Confluence 2016 at Hans Raj College: Events and Highlights

Confluence’16 was an alloy of three different festivals by Hans Raj Student’s Union in collaboration with HT City Youth Nexus and the North East Cell of the college. It was a three day event, from 18th march to 20th march. Being very close to mid semester breaks, the turn out on the first and the second day was a little disappointing. However, a huge number of competitions were organised in both, the competitive and non-competitive category. Confluence’16 in collaboration with HT City Youth Nexus was a melting pot of popular DJ’s, who graced the fest one after the other. The fest made sure that all who made it, made most of it.

Day 1: Rockonova, Sumit Sethi and other events

Day 1 of Confluence’16 was inaugurated by the Principal of Hans Raj College. This was followed by a Kavi Samelan presided over by poet, Vineet Chauhan. He included topical events like the JNU row in his speech while addressing the audience.

hereafter, a choreography competition organised by Terpsi Chorean, The Choreo society of Hans Raj College also took place. The Choreo society of Hindu College bagged the first position for their performance called ‘vengeance’. LSR and Gargi college were declared second and third, respectively. 

Meanwhile, on the outer stage Youth Nexus hosted events like the Rockonova, a battle of bands. Out of the four shortlisted teams who participated, Knight Shades from DCAC won and Muffils from Manav Rachna Institute of Technology were declared the runners-up. 
Students from Hans Raj College walked the ramp for the Rigo Fashion show in the presence of Mr Arjun Gehlot, Director Ambience Mall and his wife, Shahista Gehlot.

A western group dance competition was also organised under the banner of HT City Youth Nexus, which was judged by Priyasha Bhardwaj, The Director/ Choreographer of Beyond Routine and Aditya Dogra. Misba, the Western Group Dance society of SSGGS won the competition whereas, Funk in Motion, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology and Enliven, Gargi college secured the second and the third place respectively.
The evening closed with performances by Suryaveer with his band EHSAAS, Dastak- The Band and DJ Sumit Sethi.

Day 2 Western Solo Dance Competition, DJ Suketu, Electro Sufi and others

The day started with a corporate discussion session by KPMG. This was followed by a talent show under the banner of Youth Nexus. Pushkar Chauhan and Asma from Hans Raj College who won the talent show were declared Rajnigandha Mr and Miss Pearls. A model hunt was also organised by Numero Uno. Shristhi from JDMC , Shubham from Dayal Singh College and Sanjeev from Manav Rachna International University, who were declared the winners are going to present Numero Uno’s spring summer collection in HTYM Fashion Show and will also get a personal professional photoshoot.

A western solo dance competition was also organised by Oorja, The Western Group Dance Society of Hans Raj College. Manpreet Singh from SOL won  and Vidhi Maheshwari from Hansraj College stood second in the competition.


On the outer stage, I Vogue, the fashion society of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce was declared the winner while Dyal singh’s fashion society was declared the runner up of Lava Show Stoppers.

Day 2 of confluence was a quite a music and dance paradise, which had around four artists performing for the evening.
DJ Ajay Nautiyal opened the evening to dance with his music. He was followed by Electro Sufi: Shahid Maliya with DJ ARKANE who took over the evening with quite literally a storm. Even after a spell of rain, dance and music did not stop. Sooner DJ Suketu took over the evening and played popular remixes of songs like Sooraj Dooba hai from Roy, Tu Meri from Bang Bang and Give me Everything by American rapper Pitbull.

Day 3: Honey Singh, Indian Ocean, Western Group Dance Competition and others

The day started with a western group dance competition organised by Oorja, The Western Group Dance society of Hans Raj college. The competition was judged by Tanya Suri,a professional jazz dancer, Anmol Jamwal and Mohit Raj Thapa. Out of the fifteen participating teams, Misba The Western Dance society of Sri Guru Gobind College of Commerce won the first place in the competition. Tanz, Miranda House stood second.

A street play competition was also organised by HT City Youth Nexus. Navrang,The Hindi Dramatic Society of Institute of Home Economics who won the competition had performed ‘Na Idhar Ka Na Udhar ka’ a play based on the problems of middle class. Ijaad from PGDAV evening performed ‘Panch sitambar’ and were declared the runners up.
This was followed by a North East Festival organised by the North East Cell of Hans Raj College. The event show cased the culture of not only the North Eastern states of India but included Ladakh and Tibet.
Immediately after the NE fest, fans started pouring in huge numbers for a guest appearance of Yo Yo Honey Singh for the promotions of his upcoming movie, Zorawar which is due to release on 6th May. Though the humongous crowd created trouble, Hansraj Student’s Union managed the situation well. Honey Singh gave the audience their much deserved time and tracks and left the stage for Indian Ocean to take over.


Indian ocean, as a part of Coke Studio played their quintessential soulful music and closed the three day annual cultural festival Hans Raj College.

