After the earth shattering success of its flagship Mi3, the Chinese giant Xiaomi is now ready to capture the entry-level Indian smartphone market with its latest offering – Redmi 1s. If you (still) don’t know much about the brand, Xiaomi (Shia-o-me) is the world’s 5th largest smartphone manufacturer and is hailed as “The Apple of China” for its quality, innovation and massive popularity. Its reception in India has been incredible, it goes “Out of Stock” within seconds of replenishment!

Known for providing high end specification at dirt cheap prices, Xiaomi 1s surely delivers more than expected. Packed with a QUALCOMM Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz along with 1 gigabyte of RAM. The phone features a 4.7’ IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (312 PPI), coated with Dragontrail glass for making it durable. The dual SIM device, comes with an 8MP (1080p) rear shooter and a snappy 1.6MP front camera (720p). With 8 gigs of expandable memory the phone also support USB On-The-Go (OTG) – you can run USB peripheral like pen drives, keyboards, hard drives, etc. with the help of an adaptor. The phone runs of Android 4.3 (MIUI) and is powered by a 2000mAH battery. These are the only two things that somewhat pinch as Jellybean now seems ancient and the battery is a 100mAH small, however they seem minute snags in the overall package.

If you find the specifications alluring, you’ll be blown away by the price. Initially priced at INR 6,999, Redmi 1s has been launched at INR 5,999, exclusively on Flipkart. To be honest, it actually seems under priced for the monstrous specs it offers. It not only trashes its immediate competitor Moto E (Rs. 6,999) but also outdoes the highly efficient Moto G, now priced at around 10k. The registrations have started & the flash sales will begin from 2nd September. (Do remember, only those who register can buy the phone!)

The fact that Xiaomi is now highly popular in India (courtesy Mi3), the sales are predicted to be groundbreaking!  So if you are looking for a powerful phone, that doesn’t feel heavy on your pockets, Xiaomi’s latest may just be the one!

His latest acting-production venture ‘Happy New Year’ too, is setting new trends in the world of marketing. Its much-awaited theatrical trailer, would be released on WhatsApp on August 14. For the first time a movie would be using this popular instant messaging app to launch a trailer! A major reason for WhatsApp’s neglect by other promoters, has been its inability to send a broadcast message to more than 250 users at once. But in Khan’s case, WhatsApp has removed this restriction, giving Red Chilies Entertainment a vast reach. The trailer launch has already gained attention and has been trending on Twitter for quite some time now. HNY2 To get the trailer on your phone just drop a WhatsApp message or leave a missed call on +91 9819020202.  That’s it! You will receive a personalized clip on your phone as soon as it’s out! Alternatively, you may give a missed call on 18002004646 (Don’t know why two numbers, but ‘I assume’ this one is for non-WhatsApp users!).  The trailer would be screened in theatres from August 15th, 2014. The movie is scheduled for its release on October 24th, 2014. Apart from WhatsApp, HNY has been running successful online campaigns across other social media platforms as well.  However, WhatsApp is specifically important, as this development may ignite a new trend – from theaters to televisions, from TVs to computers and now directly onto our phones! With Flappy Bird pulled down by GEARS Studios, there was a vacuum that needed to be filled. Flappy Bird taught us a new way to kill time – traveling long distances, waiting in never ending ques or attending a boring lecture (specifically!), it made it all seem fun. Though now, there are many (MANY!) alternatives to the game, it seems we somehow got over it – We don’t need to tap & flap anymore! But what if I tell you there’s an antidote – a viable alternative to the Flappy Bird! To base my claim, this game has recorded over 2.5 million downloads already in under 2 months on AppStore alone, with 1 million of its downloads occurring in the last three days!! So what makes Timberman special?

timberman-gra
To be precise, all you’re doing is chopping down a tree trunk, by tapping on either side while avoiding the descending branches. Simple. However, after a few games (along with a few infuriating deaths), it hits! You soon find yourself drowned… Once you figure out the controls, timing & pacing and are able to hold on for a while, things get more interesting – the speed changes & you are required to tap faster, observe quicker and of course, shout louder if & when you fail! Once you make a good score, you can’t help but try and beat it, again & again… That’s it! You are now addicted to Timberman. You are playing it everywhere – couch, dining table, bedroom (bathroom anyone?).

