Highlights of SRCC’s Crossroads 2014

As expected, SRCC’s ‘Crossroads’ came, it amused, conquered hearts and the ‘last party before forty‘ culminated leaving people with amazing fun filled memories of four interesting days. Apart from the exhilarating star appearances, the fest was also garnered with numerous formal and informal events,games, variety of stalls and great footfall.

Here’s what all happened in the most sought after cultural festival of DU, take a look!

Day One : A jaandar ‘Shaan’dar inaugural to SRCC’s Crossroads

The festival kick started its first day with the ‘shaan’dar performance of the singer cum stage performer Shantanu Mukherjee, commonly known as ‘Shaan’ at Encore. Shaan took a heroic entry singing the famous lines ‘mujhko pehchaan lo, mai hu kaun?’  This was followed by a number of his soft romantic melodies including ‘Tune mujhe pehchana nahi’, ‘Chand Sifarish’ and ‘Jabse tere naina’. Acknowledging the new talent in industry, Shaan sang the chart buster Arijit Singh song ‘Tum hi ho’ from  the movie ‘Aashiqui 2′ on public demand and referred it to be one of his favourite songs too. Not only did he entertain audiences with his melodious voice, but with frequent jokes, digs  and audience interactions. The event concluded with announcement of Bewakoofiyan star cast – Sonam Kapoor & Aayushman Khurrana coming to SRCC on fourth and final day of Crossroads.

Day Two : Random Collisions brings Western – Classical music together

Crossroads brought together Slovenian rock/folk artist Vlado Kreslin and Hindustani classical musician Sharat Chandra Srivastava as part of Random Collisions on 7th March,2014.The duo was also accompanied by Gyan Singh, an accomplished Tabla player.The event began quite promptly and created a mellow atmosphere all at once, quite different from the rest of musical nights taking place in DU fests. As the violin and tabla notes worked magic, it was certainly music to all ears.

Day Two : SRCC goes Supersonic with Dualist Inquiry & Nikhil Chinapa

After enjoying soft romantic numbers with Shaan and blend of western and classical music at Random Collisions, Crossroads brought the audiences to savour the taste of PLUR i.e. Peace Love Unity Respect with VH1 Supersonic bringing their unique EDM music to Crossroads,SRCC. With renowned artists like Audiogramme, Dualist Inquiry and Nikhil Chinapa performing, the crowd was seen throwing hands in air,  feeling completely content and enjoying. The gigantic screen, flame throwers, pyrotechnics and confetti, all added to the night,making it the most happening and memorable one for SRCC as well as DU.

Day Three : Crossroads welcomes international DJ Jennifer Rene

The third day at Crossroads saw Jennifer Rene, a DJ star of international fame mixing EDM tracks. The night began with the song ‘Wake me in’ and what followed were numerous numbers from her own discography. The performer soon got into grooves with her famous tunes and people, specially patrons of this genre of music cheered for Rene and  had a great time.

Day Four : ‘Bewakoofiyan‘ star cast Sonam Kapoor & Ayushman Khurrana at SRCC

B’wood celebs Ayushmann Khurrana and Sonam Kapoor, picked Crossroads 2014 as a platform for the promotion of their upcoming movie ‘Bewakoofiyan’, scheduled to release on 14th of March. The duo entertained the crowd with their presence for about 20 minutes. Ayushman Khurrana sang four songs including, “Paani Da Rang” and “O Heeriye”, whereas Sonam took to the traditional ‘Battle of the Sex’s ‘ path. They distributed limited  goodies of their upcoming film to the massive crowd and signed off leaving a smile on the audience’s faces.

Day Four : SRCC Crossroads culminates with Sukhwinder Singh’s ‘Jai Ho’ & ‘Chaiiyan-Chaiyyan’

SRCC’s Crossroads’ ‘Last party,before forty‘ came to a befitting end with the internationally acclaimed singer Sukhwinder Singh and his troop performing for about two hours, setting the stage on fire with his zeal, enthusiasm and energetic songs like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Haule Haule , Bidi Jalaile , Dard – e – Disco, Dhan Te Nan, Marjani Marjani, Saki Saki, Lagan Lagi, Chak De India, Ramta Jogi and a few more. The night began with Sukhwinder singing ‘Jai Ho‘ the Grammy award winning song from Slumdog Millionaire and ended with the same song completing the circle and leaving the crowd with refreshed memories of the night.

The Foodie’s Junction at SRCC Crossroads

Much like everything else at SRCC’s Crossroads, the food was in large variety. There was something for every palate and pocket. From Italian to Chinese to Indian Street food, it was hard to find something that was not available.

  • Chole Bhature: although they are easily available at various events, SRCC had a variety of chole bhature from different corners of Delhi. Even small, and highly exclusive, eating places like Om Corner had put up stalls there.
  • Cup Cakes: And not the ones that look like they are here because no one bought them off the shelf at the bakery. The ones that wanna make you eat them even when you’re on a diet.

