There was something about that little big city, the city with skyscrapers rising beyond their means. It lacked a skyline. The only horizon it shared with infinity was the abandoned old town circumferencing its sidewalks. Unlike the multi-storeyed giants, the broken shacks seemed to sprout up like weeds clutching at the loose remains of fertility, sapping in all they could before they were inevitably killed by the giant’s shadow. And yet, ironically, the mighty buildings needed those dark fissures to complete their being just like the bejeweled church needed its tattered pilgrim staring up at its grandeur in admiration, knowing he could only pray to be forgiven for the flaws he held and yet never become flawless enough to dawn the purple velvet and reach a higher God.

It was drizzling when he arrived. The sun had almost set. The gigantic glass exterior of the buildings created a replica of the setting sun on its walls. It made one wonder at the power of the glass to keep the true and false from merging by a fraction of an inch. Ca studied how the geometrical architecture and neat symmetry lent a severe sense of dominance, like an army preparing to march into war. The view from the French glass of the twenty ninth floor of his hotel room made everything seem miniscule beyond recognition, making it hard for him to see the rim of the ghost town which was camouflaged by the synthetic neon of the city.

After much thought, Ca made a call.
“It’s Ca Damon. Tell Mr. Adams I have refused to make the blueprints for his building. No skyscraper shall be built there. And cancel all my meetings for tomorrow”
The Cartier struck midnight.
He put the alarm for 5AM and went to sleep.

Ca boarded the first metro out of the city. He did not need a map to know where he was going, knowing the place would still be where it stood twenty eight years ago. And with that realisation flashed before him all the memories he had locked away the day they took him away to another world. He remembered her everyday. He remembered her face as she said goodbye to him from the broken window of the little blue house one last time before Colonel Damon took away the bleeding ten year old boy into the tank and vanished around the next corner. He remembered coming back to find nobody home.

Getting off at the last station, he looked around. He knew he was in the right place, breathing the air that was once his own. The dark gates of the ghetto stood like guards to an ancient city where every dilapidated building, every burnt house told a story. The decaying houses stood around looking over him as he walked, their remains bringing back a crimson history. Unlike the uniformity of the city, every building held an individualistic appeal and location which was authentic to its being. The early workers stopped to look at the man in the silk jacket.
After fifteen minutes of what seemed like an aimless stroll, Ca stopped before a stained cerulean house with rusty old broken green windows, moss adorning its dewy walls. It had stooped with age. But every part of the tattered building proved its strength, demanding the attention of the higher God with all its flaws intact.
It had been thirty five years since the war ended, but the memories of his past still remained in the house. Sitting on the porch, holding his mother’s kerchief, Ca looked at the silhouette of the gigantic monsters, monsters he had built all his life to hide the broken glass of his frayed home. No more.
“I did it for you, ma.”
In that moment, he realized it had never been him looking over the town; it was the town that had looked over him all along.

Q. We have been friends for two years. I like her very much and she has also been giving me the same signs of late. So how can I propose to her? Please give me some suggestions.

A. Oho, this is an age old problem. Many people want to know how to propose to their beloved. There are many ways I say, but it is completely dependent on the likes and dislikes of the girl you love. Since you know this lucky girl for two years now, you should be aware of them, or something she always wanted to do in some place (Amma means normal daily things, dirty boy). These things, when they happen, are very special and will be a nice way to confess your love for her. It will be a perfect aww moment. Get her chocolates (also a good aphrodisiac), a teddy bear, a card, or anything she likes. But if she doesn’t like it mushy like my coconut chutney, then don’t do it. But ensure that you do something that she likes. With the rains coming in, Delhi will become as romantic as the backwaters of my Kerala and that will surely win her heart.

Q. I am in a relationship and a friend of mine asked me which base I am in. I didn’t know what the bases are and I said one. He started laughing at me saying that after being in a relationship for 8 months I am a loser to be in base 1. I don’t even know what it is. Please tell.
A. Aiyo, this base-vase thing is a new business only. In my times, we had only one thing, and made babies out of it. Anyway for your benefit I shall explain it to you. Every relationship has stages (actually it is reached by people who are not in a relationship also, so lets call it stages of intimacy) which is characterised by a number from 1 to 4. Base 1 is simple kiss, base 2 is tops off, base 3 is pants off, and base 4 is appreciating the human body in its original beauty. Now I would assume you know what I mean. As far as your friend is concerned, tell him to mind his own business, or ask him where he has reached and state a number higher.

Friendship Day is special to all of us, or at least friendship is. The DUB writers all got together to bring to you some of the most memorable sitcoms, characters, movies that celebrate friendship.

Beaches
If you’ve heard Bette Midler’s unforgettable ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, Beaches is where it came from. The story talks of the friendship shared by struggling singer CC Bloom (Bette Midler), a free-spirited Bronx Jew; and the uptight posh San Francisco Protestant Hillary Essex (Barbara Hershey) through thirty years of highs and lows. The realistic evolution of a relationship between two starkly opposite people where they build their own middle ground in the midst of the inevitabilities of life gives us something to relate to at every step and thus makes Beaches highly memorable.

Calvin & Hobbes
Calvin and his (toy) tiger Hobbes share a peculiar relationship, with Hobbes providing the voice of reason, and Calvin the twist, in the relationship. Best seen when on being handed a ‘friendship contract’ by Calvin, Hobbes points out that “people are friends because they want to be, not because they have to be.”

Harry and Hermione
Harry Potter’s relationship with his other best friend, Hermione Granger has the elements of a typical brother- sister relationship. Hermione is the head of R&D of the Harry Potter Adventure Inc., and her friendship with Harry helps both of them see things from a drastically different perspective from each one’s own viewpoint. One wonders if Harry could have emerged victorious, had it not been for the unflinching love and support that he got from Ron and Hermione.