SRCC and Shivaji College’s nukkads steal the show at Nexus; HRC wins Battle of Bands on Day 1

After much hustle and bustle, Nexus-The Annual cultural fest of Sri Venkateswara College kicked off on 3rd March 2016. Commenced by a ceremonial inauguration, many events unfolded simultaneously on Day 1.

The highlight of the day was the event called- ‘Madari’, organised by Anubhuti, the street play society of Venky. A competitive event, unrelated to the main Nexus events, it grabbed the attention of the audience with powerful themes. With 12 participating teams, the theme of the event was ‘Out of the box’. From religion to mental illness, various ideas were explored by the teams with The Dramatics Society of SRCC emerging as the winner, while Vyam and Ibtida of Shivaji and Hindu College stood second and third respectively.  

On the dance front, Mudra, the classical solo dance event organised by Nrityangana society saw some breathtaking performances by 8 participants from different DU colleges. Tejasvini Sharma of  Hansraj college was adjudged the winner while Raghav from Venky won accolades and the second spot in the competition.

 

While classical beats entertained people, Riyaaz, the Semi Classical Solo vocals event, was adjudicated by Mr. Avinash Kumar, a famous Hindustani vocalist, Dr. Priyanka, Professor of Political Science Department, Sri Venkateswara College and Dr. Yadav, Professor from the Hindi Department. Dhruv Pargai from Indian Institute of Information Technology grabbed the winning spot while Madhulika Panday from Faculty of Music, Delhi stood second and Rambhajan Bedi from Zakir Hussain College stood third. 

Moving from the classical to the western front, Western Vocals Trio, organised by Crescendo, the Western Music society, enthralled the fest comers with foot tapping beats. Judged by Dr. Deepti Sharma, Department of Chemistry and Mr. Prabhtoj Singh, 5 teams participated out of which Gargi College stole both the limelight and the first position, with KMC and CBS ending for a tie for the second spot. 

Among the myriad number of events, some engaging informal events like ‘On the spot photography, Treasure hunt, Beat Boxing and English Debate also took place.

Day 1 at Nexus came to a closure with the Battle of the Bands and Choreography competition. While The Hans Raj Projekt grabbed the first position, Night Shades from DCAC were adjudged as the runners up for Battle of Bands.

After much ado, Srijya, the Choreography society of Hindu college and Terpichorean, from Hansraj bagged the first and second position respectively in the Choreography event, which was judged by the director of Dance Buzz, Mr.Amit, eventually drawing curtains to the Day 1 at Nexus.

Tarang ’16 at Lady Shri Ram College for Women: Highlights and Events

Lady Shri Ram College for Women hosted its Annual Cultural Fest, Tarang ‘16 from 5th to 7th February, 2016. Amidst a huge footfall on all three days, the star catches of the event were performances by East India Comedy; Jochen Miller, the first international performer in LSR’s history and the band Agnee for final showdown on day three.

Day One: Inauguration, Indian Music Competition and East India Comedy with The Local Train

Day 1 began with a series of events and competitions ranging from the quiz competition and photography exhibitions to informal events and tote bag painting sessions. Among the formal events were Women Development Cell’s, Lutalica, following the concept of soliloquies which was won by Neha Diwan and Simran of LSR.

The Indian Music Society hosted Malhaar, the classical solo competition and Sugam, the semi-classical/light solo competition. The first prize in the classical solo category was claimed by Alish Mohan of Hindu College. In the semi-classical category, Gurdit of GTBIT bagged the first position.

The other events spread across the campus were photography competitions: Emakimono, Projektions, Spot On and Kairos. Projektions was won by Alex Arthur of SRM and Ishaan Sengupta of Motilal Nehru College. With these, a parliamentary debate competition, Stage Play Competition and Hindi Poetry Competition was also hosted. Informal events like ‘Taste test’, ‘Beg borrow Snap’ and Art Exhibitions managed to gather a huge crowd.

The highlights of the day were performances by East India Comedy and the band, The Local Train. Sourabh Pant and Sahil Shah of the former led the crowd into an almost-hysterical fir with their witty remarks on names of DU Colleges and how the canteen in LSR needs to be called Cafeteria. The Local Train played the tunes of their compositions like ‘Aaoge tum kabhi’ and ‘Bande’, drawing the curtains for day one.

Day Two: Battle of Bands and Choreography Competition

The Indian Music Society kick-started day two with the Indian Music: Choir Competition. A total number of 23 teams participated out of which 11 were shortlisted for the final round. The first position in Indian Music (Group) category was bagged by Hindu College.          

With this, Projekt, the photography society of LSR held the Silent Film Making Competition, Musidora. ‘Tangent’, of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College was declared the winner. The Quiz Society hosted The India Quiz where Apratim Chandra Singh (St. Stephen’s College), Jayant Verma (Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies), Bishal Kumar (Department of Buddhist Studies, Delhi University) won the event.

The Battle of Bands, on purely western format and ‘Amalgam’, Fusion Band Competition were a huge attraction. Amalgam was won by The Hans Raj Projekt of Hans Raj College, while Kirori Mal College’s High Time claimed the first position in the Battle of Bands.

