Amma, it’s vacation time and to kill time, I downloaded a dating app. It was fun, accepting and rejecting people. I didn’t expect a lot out of it, but I met a promising looking “match”, and we’ve been talking for a fortnight. Yesterday he said he wants to meet up. Now though I love talking to him, I’m not sure if I should agree. What do I do?

Ah, these dating sites and app! Amma just can’t get a hang of these! I don’t know what you new machhis are up to. Having said that, Amma has had her share of dating sites, though she prefers going old school. It sure is quite fun!

Coming to business, make sure you learn about him as much as you can. Add him on other social media, like Facebook and Instagram. Google him, too! This will help you be a bit more sure about him.

And most importantly, meet him in a public place, like a mall or a market, during the day. Follow general rules of precaution like keeping an eye on your drink and so on. If that nariyal chutney turns out foul, you can throw it out with the trash quite easily.

I hope you have fun! Give him a chance, and just be careful. 🙂

As the University of Delhi announced the final semester results for the under graduation class of 2011, post the initial cheer, celebration and nostalgia came the apprehensions for post graduation admissions.  The students who’ve graduated from the University of Delhi are looking for admissions in their favorite post graduation colleges.

However, what remains uncertain is the documents required for admissions to various colleges not only in DU, but in other Indian universities, IIMs and other foreign colleges. Not only ascertaining which documents are required for admissions is a problem, but also the procedure of procurement is unknown to many students.

So, in order to ease out the process of admissions and documents procurement, what follows is a list of documents required for post graduate admissions by every college as you walk in to fill their pre-admission forms –

1. Provisional Certificate

The University of Delhi gives  the official degrees to the graduates in the month of March every year. Hence, the proper degrees of students of class of 2011- 2014 shall be released in the month of March, 2015. (The exact date shall be intimated by the University in mid February itself.)  In place of the official DU degrees, each college issues a provisional certificate to all its students to acknowledge a bonafide association with the college and University. Once available, the certificate can be collected from the college administrative block.

2. Delhi University Semester Mark-sheets

The University of Delhi no longer issues mark sheets to the students, neither semester wise, nor yearly, nor at the end of the course. The students are supposed to take print outs of their score sheets as they check their results online. The printed mark sheet needs to be stamped and attested by the college principals in order to validate it. The mark-sheet without attestation won’t be considered a reliable document.

[caption id="attachment_24420" align="aligncenter" width="671"]mridulres1 The Delhi University Mark-sheet print out to be attested by college principals for verification.[/caption] The print out of the mark-sheet should be taken as early as possible, as the University of Delhi doesn’t maintain the results online for a long time.

3. Migration Certificate

If you are planning to switch over to some university/ college outside the ambit of University of Delhi, you’ll also require the Migration Certificate. The candidates need to fill in forms for issuance of the Migration certificate, form being available at DU’s official website. (Click here  to view the form.)

[caption id="attachment_24421" align="aligncenter" width="621"]Untitled The Migration Certificate form of University of Delhi.[/caption]

The form needs to be submitted at the respective North campus ( Academic Branch?II North Campus, University of  Delhi, Delhi?110007)  and  South campus (Academic Branch, South Campus, University of Delhi, New Delhi?110021)  offices.

The documents to be attached along are the attested DU mark-sheet and provisional certificate along with a fees of Rs. 500.

The certificate can be collected from the same place where the form was submitted within ten working days of application.

4. Class Xth Pass Certificate.

The class Xth pass certificate acts as a proof for the Date of Birth, self attested copies of the same are required to be submitted along the admission forms in all colleges.

5. Category Certificate

If you are seeking admission to any college on basis of  belonging to a category other than General such as the SC/ST/OBC,  you are required to furnish the apt certificate to prove your claim. The certificate should be issued in the candidate’s name. Any certificate in parent’s name shall not be considered reliable for admissions.

The list is however not exhaustive, for different colleges might have some other specific requirements, but it definitely includes the most basic and essential documents to be kept handy for admissions. You could also keep other important certificates, Certificate of Merit, ID proofs, passport size photographs, achievement certificates, LORs etc handy, in case you need to furnish them.

