With February’s arrival, love has started to fill the air. Going with the festive cheer, DU Beat proudly announces the launch of its new column titled: ‘DUB Ne Bana Di Jodi’. As clear from the name itself, the column will be all about match making among DU Beat’s avid readers.

The weekly column would involve the declaration of a theme on which the interested candidates would be required to send in their views along with personal information, dating preferences (we’re LGBT friendly!) and a photo, the same one that happens to be on their Adhaar cards ( for the sake of uniformity).

The entries shall be evaluated by the hard working DU Beat team on basis of knowledge, writing skills, spontaneity, grammar and wit. The short listed candidates shall be further matched by the team on basis of their expressed views. Once you’re matched with a potential candidate, the date shall be planned at exclusive and utterly romantic locations such as the Lodhi Gardens, Central Park (CP) and Delhi Metro stations on a mutually agreed date and time.

Not only does DU Beat intend to help you find a date, but our talented photographers shall also accompany you to capture each moment for you. Moreover, our dedicated HR team members shall stick along to manage issues during the date and counsel/console the parties in case things don’t work out.

If the matched couples complete 6 months together, they shall get a golden opportunity to attend the DU Beat weekly meetings. If a couple sticks together for a year, they shall get an option to join the DU Beat team and also win a DVD collection of movies like Alone, Happy New Year, Tevar, Jai Ho and other such path breaking releases to watch together and to deepen their bond.

The topic for this week is: ‘Should Bajrang Dal be useful for once?’ Send in your entries at [email protected] latest by February 12th, 2015. Hope we help find you some love!

Disclaimer: At Bazinga, we’re just kidding; everything’s fair in war and in ‘love’ after all.

st January 2015 as a part of the celebration of International Year of Light by the University of Delhi at Acharya Narendra Dev College by the SPIE student Chapter. The SPIE Student Chapter at ANDC was one of the few selected institutions worldwide to have received the optics education outreach grant. This outreach programme was aimed at promoting optics and photonics at the school level. The primary objective of this programme was to provide the school students a practical hands-on experience that shall benefit them in enhancing their conceptual skills in the areas concerning optics. The activity involved SPIE student chapter members of Acharya Narendra Dev College visiting various schools across Delhi and conducting a hands-on workshop for the school students wherein they demonstrated the “Wave Optics” and “Geometrical Optics” developed by them using some comprehensible and unconventional pedagogical tools like CCD, light sensors etc. in order to simplify the understanding of complex topics of optics. Optics Fair 2015 was thus organized as an extension to this optics outreach activity which witnessed the active participation of 20 different schools where these workshops were conducted. Their students came up with some innovative optics-based projects which were judged under senior and junior category. Kashish Madan [email protected]]]>

1. DU still awaits AICTE approval for B.Tech Courses The year 2013 saw thousands of students enrolling themselves in the University of Delhi under the FYUP system. The coming months witnessed the rollback of the same. While most of the courses were reverted to the TYUP system, the B.Tech courses were retained as four year courses. [caption id="attachment_29620" align="aligncenter" width="960"]btech B.Tech students of University of Delhi protesting at North Campus, demanding AICTE approval for their course on February 9th, 2015.[/caption] But the mere survival of the courses has not lessened the worries of the students pursuing them. No college offering these courses has paid any attention to seek AICTE’s i.e. All India Council for Technical Education’s approval for the same. The future of more than 6000 students is left dangling for want of the AICTE approval which is needed for any B.Tech degree to be a legal one. ABVP, in their manifestos, had promised AICTE approval for the B.Tech courses but this hasn’t yielded any result yet. For detailed information on the B.Tech issue, visit here.

2. ‘Choice Based Credit System’ to be implemented

Conforming to the University Grants Commission’s directive for the adoption of a uniform Choice Based Credit System across all the universities in India, Delhi University may witness changes in the way the students are marked in the examinations. The idea is to ensure seamless mobility of students across the higher education institutions in the country as well as abroad, along with maintaining grade uniformity. This will especially aid migration from one college or university to another. A committee of seven members has been formed to draft a discussion paper on key issues like curriculum revision, examination and assessment systems and accountability of evaluators. cbds The members of the Academic Council are demanding that the implementation of the system be deferred to the next academic session, because the teachers have already faced a lot of problems owing to the semester system and the recently introduced FYUP. The final decision will be taken by the Executive Council and Academic Council after a meeting regarding the same. For detailed information on the Choice based credit system, visit here.

