The students of Delhi University have observed multiple discrepancies during the Semester-End Examinations causing various issues. Read further for more details.

On 4th December, students of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (SBSC) writing the GE History paper for the first semester received a question paper that was out of syllabus, raising a huge concern among them all.

“We had our GE History Paper yesterday Delhi Through the Ages. Our syllabus for this year was changed. But, our particular class has got a separate paper than that of others, i.e, of the previous syllabus. Other classes have got the new paper, we got the old one. Even after we told our teacher, he denied it. We’ll get zero marks if the person checking our answer sheet doesn’t get the paper, as we had different question papers from others,” said a student writing the exam. The student further provided that they had contacted the Principal who further directed a letter to the concerned authorities. Hopefully, corrective measures will be taken soon.

Further, on the 5th of December, students from Ramanujan College giving their 5th-semester exams for B.A (Prog) E.S.B ( Entrepreneurship and Small Business) had been given a paper which was completely out of the syllabus taught to them. Vaibhav, a student giving the paper at Ramanujan says, “Our syllabus was completely different than what came in the exam. I read the first question and I thought I don’t know this, I read the second question and I didn’t know it and when I got to the third question, I raised my voice and asked is this In the syllabus and everyone there agreed that all of this wasn’t in the syllabus.”

Initially, the invigilators had been very helpful in alerting the administration. However, after an hour was waste by these students, they were told to either attempt the paper or leave, and
no helpful solution was provided. This threw the students into a very bad situation.

Rishansh, who had called the teacher during the exam says “ When I asked the authorities for help during the exam, initially they were helpful but then after a while, they said this is your syllabus according to the DU website. When I called the teacher, he didn’t pick up, he later responded saying he couldn’t pick up due to the DUTA strike. I tried to coordinate with the teacher to sort this out the next day but he was not serious at all. We are very worried.”

Another similar incident was observed on the 7th of December during the Political Science paper for the first semester throughout Delhi University. Students claim to have received questions from the old syllabus.

“We had 3 questions from Democracy which wasn’t there in the new syllabus. Everybody was upset about it but nobody exactly complained about it. We had to attempt any 4 questions out of the 8, so nobody really did anything. And the last question was short notes on any 2 out of 4 and two of them were from democracy and one direct question from democracy,” stated a first year Political Science student from Lady Shri Ram College for Women. To our knowledge, no corrective measures for the same were taken.

Further issues were faced in Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies in Rohini where the paper for Basics of Statistical Inference was delayed by 1 hour since it didn’t reach the college on time.

These recurrent instances speak volumes about the impetuous nature of the Examination Department of Delhi University. These heedless actions may severely impact the academic careers of countless students. Hopefully, these errors would be corrected in a timely manner.

The aspirants at were taken aback by the mismanagement, which led to several parents and students waiting till midnight to get their admission done.

On 1st July 2019, the second day of admissions for the first cut-off list saw over-crowding and unprofessionalism by the authorities which led to a number of students suffer till midnight.

A source who had gone to get admission in B.A. (Programme) during the first cut-off list revealed that there was only one counter for all the courses which caused the ruckus.  He said “They collected applications from all the students and then announced their names for eligibility. It took nearly four hours to get the eligibility slip.” According to him, many parents waited till midnight and even beyond that to complete the admission process.

Another applicant’s sister who accompanied him for admission to Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Evening) also stated that there was major inconsistency in administrations during admissions. She revealed that she had to go there twice to complete the process, first on 30th June and then on 1st July. She said, “There was no systematic process for admissions, no proper counters or queues which created immense chaos. The students from National Cadet Corps of the college were on duty and worked diligently but I couldn’t see any teacher-in-charge supervising them or helping them resolve the chaos.”

We contacted Mr. Sunil Kumar, Secretary, Staff Council at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College Evening who himself stayed till 11 a.m. in the College to get the admissions done. He touted over admissions as a cause for this prolongation. He revealed that despite having a capacity of 814 seats, the college has taken in 1013 admissions, wherein even now, the admissions are open for courses like B.Com (Programme), B.Com (Hons.) and some combinations of B.A. Programme. While in other colleges, a combination of Commerce and Economics in B.A Programme has 15 seats ideally, the college has admitted around 100 students. He added  “Unlike other colleges l, we did not close the admissions at 6 p.m. We cooperated and admitted all the students who were eligible. My non-teaching staff stayed back till 4 a.m. in the morning to complete procedures for everyone who had come.” He also stated that around 8 p.m. the administration announced that parents can submit their documents and leave, the authorities would complete formalities and give them their fee slips in the morning the next day, but there were many who had come from different cities and wanted to take slips with them, so they stayed in the campus grounds till late.

