The Panorama Film Appreciation Society of Jesus and Mary College, in association with Recyclewala Labs, organized an interactive session with critically acclaimed Actor-Producer Sohum Shah to spread recognition of the National Level Story Search Activity campaign, on 28th October, 2015, at 1 pm in Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University.

Sohum Shah, who’s known for his exceptional production of films such as ‘Ship of Theseus’, ‘Gulaabi Gang’ and ‘Newborns’, conveyed how “every little spark of idea holds immense importance while writing scripts”, and that, “it’s mostly an overflow of different ideas which end up creating the unique soul of a movie.” He revealed the basis of his production’s Pan-India Story Search Activity which aims to encourage students all over the country to set free their stimulating power of imagination and submit their flood of ideas or accounts of interesting stories in at least five to ten pages, and unleash the hidden scriptwriter in them. An amalgamation of some of the best entries would then be taken into account and adapted into a movie, with great rewards kept in store for the selected writers.

Credited to the lively personality of Sohum, the students talked about everything and held back nothing. There was a buoyant exchange of ideas for screenplays and self-made stories by all budding writers. Discussions on the ‘likes and dislikes’ of different types of films and the wide range of changing themes that have recently gained popularity was a subject happily covered by all movie-buffs and Bollywood lovers.

A moment of sweet nostalgia was then triggered on being asked about his inspiration to enter the movie industry. “As a kid,” he recalled smilingly, “I was a die-hard fan of Shah Rukh Khan and his romantic movies, with my all-time favorite being Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.” He recollected being lost in his fantasy world most of the time, which he felt, instead of holding him back, as most of the people around him normally suspected, helped him move forward in life. He said, “It helped me create beautiful visions and ignited the spark of my imagination, through which I only learnt to create more realistic stories later. It also helped me to believe in myself.” He further declared that, “Without a meaningful degree of passion and love, it’s very difficult to sustain one’s dream.”, and so, “it’s only by constantly believing in yourself and in your dreams, that you can create means to fulfill them one day.”

On being asked what he enjoyed watching more- Parallel lines or mainstream cinema movies, he replied, “For me, the world is full of surprises. In fact, life is itself a surprise- a fascinating contradiction. Therefore, one must never limit themselves to any one range but enjoy all kinds of movies.”

In the end, he was only more than overwhelmed to achieve such great responses and ideas from the audience, and expressed that he loved each and every minute of their interaction. In reciprocation, he wanted everyone to catch his upcoming movie ‘Tumbad’, a fantasy-horror film which will be released very soon.

Arthritis affects over 180 million people in India, with 10% of arthritis patients being among the youth. Considering the alarming prevalence of this condition, Yogindra Malik, a 24 year old software engineer by profession, is leading a unique initiative powered by the youth to spread awareness regarding arthritis and its associated symptoms and conditions. Recognising the fact that people with arthritis face unique barriers such as high costs of treatment, and difficulty accessing medication, this initiative is geared towards reducing the burden of the patients and their families through a committed network of volunteers.

Personally affected by a number of sports injuries, Yogindra believes in the life-altering significance of disseminating information. “There is a definite lack of knowledge pertaining to arthritis, particularly among the youth. Awareness can help in preventing the condition from aggravating,” he says. Further, juvenile arthritis is a serious condition that affects thousands of children and their families in the country. Through this initiative, Yogindra seeks to facilitate access to resources and care for arthritis patients, by partnering with health care providers to ensure powerful health tracking tools and local resources to persons affected by the condition.

Through social media communities and fund-raising events, this initiative aims at bringing individuals with arthritis and their families together, to get the support they require while supporting others in need at the same time.

Yogindra hopes to involve the Delhi University student community in spreading trusted awareness in order to ensure timely intervention in the case of this debilitating condition. Students are invited to volunteer with this initiative or register as campus ambassadors, by sending in their CV to [email protected].

In a metropolitan city, while the lights accentuate its grace and the technology makes lifestyle no longer a run of the mill, it only gets harder to keep up with the prices climbing the escalators at break-neck speed with every passing year. We do get that ‘pricey’ tag, but, only we know what really goes into making this city, ‘Dillwalo ki Dilli’! What Delhi just cannot compromise on are two things, Food and Fashion. Lets not get to the Foodaholics, since, there is absolutely no stopping for them! But, as for our budding Fashionistas, it is crucial for them to know how to still be a shooting star in a limited budget. Wooplr brings all you ladies, a perfect solution with 20 ways in which you can become a budget Fashionista in Delhi :

  1. ONE TWILL, 5 WAYS!

If you are on of those hoity toities who wouldn’t repeat clothes more than once, then it is definitely going to cross your shopping budget. To avoid that situation, the idea is to purchase every cloth in such a manner that it could be used in 5 different ways. Turn a wrap-around skirt into a kimono, a scarf, an off shoulder top, and see how every time it creates new magic!

