The Foodie’s Junction at SRCC Crossroads

Much like everything else at SRCC’s Crossroads, the food was in large variety. There was something for every palate and pocket. From Italian to Chinese to Indian Street food, it was hard to find something that was not available.

  • Chole Bhature: although they are easily available at various events, SRCC had a variety of chole bhature from different corners of Delhi. Even small, and highly exclusive, eating places like Om Corner had put up stalls there.
  • Cup Cakes: And not the ones that look like they are here because no one bought them off the shelf at the bakery. The ones that wanna make you eat them even when you’re on a diet.

  • Waffles: When was the last time you ate waffles at any cafe, much less at a fest!
  • Rico’s: If you’re a DU student who happens to pass by north campus at least once every few months, then you know what I’m talking about. Rico served almost all their specialties at the fest and they tasted like fresh from the oven.

  • Banoffe Pie: Yolo 21 served Banoffe pie that’ll make you want buy one more every half hour. And when I told the stall manager that it was as good as the ones they served in posh south Delhi restaurants for five times the price, he happily said that his was better.

Escapades : Adding adventure

With all the stars that rocked the crowds at night, Escapades made sure that the students were entertained through the day. After Papa CJ, Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan, it was time for Raghu Dixit to entertain SRCC. As part of Livewire at Histrionica 2014, The Raghu Dixit performed for the massive crowd that gathered in the SRCC parking lot. The event was open for non SR-ites as well and this meant that people lined up to watch the performance. Despite the delay, the numbers never dwindled and most people would agree with the fact that it was truly worth the wait.

With songs from their latest album Jag Changa as well as some of their all time favorites like Ambar, Khidki, Hey Bhagwan, No man will ever love you like I do and many more, fans were truly in for a treat as they enjoyed the concert.

Histrionica brought some of the biggest names in the Industry over the course of the festival and the performance by The Raghu Dixit Project definitely had everyone on their feet.

Third day’s the charm, right? It so was. Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan made it to Shri Ram College of Commerce on 26th February to promote their upcoming movie Shaadi ke side effects. Keeping the information to themselves until the very day, the Dramatics society of SRCC restricted the entry to SRites only.

After watching the SRCC’s in-house stage production, “Black comedy”, people proceeded to behold their favorite stars and a huge gathering of more than fifteen hundred students was witnessed in the parking area of the college. The event which was scheduled to begin at 1:15, began around 4:00pm, making the crowd wane a little. In order to keep the constant booing of the crowd at bay, the organizers played songs of Honey Singh at full volume making few dance and few giddy.

When the duo arrived at last, the two and hour wait was completely worth it. While Vidya looked refreshing and addressed the crowd with her beautiful smile, Farhan made the crowd specially girls go week in the knees with his deep sensuous voice. They threw out CDs of the movie to the crowd and interacted with them for about ten minutes. Signing off, Farhan recited the poem from “Zindagi na Milegi Doobara” while Vidya waived and thanked the gathering for having them there.

The Sri Ram College of Commerce auditorium was packed to capacity with students lining up to see Papa CJ bring his unique brand of comedy to Delhi University. The performance was the highlight of day two at Histrionica 2014. The International comedy sensation had the audience in splits as Papa CJ didn’t even spare the SRCC principal in his act.

1622439_526109544174410_488444896_o

He didn’t miss out on a single opportunity to roast the students and the faculty of SRCC with digs at the various societies and foundation courses while he not so subtly continued to crack jokes about things like politics and terrorism. In classic Papa CJ style he constantly kept the audience involved as he made them do an exercise to enjoy comedy and mock as many spectators as he possibly could. As he continued to profess his pride to be Indian, he continued to rip American checking at Airports and second generation Indians in Britain a new one.

With all the inside jokes on SRCC about Crossroads, the Dramatics Society, Demeanor and of course the gay boy digs at the Doscos sitting in the audience he made sure that the students did nothing short of falling of their chairs as they laughed through the act.

Want to laugh a little? Here are two cracks from the show!

“The only two types of people who do Yoga are foreigners and first year B.Com students.”

“What the hell is Integrated Mind Body and Heart? In our time we called that Masturbation.”

The Dramatics society of Shri Ram College Commerce (SRCC) is back with its annual fest, Histrionica! The four-day fest kick started on 24th February with the Nukkad Natak – Aahvaan. Despite not being a competitive event, it celebrated the vibrancy and exuberance of street play with great vigor. Around forty five teams participated in the prelims that took place on Sunday, out of which only eight made it through to perform in the finals. Although this year the familiar zest about the fest seemed a tad bit missing, the decoration (including minions) and excitement among the spectators was palpable.

The common call started at 1:30 pm with the entire dramatics society dancing and hooting around the college and singing there theme song “oh-ha”. The event took place at the co-op area and around 150 students surrounded the place to watch the teams perform. Kirori Mal College with its act “Company Raj” began the event. Next in line was Hans Raj College, stunning the audience with its extra ordinary performance, “Rehaayi” meaning freedom. It portrayed the reason why “criminals” commit crime and why they deserve a chance to relive. Khalsa College and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies were no less who presented “We, the people” and “Rajneeti Unplugged” respectively. They stressed that common man is as much a part of politics as anyone else.

SRCC gave a performance full of humor and satire on “Bhram” meaning illusion. Hindu College and Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce (GGSCC) were as good as any of the others. Where Hindu college mocked the education system with its play “Kaisi yeh path shala”, GGS came up with “Chidiya ki Kahani”, stupefying the audience and compelling them to fight away the patriarchal society. IP College for Women was the last one with their play “Mooch neech ka Papada” before the tired yet extremely satisfied audience dispersed and the judges congratulated the teams.

Upcoming events at Histrionica include the stage theatre acts at Charades, along with a comedy night with Papa CJ and a closing act with the Raghu Dixit Project.