He also added that there was no mismanagement per se, it just took a lot of time because of the intake of students. He stated  “We have admitted 106 students against the EWS quota which only has 37 seats, 438 against Unreserved category which had 373 seats, 308 admissions were done against 219 seats from the OBC quota and 141 against 121 for ST seats. We didn’t deny admission to any student who was eligible and hence, it took a lot of time”

Shaheed Bhagat Singh( 1907 – 23 March 1931) was a celebrated Indian socialist and revolutionary, whose intense patriotism made him a youth icon for generations to come. Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (SBSC), named after him recently commemorated Shaheedi Divas on 23rd March 2018 to mark the 87 the anniversary of the martyrdom of India’s revolutionary hero. The function was organised by the Cultural Council of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, under the convenorship of Dr. Simple Mohanty.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Shri Amarjeet Singh Dulat, author of the 2015 best-selling book, Kashmir: The Vajpayee Years. Dulat, a 1965 batch veteran IPS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, had gone on to head the Research & Analysis Wing and was also the PMO’s chief advisor on Kashmir during Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee’s regime. He was an epitome of modesty when he said that he was not knowledgeable enough to speak on the occasion. The pearls of wisdom he shared with the audience, proved him wrong.

Referring to Shaheed- e- Azam Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom, he said that had the former lived on, we may perhaps have seen a different India. Referring to Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s staunch secular and socialistic credentials, Shri Dulat said that the former chose to remain an atheist till the end, swearing only by the religion of love for and service to the motherland; and the foundation for this love for and service to the motherland was Hindu- Muslim unity. Reminding us about the indispensability of Hindu- Muslim unity, Shri Dulat quoted the words of the Nightingale of India, Sarojini Naidu who called it the Sangam of National Life– like the perfect union of the Ganges and Yamuna at Prayag, the perfect union of Hindus and Muslims would see each preserve its own culture & purity even at the point of union.

Dr. Shyam Sundar, seniormost faculty of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College addressed the gathering on behalf of the Principal, Dr. P. K Khurana, who was unwell. felicitated the eminent guests. He also announced the initiation of a merit-cum-means scholarship to support the education of wards martyred police and paramilitary personnel. This scholarship was started by Dr. Khurana at the behest of a former faculty member of the college from the Department of Geography, Dr. Krishna Prabha, and her husband Justice S. K. Agarwal. Shri Dulat lauded this as the noblest of causes.

The students of various societies of the college also got a chance to interact with Shri A.S Dulat as he gave away mementos and certificates of appreciation to them.

A plethora of cultural events were organized by the college which fascinated the spectators. Audiophile, the music society, performed a medley of songs with pleasing renditions of Indian classical music.

Spardha, the western dance society, gave a dazzling dance performance with an amalgamation of upbeat and popular songs.

The Finance and Investment Society of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College hosted a new edition of the decades-old mock-stock titled ”House of Traders”. The hype of the event was such that there were 200+ registrations from various colleges. The event had both online and offline preliminary rounds with the final round held on the college campus on 26th October.

The offline prelims consisted of an exciting quiz where participants had to bet on the answers and the teams with the highest closing balance moved on to the next round. The final round had three sub-rounds where all the teams had to trade with a given capital in a mock stock and form policies as the Parliament of different countries. Gurmehar Sethi and Bhavya Mathur emerged as the stars of the event with the highest amount of capital at the end of third round.
The event was successfully conducted by the event heads Prasoon Aggarwal and Anuj Sharma with the help of FIS members and guidance of core team and convener Mr. Rajkumar Aggarwal.

“They may kill me, but they cannot kill my ideas. They can crush my body, but they will not be able to crush my spirit.” – Shaheed Bhagat Singh

More than a century ago, a true visionary and patriot, Shaheed Bhagat Singh was born. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College hosted an event in his memory by inviting Mr. Yogendra Yadav for a guest lecture. The scholar recounted stories from Bhagat Singh’s life with great patriotic fervour and talked about the martyr’s relevance in contemporary India. He said that the best way to honour the patriot would be by taking keen interest in today’s politics and thereby contributing to changing the scenario of this country. With great interest, he listened to the questions of the students and gave his insight and views.

