The second day of Mood Indigo, 2015 kicked off with the elimination round of Aagaaz, the street play competition with heart wrenching and rib-tickling plays plays on social issues by teams from colleges across the country.

Anita Nair was amongst the luminaries gracing the IIT Bombay campus as a part of the Litfest. She talked to a small gathering about her new book ‘Alphabet Soup for Lovers’ and combining her theory about the God Particle, food, and travelling into a quaint and unusual love story. The Bollywood panel of Litfest consisted of Bharathi Pradhan, an eminent journalist and author in talks with Ramesh Sippy, Rajkumar Hirani and Anurag Kashyap about the ‘Evolution of Hindi Cinema’. When asked about changes in the cinema, then and now, Rajkumar Hirani explained that the way of telling and absorbing stories is rapidly changing. Ramesh Sippy emphasized on the importance of content, which according to him, should never outshine technology. Calling failure his greatest motivator, Anurag Kashyap said that language is the greatest setback, when it comes to out reaching audience globally.

Tushar Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani and Gauhar Khan from the upcoming ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum 3’ were also present to promote the movie and release the song ‘Jawaani Le Doobi’ off it.

Another highlight of Day 2 of Mood Indigo 2015 was the Humor fest that featured, for the first time in Mood Indigo history, a roast. With the popular Gujarati Bollywood actor Vrajesh Hirjee in the host seat and the brains behind The Comedy Factory, Manan Desai, as the roast master, Ojas Rawal, Zakir Khan, Priti Das, Arvind Vegda and Samvedna took turns to ‘clean roast’ not just the actor but also each other. Priti Das and Zakir Khan’s turns amused the audience the most.

Competitive events carried on throughout the day. Teams fought it out in the semifinals of the Beat the Street, the Street dance event, and Mantra, the band competition. There were also elimination rounds of Conchord, the Acapella competition and Taal Mel, amongst others. The KV zone offered a range of attractions lasting all four days with events like land zorbing, paint ball, archery, various dance workshops and an art zone with artists showcasing works like book sculptures, leather bound diaries and wallets and custom painted shoes. The day also saw the band Indian Jam Project, who are known to give a classical twist to popular theme songs, performing. The Dance Showcase drew huge crowds as well, with performances from groups like MJ5 and dancers from Terence Lewis’ academy. Day 2 of Mood Indigo wrapped up with Fusion Nite where the band Parikrama enthralled the crowds with their best songs, followed by a performance by Lucky Ali. High Time from Kirori Mal College won Livewire, the semi- professional band competition with their Progressive Disco Funk tunes. Not only did they get to share the stage with the Fusion Nite star performers, the band has also secured a show in Prague as a prize.

Day 3 promises to bring with it even more fun and the finals of a lot of major competitive events including Western Dance, Street Play, Street Dance and others.

Youth Forum on Foreign Policy, an independent and non-partisan initiative instituted to promote substantive dialogue on India’s foreign policy amongst the youth, organized a visit to the Lower House of the Parliament of India on the 9th of December 2015. A delegation of thirty students across various disciplines and colleges of Delhi were invited to participate in the same.

The legislative agenda for the Parliament, meeting between November 26th and December 23rd for the Winter Session includes 19 Bills currently pending for consideration and passage and 14 new Bills have been proposed to be introduced as well. These include The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill 2014, The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill 2014, The Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2014, The Child Labour (Prohibition and Prevention) Bill 2012, The Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority Bill 2015, The National Commission for Women Bill (NCW) 2015, The Anti Maritime Piracy Bill, 2015 and several others pertaining to vital issues for consideration in national interest. Recent developments, however, concerning the National Herald Case which holds the Congress Party President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi in the eye of the storm resulted in both Houses returning to familiar scenes of chaos and disruptions after a week of uncharacteristically civil debates. The afternoon hour on Wednesday scheduled to discuss the ‘The Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Bill, 2015’ staggered through the debate session, to be adjourned multiple times owing to successive disruptions.

This, however, allowed the participants of the scheduled visit to witness democracy at its finest strand of controverted discussions, strengthened through part dissension, part agreement, probably more the former than the latter, in the crucible of Indian politics, the soul of the commonwealth, the Lok Sabha. YFFP looks forward to the opportunity of organizing many such engaging events in future, aligning with the spirit of its inception.

Recursion, askew, anagram. They seem like random words out of the dictionary, but to people interested in finding secrets hidden, these words will have a different significance altogether. To those with much more important work in their lives and less curiosity, I’ll just say to type these words on google, hit enter and enjoy the lesser perks offered by the search engine. Impressed? Try this one: “Do a barrel roll” (minus the quotes). Voila! The magic of the mischievous coders at Google is before your eyes. And no, these small funny little tricks aren’t exclusive for google only.

Programmers all around the world tend to show their intellectual superiority (okay! Not always) by hiding codes that activate bizarre functions when the users performs specific tasks on their websites or their software. And this practice is not just common to the world of technology, every industry related to media does this.

Such a hidden message or a joke (usually intentional and others which are not are claimed to be!) is what is known as an Easter egg. So here’s a list of such eggs which you might find entertaining in this stressful times of examinations:

The Book of Mozilla

People working in Mozilla, since the beginning, have always believed in a higher power. And like any other group that does, they have their own book from which they quote scriptures about beasts. Now, don’t worry, you won’t find these people screaming on corners of streets about the impending doom, evil and the beasts. They’re silently spreading there messages. To view them and get liberated, all you have to do is type about:mozilla in the url bar of the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser.

book of mozilla

The Harlem Shake

The Harlem Shake meme, an internet video phenomenon must have eaten a lot of space on YouTube servers in the early February of 2013 probably because of which it the meme itself got a dedication by the developers at YouTube. To know what it is, just type “Do the Harlem Shake” in the YouTube search bar, put a helmet on, get in the groove, press enter and do the Harlem Shake with YouTube.