We wish you a quick and hassle free admission to the college of your dreams!

notice, that was sent to the Principals of all colleges by the Dean of colleges, advises the various departments to discuss matters related to calculating the workload, structuring the timetable and so on, in time for the new session. comm syl The syllabi for most Arts papers (apart from language courses like Bengali, Persian and French), Science courses and Commerce have been declared. The students will be studying three papers in each semester as their Main Papers along with Allied Courses. “Well, I think this is a much better approach as compared to the 3+2 pattern that was proposed earlier, which would have raised some serious burden on our batch”, said Brij Pahwa, a Political Science student in DU. For most Science, Commerce and Professional courses mentioned, the college can choose to offer only one or both Allied Courses mentioned for each stream. For Arts courses, the college may choose to offer either one Allied Course to all students in each semester, or offer the two listed courses to half of the students in each semester. For practicals in courses like Psychology, the , the syllabi of erstwhile DC?I (FYUP) is to be followed.   eco eng syl   “The course seems in sync with what was expected. Just that this time there will be three papers in Economics and one of the Allied Course. The Allied Courses seem to provide very less amount of options, though”, said Ayesha, a student of IP College for Women. The Allied Courses mentioned are definitely ambiguous, agreed Vani, a Commerce student at JMC, who went on to say, “While the authorities seem to have tried to make the best of what was available to us as DC I subjects, the instructions for ACs are still unclear”. Bachelor of Management Studies appears to be the only course that has four main papers under each semester. However, Allied Courses are not applicable for them. The new session is right around the corner. Several DU aspirants are waiting to see what their much-awaited college life will be like.
College will definitely bring changes in your life and though the expectations are humongous, to save yourself from disappointment here is a list of things freshers should NOT expect in their first year of college.

#1 – Weekend parties
Oh yes, this is something we all look forward to and there will be weekends where you would be swarmed with parties but there will also be weekends when you will wonder how you are still alive despite the boredom.
On the bright side, this period gives you the strength to stand yourself on those lonesome nights of despair.

200337945-003

#2 – Boring teachers
If you think your teachers are going to be a bunch of boring old professors then you are majorly wrong. Delhi University has a variety of professors and I don’t mean to sound like a geek but some of them will blow your mind with the kind of things they have to teach and the personal efforts they put in every student’s learning. So, yes, be ready for some really cool teachers that might just teach you a thing or two about life.
At the same time, be ready for those boring old professors too.boring teachers

#3 – Minimal Studying
Well this one is half true because you will spend more than half of your semester ignoring the books and exploring everything that the campus has to offer but you will regret this as soon as the semester exams approach and you are left fumbling about in the middle of the night with a bunch of incoherent notes and half finished assignments.
You can always save yourself the trouble, though, and pay a little attention in class. minimal studying

#4 – Love
Oh yes, this one is a myth all right. Let’s just accept we are no Rani Mukerji and there is no SRK waiting for us to fall in love. Some of the lucky ones might find the right ones but more often than not you will just find a couple of awkward creepy moments and remain single all throughout your college life.
The good news is, all the best people in this world are content single ones. love

#5 – No early morning classes
Remember in school when you thought ‘hey, let’s just wait for college; we won’t have to get up early anymore’? Yeah, that’s not going to happen. There will be early morning classes and you would have to drag yourself to them (after you are lagging behind in attendance). So it is better to give up hope right now.

late classes

However don’t let all this bring you down, college life is a process of change and we hope yours is a pleasant one!

All the best freshers!

As the carnival of football ends in Brazil, we bring you a comprehensive analysis of the Good, Bad and Ugly of the FIFA World Cup 2014

The Good

Some of those moments which remain this tournament’s highlight for today and many years to come.

Mario Götze Breaks Latin American Jinx

Germany lifted their fourth world cup in Maracanã, Rio after a very tight match which extended goalless till extra time. The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Mario Götze came off the bench and scored for Die Mannschaft in the 113th minute to seal the deal. Germany were crowned World Cup winners for the first time in 24 years, it is also their first cup after reunification.

