Long gone are the days when Instagram was a way of connecting with forgotten friends. The contemporary face of Instagram has undergone a complete makeover. Read on to know more.

A name on everyone’s lips and imprinted on everyone’s mind; Instagram. A social media application that gained enormous popularity in the last decade, Instagram is all what one needs. From thrift stores to connecting with counsellors, this genie from Aladdin’s Lamp grants every wish of yours irrespective of the count. Ask a ‘millennial’ about their contact information and they will drop down their fancy usernames on Instagram. On a personal note, I know most of my followers through their usernames and not their real names. Such is the level of influence that Instagram has done on our lives. As if the sophistication wrapped around in the cloth of our lives was not enough; Instagram added more to the same.

As the title suggests, I am not here to elucidate and throw limelight on the good side of Instagram. I would not dare to state that it is completely absent. It is very much alive and kicking but let us keep it for some other article, shall we? Today, I am here to focus on an aspect that mostly hides itself under the tag ‘beauty’. An aspect that strives to be perfect but it is not. The aspect of toxicity prevailing in the current Instagram trends.

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if the social media trends were for mere fun and not people recklessly trying to prove themselves better?

–says Sayantani Singha from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata.

When it comes to myself, out of the 12 months in a year I am only active on Instagram for about a month if you could count the total number of days. This inactivity doesn’t arise from inborn dislikeness towards social media in general. The plant of dislike grew over time; getting nourished whenever I opened up my account. The dislike has turned into hatred now, if I have to be more precise. All thanks to Instagram’s recent brainchild, reels. Reels are those short 15 second clips that an user can upload for promoting their talents, delineating an amalgamation of scenic pictures from a trip, etcetera. It came in more like a substitute to another platform known as TikTok or Musically.

I don’t have a problem with reels in general. They are fun, I agree to the core. The problem arises at my end when it comes to certain trends that are spreading faster than fake news. Let me first talk about a current trend : “How did I go from this to this?” While some users are using this trend to show their artistic progression over the years, be it in the field of dance, music, make-up, etcetera; some are portraying puberty with the term ‘glow up’. If you ask my mother about the changes in my body or face, she’ll reply bluntly stating about puberty. But, the above stated trend degraded to such a level that individuals have started using their childhood photos and portray their so-called ‘glow-up’. Learning how to dress yourself better and apply cosmetics to beautify oneself does not mean glow up if we compare it with the times when we didn’t even know how to comb our hair.   “Doechi, introduce yourself to the class” can be termed as the first trend’s sister. While some use it to portray the vivid makeup skills they possess, many are indulged in this puberty transformation itself.

There was a time when social media was a platform where we used to indulge in our free time, but now times have changed. Nowadays we free our time to indulge in social media. There is a recent trend that we can frequently see in our Instagram reels, that shows people’s transition from Anjali in kuch kuch hota hai to Poo in kabhi khushi kabhi gham. However in our real lives, this transition might be very opposite from these virtual glow ups we often see. We often suffer from body images of being too fat,too skinny or having bad skin and social media and its glorification of glow ups further worsens these issues. For I say, people evolve or grow up,we adapt to various external factors-we adapt ourselves to recent fashion trends, learn how to present ourselves in a proper manner and this isn’t a part of a glow up phenomenon but rather an adaptation due to growing up

says Mridusmita Barman from Cotton University, Guwahati.

If the definition of glow-up is restricted to wearing fashionable clothes and make-up, I beg to differ from the same. For a person like me whose hands tremble due to nervousness while applying eyeliner, it’s difficult to relate with such trends. Also, not every individual grows up to have flawless skin and body. For some, their puberty comes with other uninvited guests like recurring acne problems, body issues, etcetera. I won’t be wrong if I say that my skin was much better during my childhood days even though I possessed zero fashion senses. I was better at a stage when insignificant things like Instagram did not make me feel inferior to my peers.

With unrealistic beauty standards introduced by these trends, Instagram is becoming a toxic platform. The stereotype hourglass figure of 36-24-36 inches, crystal clear skin where flowers might grow, a pointed Roman nose and what not. My hatred for Instagram comes from these reasons. Imagine how strong these influences are for teenage/ young adults like us that many even go for surgeries at this age itself. Certain instagram models and influencers have also ingrained their so-called perfections of stereotyped ‘beauty’ into the minds of young individuals to a large extent.