timberman

One of the reasons it resembles Flappy Bird is because of the similar 8 bit look they share. Yet unlike Flappy Bird, it offer character & scenario customizations.  Much like Flappy Bird, the time between consecutive games is less, so you are constantly hooked to your phone! Incase you still need a testament, the game is among the top 5 apps (overall) in more than 20 countries and is the most-downloaded game in 8 countries (as of today)! The game is available for FREE on both Android & iOS So girls & guys, pick up your phones & indulge… ^-^

With a new smartphone launching every other day, you may start believing it’s getting hard to maintain their distinctiveness. Nope! There are a lot of phones around, but some phones are special… Announced earlier this year at CES 2014 by the Taiwanese consumer electronics giant ASUS, the Zenfone series was destined to up the ante & further intensify the competition. The Zenfone triad features Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5 & Zenfone 6, the suffixed digits are based on the screen size!      And, they are here! ASUS launched these smartphones in India this week.

Zenfone 4

Zenfone 4 has two variants, a 4-inch (A400CG) model priced at Rs. 5,999, and a 4.5-inch (A450CG) model for Rs. 6,999. Both feature a dual core 1.2GHz Intel® AtomZ2520 processor (with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading Technology), making them highly competent. There are two cameras – a full-HD 5MP rear shooter & a basic secondary camera. Apart from the 8 GB internal storage, they support microSD cards upto 64 GB. They are available in five vivacious colors — Pearl White, Charcoal Black,Cherry Red, Sky Blue, Solar Yellow. The 4 inch model comes packs a 1600 mAh battery with a WVGA (480 x 800 Pixels) screen, while the 4.5 incher has a 1750 mAh battery with a FWVGA (854 x 480 Pixels) screen. The battery life should be decent considering the power efficiency of Intel’s processors

ZenFone 5

ZenFone 5 comes with a large 5-inch IPS screen with an excellent resolution of 1280 x 720-pixel (294 ppi). ZenFone 5 has a snappy, energy-efficient Intel Atom Z2580 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz, coupled with a 2 GB RAM and sports a brilliant 8-megapixel camera at the back. Its 2-megapixel front camera should yield great selfies! Features like PenTouch, GloveTouch, PixelMaster, etc (refer to Zen-Tastic features below).

Like Zenfone 4, the 8 GB internal storage can be extended using microSD.  The 2110mAh battery makes the runtime decent. Priced at Rs. 9999, Zenfone 5 is a jackpot for sure! It also has a 16 GB variant priced at 12,999 (sweet!)

ZenFone 5 is available in four attractive colors — Charcoal Black, Pearl White, Cherry Red, and Champagne Gold.

Zenfone 6

And now for the biggie! Zenfone 6 boasts a humungous 6 inch screen which is vivid & vibrant, but a screen resolution of 1280×720 pixels for a 6 incher (245 ppi) is nothing exceptional.  At its heart lies a dual core Intel Atom Z2580 generously clocked at 2 GHz topped with 2 gigs of RAM making the device powerful & robust.  The 13 megapixel PixelMaster camera & a front facing 2 MP camera make the device an excellent camera phone! With a capacious battery of 3300mAH the phone shall last long enough. The 16 GB device with expandable storage is power packed with features like ASUS PenTouch, GloveTouch, PixelMaster, etc (refer to Zen-tastic Features below). An exclusive feature is ASUS’ SonicMaster audio technology that enhances user’s music experience.

Priced at only Rs. 16,999, Zenfone 6 is surely a worthy alternative to the expensive flagships!

Zen-tasitic Features: What sets Zenfones apart?

If you were swayed by the pricing and specifications of the Zenfone trio, you will be delighted to know that the best is yet to come! Zenfone’s power is not only in its hardware, but the software that makes it unconventional.

ZenUI:

Zenfones feature a gorgeous new user interface from ASUS — ZenUI. Exclusively for ASUS devices, ZenUI blends extensive functionality with elegant simplicity.  ZenFone knows what you need – it tailors itself on your moods & thoughts.

It also includes a free open messenger, powered by Omlet Chat. That lets users share almost any kind of content easily with anyone, on any phone for free. ZenUI also includes enhanced Android apps for ZenFone, making it more productive. The ASUS email app, for example, allows messages to be read by thread, In the web browser, Smart Reader Mode automatically adjusts the background tone to reduce strain on the eyes, while the Gallery has an enhanced online synchronization. The ZenUI completely redefines user experience. The phones come with jellybean on board and are upgradable to KitKat out of the box, the ZenUi has been optimized for the same as well.