Mudra, the Classical Dance (Solo) Competition was also held in the auditorium which saw a total number of 24 participants. Annanya of Daulat Ram College was declared the winner in this category.

 

As the Sun closed the horizon, one could observe long queues of spectators outside the auditorium, awaiting the Choreography Competition, Izraz. A total number of seven teams participated in the event which was eventually won by Srijya, the Choreography Society of Hindu College which rightly gathered the maximum praises from the jury and audience alike!

The most awaited event of Day 2, the EDM Night brought with itself a huge footfall where the ground was witnessed to by jam-packed with enthusiastic audience. DJ Sameer, Aerreo and Jochen Miller’s foot-grooving beats ensured each person in the audience was left enthralled and ecstatic.

Day Three: Fashion Show, Western Dance Competition and Star Night with Agnee

Day three at Tarang ’16 started with exhibition of drama skills at ‘Nukkad Natak’, the street play event. ‘Pitch Please’, the Western Music Competition on Acappella format saw 15 teams participating. The auditorium reverberated with beats and musical notes as the teams performed their pieces meticulously. Kirori Mal College was declared the winner of the event.

Along with Pitch Please, the fashion show competition Anarchia- Breaking Stereotypes took place. The competition witnessed a participation of 7 teams, with the winner being Hans Raj College. There were many other events like TV Show Quiz, Turncoat, and Elocution. The Indian Music Society also hosted a duel competition called Jugal Gaayan.

While most events culminated before dusk, the Western Dance Competition, Daila continued till early evening. This was one of the most awaited events of the entire fest, a fact which was evident by the long queues that waited for entrance into the auditorium. Misba, the Western Dance Society of Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce claimed the first position. Their performance was acclaimed both critically and by popular opinion.

Following the western dance event was the Star Night where the band Agnee performed their popular songs like Aahatein and Yaariyan. A performance that was equally mesmerizing and enthralling, the three day extravaganza Tarang 2016 ended on a musical note and with zeal and happiness dripping from the faces of union members and faculty of the college.

KMC and HRC start day 3 of Tarang 2016 with a win

Day 3 of LSR Tarang 2016 started off on 7th February with a non competitive event, Nukkad Natak. A total of 8 teams participated. The jury consisted of Pallav Kumar, Director of Manthan, and Sonalini Kumar, Professor of Political Science.

Pitch Please, the Acapella competition opened with Ashoka University’s performance. The judges included the members of ‘Nouveau’ – Sherry Matthews, Ritwik De, and Subatra Kamat, who work together in a music initiative called ‘Nouveau’. The last judge was Apoorva Gandhi. 15 teams participated in the competition, and it was hosted by the Western Music Society. The winners of the competition were Kirori Mal College with Sri Venkateswara College and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies as runners up.

The judges said that every team had their unique style, and performed well. Special mention was given to teams from Amity University, DTU, and Delhi College of Arts and Commerce.

Along with Pitch Please, the fashion show competition Anarchia- Breaking Stereotypes took place. The competition witnessed a participation of 7 teams, with the winner being Hans Raj College. The judges of the competition were Kamla Bhasin, Vikramaditya, an LGTB rights activist and Ms. Ishita from the Department of Sociology, LSR.

There were many other events like TV Show Quiz, Turncoat, and Elocution. The Indian Music Society also hosted a duel competition called Jugal Gaayan.

LSR gears up for Tarang ’16

One knows that the fest season is nearby if you clear either one or all from the following checklist – diving into your wardrobe to find out that perfect outfit for the day, making an array of phone calls, desperate for arranging that one pass for a hassle-free entry, and spending a sizeable amount of time strategising, “Of course, I will manage to find my way through the crowd and shake hands with the pro-night star. Right?”

The fest season has finally arrived and it’s time to equip ourselves because it promises to be greater and grander. In the season of firsts, Lady Shri Ram College for Women’s Tarang ’16 deserves special mention – for those who aren’t sure why, it was the first inter-college fest organised in the University of Delhi. Find some warmth this winter weekend as LSR brings to you a cultural extravaganza on the 5th, 6th and 7th of February.

With events ranging across dance, music, drama, photography, quiz, elocution, creative writing and debate amongst others, Tarang has received an enormous amount of registrations so far and they continue to pool in as we inch closer to the fest. All competitive events are a striking mix of conventional and unconventional, and the attempt is to cater to diverse interests. Tarang has an exuberant list of artists for its pro-nights of which DJ Sameer, Jochen Miller and Aerreo are set to perform on day 2, and Agnee for day 3. Informal events will also be held across all three days, through which one can not only enter the fest but also experience the good vibes.

With the pre-Tarang events and contests doing the rounds across social media, the excitement is surely kicking in. A series of crossword contests were recently held, the winners of which were given passes for all three days! The days to follow will bring with them more such opportunities. With over 150 colleges invited, this is the first year of Tarang going national.
