Forbes Asia stated, “Gamezop just closed $350K in seed funding with global investors, making Yashash one of the youngest in Asia to raise institutional investment.” The Delhi-based company aggregates short and addictive games from around the world, which can be played on a single app and removes the friction of constantly installing and uninstalling individual games. Although Android-only at this point, all of the hundreds of games featured on the Gamezop app are device- and OS-agnostic and can be shared as web links for play on any smartphone, tablet, PC, or Smart TV.
Yashash Agarwal has been in the gaming business for two years now. “Content-light platform plays have been most scalable in the digital consumption space. Popular forms of digital entertainment, such as music or videos, already have platforms that serve as one-stop destinations. However, in gaming one only hears of individual titles. We are building a platform to make gaming reach the inflection point that the others have already witnessed,” he said.
Sri Peddu, MD of Powerhouse Ventures has appreciated the careful selection of the target audience. “India isn’t a mature gaming market and most are still non-gamers who haven’t used gaming consoles. Gamezop with its snackable games is a crisp offering and targets those who would use their smartphones as their first gaming device. It’s a segment that is poised to grow and the founders have the requisite product expertise.”
Gamezop has also been selected to represent India this April at the International Business Model Competition at Redmond, co-hosted by Microsoft, Harvard Business School, and Stanford Graduate School of Business. In May, they will travel to Silicon Valley for the global finals of the TiE International Startup Competition.
Upon being asked if being one of the youngest in the country to raise institutional funding was a challenge, Yashash praised the evolving Indian startup ecosystem that no longer demands several years of experience. “Our focus has been to build a robust product that addresses the genuine problems for users and indie game developers alike. A few days ago, The Auburn Umbrella dished out a couple of fashion trends for you all to follow as you participate in DU’s much-talked about ‘Fest Season’. As we visited various campuses to collect fest coverage, we were thrilled with the kind of fashion statements that were made by our stylish student body.
Although the weather over this season has been uncertain, flip-flopping from warm to hot to suddenly nippy, it appears that our trendy DU chicas have already declared summers! We got to see a lot of summery, short dresses, denim shorts and sleeveless shirts. Crop tops from last season are also back! Strappy sandals and leather back-packs on the accessories side were trending items too.
The dapper men chose to dress casually in long shorts, chappals and sporty tees. Western clothing was more frequently seen, with kurtas, Nehru jackets and khadi shirts from last season missing in the scene.
It’s very important to own a balanced wardrobe, i.e a good blend of branded, as well as street fashion and our students certainly know how to strike that equation right! So we saw girls sporting branded jeans with chunky jewellery bought off the street; or street sandals worn with branded skater dresses. In the brand category, the evergreen labels Zara, Promod, Forever 21 and the latest high-street fashion brand to enter Indian markets- H&M were popular choices; whereas flea markets like Janpath and Sarojini Nagar are still the places to shop at when one is on a tight budget.
As far as fashion disasters are concerned, thankfully, there were few that met the eye. People who are still holding on to their woollens and other items from winter were looked upon with contempt. Also, too much bling, too little clothing, excessively high heels and overdone make-up were unanimously regarded as fashion faux pas.

Crossroads’16 – the annual cultural festival of Shri Ram College of Commerce was a grand 4 day affair from 5th to 9th March which saw an amazing lineup of stars, activities and competitions. While the number of competitive events were far less than what we’ve seen in other college festivals this season, SRCC exceeded expectations when it came to star performances, with actor and director Farhan Akhtar with his music ensemble ‘Farhan Live’ performing on Day 1, music-composer trio Shankar Ehsan Loy performing on Day 2, Indian band Euphoria performing on Day 3 and finally Bollywood Singer Mohit Chauhan ending the fest with his performance on Day 4.
Here are the main highlights of Crossroads’16
Day 1: Farhan Akhtar Live and Asmita Theatre Group
Day 1 began with the setting of the stage and sound testing for Farhan Akhtar’s performance later at night. Asmita Theatre group began the performance of their production ‘Dastak’ based on atrocities against women.

