IPCW has announced student elections post their previous denial, overturning their former official announcement.
Indraprastha College for Women (IPCW) has officially announced that its student elections for the academic year of 2026-2027 will be held on 9th October, 2026. Following the previous dismissal of the elections for student union and departmental boards, IPCW will now conduct the elections under its ‘Festival of Democracy’ initiative.
Previously, the college administration had simply refused to conduct student elections, and no official explanation or justification had been provided by the electoral committee. The continual silence of the college had caused deep dissatisfaction and frustration among students, and they continued without any official student representation.
Speaking to DU Beat about the refusal, a student said,
The students were ecstatic and eager to participate but when the elections didn’t take place, we felt as if our voices were being shut off and that the gap that exists between the students and administration was only growing bigger. Furthermore, the biggest disappointment was when we were not given any proper reason or explanation for rejecting the election, even after consistent queries.”
Another IPCW student clarified that the presence of the Vice-President and Treasurer of the previous tenure had been very helpful. They spoke against this decision very strongly and had firm opinions which received a lot of traction by the fellow students. This alleged vocal discourse was actually effective and their voices finally reached the corners of the administrative buildings. However, the administration has not publicly disclosed as to why the election authorities reverted their previous decision and decided to keep the student elections next month.
An independent student body is essential for an effective system of communication. Speaking about the importance of a student body, an IPCW student commented,
When the student body works as the collective representative of the students, it becomes easier for the administration/faculty to hear our concerns and queries. We face many problems every day, and listening to every query individually is not feasible.”
Another student criticised the administrative decision-making, pointing out their lack of affiliation with DUSU, which they argued leaves the students with limited avenues for representation and welfare. The student further exclaimed that the teachers have a superior authority over college representation and that students are often required to attend insignificant and irrelevant guest speeches for attendance.
Some students also alleged that the refusal to conduct elections was a deliberate attempt to consolidate power and further exploit students. But, sustained student mobilisation and mass appeal for an independent electoral body, led by the former office bearers, eventually prompted them to reconsider and overturn their initial decision. Previous reports and student testimonials have also raised concerns about IPCW’s irregularities in the conduct of elections. Many struggles of proper representation and ideology-led politics have harmed the periodic electoral routine before as well.
Nevertheless, the announcement has been met with enthusiasm, accompanied by renewed expectations for greater welfare and betterment. As the date approaches, student representatives are preparing for effective campaigning.
At their core, student elections represent democracy at its grassroots, providing students with a fundamental avenue to exercise their right to representation, participation, and collective decision-making within an institution.