Japanese Godliness

japanese-1

The followers of Japan at the FIFA World Cup 2014 waved blue trash bags as balloons to support their national side. Later, they used these bags to collect the trash that had accumulated during the game. This beautiful gesture has inspired many.

James Rodriguez Claims the Golden Boot

The Colombian star James Rodriguez scored six goals in the tournament and claimed the Golden Boot Award. Thomas Muller of Germany who won the Golden Boot four years ago in South Africa scored five goals this year too. 145 goals were scored in the previous segment, though this year the tally has improved significantly to touch the 171 goals mark. The German side has scored the most number of goals in the whole tournament (18).

Klose Magic

Miroslav Klose continued his dream run in this World Cup too and scored 2 goals to replace Brazilian Ronaldo as the all-time highest goal scorer at the World Cup. He now has 16 goals in four FIFA World Cups. He is only the second player in history to score 5 goals in two different World Cups.

Marvellous goalkeeping

Keylor Navas, Guillermo Ochoa, Manuel Neuer, Sergio Romero and Tim Krul were some of the brilliant goalkeepers of this World Cup who changed the script by themselves. Manuel Neuer kept the opponents off the score sheet; thanks to his world class Sweeper-Keeper display. His best performance came against Argentina in the Finals where is succeeded in keeping the Argentine attackers form scoring. For making 25 saves and conceding only 4 goals he has been awarded the Golden Glove.

Group of Death humbled by Costa Rica

Being placed amongst footballing power houses like Uruguay, Italy and England, for many Costa Rica never existed in the tournament. But against all speculations Costa Rica not only managed to qualify for the Round of 16, but they did so as the leaders of their group. They managed to reach the Quarter-finals as well. This was their best performance in World Cup history

Messi’s performance

Lionel-Messi-Argentina-2014-Pic-Football

Messi became the youngest player to represent Argentina at a World Cup when he came on as a substitute for Maxi Rodríguez in the 74th minute against Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, since then the “Best Ever” football player for many had managed to score only once in the last two editions of the World Cup, but this year turned out to be a delight for him and his lovers. He scored 4 times in Brazil but failed to deliver in the Final against Germany. For his dynamic performance he has been awarded the Golden Ball.

The Bad

Some of those moments which left us cringing!

Espana hits the ocean bed

The reigning champions Spain were expected to mesmerise the football universe yet again with their Tiki-Taka, following from their success in recent years. But rather their performance in this tournament turned out a gross embarrassment, as they lost 5 goals to 1 against the Netherlands in their opening match. Spain could not recover from the after effects of the Dutch onslaught in their first match and were eliminated at the group stage itself after their 0-2 loss to Chile.

Neymar’s Injury

neymar

Neymar fractured a vertebra during the quarterfinal match of the tournament against Columbia, following a challenge form Colombian defender Juan Zuniga. He was injured in the 86th minute of play and was immediately carried off the field. Later Rodrigo Lasmar the team doctor told reporters “He will not be in condition to play; he will need a few weeks to be fit again. He is very, very sad.” Pundits believe that his absence gave Germany the edge psychologically way before the Semi-final kick off.

Diego Costa jeered

Diego Costa, the Brazil born Chelsea Striker owed his allegiance to Spain before the World Cup kick off, naturally this ignited discontent amongst the Brazilians. In the group stage match between Spain and Netherlands, whenever Costa made contact with the ball it drew boos from the Brazilian crowd that were repeated throughout. Soon chants of “Costa, deer” took the centre stage (deer is slang for “gay”).

Privacy breach

Two Croatian photographers in their quest to get an exclusive story went beyond desired limits. They hid themselves in the bushes and photographed some of the Croatian players, who were lying naked by the swimming pool. These pictures were wildly publicised through print and social media.

As a result the Croatian team management decided to boycott the media while in Brazil.

Brazilian catastrophe

They were the hosts and the favourites; their take-off was like Apollo 11 but when it was most crucial they failed to deliver and crashed under the pressure of expectations and ambition. Their exit from the home tournament came in the most humiliating manner possible; losing both the Semi-final match as well as the Third Place match on home soil. They suffered their first defeat in a competitive game on home soil since 1975 at the hands of clinical Germany in the Semi-finals. This defeat of 1-7 is now their worst ever defeat. They lost to Netherlands 3-0 in the Third Place match.