Despite a brief spell of rain, the performance by Farhan Akhtar Live started in the evening without interruptions. Farhan along with his music ensemble performed various songs like ‘Socha Hai’ ‘Khwabon Ke Parindey’ ‘Rock On’ and ‘Mai Aisa Kyu Hu’
Shankar Ehsan Loy started their performance in the evening. Shankar Mahadevan, the lead singer was in awe with the audience and expressed his gratitude to be performing in SRCC twice in four years.
The music-composer trio proceeded to perform their hit numbers ‘Breathless’ ‘Hindustani’ ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’
Day 3: Choreography, Fashion Competitions and Euphoria
Day 3 of Crossroads started early with Verve, the choreography society of SRCC organizing the choreography competition ‘Requs’ on the mainstage. Hindu College’s Srijya emerged as the winners of the competition while Hansraj College’s Terpsichorean were declared the runner ups.

The event was quickly followed by the fashion walk competition organized by Demeanor, the fashion society of SRCC. The results are currently awaited.
As the fashion competition ended, sound check started at the mainstage for Euphoria’s performance. The band entered in their iconic outfits. Palash Sen, the lead singer of the band was ecstatic to see the crowd and expressed his love for playing for students. He also emphasized his likeness of the audience’s knowledge of non-Bollywood music.
The band proceeded to perform on their hit compositions ‘Dhoom’ ‘Mairee’ and ‘Meri Gali’. They also played renditions of various Bollywood music numbers.
The fourth and final day of Crossroads started with the Western dance competition organized by Panache, SRCC’s Western dance society. The competition was judged by Sahil Aneja, founder of Brooklyn Academy. Misba from Shri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce emerged as the winners while Tanz, Miranda House and Afroza, Indraprastha College for Women shared the second position.

Later in the evening, Bollywood Singer Mohit Chauhan graced the stage with his performance of various songs like ‘Tumse Hi’ ‘Pee Loon’ ‘Jo Bhi Main’ ‘Saada Haq’ and more. Though at the last few minutes of performance, the crowd went a little out of control and people were caught up in horde as Mohit Chauhan made an exit.
The much awaited Performing Arts Festival of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Histrionica 2016, got off to a spectacular start with Mr. Manoj Bajpayee and Mr. Rajkumar Rao coming down for the promotion of their new movie ‘Aligarh’ along with the director, Mr. Hansal Mehta.

The entire auditorium bustled with a full house and eagerly listened to them as they shattered the wall of Section 377 brick by brick. The movie ‘Aligarh’ revolves around a professor who prefers to share his bed with a man instead. ‘Is this such a heinous crime?’ the movie questions the entire Indian mentality. The session reached its peak as Mr. Mehta went on about the Censor Board and its illegitimate decisions with respect to A-Rated scenes. “The Censor Board needs sex” said Mr. Mehta as the audience erupted with laughter. The session, being a highly interactive one, then moved on to the further questions being posed by the audience to the celebrities, be it dialogue recitals or their views on sensitive issues. A highlight worthy of mention was when Mr. Manoj Baypayee enticed the audience with his dialogues from Gangs of Wasseypur and Mr. Rajkumar Rao spoke about his secondary role in Queen.
As the clock struck 1:30, the stick first struck the dafli, marking the beginning of the Street Play Event-Aahvaan.
The common call, being the most awaited part of the day then began as the entire college gathered at the Co-op and watched the Dram-Soccers form a huddle in excitement to dance their life out, in pure bliss. The campus echoed with “Aao Aao, Naatak Dekho” and the daflis continued to play as they marched around the campus, making every soul in college shake a limb. The various selected street play teams then went on to perform and were judged by the renowned Atul Satya Kaushik, the lyricist of the all-too-famous SRCC call song-‘Oha’ and Satyendra Malik, an SR Alumni
The street play team of The Dramatics Society of SRCC made its first home performance as they presented their play “The Defective Ward” which brought many to tears. The event ended with valuable and critical feedback provided by the judges and all the teams returned as winners.
The second day commenced with the stage all set and auditorium filled with theatre lovers for Histrionica’s stage play event-Charades. To begin with we had the team from Ramjas college showcasing their talent in their annual stage play production ‘Deluxe Hair Cutting Salon’ ,followed by a thought provoking monologue ‘Shakkar ke Paanch Daane’ presented by the team from Shaheed Bhagat Singh (evening) College. The annual production of Shivaji College ‘Jeevita Chellave’ beautifully wrapped up the first day of Charades leaving the audience awe-inspired and eager for more.