Google in 1998

Feeling nostalgic? Visit the version of the search engine from where it all started. You don’t have to browse through archives of the internet to get to the source code to display what Google used to look like in the very beginning. Google respects the curiosity of the young and the memories of the old. Just type “Google in 1998” in the search bar of google.com and you’ll witness the first step of this giant corporation.

The Wikipedia Loop

It is said that every subject began with Philosophy. That’s why the “Ph” in Ph.D. stands for Philosophy. Authors at Wikipedia may not have been able to incorporate philosophy in their every article but they’ve found a very clever way to end them in it. Well, sort of. So, this is how it goes: Go to a random article on Wikipedia and start clicking at the first non-italicized word which is a link. Keep doing this and you’ll always end up with this loop: Philosophy->Reality->Existence->Ontology->Philosophy

The Rube Goldberg of producten.hema.nl

Remember the old Tom and Jerry cartoon in which Tom admires the blue-print for his complex mouse catching trap? Well, if you don’t then this will probably refresh your memory. Go to http://producten.hema.nl/ and hover your mouse over the “jip and janneke bekker” and witness some serious work on flash player.

If you’re scrolling down your newsfeed filled with guilt and wondering why this is all you have been doing for the last two hours and/or what you’re doing with your life in general then you are not alone.

With Diwali over, the preparatory leave already underway, admit card distributions days away there are literally no more excuses left to tell yourself, this IS the time to study and the reason to why you still haven’t started depends on just where you are in the course of your college life.

  • First Year
No semester is harder to study for then your first. Let’s face it recovering from the boards and the trauma of the twelfth grade takes a lot longer than seven months and the first few months of exploring college, taking selfies and socializing doesn’t really help one get into a study mode. Add that to the “it’s okay, it’s just college” thought that has been playing in your head all week and you end up wondering why you aren’t on a road trip with your friends or taking a well-deserved nap considering you have successfully made it to Delhi University (seven months ago)
  • Second Year
If you’ve had a very successful first year then it’s time for a well-deserved break, kick back and relax you’ll manage somehow or some way. If on the other hand you had told yourself all summer that this will be the year to change things and still cannot get yourself to get out of bed and open your books then you have officially hit a sophomore slump. If all you care about is surviving college for another semester well then you probably know that the concept of backs and failing no longer applies in which case all you have to do is just ensure you show up on the day of the exam.
  • Third Year
You’ve given up. Having been to college this entire semester just to either give presentations or submit assignments you probably don’t have any desire to go give the exams either. Moreover, if you’ve been convincing yourself all this time that the dedication, hard work and zeal that enabled you to ace the boards more than two years ago will come back at some stage, well it’s your last year and it’s still not back yet so chances are it’s probably gone for good. So just do what you can to get through the next month and count the days till the fest season commences once again!

In conclusion it is officially the time to set an alarm, fix the old coffee machine, open those dreaded books and somehow salvage what’s left of this semester. So stop reading this and start studying if you haven’t already.

Startups INDIA kick started their flagship event, Start-Up Connect 1.0 at Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, New Delhi on 24th of October 2015. The day was loaded with everything related to startups from the guidance on how to start and build your own startup, to planning the business idea and its fundraising. The event housed a set of eminent and successful entrepreneurs.

12182671_888244967877667_2264400853378600905_o

“Its never about the next big idea, its always about the next big implementation and this is the reason we organised Startup Connect 1.0 to connect with all the like minded people,” says Saurabh Kothari, Founder of Startups INDIA community.

The day commenced with one of the most distinguished entrepreneur as well as a speaker Sameer Grover – CEO, Crown It. He talked about topics: from realizing the ultimate dream of being an entrepreneur to taking the venture to a multi-million estimate. The main focus of his speech was laid onto having a “rock star team” with people supporting the common goal, with complimentary skills. Unlike other entrepreneurs, Mr. Grover emphasised on figuring out the leader among the group saying that “democracy is overrated”. He followed the famous  ‘ant theory’ with the analogy that “failure is inevitable and the next step is to get up and run again”. Finally, he shared his simple theory that “always go back to your basics and do what you love. People may take away your idea, but they can never take your soul” and “you have to work hard to make it a success”.

12182571_888244927877671_2992603126204364830_o

The event was then extended into the session in ‘Cyber Legal Ecosystem’ conducted by Cyber Law expert Sai Sushanth. He enlightened the audience about the various kinds of cyber crimes they are exposed to while using the internet as well as the software; giving away the suggestions to protect oneself from such thefts by creating various layers of protection through IP.

The baton of the event was then passed onto another set of influential orators: Sahil Jain, co-founder Dineout and Vikram Upadhyaya, GHV Accelerator.

Where Sahil Jain took up the talk with a proper entrepreneurial approach, Vikram Upadhyaya mixed it well with an investor’s viewpoint. Mr. Jain’s stressed  on starting a venture that looked onto the kind of problem it was solving. He also shared a complimentary opinion that there can also be “creation of a new market, out of an existing one”, by sighting his very own life example of Dineout.

Later, Mr. Upadhyaya shared how “entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster” and helped specify the points that the investors dig up for. He concluded his speech by advising on to “not to try to raise too much money on the early stage” to the young entrepreneurs.

The day concluded with a final fundraising process for start-ups elucidating the audience on the various ways to raise the funds and the numerous processes involved in doing the same. Saurabh Kochhar, CEO- Foodpanda India and Sandro Stephen, Indian Angel Network concluded the session with a final fundraising session where they discussed with audience all the problems and solutions which startups face at the time of fundraising.

After the speaker sessions, the audience got a chance to interact with these CEOs and investors individually and discuss their queries.
