Startup Fair organised by Entrepreneurship Cell, JMC

Entrepreneurship Cell, Jesus and Mary College (JMC) organised a startup fair named ‘Start-o-sphere’ with a view to provide a platform to the JMC students and alumni who have established their own startups recently. The fair was attended by almost 500 people from various colleges.

Hosting a plethora of activities, the event gave opportunities to the young startup owners to interact with the audience while marketing and selling their respective products. The event consisted of 15 stalls of cupcakes, nachos, drinks, party merchandise and decor items, clutches, notebooks, jewelry etc.

The alumni who were a part of this fair included Gouri Gosain, owner of Rom, Devika Khanna, owner of Cardelicious, Megha Chhabra seller of Customized stationery and posters, Ritika Nangia owner of Fun-Cart and Rashi, owner of ‘A bit of Me’ Jewellery brand.

When asked about the event, Gouri Gosain, An alumni of JMC who had put up a stall to showcase her brand said,”I am grateful to ECell JMC for providing me with this unique opportunity of marketing my startup ‘Rom’. It feels utter nostalgic to be back to this campus and I am glad to see such innovative ideas and plans that have been introduced to this college.”

While the food stalls witnessed the maximum attraction, the audience also seemed mesmerized with the creative stalls.

Acknowledging this initiative, Chavi Malhotra, a second year student of JMC said, “It’s great to see such a lively atmosphere in college. It’s a proud moment for me to see my friend displaying and selling her creative items.”

The convener Dr Meenakshi, praised the tireless efforts of the whole team in organising the event for the first time ever in JMC.

Team from St. Stephen’s and Ramjas wins big at Comquest 2015 at Jesus and Mary College

The Commerce department of Jesus and Mary College (JMC) and Curiosus, the English Quiz Society of JMC in collaboration with Jagganath Institute of Management Studies, Kalkaji (JIMS) organised the Annual Business Management Quiz – Comquest 2015 on the 23rd of September. With Quiz Craft Global as their knowledge partners, the event had Mr. Adittya Nath Mubayi as the Quiz Master.

Participation in teams of one or two, from both Graduate and Post Graduate students was allowed. The quiz was attended by 300 teams. Among the eminent faculty, Chairperson, Director General and Director of JIMS were present, along with the Quiz Coordinators of both the colleges. The event began with the Welcome address by the principal, Sr. Marina John. A keynote address by the Chairperson, Dr. Amit Gupta followed.

The quiz consisted of two rounds, 300 teams took part in the elimination round, consisting of 25 business oriented questions. Out of 300, only 6 teams that managed to correctly recognise the most number of logos and brands correctly and answer the MCQs were selected for the final quiz round. The final round was divided into 6 levels that included clue based points system. The winning team consisted of Apratim Chandra Singh from St. Stephens College and Tushar Anand from Ramjas College. Sreshth Shah and Abhimanyu Bhadauria from Amity University came second whereas the third prize went to Mukul Marodia from Ashoka University and Viraj Morabia from Mithibai College, Mumbai.

The other three qualifying teams consisted of Samridh Kudesia from Ashoka University and Pranshu Agarwal from Acharya Narendra Dev College, Ashhad Qasmi from Keshav Mahavidyalaya and Shiv Shanker Gaurav from Amity University, Anurag Gupta from Indian School of Business and Finance and Tanmay Garg from Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce.

The winning teams received a cash prize of Rs 20,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. The prize was presented by Dr Satish Seth, Director General and JK Batra, Director of JIMS Kalkaji. Comquest 2015 ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Preeti Singh of JIMS.

Then, an interactive Campus to Corporate session by the alumni took place. Lastly, an innovative presentation on ‘Real time application of mathematics’ was displayed to the students. Street Play And Workshop On Safety Issues Organised In JMC

th, “Mashgool”, the drama society of Symbiosis Law School Noida in collaboration with the Legal Aid Centre, organised a street play in Jesus and Mary College (JMC) on “Victimisation in Dating Abuse: Tale of Three Consensual Victims”. The fifteen-minute play created legal awareness among students about their indulgence into physical relationships too early in their lives. The play depicted a story of three girls who entered relationships and eventually became victims of rape and cheating. The court scene at the end of the play made them aware that a victim who had entered the physical relationship with consent has no rights to seek legal remedy. Through three different examples signifying rape, deception and threat, the play threw light upon on the implications one may face while entering into an immature physical relationship. [caption id="attachment_34879" align="aligncenter" width="428"] NSS JMC organised a workshop in collaboration with NGO HopeInU[/caption] On the same day, NSS JMC in collaboration with NGO HopeInU Foundation organised a workshop by the speakers Smriti Easwaran and Dwaipayan Majumder. The workshop, as a part of its new campaign in association with a Switzerland-based company, CrowdGuard, was about “Bystander Activation”. Through videos and interactive activities, the students were educated about the cause, effects and implications of being bystanders along with methods to break the prevalent practice. The speakers elaborated on the answers of how or when to de-escalate, intervene and stay safe. The students were then encouraged to give their support and join the mobile supported crowdgaurd movement to make Delhi a safer place to live in. HopeInU, being one of India’s women-centric organisations has been working for the betterment of young woman, with a special focus on Delhi University. JMC celebrates its first ever Onam, ends event by distributing Payasam

