Students from 30 colleges in Delhi University will pledge to protect the Yamuna River on 18 October 2026 as part of a wider public participation campaign for river conservation.

Students from over 30 colleges under the University of Delhi are scheduled to join hands on October 18 to take a joint oath to clean and conserve the Yamuna River. This project is part of the ‘Main Bhi Yamuna Prahari’ campaign organised by the Government of Delhi to raise the level of participation in the cleanup work of the river.

This campaign was officially launched by the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, at Delhi University Sports Complex on 1 October 2026. The launch was also attended by Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh and DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh. During the event, the Chief Minister introduced an app, ‘Main Bhi Yamuna Prahari’, through which students, teachers, social organisations, and citizens can register themselves to participate in the campaign. The app serves as the primary registration platform for volunteers and is available for download by anyone wishing to join the initiative.

Speaking at the launch, Gupta noted that everyday civic practices contribute significantly to the river’s pollution burden, citing the immersion of puja materials, flowers, garlands, and damaged idols as examples. She called for sustained behavioural change alongside large-scale infrastructure investment.

Union Minister of State, Harsh Malhotra, highlighted that more than ₹3,000 crore has been allocated for Yamuna cleanliness, with the tender process for sewage treatment plants at 22 major drain outfalls completed and construction underway at 12 locations.

The campaign will be geared at mobilising citizens to participate in the restoration process by making environmental responsibility a collective public effort as opposed to official cleanup processes. Participating students have been asked to promote awareness about river conservation outside the college premises and make their families and community members practice environment-friendly behaviour.

Students wishing to participate in the 18th October pledge can register through the ‘Main Bhi Yamuna Prahari’ app.

Journalism has been called the “first rough draft of history”. DU Beat may be termed as the first rough draft of DU history. Ridiculous hyperboles apart, DUB knows fully well that the DU students have an insatiable curiosity to know everything. Conscious of this, DU Beat has been providing the DU students with what they need and demand – the truth.