These days people are faking everything on Instagram just to keep the trend and meet the standards or so. I know one girl, she even got her eyelid surgery during 9th standard and now she is trying really hard to be like the perfectionists and all. However, this made her mentally depressed also. It’s very hard.

As I scroll down and down through my Instagram feed, I realise that most of the individuals are living the life of their dreams. I get jealous, I won’t deny. Perfect bodies, perfect jawlines and the list goes on. But, as I delve deeper I realise this perfection is nothing more than a mirage. A facade as the title suggests. This is what one of my contacts shared and it goes like this : “Do you feel your body is fat, ugly, imperfect? Girl, this body of yours is keeping you alive during a deadly pandemic. Respect and love it.” Instagram is just a social media platform, don’t let it become your life.

With so many fests coming up, one wonders what are the new trends to follow and what are the fashion no-nos.
Fests are an essential part of college life, especially in University of Delhi where the season starts in the month of February and goes on till April. Some of the most iconic fests- Hindu College’s Mecca, Sri Venkateswara College’s Nexus, Miranda House’s Tempest, and many more are events that every DU kid looks forward to. In the freezing winters our options of what-to-wear seem less than the what-not-to-wear. And with Instagram setting high standards, are the ‘winter looks’ something an average student can recreate?
But fret not, here are a few easy-to-create and yet trendy looks to make a style statement, this fest season:
The Blazer Look
The first look is a chic outfit which can make you look fun-but-professional in a few simple steps. The model pairs a simple black tube top and a classic plaid bottom with a bright white blazer. Another glam look is the black casual tee with black jeans paired with a contrasting turquoise blue blazer. These contrasting blazers add an extra oomph to your usual look making you fest ready!
The Over-Sized Sweater
This look can never go out of style! You can wear a solid grey, over-sized sweater and accessorise it with a black, knitted visor cap. With so many fests lined up, planning outfits every weekend can get hectic, this look is super cute and comfy! Adding bold red lipstick helps you turn on the glam, effortlessly.

Winter Dresses
Why should winters come in the way of your quest to pull off the perfect fest look? Here are three ways to slay, the right way! First is an iconic, full sleeved, dark red winter dress partnered with a grey leather jacket. Second is a winter classic olive green colored, full sleeve dress paired with a fur jacket which adds to the wholesome look. Complete the look with your favorite thigh-high boots! Third is an oh-so-essential beige, without sleeve dress, complimented with a pastel colored coat and matching heels which will help you nail the minimalist vibe at the next fest.

The Denim Dream
Here are 2 looks you can try to dazzle in denim. The first is a simple black, high neck with a denim skirt, black stockings (yes, they are in fashion!) and black knitted visor cap, super easy and cute! The second is a denim jacket and denim skirt, paired with a black bodysuit. The big hoops paired with both outfits are back in fashion and really flatter the classic denim on denim style. This look can help you rock the retro vibe.

Trendy Co-ords
Co-ords are a trend which have created a stir and are our must-haves. The model adorns a peach co-ord, you can also accessorize this look with statement gold jewelry to get an edge and nail the Coachella vibe. This is a chic look and can set you apart from the crowd.

Animal Print and Leather
The first outfit is a simple red, full sleeved top partnered with a short black leather skirt and thigh-high black boots. The second look is an animal print top, black leather skirt and black stockings. In the third look the model adorns a simple animal print dress. The bold black lip adds the flair to your usual leather outfit and helps you channel your inner Safiya Nygaard.

The standard of fests in DU is on a high, with performances by The Local Train, Zaeden, Prateek Kuhad and many more. These outfits are classic, casual and can add fire to your usual attire, giving you more confidence to go out and slay the fest season with the perfect look!

Here’s looking at various fashion trends that will help you up your style game instantly and let you be the Pataka that you are.

Diwali is right around the corner and everyone is frantically browsing through the various fashion trends, looking for inspiration online, and scouring the streets of Chandni Chowk for their desired outfit. There seems to be no end to this madness that engulfs people every year at this time.

