The tournament that started with 32 teams and 736 players who dreamed of lifting world football’s most glamorous trophy has now almost reached the grand stage. In the first semi-final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup between the host Brazil and Germany held at Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte, the Die Mannschaft crushed their 5 time World Champion opponent 1 goal to 7. The young German side guided by Joachim Löw reached the World Cup final for the record 8th time after 90 of the most incredible minutes in World Cup history, putting seven goals past the Brazil, who suffered their worst ever defeat, breaking the record set in 1920 for Brazil’s heaviest ever defeat, previously 6-0 against Uruguay.

Bernard, Dante and Luiz Gustavo came into the Brazilian side for the injured Neymar Jr., the suspended Thiago Silva and the dropped Paulinho, while Germany were unchanged from their quarter-final win over France. The Brazilian side paid tribute to their injured hero Neymar before kickoff, with David Luiz holding a jersey bearing his name during the anthems. But it was Thiago Silva who they appeared to miss the most in the opening 10 minutes and a defensive shambles from a German corner left Thomas Muller in acres of space to side foot the ball home past Cesar to put the Germans ahead. This was but only the beginning to the carnage that followed, Miroslav Klose, Toni Kroos (2 goals), Sami Khedira and 58′ substitute Andre Schurrle (2 goals) did the job for the Germans as they devastated Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Brazil. Miroslav Klose broke Ronaldo’s long-standing World Cup goals record when he poked in a rebound to notch his 16th finals goal. The hosts were down by 5 goals at the 29′ mark itself.

The match was over for the men in yellow in the first half itself. Luiz Felipe Scolari made a pair of changes at half time. Paulinho and Ramires replaced Fernandinho and the ineffective Hulk, and Brazil started the second half with a little extra spark. For the next 10 minutes or so the hosts persevered and kept the German goal under constant attack, though only to be denied by Manuel Neuer, who kept on making brilliant saves and increase the frustration amongst the Brazilian players and majority of the audience (58,141) present in the stadium. Match referee Marco Rodriguez kept his cards away for most of the time and only one Yellow card was shown to Brazilian and Bayern Munich defender Dante.

A consolation came in the 90th minute through Oscar, but it was bit too late.

The ultimate humiliation for the Brazilian players came late on in the game, as their fans begin to join the German fans’ “Ole”s whenever Germany touched the ball. For most of the time after going down by 5 goals the Brazilian fans “booed” their own side in frustration. The expectations were of diminishing the memories of the 1950 FIFA World Cup Finals where they lost to their bitter rivals Argentina at home and claiming their 6th title here, but this now only remains a futile cause.

Germany will now join the winners of the Second Semi-final, to be played between Netherlands and Argentina tonight at Arena Corinthians, São Paulo. It should be noted that no European side has ever lifted the World Cup trophy here in South America, but this very well may be their golden chance in Rio de Janeiro.

The much dreaded moment is finally here. It’s the third year. Since the beginning of my college life I have always been afraid of the third year. It is the last year, just like Class 12th was the last grade. I’ll speak for myself and won’t generalize, that I’m always afraid of thresholds, the point of the horizon beyond which your sight can’t travel.

Like a medieval age person, I have begun to think that where the sea ends, is a deep waterfall that engulfs you and you fall if you sail further. But I’d like to be the renaissance woman and believe that the horizon is but another milestone in a never ending journey we like to romantically call ‘life’.

So, a quick overview of the things this article will not tell you to do –

  •    How to prepare for GRE/TOEFL/IELTS/GMAT/SAT.
  • Publish a research paper.
  •  How to obtain good letters of recommendation.
  • How to write a good statement of purpose.
  • How to be more “focused” towards academics and placements.

I’m not saying that the above mentioned things are not important for a student, but they are not important in the context of my writing, simply put. People, newspapers, V channels and counselors will tell you to buck up, be more focused towards your future and start planning. No harm. Nothing wrong. Wait, did I say nothing wrong?

I recently watched a TED talk (the midnight before I was supposed to submit the article) and had I not seen that talk, the article would have pretty much been about the list mentioned above. It was by this person Carl (I’m aversive to caste, I can’t remember last names. Strangely enough, even of foreigners) who’d written a book about the need to detach from the blind rush of life and slow down. Be slow, be a good slow. Savor life.

We’re always conditioned to create a timeline for our lives. Graduate by 21, job by 23, settled by 25, married by 28, kids by 30. Even if there is no direct pressure, most of us pretty much go that way, for the sheer convenience and logic we see in how our life has been laid out in front of us. We’re so consumed by the idea of finishing things “in time” that we have unconsciously created a timeline for ourselves already, to ‘finish off’ and ‘settle down‘ in ‘good time’.