2. EVERY STREET HAS A HIDDEN SURPRISE, EXPLORE!

Is Sarojini Nagar your favorite street market too? Have you covered all streets in the web yet? We are sure, not! Explore as much as you can and avoid the easy routes. Find streets that very few people have explored yet. That’s when your wardrobe will be blessed with the most unique stuff. That too, with the price of your choice!

3. MASTER YOUR BARGAINING SKILLS!

‘My life, My rules!’, relatable? Change this to, ‘My fashion, My money!’. The most difficult yet interesting skill you need to ace if you’re a street shopper is your bargaining skill. Always settle for the price you think is worth for your purchase. Butter polish the vendor a little and the entire stall might just be yours!

4. BUY WHAT YOU LOVE, LOVE WHAT YOU BUY!

One of the most crucial shopping rule is to keep away from dilemmas. You should always be sure about what you like and what is completely off your choice. And, once you make your purchase, don’t question it, rather, fall for it! No matter how an outfit is, you will anyway make it look stunning!

5. HOW ABOUT WRITING MEMOS OF MUST-HAVES?

Having a pre-decided list of things you wish to buy will help you decide your budget wisely. One of the reasons why we over spend during shopping is because we tend to pick up stuff randomly without even thinking about it’s worth. So, the focus should be drifted to what you really need, and that’s where you put a full stop on the budget.

6. KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN FOR SALE ECHOES!

It is true that the sale season might not be the best time to shop, but, you know what? If you have a great nose for exclusive stuff, you can get the best results from a sale, both style-wise and money-wise! All you need to do is to keep a track of which brand releases its sale during which time of the year and be the first one to hop in!

7. RESTRICTED TO YOUR FAVORITES? OPEN YOUR ARMS FOR THE FRESH!

We all have our favorite brands, markets and designers! We tend to become such loyalists that we are blinded by their trust. We will never question their quality and neither will we pay anything less than what they tag. But, to be a budget Fashionista, it is necessary to open your arms for other brands, so you not only get a better variety to pick from, you will also know how much you should spend on a particular thing!

8. COZ WE LOVE THE WORD ‘FREE’!

Keeping the love for diamonds, shoes and chocolates aside, the bible for girls also quotes that we love everything that says ‘free’. Well, we wouldn’t deny that, since, the happiness of redeeming free vouchers or receiving free gifts from stores is something not everyone can relate to. So, never feel shy to ask for free vouchers or gifts at any shopping arcade!

9. DON’T DISPOSE OFF YOUR RECEIPTS AND BILLS TILL THE END OF THE MONTH!

A budget Fashionista apart from being the talk of the town is also the most organised when it comes to the shopping rituals. Maintain a nice file of all your shopping bills so incase of an exchange, you don’t have to get into a riot with the dealer due to loss of bill! Not everything will turn out to be perfect after you start using it, hence, precaution is better than cure!

10.  KNOW YOUR WARDROBE WELL!

For shopaholics, the hardest task is to remember the amount of purchases they have made. The story gets worse when you also fail to recall where you had kept the last set of clothes you bought. It is vital for every Fashionista, especially, a college go-er to know what’s in their wardrobe. You can also divide your wardrobe into different sections to avoid confusion. Keep separate shelves for new and old purchases so the tendency of repetitiveness decreases!

11.  OLD IS GOLD!

Fashion never runs out of Fashion! While new trends will always keep seeping into the industry, the older ones would still never wash out. Don’t shove away the clothes you bought years ago, infact play some #throwback games, get them out and see how you can mix and match them with the currently trending styles!

12. DIY BE THE NEW TREND!

The most loved trend of a budget fashionista is the ‘DO-IT-YOURSELF’ trend! Every Time you think you cannot wear a particular piece of clothing anymore, your reflex action should be to take your stationery out, find some cute decorative material from the local markets around you, and get on to some amazing DIY styles! No better a satisfaction than low cost, perfect fashion!

13. ARE YOU A MUMMA’S GIRL? STEAL HER STYLE!

How during our childhood days, we’d play dress up games using our mothers’ dupattas! Who said you are too old for it! Your mom’s closet might have a lot of antiques that you could flaunt in front of the world. From colorful dupattas to sarees to accessories, you can use it all to create new looks everyday! Smile on when they tell you that you look like your mom!

14. FIND A TAILOR, MAKE HIM YOUR PERSONAL DESIGNER!

Delhi being one of the Fashion capitals, inhabits one of the largest and the most cheapest cloth markets in the whole of India. Specifically known only to designers, these markets should definitely be among your must visits! Buy your favorite material and look out for a perfect tailor who can do wonders with it and make you a great outfit. We are sure, no brand would offer what your tailor will!