To make the day even more blissful we had Mr. Randeep Hooda gracing the occasion with his presence in the celebrity interactive session. The event started off on a humorous note where Mr. Hooda joked about his surprise and disappointment at not turning up in Miranda House, for that was the impression he was under all the while. The actor went on to talk about a wide variety of topics- from the ‘great performance’ of MP’s in the parliament and the ongoing Jat Stir to how he got his first role. He had the audience in fits of laughter when he openly discussed his weirdest fan experiences wherein a lot many girls had expressed their desire to be kidnapped by ‘Mahabir Bhati’.

From discussing burning issues with a light hearted approach to explaining how finding a job was the hardest task for an actor, the actor’s charisma kept the audience mesmerized.
Right after the session ended , a group of young theatre aspirants from various colleges had a short personal workshop with Mr. Hooda.
The third day of Histrionica commenced with an enthusiastic audience that packed the auditorium to witness the fist event for the day; Charades. The first play was Veronica’s Room, a production by Sri Venkateshwara College, followed by Party; a play by Hansraj College.
Our home production Blithe Spirit was cheered on by a house full in the auditorium. The play was greatly praised for its key elements of humour and the mysterious atmosphere of the supernatural that it created. The closing play was Characters Revolt. A play presented by Hindu College.
Later, Mr Piyush Mishra interacted and sang to the audience in The Stage. The event started off with Mr Mishra telling about the struggles he’s faced during his transition from theatre to Bollywood. It was followed by a question on his version of ‘ishq’ to which Mr Mishra recited shers from his own book titled ‘Kuch Ishq Kiya Kuch Kaam Kiya’. He then sang his famous songs – Husana, Duniya, Aarambh and Ik bagal on popular demand from the audience.
The last event of the day was Live Wire where the immensely talented Mr Nikhil D’souza performed his various songs. The parking lot was full with students and music lovers who cheered, swayed and danced until the day ended.
The English Literary Society of Shri Ram College Of Commerce, will be conducting its three day annual literary festival Zephyr, under the theme ‘Utopia, from 22nd to 24th February respectively. The first day of this lit fest witnessed substantial participation from different colleges across Delhi University and provided platform for those seeking to apply their creativity diverse forms of literature.
The day started with the first event- Timepan, a creative writing competition, yet with a twist of strategy building and bidding. One had to bear in mind the cost of time to write a piece of fiction (both poetry and prose). It was followed by another event- Newsroom 2.0, a blend of drama a false news reporting and was subsequently judged by the Bazinga team of DU Beat. The teams were given with a fictional headline (like Rahul Gandhi invites Sunny Leone to Congress) and were required to enact this piece of information for ten minutes in the most ingenious way possible. First position was secured by Yashasvi Tak, Bhartendu Verma, Ishita Kishore, Vasu and Avikal Parashari from SRCC for their performance on the topic ‘KRK goes to Hollywood’.

After the events came the most awaited speaker session. Durjoy Dutta, an Indian novelist, screenwriter and entrepreneur, famous for works such as ‘Of Course I Love You’, ‘She Broke Up, I Didn’t!’, ‘Hold My Hand’ and other notable titles, addressed the crowd and bagged their support and appreciation, by his modesty and compassion. He talked about his journey towards fulfilling his dream of becoming a writer, on how he had to quit his job and after sheer hardwork and support from his family, finally found success. He confessed that in his initial few releases, he wrote about his ex-girlfriend, who happens to be an alumnus of SRCC. On being asked in a Q&A round, he revealed that he hasn’t really tried his hand on Thriller but will surely be working on it in coming years.
The day ended with the second keynote speaker of the day, Ravinder Singh, bestselling author of ‘I Too Had A Love Story’ and ‘Can Love Happen Twice?’. He shared his experiences, answered questions by his fans and also motivated the students to pursue their dreams. “Organising a literary festival in a college is a new experience altogether, as it requires a new perspective and focusing on new concepts. Moreover, the ELS team has put in tremendous efforts this year to make it a success and I’m proud to be a part of such a dedicated team.” said Archita Mittal, Public Relations Head of ELS, SRCC.