Nigerian national football federation banned

FIFA has suspended Nigeria from international football citing government interference in the administration of its national federation.

This means no Nigerian team, can play in regional, continental or international competitions.

After Nigeria’s defeat at the hands France at the Round 16 of the World Cup, the High Court of Nigeria ruled that its federation would cease to run the national team, handing over the role to a government civil servant.

This interference breaches the FIFA rules by which member associations are obliged to manage their own affairs “independently and with no influence from third parties.”

The Ugly

Most unfortunate incidents which should not have happened

Racism haunts yet again

FIFA for long has campaigned against racism and tried to keep the beautiful game away from any such controversies. President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil also pledged a “World Cup against racism,” declaring “Sports should be no place for prejudice.” Still on various occasions racist elements blemished the event. According to the Fare Report, FIFA has significantly failed to punish such incidents, such as the “homophobic” chanting’s by the Brazilian and Mexico supporters, explicit banners displayed by followers of Russia, Germany and Croatia.

Neymar’s unceremonious exit from the tournament triggered the torrent of racist insults against the Colombian, Juan Camilo Zúñiga, expressing fury over Neymar’s injury, some Brazilians took to social media to express their rage with racial slurs, showing how far the host of the World Cup and FIFA remains from achieving that goal.

Hannibal strikes again

luis-suarez-bites-giorgio-chiellini-2014-world-cup

Luis Suarez has been banned for four months from all football-related activities, ruling him out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup midway. Uruguay team management said they will appeal against the decision, calling it an “excessive decision” for which “there was not enough evidence”. This strict action has been triggered by Suarez’s third biting incident in his football career. Giorgio Chiellini of Italy became his prey during a group stage match. This incident was certainly the most shameful and unfortunate, throughout this year’s tournament.

Indian movies have been  inspired by the University of Delhi from long time now, be it Anuskha – Ranveer starrer Band Baja Baraat, Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar or other low budget movies like Do Dooni Chaar and Fukrey. All of these flicks  have numerous songs and scenes shot at the Delhi University college campuses like Hans Raj , St. Stephen’s  and Miranda House.

However, this time, it isn’t the college campus that has caught the eye of the Bollywood stakeholders, but a DU chapter that has been in headlines for almost a year now. If rumors are to be believed, a leading production house, Pharma Productions, has been inspired by the Delhi University – FYUP controversy and is aiming to en-cash on it, by making a movie on the same theme.

The same production banner has been associated with the rumors of Hindi remake of a famous English movie based on an international best seller novel, earlier this month.

“This movie would be our tribute to the young student’s movement that failed the authorities and made them submit to the call of majority. The story isn’t only true and inspiring but also a message as to how no one dictate the youth of India which is fully aware of their rights.” said Mr. Charan Mohar, the Production Head.

The teams for research have been made and are already in function. The Design and Shooting crew is evaluating places where shooting could be done at, North Campus (DU), Connaught Place, Hauz Khas Village and Satya Niketan being the prime locations.

“The creative team is working on the idea. Of course, we are convinced that the movie would be received well by the audiences, but a lot of home work needs to be done yet.” said Ekta, a creative team member.

The story would be an outstation student’s narrative of the FYUP’s introduction, conduct, fall outs, importance and roll back and the after effects. The movie would be made in a complete Bollywood style, with the garnish of songs, action, romance and comedy.

“This movie would be a celebration of our hardships, turmoil and victory, we are eagerly waiting for it.” said the students representative of the only FYUP batch of 2013-14.

While the major DU officials’ characters shall be played by veteran Bollywood actors, the male and female leads and other side roles shall be played by the DU students. The auditions for selection  shall be held in numerous colleges after the academic session of 2014-15 commences. The interested students could send in their CVs at [email protected]

The movie is scheduled to go on floor in December this year, so that the shooting could go on uninterrupted in the semester break.  If all goes as per the plan, the movie is all set to hit the silver screen in the summer of 2015.