PixelMaster:

PixelMaster is a technology developed by ASUS that combines hardware, software and optical design to deliver better quality images in a variety of scenarios. Its includes :

Low Light Mode: Present in Zenfone 5 and 6, Low Light Mode enables you take clear and  brighter images in low lighting conditions by combining multiple pixels and using image processing algorithms, to increase the light sensitivity by up to 400% and boost color contrast by up to 200%. Surprisngly, this technology is also available for video recording.

High Quality Imaging Hardware:

The imaging hardware of the smartphones are truly extraordinary. The ZenFone 5 uses a Sony BSI CMOS sensor while the ZenFone 6 utilizes a Panasonic BSI CMOS sensor. Both sensors have a pixel size of 1.12µm which is remarkable for its price category, as premium smartphones such as the Galaxy S5 have similar pixel size.

Zenfone 5 & 6 also carry Largan lens, which are used by the Apple iPhones, are The 5-piece lens will deliver clean, sharp photos while the image sensors aids in color accuracy and uniformity. The deployed lens also has an aperture of f/2.0, which enhances the overall low-light sensitivity.

Depth of Field Mode:

The Depth of Field Mode allows you to capture photos with singled isolated subjects set against a blurred background. Similar to the Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2, etc.  where you  hold the phone still for the camera to take multiple shots. In the case of the ZenFone, it will take 2 images after you press the shutter button. This feature is available on the all the three Zenfones.

Selfie Mode:

With selfies being the “in thing” these days, ASUS seems pretty much updated. The front camera on the ZenFone (all)  will automatically detect when the selected number of people are in the frame & begins a countdown before taking 3 photos. You can then select the best shot to save and share with your friends.

Time Rewind:

Same as the Time Shift on BlackBerry 10, Time Rewind takes multiple pics before & after you press the shutter so that the chances of you getting the perfect shot increases dramatically. To be precise, Time Rewind records two seconds prior and one second after the photo is clicked . During this 3 second period, a total of 31 photographs are taken for you to choose from!

Other features like Panosphere, ClearZoom, Smart Remove, Beutification, GIF recording and many more make Zenfones one of the most efficient camera phones – ever!

Asus cloud:

The Zenfones come with free 5 GB Lifetime ASUS Web Storage. Which is one of the leading corporate cloud storages services

Conclusion

With budget phone market constantly expanding as giants like Motorola, Nokia, HTC, etc. decide to develop devices for this category, ASUS Zenfones surely seem to have a bright future. With a splendid synthesis of hardware & software, Asus Zenfone is a phone to watch out for.

ASUS Zenfone is available for preorder on Flipkart with attractive pre-order discounts on Zenfone accessories. Since, it’s a well-established company, the phones would also be available in ASUS stores across the country as well, along with other leading mobile stores.

May you find your Zen!

Gone are the days when the launch of a new Blackberry phone used to excite us. Today, Blackberry has lost a significant market share (From over 50% in 2009 to below 5% in 2014) to its peers, namely Apple & Samsung. However, the much hyped Blackberry Z3 was hailed as a “game changer”. Launched in Indonesia early this year, Z3 did give a modest push to BB’s sales, primarily due to its cheap price tag of $190 (INR 11500 approx). Its Indian launch (scheduled for 25th June), was thus awaited.

In terms of specifications, Blackberry Z3 packs in a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 clocked at 1.2 Ghz along with a 1.5 GB RAM. The phone sports a rear 5 megapixel camera Full HD and a 1.1 megapixel front facing camera (Selfie anyone?). The phone comes with 8 gigs of internal storage & supports micro SD cards. The 5 inch screen has a relatively modest resolution of 540×960 (220 ppi) but looks vibrant. The phone features a powerful 2500 mAh non removable battery, which is sure to provide an exceptional battery runtime.

Coming to the software, Z3 runs on BlackBerry 10.2.1 OS. Apart from being extremely sophisticated & efficient, BB 10.2 allows you to run android apps, on your Blackberry. Though not through Google’s Play Store, BB OS supports APK files directly or through 3rd party appstores like Amazon and Snap.  Though some apps are incompatible, this feature alone seems to be a great incentive. Incidentally, Blackberry’s own appstore (BlackBerry World) has grown and showcases all relevant apps. Z3 also brings Blackberry Maps to India which provides for a worthy navigation experience. In the ‘looks department’, the phone seems sturdy and despite of its plastic built feels quite premium, something you would expect from the Canadian giant.