The SRCC Business Conclave, India’s largest management fest, concluded on 5th of February after 3 days of extravaganza. The festival aims to broaden the horizons of the youth by engaging them in a series of intellectually stimulating speaker sessions concerning issues that act as the orbit around which modern business rotates. In sync with previous years, the core theme for this year’s sessions was “In touch with tomorrow.” The three days witnessed a host of eminent personalities from a variety of fields engaging youth in interactive sessions.
The first day, 3rd February, began with a panel discussion on the theme ‘Startup Culture in India.’ The panellists included Ankit Bhatt from MapMyIndia, Kashyap Deorah, author of the book ‘Golden-Trap’, Rajesh Gupta from Fresh Falsabzi, Ankur Warikoo from Nearbuy and Saurabh Kochhar from FoodPanda, where they discussed the opportunities and challenges to startups in India. Next came the much awaited session with Nirmala Sitharaman, moderated by Rajdeep Sardesai. Mr. Sardesai in one of the questions asked her, “…two wasted Parliament sessions, the monsoon washed out and the winter froze. No legislation for GST. Politicians still put their personal interests forth?” to which, the lady of the hour said, “The hitch is not with NDA. If they let us pass the bill we will sit together to have lunch with them (other parties).” The events were followed by a Gala Night where Dhruv Vishwanathan entertained the audience with his mesmerizing guitar chords.
4th February began with the Shri Ram Memorial speech by Mr. Nitin Gadkari where he emphasised the role of youth in nation building is fundamental. He said, “Conversion of wealth into knowledge is called progress.” When asked about the nature of politicians he said that only the ideation of good people in the politics can result in growth. The next speaker, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal sharing the stories of his struggle and success said, “In a small garage in Ludhiana, me and my team put together the first ‘push-button’ phone of India. Then came Mr. D. Shivakumar, CEO PepsiCo India, who shed light on the strength of Indian youth saying, “What youth has today, is voice.” The next on the dias was Derek-O-Brien, who we all know as the Bournavita Quizmaster. Currently a Member of Parliament he said, “Politician bashing is very easy. There are always jokers in a pack. But the Parliament is also full of some serious talent.” The final speaker of the day was Medha Patkar, activist for Narmada Bachao Andolan and she highlighted the importance of Human resource saying, “Money alone cannot give you the suit on your body, the paper we use and even the currency notes.”
The first speaker for the final day was G.M.Rao, Chairman GMR Group. Revisiting his early days and all the obstacles he faced, he said, “There was a time when I started 28 different businesses at the same time. I was grabbing whatever opportunity I was getting.” The next to come was Mr. Adi Godrej from Godrej Group who spoke about how fundamental is enforced legislation to the growth of a country but how too many rules and regulations can often slow down the process. Rajat Sharma, took over the stage who interacted in a light manner with the students. About his journey with IndiaTV, he recounted, “Sapna profit banane ya BMW mei aane ka nahi tha. Sapna sirf logo ka pyaar or dil jeetne ka tha.”
This year, the Business Conclave went International, calling David Plouffe, Former Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama. He attracted a lot of questions and curiosity, expressing opinion about India, the elections in the United States and even Donald Trump. After him came, Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Finance, who said, “The most important duty of a finance executive is Honesty.” The next to come was Anurag Thakur, MP and Secretary, BCCI, and he said, “Cricket, and sports give you the knowledge which classroom doesn’t offer. Sports is a way of life that helps in character building.”
The guest speaker for the final day was Suresh Raina, when audience asked him if he was a front or back bencher in school, he laughed and said, “Main class mei bethta hi nahi tha.” The event was wrapped up with the much awaited guest, Mr. Rishi Kapoor. As he is famous on twitter for his witty, straight forward personality, his answers at the event too matched his charisma. When asked about Bollywood, he said, “The business of cinema is huge. The only entertainment after cinema is sex.”
Not everybody has the gift of art, and of those who do, not all are lucky enough to get their share of fame and recognition. This is where iOTA enters the frame. iOTA is a platform linking specially-abled artists to their prospective buyers.