Jesus and Mary College celebrated Onam, the festival of Kerala for the first time on 10th September. The student organisers and volunteers adorned traditional white Kanjivaram sarrees keeping in line with the festive spirits of Onam as it signifies home coming of King Mahabali and also the harvest season in Kerala. One of the students dressed as King Mahabali in a dhoti commenced the programme by welcoming the Principal and teachers, followed by the singing of traditional Onam songs by first year students. The event then progressed on with energetic dance performances of Thiruvadhira by second year students and Rockaankuthu by third year students.

Mr. Jobin Thomas, a teacher from the English department at JMC then delivered a short speech in Malayalam followed by a small act by the mythical King Mahabali, which was met with a heavy applause from the crowd. Approaching the end, President of the college union, Asha delivered a vote of thanks to the Principal and audience and also to her team and participants who helped to make the event a success. Oshia Fen Raju, one of the anchors of the event happily reported, “As Onam was celebrated for the first time in our college people were excited and thrilled about it. And it’s a very proud moment for me and Asha as the program was a grand success!”

Finally, the event came to a close with distribution of the ritualistic Payasam, a desert from Kerala, in the college and holding the festive spirits high.

Priyanka Gandhi

Daughter of former Prime Minister, late Rajiv Gandhi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka is a well known face in the field of politics. She pursued her graduation in Psychology from Jesus and Mary College. In the general elections of 2004, she became the campaign manager of Sonia Gandhi. Known for her quiet organizational and level headed skills, she has managed to prove herself by getting Congress seats in the Amethi Rae Bareilly region during 2007 assembly elections. She is still remembered by senior teachers in the college as having a security team following her everywhere, that she managed to slip past a few times!

Neha Dhupia

Neha Dhupia is a renowned model and Bollywood actress. A History graduate from Jesus and Mary College, she started her career as a TV actress. In 2002, she was crowned Miss India. Subsequently, she participated in the Miss Universe 2002 pageant in Puerto Rico where she made it to the top 10. She has played major roles in movies like Singh Is Kinng (2008) and Dasvidaniya (2008).

Ambika Anand

Ambika Anand is an Indian TV anchor and the Editor in Chief, Fashion at NDTV Good Times, the lifestyle channel of NDTV. She currently hosts Get the Look, Band Baajaa Bride Season 4 and has previously anchored shows like The Big Fat Indian Wedding, I’m Too Sexy For My Shoes etc. She was awarded the Cosmopolitan India Fun Fearless Female TV Personality title in 2011. She was also on the list of HT City Delhi’s Most Stylish 2013.

Sushmita Mukherjee

Sushmita Mukherjee is a senior Bollywood and television actress. She is known for her work in Bollywood movies like Dostana (2008), Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) and King Uncle (1993), etc. Born in Kolkata, She was famous for portraying the role of ‘Kitty’ the half wit assistant of Karam Chand.

Hasleen Kaur

Hasleen Kaur is an Indian Model. She was crowned Miss India Earth and eventually participated in the Miss Earth pageant in 2011. She appeared in several advertisements before making her Bollywood debut in the 2014 movie Karle Pyar Karle. After graduating in English from Jesus and Mary College, she went to Indian Institute of Mass Communication to pursue Advertisement and PR. She also worked as an Elite Model and appeared in Elite Fashion Calendar in 2011.

JMC retains add-on media courses for students of all colleges

Jesus and Mary College (JMC), in collaboration with RK Films and Media Academy (RKFMA), has introduced two new add-on courses in the field of media for the academic year 2015.

Students of JMC as well of other colleges pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies can apply for these courses. To ensure convenience for all students, the classes will be held after regular college hours.

The courses available are Media Studies, Advertising & Media Communication and Camera & Photography. The fee for each course is Rs.15,000 and the duration will be 6 months.

“We acknowledge the overwhelming responses of the student who completed the Media Studies add-on course last year in 2014. This year, the MoU has been renewed for two additional courses and we anticipate greater participation from the student community. The trainers engaged for the courses are all practicing professionals. This will certainly help a student in gaining relevant industry knowledge hands-on and that too at a very affordable fee,” says Deepak Bansal, Director of RKFMA.

The certification shall be done at the end of the respective courses jointly by JMC and RKFMA. The first phase of admissions will conclude on 14th August. Classes are expected to commence after 15th August.

Over 300 participate in JMC’s first MUN

With “Where I is the change” as its motto, Jesus and Mary College hosted its very first MUN on the 24^th and 25^th. The maiden edition of the event turned out to be very well received, with over 300 participants from a number of colleges.