15. PLAY SWAP PARTIES WITH YOUR GIRLIES!

If you have a heck of the ‘Paying Guest’ Lifestyle of Delhi, we’re sure you are quite used to the swap parties! If not, start now! Share your wardrobe with your girlies and don’t think too much if you wish to borrow something from theirs! This way, you will not only save your money, but, your friends’ too! The climax of this cycle will have all you girls shining in your new attires!

16. LOVE QUANTITY, BUT DON’T LOSE OUT ON THE QUALITY!

Considering that you have set budget for shopping, your idea will always be to purchase as much as you can within the budget and still manage to save up. Sounds fair! But, while all your attention is on quantity, remember not to settle for a low quality. A fashionista would always wear the best of trends in the best of qualities, so, check on the quality first, analyse the rates and then give it a green signal!

17. WATCH STYLE VIDEOS AND LEARN NEW TRENDS!

During your free time, tune in to some amazing style videos and try to replicate them in your own ways. In today’s time, there are some popular fashion bloggers, who will not only teach you styling, but, also suggest places from where you can purchase reasonable outfits to create flawless looks!

18. NEVER WASTE YOUR COSMETICS!

A common mistake that every girl makes is that she disposes off her cosmetics long before they are actually used completely. Use every cosmetic to the fullest, since, you wouldn’t find them any cheaper. For your dried out nail polishes and foundations, look out for great remedies over the internet and make them new all over again!

19. BE TECH-FRIENDLY, SHOP ONLINE!

More and more Delhiites are shopping online these days. Make this work to your advantage! Usually, the e-commerce websites offer more discounts and coupons than any retail store. What better than saving time as well as money at the same time. Also, you wouldn’t even have to worry about your style getting common among the crowd, for, what you get online, you don’t get anywhere else!

20. REMEMBER! LESS IS MORE!

You will never need too many words to make a line popular! Similarly, too many elements in an attire would simply spoil the grace of your look. Try to purchase limited stuff that you know is just enough to create a unique style statement. One classic accessory with the outfit can leave a bigger impact on people than a look where they have too much to see!

Over the past couple of weeks, DUB’s Fashion Police went patrolling the North and then, the South, arresting the fashion-savy and fetching you their style tips and mantras. This time, we decided to go a little off-campus. With our keen eye, we were quick to spot our fashion forward students, whom we asked “Which celebrity wardrobe would you like to own?” Here is what we found out:

1.“I would love to own the checkered jacket which Shahrukh Khan wore in Om Shanti Om. The jacket looks so retro and peppy to me, it’s like the perfect jacket for any occasion, plus it was worn by Shahrukh Khan, so it spices up things all the more for me.”

Every last week of October, IIT Delhi serves excitement and entertainment in the rendezvous it organises for students across India.

The institute hosted it’s annual  cultural fest, Rendezvous 2015 for four days starting from the 16th of October. The fest witnessed explosive  energy from the ends of both, the entertainers and the entertained.
Day 3 (18th October) and Day 4 ( 19th October)  of Rendezvous were planned on the highest unit on the scale of creative and entertaining vigour. Day 3 of Rendezvous saw a massive queue for “Kavi ki Kalpana” with renowned poet, actor, director and singer Piyush Mishra. The patient audience who had waited for hours was sufficiently satiated by the end of the poetry recital and a fun filled discussion with the speaker.

In addition, formal competitions like Aagaz and Swar for Indian classical Music;  Paintara and Komiketto for art, iconography and cartooning unleashed a Pandora’s box of talent.  A Beauty Pageant, ” Campus Princess ” was also hosted the same day. The day did not see the night so early.

The evening of Day 3 kick started with the much awaited EDM night with Sun Burn at OAT in the Rendezvous Village. A humongous audience  gathered to cheer for the performers of the Western Choreography and the Western Group Dance competitions.

Day 3 and Day 4 also had a lot going on the informal stage. The informal events such as Bomb SquadBurp MirchiBlind fold drawingand Tashreef Rakhiye Janab saw an entirely unique level of excitement and kept attendees of Rendezvous engaged in a struggle to win cool prizes and goodies.

Day 4 was more of lil’ Humour and lots of music and dance.

The day started musically with Western group and Western Solo music competitions. This was followed by Solo Dance Face offs and the Duo Dance competition. The spacious Dogra hall of IIT D, went out of space for innumerable audience when renowned poet Surendra Sharma effortlessly left the audience into scores of laughter. His speech like that of Piyush Mishra was also topical in it’s concern towards the ills of extremism, Communalism and Oppression of the female body prevalent in India.

DHOOM, the much awaited star night of IIT D with Shankar Ehsan Loy was scrapped half way, when the crowd outside the venue became uncontrollable. The unfortunate event happened even when the organisers had made every effort to put a bar on the number of people allowed to attend the concert and had cut through the presence of a lot of fans who wanted to be a part of it.

Rendezvous 2015 concluded with an impression which is characteristic of this cultural festival. It raised it’s own bar and set a new horizon of expectations for another rendezvous.