A true revolutionary, Bhagat Singh paved the way for the independence of India in more than one way. He could discuss topics ranging from politics to science with a great deal of expertise. He was only 23 years of age when he died but the legacy that he has left behind is going to outlive us all. Bhagat Singh was one of the first socialist thinkers of the country who realised the need to raise the issues of class struggle. He believed in an egalitarian version of society and contributed numerous ideas for the establishment of one. He remains even today as one of the most celebrated freedom fighters. However the question that needs to be raised is: how much of his ideology have we been able to imbibe? At just 23, he left behind a lot of questions to ponder over. We cannot help but wonder whether our disinterested generation has tried to pick up pieces of wisdom from his writings. When most freedom fighters were only working for the decolonisation of the country, Bhagat Singh was trying to look beyond the immediate future. He was trying to create discourses which were required to establish a post-independent India.

In one of his last messages, Bhagat Singh said, “The struggle in India would continue so long as a handful of exploiters go on exploiting the labour of the common people for their own ends. It matters little whether these exploiters are purely British capitalists, or British and Indians in alliance, or even purely Indian.” Had he been alive today, he would have been disheartened to see his worst fears come alive. His vision of an India without the class struggles, poverty, and social injustices still remains a dream. India’s politics today exploit communal, caste, and class conflicts. Everyone manipulates these conflicts according to their convenience. Such a pathetic state of things is certainly a dishonour to the memory of a young man who did not think twice about giving his life for this country.

Hopefully, his cry of “Inquilab Zindabad” instills in today’s youth the same zeal and patriotic fervour that drove him to pave way for India’s freedom. May his ideas and intellectual legacy help us take his struggle and vision of India forward.

Enactus Hindu

Conceptualised in 2014, Enactus Hindu launched its Project Veerangana in this academic session. The social endeavour aims to propagate safety ideals for all by transforming young, unemployed women into self-defence instructors. The previous social campaigns of the society include Project Shreshth and Project Oorja. Their pilot project, Shresth, transformed a group of financially dependent women from the Badli Industrial Area, Rohini into self-sufficient entrepreneurs who manufacture and market incense sticks under the brand name ‘Aanchal Aggarbatis’. Project Oorja strives to preserve environmental balance by providing clean solar lighting solutions to tackle the menace of rising carbon footprints. Under its current project, the society introduced a campaign titled ‘Be A Veerangana,’ and witnessed two months of intensive offline and online promotions, encouraging women to share instances of harassment and breaking the taboo around crimes. At Mecca 2017, the annual cultural festival of Hindu College, their team conducted ‘Road to Safety,’ a unique? simulation of the streets of Delhi, with the objective of raising awareness about simple safety measures which can come in handy in our day-to-day lives. The animal community was also served with its ‘Warmth for Paws’ initiative to provide clothes to street dogs with sweaters made from discarded woollens in the bitter cold months of December and January.

Enactus Khalsa

One of the youngest members of the Enactus community, the Khalsa chapter of the non-profit endeavour germinated in August of last year. While their pilot project is currently under development, they successfully organised an awareness campaign within the college. Titled #LetsMakeGodTalk, the students of the college were induced to deliberate upon the social sphere. On Daan Utsav, the society also organised a visit to a girls’ shelter home and spent a day there with the kids playing games and interacting with them.

Enactus Miranda House

An active member of the social community, Enactus Miranda House has been the launching pad of four successful initiatives since its inception in 2011. Namely Project Zaffran, Project Jazba, Project Tarang, and Project Daryaft, the society aims to boost the issues of financial dependency amongst the women community, strengthening the standing of acid-attack survivors, developing environmentally complementing products, and enhancing the tourism sector, respectively. This year, the society organised a seminar – ‘Astitva’ in relation to Project Jazba, along with a seminar with Mr. Vikramjit Singh Rooprai on the occasion of Heritage Day under Project Daryaft. The annual festival of Enactus Miranda House – Impressa 2017, was organised with the theme ‘Breaking Stereotypes,’ and witnessed events such as open mics and movie screenings. In addition to organising a waste collection drive, the society has also conceptualised an internship programme ranging from the Campus Ambassador Program to Synergy, the Winter Internship Program to propagate ideals of entrepreneurship and initiative.

Enactus SRCC

Perhaps the oldest member of the Enactus community, Enactus SRCC has been doing pertinent projects for a decade now. Some of their recent projects are as follows. Project Life On Wheels facilitates micro-credit for rickshaw pullers by enabling them to own their rickshaws. Project Aahaar is an initiative to rehabilitate underprivileged women by providing them with culinary training. Project Azmat was an endeavour to liberate manual scavengers by providing them with a sustainable source of livelihood through a development of a micro-enterprise and to facilitate construction of proper toilet systems. Project Sattva was an initiative to bring efficiency in India’s dairy sector by the rearing of high yielding cattle and value addition to milk through a mutually beneficial relationship. Project Asbah aimed at providing clean drinking water to rural households through the development and marketing of clay-based water filters produced by a community of potters. With projects like these, Enactus SRCC secured the second runners-up position at the Enactus Nationals 2016. They have received the prestigious KPMG grant and Walmart grant in recognition of the progress made by their projects.

