On 15th September 2026, a ceiling fan collapsed in the Tapti hostel of JNU, raising serious concerns over the condition and quality of student accommodations in the university.
Following the tragic building collapse in Satya Niketan, a ceiling fan collapsed in the women’s wing at JNU’s Tapti hostel on the night of 15th September 2026. Fortunately, no student was injured, but the incident has raised serious concerns about the state of accommodations provided to students.
The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) said, “In a meeting with JNUSU, the former Associate Dean of Students (ADoS) had said that Tapti and Mahi-Mandavi have been declared unfit for accommodation. Despite this, students are being allotted rooms without any maintenance.”
Tapti hostel, initially built to accommodate women students, later became a coed hostel with a capacity of 400 students. The condition of the hostel is now dilapidated, with plaster crumbling, heavy rusting in emergency exits with missing steps, and broken/missing window panes; it is said to be unlivable for students. With the entire hostel already falling apart, a ceiling fan falling isn’t surprising.
After the shocking and tragic incident, the Students’ Union of the university has come forward asking the university to take immediate action towards the campus infrastructure. The JNUSU has pointed out other safety hazards at the university, such as leaking ceilings, crumbling walls and the neglected condition of Teflas, the student community centre housing the union office. Additional demands, such as the introduction of safety measures and the conduct of a safety audit in the science laboratories of the university, were made in the past week, as inadequate facilities and safety equipment led to health problems.
The JNUSU claimed in its press release that even after multiple complaints and concerns raised by the students, the university did no serious repair or maintenance work to improve the poor condition of the hostels and buildings.
The JNUSU concluded the press release by saying, “We hold the JNU Administration responsible for this continued apathy and warn that further inaction risks a tragedy similar to the one that shook Satya Niketan.”