The Entrepreneurial Development Cell of Shri Ram College of Commerce held its annual fest, Eximius on the 12th of February. However, the flagship event was the Internship Fair, which was held on Tuesday the 11th of February.

Powered by the ‘10,000 Startups’ program by NASSCOM, the Startup Jobs Fair was presented by Find Your Great Work to promote budding entrepreneurial talents. Over 300 students from various universities and about 15 startup initiatives participated in the event, including well known companies like Zomato and Dineout and others such as Felximoms and Inc42. The day kicked off with representatives from various companies presenting and pitching their startups to the students. The keynote speaker was Siddhartha Sharma, the founder of Success Monks. Being an experienced speaker, his speech touched a chord with every student in the house. He spoke on the topic ‘Passion into Profession’ and talked about how over half the working population hates their job. Encouraging young minds to think beyond the defined norms of employment options, he ended with an amusing story and thought provoking message, “… Are you cutting the tail off of your fish because someone in your family once had a small frying pan?”

An interaction session followed, allowing students to get to know each startup better. The students then sat for GD’s in groups of 10 and the selected candidates subsequently gave interviews of the startups of their choice. The results are yet to be announced.

The annual sports fest of Shri Ram College of Commerce, the Festival of Youth Sport (FOYS) reached its culmination on the 7th of February as 10 different categories of sporting events reached their final stage. A busy last day, SRCC’s field and their sports complex continued to be the hub of activity, with different sports and games being simultaneously played one after the other.

The elaborate event, which boasted of 10 diverse and popular sporting competitions, involved matches which apart from being competitive, also kept the audiences enthralled. The final results saw a few new champions being crowned, while several competitors managed to retain their number one spot. In the outdoor sports category, the hosts-SRCC won the tournaments in Football, Baseball and Ball Badminton (Men’s). Shyamlal Anand College emerged triumphant as the tournament winners in Hockey, while the Ball Badminton (Women’s) category was won by Maitreyi College. In the category of Indoor Sports, a pulsating Basketball final (Men’s) between Kirori Mal College and Shri Ram College of Commerce ended in the latter being crowned champions. The basketball tournament for the women’s group ended in a win for St. Stephen’s College, with the Stephen’s girls picking up a much deserved win. In Chess, the hosts (SRCC) managed a win whereas the finals of Carom resulted in Zakir Hussain College emerging victorious. S.G.T.B. Khalsa College picked up yet another win, this time in Badminton (Boys) with the Khalsa boys beating the home team in the finals. Last but not least, SRCC won the tournament in the group of Table Tennis (Boys), whereas Lady Shri Ram College won the same in the Girls category.

The sports festival, throughout its 4 day-course maintained a sporty ambience within the college, contributing to a general activity and buzz throughout the complex. This, apart from adding to the players energy levels, generated an atmosphere which was probably one of the main attractions of the fest.

Whether it is through the eyes of a random onlooker or a sports enthusiast, FOYS seems to be growing in power as well as in stature with each passing year. A sports summit well worthy of the hype, the amount of effort put into the festival was commendable to say the least. The event seems to have made a conscious attempt towards uniting sports fans from different parts of Delhi University.

Business Conclave 2014, SRCC’s annual undergraduate management festival kicked off with the Sri Ram Memorial Oration on 5th February. Last year the event was the center of attention with Narendra Modi as the keynote speaker. This edition of Conclave saw Honorable Finance Minister Sri P. Chidambaram deliver the opening address to a packed auditorium at the Sri Ram College of Commerce. Whether it was the introduction of the chief guest in Tamil or the crowds cheering for the Union president Seerat Gupta, the oration kept the audience entertained. The issue that was addressed was that of ‘Accelerating India’s Growth’.

He talked about the challenges and opportunities that India faces as a nation. Through the course of his speech he addressed all the problems that plague our country and at the same time illustrated how we have a chance to capitalize on what we have. The idea that he emphasized was that we are the biggest obstacle in our path and that we do not need to look across the border to find the cause behind our failure. The obstacles he addressed were rising inequality, the ‘not in my backyard syndrome’, middle class stagnation and unwillingness to work for the greater good of society. He further talked about competition and how we must all now comply with the global standard.

The Festival of Youth Sport 2014, organised by the Sports Committee of Shri Ram College of Commerce, received a warm reception on its opening day as they welcomed a former Olympic medalist, Mr Vijender Beniwal Singh as Chief Guest for the opening ceremony held on 4th February. He was accompanied by another distinguished sportsperson, Shri Bhanu Sachdeva, a renowned swimmer and an SRCC alumnus.

The opening ceremony of the event, which started at 1 pm, saw the principal of SRCC, Mr P.C. Jain and the head of the Physical Education Department, Mrs. Kuljeet Kaur, welcome the chief guests, expressing their gratitude and appreciation in their speeches, followed by an orderly procession of the oath ceremony wherein 41 colleges from across the nation pledged towards upholding the spirit and values of the game. Subsequently, the chief guests addressed the SRCC crowd, talking about the need to encourage sports in India as well as emphasising on the importance of sports in our everyday lives. This final speech was followed by a host of cultural performances, including dance shows from National Cadet Corps, Deshbandhu College, ILLAS, as well as by SRCC’s very own western-dance society.

Vijender

Following their traditional way of inaugurations, the chief guests for the event, Mr. Vijender Singh and Mr. Sachdeva were encouraged to basket a throw in order to formally commence a start to the Sports fest of 2014.

The only exclusive sports festival in all of Delhi Univerity, the annual event seems to be gaining considerable momentum as well as attention in recent years. This year, apart from hosting 10 different sports, the event also boasts of a flagship event, a Mini Marathon being organized on the 5th of February, 6 am onwards.