Time then becomes a finite resource which is depleting by the second and we need to tap it. Not knowing that time also replenishes itself, time also stops in the breathlessness of a sunset, in the vastness of the sky, in the swinging of a boat in water and in the rediscovering of a life not bound by time, yet beautifully strung around it.

Therefore a personal suggestion from this writer would be, to fall in love. No, not like Kajol and SRK did in DDLJ after finishing college (although if you want, go ahead by all means. I’m not judging), but with yourself, with your subject, with your environment.

Read more books, travel a little, write a little into catharsis, take a deep breath, and relax. There is no hurry.

Exist in a timeless space that allows you to discover your subject in an entirely new light, and you’ll suddenly find yourself automatically studying without your mother’s slippers on your head. You’ll automatically find yourself writing better assignments, being more productive, having better attention levels and initiating conversations with teachers outside classrooms, and trust me those are priceless.

But, even if all this doesn’t happen, it’s okay. It will sooner or later. We’re humans, we take time.  But of all the things we could ever learn from life, we learn that time and tide wait for none. So don’t let this one year fly by ordinarily, feel every moment instead, savor the taste of it all. Do new things, meet new people, for as I said, horizon is but another milestone in a never ending journey we like to romantically call life.

Aries: Behold! You are in for a big surprise mid-week. Though over-enthusiastic reactions can turn it into a shock.

Taurus: You are likely to hit the wall. I mean it literally.

Gemini: And you going to be hit on by your crush. Enjoy!

Cancer: You will realise how lucky you are to not be the 2014 batch of  DU when you see the cut off of your course in your college closing at a percentage higher than what it was for you.  As for the new aspirants, long distance travelling is on the cards. Aim for the college farthest from home.

Leo: Rajat Tokas will message you on Facebook. Don’t know who he is?  Go Google him!

Virgo: Next time you travel by bus, you will have an annoying, whiny kid sitting next to you. That is when you will realize you left your earphones at home. Seems like the stars are planning to test your patience.

Libra: If you are on a shopping spree for the new session, you are in for a heart-break. Your most disliked classmate has prettier outfits than you. What can be worse? She has bought an exact same one like yours.

Scorpio: Anything you say this week will be used against you by your mother. Good luck.

Sagittarius: You will lose the pen drive which has all the episodes of your favorite show. It may also contain videos which should not land up with your parents. Be careful as to where you lose it.

Capricorn: Students opting for Economics and Commerce this academic year are likely to suffer from severe mood swings and emotional imbalance. Our condolences are with you!

Aquarius: You have been bestowed with the power to bring rain, It will rain the moment you step out of your house.

Pisces: Your best friend is keeping a secret for you. Take him/her for an ice cream treat and the secret will be revealed.

Are you an animal lover? Do you get overwhelmed with ‘love’ when you see a puppy and ‘sorrow’ when you see a stray dog roaming the streets hungry? Do you get grief stricken when you read about the plight of animals taken to laboratories for experimentation ?

If yes, then mere compassion doesn’t help save these animals. Sharing posts of animal welfare organizations on Facebook does create awareness to an extent but it is not enough to rescue the animals from their misery.

Here is something a true animal lover can do to help animals in distress on a personal level . There are various animal shelters in the city which provide a home to abandoned and stray animals, or animals rescued from slaughter houses and laboratories. They also provide vaccination, sterilization and free medical treatment to such animals in case of injuries. These shelters take in volunteers who are assigned the task of looking after animals for few hours as per their choice.

It is similar to working in an orphanage, blind school or an old age home. The animals that need the most love and care are the abandoned dogs who are clueless as to why there landed up there from the comfort of their houses. They wait endlessly for their owners. For these dogs, their owners are their family whom they love unconditionally.

Here are some of the animal shelters in Delhi where you can help the needy animals –

Aspirants should note that the counselling fee submission will close on 10.07.2014 at 5:00 P.M. and Online Registration & Choice filling will close on 11.07.2014 at 3:00 P.M. Students can take a look at the Cut Off list from last year here to get a better idea about what to expect this year. The B.E information brochure can be accessed here.

NSIT has been a popular option for science stream students over the past years, especially for those from New Delhi. “The USP of NSIT is that students get exposed to a variety of opportunities for both personal and professional growth due to the college’s location in the National Capital. While students get first class academic exposure on one hand, they also take up a lot of independent projects, participate in a variety of national and international competitions and holistically grow as an individual. Perhaps, this sets the college apart from all other engineering colleges in India“, said a final year student from NSIT.