3. Irregularities in the admission process

The last two academic years saw a lot of commotion in the admission season because of the FYUP fiasco. As a result, many ambiguities and irregularities in the admission system ensued. Students this year expect to be informed about percentage cuts which will be implemented if a subject is missing on the mark-sheet. Confusions also abound when applicants don’t know the final cut-offs for a course for different streams. The formula of ‘best of four subjects’ also varies from college to college. For ECA or Sports quota admissions, students wish to see coordinated schedules where scheduled of different colleges don’t clash. This system should also be standardised across all college. The structure of entrance exams in the University has also been seeing constant changes. After Bachelor of Business Economics, Bachelor of Financial & Investment Accounting, Bachelor of Bachelor of Business Studies replaced Bachelor of Management Studies, the group discussion and personal interview rounds were also dropped. Entrances like CJET and CATE for Journalism and English respectively are also sought to be be-indtroduced by many members of the faculty. Such tests and entrances projected the students to fair sense of competition and encouraged them to work hard for meeting the course requirements.

Disclaimer: Bazinga is DU Beat’s weekly column of almost believable fake news!

Influenced by the totally newsworthy suit worn by Narendra Modi during Obama’s visit last week, the college sweatshirt business in DU is in a state of boom as manufacturers are porting the Prime Minister’s style to colleges of Delhi University. Now, for all those bad hair days on which one doesn’t want people to even look at their face, students have the option of buying a custom sweatshirt with their own names pinstriped in gold in the front and their college’s logo at the back.

Sweatshirts are an important feature of college life as they invoke pride of belonging to a particular institution and this revolutionary variant of the same is taking it to the next level. Dubbed as the narcissist’s dress code on Twitter, the cloak is finding a lot of takers in University campuses.

Selfies in the sweatshirt have already started floating around Instagram and Facebook feeds with the hashtags, #Just NarcissisticThings and #Mitron.

The sweatshirt is priced much lower than Modi’s Rs.10 lakh suit at just Rs.55,000 and comes with EMI and house-mortgage options. You can also avail a discount of Rs.5000 by flashing your iPhone 6 (gold variant only) or Jan Dhan Yojana bank passbook while booking. The word on the street is that not only are these becoming popular among the students, a few teachers have placed orders too. Acche din, indeed!