The conference, which was spearheaded by a team of seasoned MUNers, displayed an impeccable level of debate and decorum and encompassed five committees. The United Nations General Assembly – Plenary discussed ballistic missile proliferation with a special emphasis on the Hague code of Conduct, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the United Nations Security Council had their agendas as ‘Capital Punishments and the Implementation of Safeguards Guaranteeing Protection of the Rights of those Facing Death Penalty’ and ‘Militarization of the Arctic’ as their agendas respectively. But the inclusion of World Trade Organization and Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs set JMCMUN’14 apart. The WTO focused on International Product Dumping Practices and the latter reviewed the legal provisions pertaining to sexual assault in the aftermath of the Delhi rape case.

The executive board saw reputed MUN personalities Arindam Som, G.S. Chaitanya, Hisham A. Rizvi, Abhinav Verma and Akriti Bhatia leading their committees with Manisha Massey presiding as the Secretary General and Geetika Nagpal as the Deputy Secretary General. The International Press did exceptional work under the guidance of Pallav Kumar Singh and Tejinder Pal Singh as the head of Photography.

The delegates were seen enjoying the food and an option of dressing in Indian formals was also given in the spirit of Republic Day. The event ended on a high with Sankalp Sharma, Sasha, Part Gauri, Animesh Mohan and Rohan Joshi winning the top accolades in their respective councils and the team from Lady Shri Ram College receiving the trophy for the best delegation. Brij Pahwa, who was part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs said, “JMC gave what was expected from it. The conference was of an optimum level and everything was pretty well organized. A good level of orators and an experienced executive board was the cherry on the cake.”

Economics admissions fiasco at Gargi and JMC

Unlike other Delhi University colleges that kept their first cut-off high in order to avoid over admissions, Gargi College had its cut-off for Economics at 93%, while the average cut-off for Economics was fixed at 97%. Gargi, which previously offered BBE (Bachelor in Business Economics) as a course, is offering Economics Honours as a discipline for the first time. The college was over flooded with students aspiring admission for the course. There was shortage of forms and students were provided with tokens instead. It had an intake which was approximately five times more than the sanctioned strength.

While many colleges are still admitting students, there are some colleges that closed admissions after the first cut-off. Gargi also put a stop to its intake process for almost all courses except History, Sanskrit, Botany and Mathematics. Economics is available in 42 colleges in the campus and most of them came out with a second cut-out. Gargi however, closed admissions just after the first cut-off admitting over 200 students against the approved intake of 40 students.

“According to the University policy and guidelines, its not the first come first serve basis for admissions, no one can deny admissions if a student is eligible for a course provided he/she comes within the time specified”, a lecturer from the college said. “When there are over admissions for a course, we increase the number of sections for the same so that the students and the lecturers do not face problems at the end.” the lecturer added.

Generally, at the most departments have two sections in a batch. With such a huge number, the batch might now be divided in to something around four to five sections. Space crunch, limited faculty and overall limited resources are some of the problems that such a situation could result in. When questioned with regard to the same, we got the response that the college is fully equipped to handle the situation and no college would take admissions otherwise.

Jesus and Mary College reportedly had their own admission fiasco going on. On 3^rd July hundreds of students turned up at JMC to try their luck at getting admitted even though they did not satisfy the cut off. Apparently lots of girls withdrew their admission from JMC’s economics course after the second cut off as they qualified for other courses. So JMC offered the jackpot, admission on first come first serve basis however it was not a formal announcement. Indecently more than a few people heard about it and there was a huge admission rush on the 3^rd.

“I had called the office yesterday and they confirmed the rumour. But today they did not admit anyone below 95% because of the large number of students scored 95%.”said a disappointed DU aspirant, Varsha. Even though the official cut off declared was 96.5%, students were admitted at 95%.

Colleges are confused and unable to handle the number of aspirants. Some are overloaded while others are adopting under the table method to admit students. Literati ’13 – The Latest Edition of JMC’s Literary Festival

Jesus and Mary College hosted their annual literary festival, Literati, on the 12^th of February. The competitions on the day varied from those focusing on a literary background, to those that demanded a sense of art. Some others were based on performance, while yet others seemed to be a challenge to one’s wit. The day’s action began early, right at 9 a.m., rather unconventionally at that. With Pictionary, Creative Writing, Humorous Poem Recitation, Book-cover Designing and Comic Strip Making all running parallel, participants were forced to go for what most interested or them or otherwise, be as good as possible to multitask, albeit without Hermione Granger’s Time Turner. Each of these events witnessed a decent turnout with regard to number of participants and was conducted smoothly, without much delay, as is usually experienced at fests. The drama society performed two acts during a break from competitions; the first being Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, followed by a musical based on Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market. Other competitions on the day were Turncoat Debate. The event was concluded with an entertaining Ad-Mad contest which saw active participation from various colleges, even as the teachers took the day off of pedagogics to enjoy the same as a part of the audience which thronged the venue. There was however a seeming lack of events and competitions pertaining to the literary field, as no paper-presentations or panel discussions were on the itinerary. The conspicuous absence of a lit-quiz too was a point that went into the wrong end of the score-sheet for the event in general.]]>