 

  • Waffles: When was the last time you ate waffles at any cafe, much less at a fest!
  • Rico’s: If you’re a DU student who happens to pass by north campus at least once every few months, then you know what I’m talking about. Rico served almost all their specialties at the fest and they tasted like fresh from the oven.

  • Banoffe Pie: Yolo 21 served Banoffe pie that’ll make you want buy one more every half hour. And when I told the stall manager that it was as good as the ones they served in posh south Delhi restaurants for five times the price, he happily said that his was better.

Escapades : Adding adventure

With all the stars that rocked the crowds at night, Escapades made sure that the students were entertained through the day. Bringing the spirit of adventure to SRCC through the four days of Crossroads, the Traveler’s Society truly gave students a chance to ‘forget their limits’. The Xerox lawns were packed through the day with students lining up for the adrenaline rush, a chance to experience the thrill of adventure sports, test their ability and most importantly to have some unrestricted fun. The numerous events lined up under Escapades were the Slow Race, Flying Fox, Zorbing, Paintball, Wall Climbing, Trampoline Volleyball, Dodge Ball & Body Zorbing.

Highlights of Kirori Mal College’s Renaissance 2014

Kirori Mal College’s Annual Fest, Renaissance ’14 was organized from 3rd March to 5th March. This year, the fest featured leading performers including Mika Singh and the popular metal band Parikrama, formed in this very college years ago. Here is a look at all major events of the three day fest:

DJ Night

Scheduled for the opening night of the fest, the DJ Night was hosted by DJ Akansha Popli of MTV Splitsvilla fame and DJ Monty.

Renaissance ’14’s highlight was the star performance by Mika Singh, that attracted audience from the entire university. On this, Jashvender Chauhan, President Student’s Union remarked, “We worked really hard to put together Renaissance ’14. We are happy for the positive and energetic response from all. Mika’s star night was a major hit and I am happy that the crowd had a good time!”

Parikrama

Renaissance ’14 ended it’s three day festival on the band night with a performance by Parikrama.

Before Parikrama, the evening was opened by Alice Rose, a singer from UK, followed by KMC’s fusion band, “Aandolan” and Aadhya, a local Delhi band. They performed on diverse numbers prepping the crowd for the final performance by the KMC Alum rock band, Parikrama.

The Western Dance competition was conducted in the football grounds with the participation of 12 teams. Teams were judged by Manju Sharma, one of top 18 finalists of Dance India Dance; Harendra Singh who has choreographed at various Delhi University colleges and Yogendra Singh from Danceworx.

Highlights of Sri Venkateswara College’s Nexus 2014

Held from 27th February to 1st March, Nexus 2014 – the annual fest of Sri Venkateswara College had a lot to offer. Alongside a mix of competitive events, the organisers jazzed up the fest with Jazzy B. With the unexpected rain changing quite a few things for the second day, Junkyard Groove’s rock performance and Sabari Brothers’ sufi night were held simultaneously.

What all happened? What all did you miss? Who won what? We wrap-up the fest in our highlights!

Rock Performance by Junkyard Groove

In a rock performance that lasted close to an hour, Junkyard Groove played favourites such as It’s Ok and Folk You. They also switched things up in the middle to songs such as Pearl Jam’s Animal and Sweet Child of Mine, taking the crowd by surprise both times.

Sufi Night with Sabari Brothers

To add a sufi element to Venky’s Nexus 2014, Sabari Brothers took the stage during day two of the fest. The event originally scheduled for 6 p.m., started at around 7: 30 p.m. at the college’s auditorium foyer. The Sufi  legends started with the famous Chaap Tilak, moving on to a Coke Studio rendition of Humein toh loot liya and popular Bollywood number Tumse Milke Dilka hai jo haal. The combination of music and shayari along with a crowd that reciprocated with claps and dance, were the highlights of the evening.

The final day of Nexus 2014, might have light on competitive events but was high on energy. The evening started with Mumbai based Krazy Electrons opening for Jazzy B. The band rocked the show with their unique genre called Ethno DnB.

Chatty, the brain behind KE electrified the mood with his beats on the midi based Drum Machine. Ajay Jayanthi, the lead vocalist and Violionist, who comes from a classical background of Carnatic Music enthralled the audience, especially the female ones. The band performed a couple of numbers including, Rage of electrons, Rebel and Eena Meena Deeka.

After their performance, Jazzy B – the star power of the fest came on stage at 7: 30. The Punjabi singer started with the popular Jine mera Dil lutiya. He then moved on to other tracks such as Romeo and the latest Harry is not a Bhramchari. The concert lasted almost an hour with the star mentioning that since he usually performs for a middle-aged audience, he is performing amidst a young crowd after quite some time.

Masti Ki Basti

A tiny corner in the college’s ground had a range of games and activities lined up. Labelled as the Masti ki Basti, to name a few, the area had Lucky Seven, Mehendi art, Obstacle race and Bollywood Quiz to engage the visitors. With college students coming up with interactive tasks and ideas, the corner did have a few hits!