th death anniversary, Indraprastha College for Women and Lady Shri Ram College for Women held prayer meetings to pay tribute to the ‘Father of the Nation’ and his works. It was on January 30, 1948 that Gandhi Ji was assassinated by Nathuram Godse and the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru famously announced that the light had gone out of our lives. While the relevance of Gandhi- his principles and works are debated in many academic circles today, his martyrdom at the hands of bigotry is widely acknowledged and marked all over the world. At IP College, the Gandhi Study Circle organized the meet and at LSR, the Students’ Union, in association with the Indian Music Society and the Department of Sanskrit, marked the day with a special assembly. Kavyayani, the President, Gandhi Study Circle, made a presentation on Gandhi’s philosophy. This was followed by soulful renditions of ‘Ae vatan ke sajeele jawano’ and ‘Raghupati raghav raja ram’ by Alaap- the Indian Music Society. Raghupati raghav raja ram is known to have been one of Gandhi’s favorite hymns. [caption id="attachment_29217" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Gandhi Soulful renditions of ‘Ae vatan ke sajeele jawano’ and ‘Raghupati raghav raja ram’ by students of IP College for Women.[/caption] Pico Iyer’s ‘Eloquent Sound of Silence’ was revisited by the Gandhi Study Circle, General Secretary Narayani; the famous essay is on the importance of silence and how silence is not an absence but a presence where the mind is in the highest place of all. Iyer says that a moment of silence is the highest honour one can pay someone. The gathering at IPCW also observed a moment silence for Colonel Rai who died recently fight militants in Jammu and Kashmir. At LSR, the Martyr’s Day gathering opened with the college prayer and a moment of silent mourning following which students from different religious backgrounds recited prayers from their faiths honouring Gandhi’s commitment to communal harmony. Students from the Department of Sanskrit then recited some shlokas. This was followed by Dhwani- the Indian Music Society singing hymns like ‘Ek Onkar Satnam’ and a Sanskrit adaptation of ‘Ae mere vatan ke logo’. Dr. Maya Joshi from the Department of English was then invited to share her insights into Gandhi and Gandhian philosophy. She quoted from a factual account of the Mahatma’s last days by historian Irfan Habib; Professor Habib has written that Gandhiji insisted that he belonged to both India and Pakistan. Dr. Joshi also quoted the artist Nand Lal Bose on Gandhi’s love for music and how he believed that machines could not reproduce aesthetic qualities that human labour could. The meet ended with the screening of a short video on Gandhi’s life and death, and his famous quotes. A verse from read out from the Islamic scriptures saying that martyrs are living, not dead, encapsulated the essence of the day. Alankrita Anand & Kritika Narula for DU Beat. According to a recent report, the authorities of Delhi University have decided to organize a special screening of the controversial movie ‘Messenger of God’ for students. The movie starring Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji managed to incite protests in the states of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi and forced the state government of Punjab to take the decision of banning the movie. On the grounds that it is necessary to maintain the peace and harmony prevailing in the state, the Government is hell-bent on making the ban permanent.

But as always, DU has decided to take a step further. The controversial movie which gathered so much attention is set to be screened sometime around next week.

“All this hype over the movie hurting religious sentiments is for nothing. The film is clearly getting unwanted attention. If we talk about freedom of expression, this film should definitely get the green light.” said a DU teacher who wished to remain anonymous.

Promoting miracles and use of unbelievable scenes are nothing new as Bollywood has already done it in the past. “We have been looking at illogical scenes and controversial characters for many years. This is no different,” were the words of another faculty member. Such seems to be the present consensus among the authorities.

The students will be shown the special screening and will be required to submit a written review. Based on it they will be evaluated for internal assessment. Students of the university are very excited for the screening!

Each year Delhi University fest season comes in as a carnival, abuzz with delightful events and competitions and attracts thousands from the University. The most awaited of all these events are the star performances and celebrity visits. We bring to you a wishlist of certain celebrities who should visit Delhi University this fest season.

Kapil Sharma- the King of Comedy

He is the most loved comedian and TV host. His knack for humour, wit and sarcasm makes him the best ingredient to spice up the star night at any DU fest.

The dialogues of his show like “Babaji ka thullu” and “Ittu sa” have already made their way into the dictionary of DU students. We sincerely hope he does not give a “thullu” to our fests.

Shahrukh Khan –the Badshaah of Bollywood

The name ‘SRK’ makes every heart sing “Dil Toh Pagal hai” and “Tujhe Dekha toh Yeh Jaana Sanam” with open arms for him. This famous alumnus of Hans Raj College has surprisingly not visited Delhi University yet. He has a humungous female following while boys admire him for his charisma. People love him with passionate insanity in the campus.

Whenever we talk about Hans Raj’s Lovers’ Point, the first thing that comes to our mind is that it is the very same point where Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan (LSR alumnus) nurtured their love. It is almost every DUite’s dream to see him back in the campus. With his upcoming movie ‘Fan’, there are chances of him visiting us for promotions.

Virat Kohli- the bad boy of Indian cricket

A heartthrob of many Delhi University girls, Virat Kohli at 26 has done way more than most of us would do in our entire lifetime. His I-don’t-care attitude is the most attractive thing about him which boys envy and girls adore.

One glimpse of his million-dollar smile & six-packs can make girls of Gargi, LSR, KNC and Miranda House swoon over him. His impeccable fashion sense and amazing moves (even off the pitch) are something that makes him a youth icon.

(Don’t you guys worry, Anushkha Sharma comes complementary too!)
