Kamala Nehru College has launched Delhi University’s first pre-marital communication centre under the National Commission for Women’s mentorship to promote healthy relationships and prepare young adults for marriage.
Kamala Nehru College (KNC) has established ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, a Pre-Marital Communication Centre (PMCC), to promote healthy relationships, mutual understanding and effective communication among young adults. The initiative aims to help students develop the skills needed to navigate interpersonal relationships and make informed decisions about their personal lives.
The centre was inaugurated by National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya K Rahatkar in the presence of students, teaching staff and non-teaching staff of the college. Established under the NCW’s mentorship, it is the first dedicated pre-marital communication centre at Delhi University and the 300th to be established nationally under the initiative.
The centre will provide voluntary counselling to young people considering marriage. Its services will focus on strengthening communication skills and helping individuals understand the expectations, responsibilities and challenges associated with married life. It will also provide a space for discussions on interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, etc.
KNC principal Prof Pavitra Bhardwaj said the initiative would support students and faculty members while extending the college’s outreach to nearby communities. Participation will be entirely voluntary, allowing individuals to seek assistance according to their needs.
To facilitate the centre’s functioning, four to five teachers from the college have received training from the NCW. The college also plans to engage trained psychologists, counsellors and social workers to provide professional support. These efforts are intended to strengthen the centre’s capacity to address relationship-related concerns.
The initiative will extend beyond the campus through community outreach activities. Faculty members and student volunteers will inform residents of neighbouring areas about the centre and its services. Existing awareness campaigns conducted by students in nearby communities will also provide an opportunity to introduce the initiative to a wider audience.
The college has clarified that volunteering at the centre will not currently carry academic credits. As the initiative is in its initial stages and does not yet have an NGO partner, it is not part of the credit-based community engagement component under the Skill Enhancement Course [SEC].
With ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, Kamala Nehru College aims to create a supportive environment where young adults can develop better communication skills, address interpersonal difficulties, and approach relationships with greater understanding. The centre’s planned professional support and community outreach will be important to expanding its reach beyond the college campus.