Highlights of Hindu College’s Mecca 2014

A rock night with Papon and the East India Company, a night full of dance with DJ Nucleya of Sunburn fame and Mohit Chauhan’s voice to wrap-up the three day fest – major events at Mecca 2014 in one line.

Along side elaborate crowds in the evenings, the fest was also rife with food and several informal events.

We list out all of it for you!

A devotional beginning

The Annual festival of Hindu College, Mecca started on 20th February. Deputy Commissioner of Police, S.P.S Tyagi, was invited as this year’s chief guest for the opening ceremony. The topic for this year’s festival is “Brilliant Bharat”, celebrating the cultural diversity ever present in Hindu as well as an emphasis on uniting these feelings of brotherhood. Following this formal commencement of Mecca, the cultural show kick-started with a semi-classical dance performance by the Indian Dance Society, Adrita. This was followed by another enthralling performance, with Iskcon mustering heavy support as their Hare Krishna Mahamantra (Search for Happiness) were chanted and danced to by the engaged audiences.

Rock Night with Papon

Angaraag Mahanta who is more famously known to us as Papon performed at Hindu’s Rock Night along with his band East India Company on the first day of Mecca 2014. A large crowd turned up cheering as Papon stepped on the stage and took a hold of his mike. He started the performance with songs like Khumaar (performed by Papon in Coke Studio) which talks about how a guy is passionately in love with a girl but has to spend a difficult day waiting for the night to come when he can see her.

He also sang many of his more famous songs including Dinae Dinae, Kaun mera from the movie Special 26, Kyon from Barfi! And Jiyein kyun from Dum Maaro Dum. However, what really got the crowd going were Papon’s little quirks and jokes as he explained the meaning behind his songs and how in life everything figures out in the end and you find what you are supposed to be, like he did despite being a college dropout.

DJ Night with DJ Nucleya

The second day of Mecca 2014 saw Nucleya take over the stage in collaboration with MTV Indies. Performing for the first time in Delhi University, Nucleya kept the audience on their feet for almost an hour long set. A bass heavy electronic artist from New Delhi, he played all his major hits including Street Boy, Akkad Bakkad, Bangla Bass and also a remix of Bollywood tracks like  Dum Maaro Dum and the Sound Trippin produced Tung Tung, which the audience enjoyed immensely. 

 Star Night with Mohit Chauhan

After the first day that featured Papon and the East India Company, the closing act of Hindu College’s Annual fest Mecca 2014, was all about Mohit Chauhan.

The popular singer of Silk Route fame, came on stage at quarter to six and the crowd went crazy. He started the concert with his Rockstar single, ’jo bhi main kehna chahoon’. Even in the first song, he made sure to interact with the audience making them go ‘ya ya ya’ in order to match the lyrics. Maintaining the romantic mood of the song, he went on to sing ‘Kuch khaas hai’ and then Yeh dooriyan followed by Tum se hi from Jab We Met.

Oodles of food

So many performances and so many activities do definitely leave our stomachs growling a bit. However, the numerous food and beverage stalls at Mecca indicate that the coordinators of the event had already foreseen such hunger. Making it an essential condition to avoid the embarrassment of Mecca 13’s lack of food joints, the Organising Committee seemed to really prep up the event this year around.

The cluster of food stalls in and around the Cricket Tree (C-Tree) had been converted into one of the major hangout spots of the festival. From the street favourites, Bhel-puri and chaat, to extensive preparations of Kathi Rolls and Shawarma’s, to elaborate wholesome lunch meals, the food stalls seemed to offer something for everyone. Yes, there was ice cream, a variety of popcorn and ‘Bangs‘ of flavour as well.

Informal Events

Apart from playing host to several major competitions, Mecca also included some informal events to engage the heavy traffic present at the college. These events, such as Face Painting, Paintball and Lazer Maze brought out a lighter side of the festivities.

Lazer Maze, a beat-the-clock gaming concept by the Start-up company Ent-Innova, involved an intricate heist mission, with its simple design creating quite a buzz around the college campus. The organisers were pleased with the response, considering their respective events were held at the same time as the major competitions. Paintball however, did not get the desired response as the Hindi lawns remained relatively deserted throughout the fest.

Highlights of Jesus and Mary College’s Montage 2014

Jesus and Mary College held it’s annual fest, Montage, on the 20th and 21st of February. The tagline this year was ‘Bigger, Bolder, Better’, but many were left slightly disappointed as Montage didn’t rope in any big ticket celebrities this time.

Star Night with Nasha

The star attraction on day one was the concert with Akhil Sachdeva and his band, Nasha. The sufi rock band originating from Faridabad is popular among youth for their soulful tracks. Their performance slowly amassed a good number of people, with the crowds swaying to popular songs like ‘Main tenu samjhavaan ki’, songs from bollywood movies like ‘Aashiqui 2’ and ‘Ajab Prem ki Gajab Kahani’ and even their own compositions like ‘Nasha’ and ‘O Mahi Ve’.