Conceptualised by Megha, Preena, Pranidhi and Prateek, this is an endeavour promoting the art of differently abled artists with brilliant skills. As they rightly believe in ‘Canvassing Lives’, their motto, this group of young enthusiastic undergraduates from SRCC, Delhi University and IIT Mandi step in to redefine the lives of thousands of such artists by channelising their talent towards the deserved platform.
iOTA is entering the market by holding India’s first crowd -funded Exhibition for differently abled artists. For the same, they are putting up their campaign on the crowd funding platform ‘Desired Wings’ to raise funds for their maiden themed exhibition to be followed by theme based art exhibitions in multiple cities. iOTA is also developing an online bidding platform for artworks to remove the international barriers and attract art lovers from all over the world.
The artists that they have on board are from various sections of society, longing for the appropriate bargain for their artwork along with a respectable name. Here’s a small introduction of a few artists they have, besides others.
Sheela Sharma: Paints the world right with her left foot; her work defines empathy, love, bonding amongst others.
Shreekant Dubey: A renowned artist, he always carries the go-getter instinct and has his unique way of painting.
CV Surendran: Hails from Kerala, he paints with ball point pens and doesn’t let his paralyzed body affect his soul.
Amita Dutta: She suffers from bilateral hearing loss. Her style of coffee painting is one of its kind.
Vipul Mittal: An offbeat artist. Mute lips and silence is his world, but his art speaks a lot.
Shivraj Singh: A veteran artist, his well-crafted sculptures make up for his cramped legs.
Neelesh Ganesh: A 23 year old autistic kid, who paints music and god in his work.
Their crowd funding campaign will go live on www.desiredwings.com/iota on 1st February 2015 and the money will be used to organise their first exhibition.
“Some leaders made a mockery of the whole election process”: Akash Mehta, Students Union President, SRCC
“For a rank doesn’t confer just power, it imposes responsibility as well”
The SRCC Union President, Akash Mehta, currently in his third year of Economics Honours hails from a small town in Haryana and is an alumnus of DPS RK Puram. While in a conversation with DU Beat, he speaks of his experiences, the challenges and future endeavours for the college, being at the helm of things going in and out.
How has the first semester been for you?
We introduced the Regional Sensitization Cell and PWD canteen enclosure to ensure a level playing field for all. A session with H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was organised along with a Cleanliness Drive on 2nd of October in sync with the Swachh Bharat Program. A Freshers’ Party was organised with The Progressive Brothers and DJ Harsha. We plan on introducing Yoga to ensure overall development of students.
With your nomination being finalised just a few days before the voting day, how difficult was it to reach out to all the students in such a short span of time?
It is surely difficult to meet 2500 students in all, but life has taught me that if you have honest and clear intentions, nobody can stop you. Undoubtedly it was an arduous task, but with the support of my family and tireless efforts of my team, I could manage my campaign.
With the constant tiff between the hostel and day scholars, how do you plan to strike a balance between the two?
For me each student of SRCC is equal and fair in my judgement. I am the biggest testimony of this fact as in spite of not being a hosteller, I was able to gather all of their support. I shall strive to work for them all alike.
How is your vision for the college different from that of past Presidents of SRCC?
All the previous Presidents worked to their full capacity to make Crossroads what it is today. I have my own style of working though and as a President, alongside working for the fest I should be amongst the students more and get closer to their problems and find solutions.
What is your strategy for handling this fest season?
It has been going well with my team since we started our term. Our focus is to make our two major events bigger and better.
With all the allegations and rumours, are elections becoming a dirty affair and is there any escape from it? What is your take?
It is quite dirty in my opinion. I think some student leaders have made a mockery of the whole electoral campaign. They should understand the morals and ethics before entering this field. There’s an escape once we start realising the true essence of fair politics.
How do you like the tag of a ‘Cool and Charming President’ that you’ve been adorned with?
(laughs) I really don’t know a perfect response to it, but it’s really flattering. To be honest, I am pretty shy around girls, but it feels good to be conferred upon with this title!
It’s not very usual to see a crowd of over two thousand students rising up in unison to applaud to the simplicity of one man.
Today at SRCC, the CEO of Google, Mr. Sundararajan Pichai addressed a gathering of students from schools, college-goers and corporates. The man of the hour, Mr. Pichai was greeted with enthralling energy and enthusiasm. The event was hosted by the renowned commentator, Harsha Bhogle.
