything’ attitude. Many of them even start listening to Pink Floyd to seal the deal.
  5. Creating LinkedIn Accounts-This isn’t an immediate occurrence, but within a month or so, students start creating LinkedIn accounts for ‘professional purposes’. Especially those in Commerce, Economics and Business courses feel that a profile on LinkedIn will help them get important contacts. Only problem is that the next time they log into their account is about a year later, if at all.