Enactus Shaheed Bhagat Singh College

Since its formation in 2014, Enactus SBSC has come a long way with three socially relevant and inspiring initiatives. Their first project, Project Karva aimed at the upliftment of women. Under Project Roshni, visually impaired people were taught how to make candles as an attempt to become independent as well as self-sustaining. Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, they conceptualised their third project, Project Aahar, which seeks to provide affordable as well as hygienic food to people in need. Other than the projects, two fundraising campaigns were conducted this year. From 5th-7th October 2016, Campaign Umeed took place where members sold bookmarks and notebooks made by the specially challenged children of Deepalaya School. On the 109th birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh under Campaign Anghaar, candles made by the visually impaired to the students of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College were sold. Campaign Sparsh addressed the women residing at Anand Parbat and introduced them to NGO GOONJ’s ‘My Pad’ – a kit that contains undergarments, sanitary pads, and a manual on menstrual health. They also addressed the issue of child sexual abuse as it is one of the major evils surrounding Anand Parbat through organising interactive activities for the children and showing videos that demonstrated the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching.

Enactus Maitreyi College

Established in 2014, Enactus Maitreyi is currently working in collaboration with the National Coalition of People Living with HIV on their third project – Project Samya. True to its name, Project Samya aims at bringing equality to women affected with HIV who are evidently socially excluded and are often forced to quit their jobs. Enactus Maitreyi’s first project, Unnayan, helped the women of Mayur Vihar to make and market a liquid dishwasher, ‘Clean Ninja’ for them to become self-reliant. They launched their second project, Swadhin in 2016, with the aim of helping the physically impaired community by equipping them with entrepreneurial skills. This year the society started its own plantation drive. Other than this, Enactus Maitreyi purchased stationery items for the specially-abled students of Anukriti School, with its own funds by keeping aside INR 2 from the sale of every product. To raise funds, Enactus Maitreyi launched a fundraising campaign called,#IDidMyBit, which was conducted over a period of 2 months. A photo booth in Connaught Place was also created to raise money.

Enactus Sri Venkateswara College

Conceived in 2015, Enactus Sri Venkateswara College has been appreciated for its innovation and uniqueness of projects. The society has successfully churned out three projects, namely Project Captain Compost, Project Aushadhi, and Project CiggB. Project Captain Compost aims to provide a solution to the garbage menace in the city while uplifting the social and economic status of ragpickers at the same time, and Project Aushadhi merged the two issues of homelessness and medicinal waste. Winner of the Blue Dart Grant worth INR 40,000, the society launched Project CiggB this year which focuses on the disposal and recycle of used cigarette butts. To establish a communal outreach, they organised stalls in the fests of Hindu College, Indraprastha College for Women, Kamala Nehru College among others, along with stalls and exhibitions under ‘Heartist,’ where they provided a platform for street artists to showcase their skills and sell their products. In association with ‘People for Animals’ and Enactus SRCC, Enactus SVC also set up a winter cloth collection drive in December 2016. They have also collaborated with ‘Parivartan’, the social service society of Sri Venkateswara College for interaction and skill development of slum children and organised a special event for them to celebrate Children’s Day.

Enactus Hans Raj

A cognizant member of the Enactus community, Hansraj College’s Enactus has been running four projects since its commencement in 2011. Project Lekhni has been successful in helping five women from Jhandewalan to rise from the status of victims to the masters of their lives, Project Boond seeks to solve the problem of clean drinking water for the underprivileged masses by providing them with low-cost water purifiers that run without electricity, and Project Mithaas is an endeavour aimed towards providing a stable source of income to farmers in India by encouraging them to adopt beekeeping as a practice. Enactus HRC conceptualised Project Aaangan this year to provide day-care facilities to working women of lower income strata. Winner of the Best Project for showcasing the spirit of VEER at Enactus Nationals 2016, Enactus HRC has, in addition, conducted a donation drive for Project Aangan. Aashayein’16 was an initiative for the kids of an NGO Navjyoti to help them experience the dream they wished to live. It was a small drive by Enactus Hans Raj to fulfill wishes and spark a fire in them by overcoming challenges.