Let us look at some ways that could really help you to make a style statement:

  1. Sarees
This Indian attire exuberates elegance and never goes out of style. The timelessness of a saree is what makes it a personal favourite. Go through your mother’s saree collection and grab what suits you best. You could either opt for a silk one to amplify the elegance or pick up a more modern and sheer silhouette like chiffon to look chic. You can even experiment with the draping techniques. Blouses can be substituted with printed, contrasting crop tops, or if you like, go for a blouse cut that pleases you the most.

  1. Palazzos

It baffles me time and again how comfortable palazzo can be. Either opt for a plain Kurta or a tank top and printed, colourful palazzo or a Kurta that is rather heavy and pair it up with complementing, plain palazzo. You can add a scarf to this mix and you would be Diwali ready. A variety of these could be picked up at Delhi Haat or Sarojini, or even chains like Westside.

  1. Jhumkas

If there is one accessory that could complete your whole look, it would probably be Jhumkas. To add that extra flash and traditional touch to the whole attire you can pick these up on the basis of size and colour depending on your attire as a whole. Understated silver ones as opposed to a chunkier colourful one might do the trick if you are not going for something too dressy. Jhumkas can easily be bought at Lajpat Nagar, Chandni Chowk, and Sarojini.

  1. Juttis or Kulhapuris

It is better if you opt for flats over heels, as they would be more comfortable and always provide you with the mobility that this festival demands. Walking around in heels for hours at a stretch can be severely uncomfortable and there are a number of medical issues that sprout up due to its prolonged usage. At this point, it is better to go for Juttis or Kolhapuris that might look even chic and fashionable.

This Diwali, let’s vow to not burst patakas, but rather be one. Happy Diwali!

Gargi College – ‘THE’ college where all that girls do apart from their lectures is great fashion! Being a student of such a college, you automatically tend to follow a trendy breed no matter how off you are with styling. Similar is the case with Nikita Jain, with the only difference being, that she was born with a fashionable spoon. She follows the mantra – ‘The shorter, the better!’. While she is obsessed with her tiny bodycon dresses and hot pants, she is also a once in a blue moon surprise package with her indian wear. The question is, who should we thank for such an amazing fashion discovery, DU or Nikita herself?Wooplr Nikita Jain

Coming as complete astonishment, is this combination of sugar and spice and everything nice, Nayana Roy Choudhury! So, just in case you thought that the DU Fashion is saturated in a handful colleges, she is here to prove you wrong! Being the pioneers of vogue in Delhi University, Kamla Nehru College gets its fame through sizzles like Arshdeep. Having associations with her fashion society in the college, she owes every bit of her chicness to it! She feels that a personal style might be inborn, but, fashion, is a learning process that wouldn’t end till you cross an age where you fall for your whites! We love how she loves her lipshades and flaunts her reflectives just with the right ray of sun falling on her.

‘Bored? Let’s style up!’ – With styling checked among her favorite pass time, Srijoni is one fashionista, you’d look at and question her of being a student at Miranda House, or at any college for a fact. With a touch of professionalism in her styling, she never fails to lose out on any attention in her college. She might seem a quiet person to you initially, but, she will be at her best when she is in her perfect attire, which is everyday! She has her own moods when it comes to her daily looks. While, at times, she is all quirky, and at times, she is this elegant Indian lady brimming with a unique sense of style!

‘They say, if you want to find the typical ‘dilli girl’, then Daulat Ram College is your place to be!’ We weren’t really sure of this quote, until we came across, Monika, who has got that perfect DRC vibe in her, making us believe, that irrespective of the fact that you’re a delhiite or not, DU, will make you one, at least with your fashion! She has a closet that can bring any girl in envy of her. Street shopping is her choice for college wear, and for formal occasions, she hits to destinations that would remain a big secret. The exclusivity, though, is not in the place where she shops from, but, the way she moulds it to her personal touch!

One of our oldest fashion influencers, Uzma is the Wooplr sweetheart. She walks on the path that says, ‘Don’t over-do, but, do what you think is right!’. She is a very simple girl when it comes to fashion, but, when it comes to looking a class apart, she knows how to make a kill with her sophistication. The catch for her is the uniqueness of an outfit and bling, what bling? Pursuing Psychology honors from Lady Shri Ram College, she is an amazing mind reader and that’s how she manages to leave a lasting mark on great minds with her jaw-dropping Forever 21 Fashion!