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn
An unlikely friendship for the time, Finn, the wild ‘un, and Sawyer, the quintessential city slicker. Their mutual fascination for the other’s way of life was the core of their friendship. And being friends in the late 19th century didn’t mean chilling out at pubs, it meant boat escapades down the Mississippi, rescuing slaves, and escaping from bloodthirsty bandits!

Jai and Veeru
There were a lot of memorable characters in the masala masterpience that was Sholay, but none quite endeared to the public as much as the duo of Veeru, played by the hot headed Dharmendra and Jai, played by Amitabh Bacchan (save for Amjad Khan’s badass Gabbar act though, duh). Probably the most famous celluloid friends to ever have been, Jai and Veeru have since become a cult icon, and the fabulous “Yeh Dosti” almost an anthem. Theirs was a friendship of legend, and nothing quite says brotherly bonding like chasing after hot maidens together and royally kicking the ass of the most badass bad guy of all time!

The Little Rascals
Childhood days – the fun and frolic, the innocence and the sense of being carefree. This movie is all that and much more with a bunch of neighbourhood urchins showing their penchant for go-carting and “women hating.” A take on friendship in its most innocent form: the movie has spunk and charm and a fair share of slapstick humor with Alfalfa’s attempts to charm ‘the girl of his dreams’ while Spanky sabotages it all to Butch and Woim’s antics to steal the go-cart. Catch it for its guilelessness!

FR.I.E.N.D.S
Any mention of friendship is incomplete without the iconic sitcom, Friends. Love it, hate it, you have to admit that it has its moments. The ritual of the six whiling away time at Central Perk, the complicated relationships and the job woes were amusing. And everybody needs a Chandler for those witticisms!

Now that the first week is past and the grind of classes has begun, freshers, keep your eyes peeled for audition notices while we tell you a little about the societies that can be a huge part of your three years.

The Drama/ Street Play Society: Be it stage productions or street plays, the drama societies of every college no doubt add the colour to campus with their mind-blowing performances. Being part of the drama society also comes with long hours of practice at getting your act just right plus oodles of fun.
The Debating Society: Debaters are generally the ones you see in D-school (in North Campus at least) discussing politics, economy, philosophy or just how awesome the last tournament was. The ‘Debsocs’ require awareness of current issues, a grasp of logic, a willingness to learn and practice and an insatiable capacity for living it up!
The Film and Photography Society: These are the people you just can’t get hold of because they are busy watching, swapping, discussing movies or the ones who stumble all the time since they only see the world through their lens. All you need is a camera and a love for the motion picture!
The ‘Choreo’ Society: They revel in themes, songs and choreography. They dance till they drop [literally] and swear by the intoxication. If that’s your passion, then this society promises you a brilliant, jiving three years.

The Fashion Society: They are the budding fashionistas, adding the ‘oomph factor’ to any college and they demand the attitude, hard work, patience and a sense of style that is a must for anyone on the ramp.

The Indian/Western Music Society: All the jamming and singing which provides a lovely break from the monotony of classes is the Music Society. Knowing how to play an instrument, a good voice or just a finely tuned ear for music is all you need to be a part of these performers!

And there are more, just look closely on every notice-board you see. There’s something for everyone who loves panel discussions, the environment, MUNs, art…the list is endless!

David Robert Joseph Beckham, 35 year old soccer star, celebrity, entertainer, and most of all a family man, is a living legend to many youngsters like me all over the world, and more so in a cricket frenzied part of the world. Many of us know Beckham only as a soccer star, a free kick specialist, and the man who scored from half line. But there is more to him than what meets the eye.
It’s the BUBBLE, as Beckham refers to his family and their effervescent world in his biography ‘My Side’. Beckham with Victoria and their 3 sons Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz make a wonderful picture. Beckham learned what comes along with all the fame the hard way when he had got various threat calls from kidnappers intimidating to kidnap his family. In his book ‘My side’ Beckham wrote “We were upset and scared, but you can’t just hide and hope it will all go away. My family’s safety is the most important thing in the world; it’s the same for any dad. So in the days after, it was a case of trying to work out what we could do.”
In his autobiography, Beckham mentions that they were like any other family; they shopped, went on holiday, and spent time with each other. With both mum and dad as celebrities; with the whole circus of paparazzi, publicity, finding their names on the front page every day they were still able to keep the ‘bubble’ bouncing. Beckham also underlined his joy on being a father, describing it as an unbelievable feeling only a dad can understand, the feeling was unique for all his three children but still not any one greater than the other.
Once when United were due training before their game against Chelsea, Brooklyn had his first nativity play at nursery school. Beckham like any other dad in the world was desperate to be at his son’s nursery school but he was denied permission from the coach and ended up winding up Sir Alex. This was a critical reason in the immensely written- about rift between Sir Alex Ferguson where Ferguson felt that life was never same for David after his marriage. He stated, “He was never a problem until he got married. He used to go into work with the academy coaches at night time; he was a fantastic young lad. Getting married into that entertainment scene was a difficult thing – from that moment, his life was never going to be the same. He is such a big celebrity; football is only a small part.”
His professional career has been a rollercoaster ride, he has seen his glory days come and go by. He has won accolades, silverware for his clubs, been through many tear-jerking injuries and some ghastly criticism (was held responsible for England’s 1998 world cup loss to Argentina where he was red carded). He was at his peak at United and people still wonder what if he hadn’t left, what if he was still at Manchester United? Probably, he would have achieved even greater heights but after all that has been said and done; the bottom line is that David Beckham in an illustrious career, in the face of ups and downs has been a perfect family person and an idol to many people in and outside the football fraternity.