Mr. Bhogle introduced the CEO by calling the ‘Techies as the Rockstars of the new age’. They started off by talking about his early days in the not-so-fancy hostel room of IIT Kharagpur and how difficult it was to stay connected with the world in the pre-Internet era. Talking about the work space in Google, Mr. Pichai recounted that back in 2004 he felt like ‘a kid in a candy store’ with so much going around him. He also said Google is more of a balanced space where work essentially meets fun. “Everyone out here wants to be you Sundar”, said Harsha. To which Mr. Sundar said, “One must do something they’re excited by. We all have many opportunities to reinvent ourselves, and we should keep on trying. In silicon valley, people start their own companies and even if they fail, they wear it as a badge of honour.” He emphasised the importance of taking risk!
He also said that he’s an ardent fan of football and follows Barcelona every now and then. His favourite player is Messi (which did upset the Ronaldo fans!). While he was young he would wake up in the middle of the night to watch matches, driving his mom crazy. The students got a chance to ask questions from Mr. Pichai too. One of the girls asked if he ever felt incompetent working with the more talented people of the company. To which he humbly said that it’s always great to work with people who know better than you because insecurity pushes you forward in life.
When asked about how his vision for Google is different from that of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, he replied that they all share a lot in common. Google has given flight to a lot of things and he wishes to make technology the one stop solution to every problem. He also said that India is an amazingly vast land where trends of future emerge and they are now investing a lot more here than before.
A video question came asking him why Android version names are not named after Indian desserts, to which he laughingly said that they’ll keep that in mind next time they launch another version. The session ended with a rapid fire round where Harsha asked Pichai about his 12th standard percentage. The CEO said in a witty manner that it wasn’t enough to get him into SRCC.
Before the arrival of Mr. Pichai, there was a performance by the drummers group D’Frens who made the whole audience play their drums in the Mexican wave fashion with their infectious energy. Another band of six vocalists from Mumbai, Raga Tripping entertained the audience by producing music without any instruments.
All and all the event was on a hugely grand scale with Google being the perfect host. The Starwars headsets goodies for all left the audience a bit too happy.
The man behind the topest-notch corporate Google Inc. Sundar Pichai is all set to visit India next week. The CEO along with meeting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will also give an appearance at SRCC. The college gears up to welcome Mr.Pichai on 17th December. The session at SRCC will be an interactive one where they’re inviting students to “Ask Sundar”. The floor will be open for questions where they can ask Mr.Pichai anything they want him to answer.
The Chennai-born executive is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. He joined Google in 2004 and worked as the Product Chief before taking over as the CEO. Mr.Pichai is also acclaimed to be associated to various software products like Chrome OS and Google Drive. This is his first arrival to the country since he took over as the CEO of Google.
Watching the man himself, Sundar Pichai, an inspiration to millions, the audience would definitely be enthralled by his presence. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch him live in action.

Yashash Agarwal has been in the gaming business for two years now. “Content-light platform plays have been most scalable in the digital consumption space. Popular forms of digital entertainment, such as music or videos, already have platforms that serve as one-stop destinations. However, in gaming one only hears of individual titles. We are building a platform to make gaming reach the inflection point that the others have already witnessed,” he said.
Sri Peddu, MD of Powerhouse Ventures has appreciated the careful selection of the target audience. “India isn’t a mature gaming market and most are still non-gamers who haven’t used gaming consoles. Gamezop with its snackable games is a crisp offering and targets those who would use their smartphones as their first gaming device. It’s a segment that is poised to grow and the founders have the requisite product expertise.”
Gamezop has also been selected to represent India this April at the International Business Model Competition at Redmond, co-hosted by Microsoft, Harvard Business School, and Stanford Graduate School of Business. In May, they will travel to Silicon Valley for the global finals of the TiE International Startup Competition.
Upon being asked if being one of the youngest in the country to raise institutional funding was a challenge, Yashash praised the evolving Indian startup ecosystem that no longer demands several years of experience. “Our focus has been to build a robust product that addresses the genuine problems for users and indie game developers alike. The early results are fabulous and we are glad to be backed by veterans who prioritized that over everything else.”
