Jamia Millia Islamia has announced it will resume student union polls within 15 days of approving the Student Union’s constitution. However, the students have rejected the proposal, calling it unclear and vowing to continue the stir until all demands are met.

On October 26, 2026, an order issued by the Registrar, Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, stated that Student Union elections, suspended since 2006, will resume. The election will be held within 15 days of the approval of the Union’s constitution. The administration has also ordered the withdrawal of disciplinary action and the inquiry by a committee into alleged excesses by security personnel. Moreover, all the show-cause notices issued to students during the ongoing protest will be revoked by the university.

The order holds a conditional requirement of certain actions to be met by the students, recording an undertaking by the students to issue  a public apology through a press conference for defamatory statements and bring down all the social media posts targeting the university administration during the protest with immediate effect.

This move comes as the administration held talks with the protesting students who had submitted a list of demands. However, the students have rejected the order, calling it ambiguous and maintaining that the agitation will continue until the demands are met through written assurances.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association said the order did not specify a definite timeline for the approval of the Union’s constitution or address the demand for the resignation of the proctor. The students maintain that constituting a drafting committee is insufficient without a definite election timeline and representation of students; thus, a lack of a fixed deadline remains a key point of contention.

The students continue to demand concrete assurances, a clear roadmap and written commitments to fulfil their demands.