However, despite being a decent offering, Blackberry Z3 may not aid the company’s comeback at least in India because of its ignorant pricing. The success of Moto G, Moto E & scores of other budget handset clearly indicate that users want better phones, at better prices. Blackberry Z3 is being launched in India at a price tag of Rs.15990, with a discount of Rs.1000 on pre order.

Though not at all expensive, the pricing is definitely in congruent with the modest specification of the device. A dual core processor, a 5 MP camera & a low resolution screen at 16k – seems like a bad deal! Had it been introduced at the same price as in Indonesian market, this phone definitely could have revived the sinking company. Though BlackBerry India justified the move bu saying that  “the VAT structures and Customs Duty does not allow the company to launch the phone in India at the $200 price point it is sold in Indonesia now”, this phone may not appeal to the masses, who can opt in for a more wholesome Android experience along with similar or even better specs from other major vendors.

The pre-orders have begun and the phone is likely to hit the market by the  2nd week of July.

Thought Facebook lost to WhatsApp & Viber? Well think again! The social networking giant, is still aspiring to make a mark in the world of instant messaging (guess buying your peers ain’t enough : P).

Facebook recently rolled out updates for its Messenger app for Android and iOS users & is simultaneously disabling the inbuilt chat feature present in the Facebook app  . For Android, the Facebook Messenger app has been updated to version 4.0, and for iOS to version 4.1.

Can this be a game changer? Let’s find out!

The Android update introduces features seen in the Facebook Messenger 4.0 for iOS released in end of March. This includes group messaging, as well as photo & message forwarding. The interface has been redesigned, and provides a great user experience. Also, much like WhatsApp, users can now pin contact shortcuts to their home screens – a feature also available in the new iOS app. You create a shortcut icon of any conversation with any of your friends and   the shortcut will open that particular chat window directly.

One feature that provides Facebook an edge over WhatsApp is the app’s ability to make free calls (via Wifi or mobile data) in all countries! Similar to Viber & Skype, users can call active friends without incurring any carrier charges. Had Facebook introduced video calls, it would have overpowered Apple’s FaceTime as well, hands down!

Facebook Messenger showcases enough features to blast the competition. For instance, the Chat Heads feature alerts you when you have a new message: while you are using some other app,  a bubble with the sender’s face pops up, and you can access the chat by tapping the face.  There’s a good collection of free sticker and smileys available. You can display your exact location to friends when you send a specific message or hide your location. Facebook Messenger has a Record Voice feature, which lets you record audio and then send it, similar to WhatsApp.

favebook4

Messenger allows you to group chat with up to 250 people at once (unlike Viber’s 40 and WhatsApp’s 30 group participants). You can also text those in your contacts, whom you aren’t friends with on Facebook!

Apart from the absence of Video Calling, another letdown is the apps inability to send videos, contacts, etc! Also, in a group chat, the option to leave the group is – missing! The app doesn’t allow you to log out as well (that’s creepy!).  Having a separate application for chatting is also very strange. Why can’t they integrate the same in the existing Facebook app? In fact by removing the messaging feature from the Facebook app,  Messenger is more of  a compulsion!

Barring these minor flaws the app is very efficient & looks refreshing. It offers all the features touted by the peers and even more!

The App / Update is available for Free on Google PlayStore & Apple AppStore .

If your app requires more than one function, don’t worry, you will later be able to add these as tabs.

Next you need to add in the source, which depends on the type of app you are creating. For example, if you are converting a website to an app you need to add the URL. Download the APK file and check it for yourself. Once you are satisfied with you application you may wanna share it with the world or use it yourself. You can share the download link for anyone to download the appe. You may also wanna browse the ‘Distribute’ section for further sharing options.

AppsGeyser also lets you earn through your apps. If your app gets downloaded 100 times (No ads will be displayed otherwise), Click on ‘Monetization’ from top menu and opt in for a Revenue Program. Half of the profits will be shared by you (50-50)!

Thats it! This whole procedure should take you less than 5 minutes & without any technical knowledge you successfully created an app, on your own! So go ahead & create apps – show off, flaunt, share, learn & earn!
