SGTB Khalsa College’s internal exams fiasco

As the fest season draws to a close, it is time now for the internal exams to begin. The general practice at colleges in Delhi University has been to hold a 10 mark test for the students as a recap of the syllabus covered over the semester.


This year however, the administration at SGTB Khalsa College has decided to hold mid-semester exams, exactly like the semester end exams. Particular dates have been allotted to the students and the exam will be conducted across all courses at the same time. The idea behind this move was to ensure that the students take the test positively as opposed to earlier when many didn’t turn up for the test and continuously requested teachers to conduct a retest.

The weightage for the test also increases from ten to fifty. Many teachers in the college aren’t happy with the decision of the administration and feel that it defies the whole purpose behind having internal tests. Mr Saikat Ghosh from the English department says, “Earlier when students didn’t turn up, we had other ways to evaluate them. The whole idea behind holding internal exams is to continuously assess students over the course of the semester. With this move however, the purpose behind internals is defeated. It also adds to the pressure of the teachers and lessens the already meager number of teaching days in one semester. It simply isn’t sound academic logic.”  

The students too are stressed out about the approaching exams. Shreya Mago, a first year student from English Hons remarked that, it “unnecessarily adds to the pressure.”  A few however have different views. A first year student of Political Science feels that “more students will take the test seriously now as compared to earlier.”  
The tests will be conducted continuously over a course of four days, from 18th March -22nd March.  No other college has decided to hold tests in this manner. The college hasn’t come out with any official statement clarifying the reason behind such a move.

Lashkara ’16 at SGTB Khalsa College- Highlights and Events

Lashkara ’16, the annual cultural fest of SGTB Khalsa College started on the 25th of this month and culminated after three days on 27th February. The three-day fest saw a number of competitions and events. Here are a few glimpses of the fest.

Day 1- Inauguration, Stage Play Competition and Eastern Group Singing Competition

First day at Lashkara witnessed the principal and the union of the college, along with some other faculty members inaugurating the fest at the auditorium. This was followed by Abhivyakti, the stage play competition organised by Ankur, the dramatics society of SGTB Khalsa College. The event saw participation from various colleges including Hindu College, Ramjas College and Shivaji College, among others. The event was judged by actor, designer and director, Vandana Vashisht and Ravindra Tripathy, a known journalist and a theatre critic. Ibtida, the dramatics society of Hindu College emerged as the winner.

Swarang, the music society of the college, organised the Eastern Solo and Group singing competition. Both the events were judged by Prateek Narsimha, who is a leading vocalist of a popular world fusion band Raagleela. In the eastern solo category, Ramjas’ Rahul came first while Kshitija from Faculty of Music bagged the second position. In the eastern group event, the first position was secured by Institute of Home economics while Daulat Ram College and Kamala Nehru College secured the second and third positions, respectively.

 

Day 2- Street Play Competition, Western Solo Singing Competition, and Western Duo and Trio Singing Competition

Day 2 of the three day extravaganza witnessed Pratyaksh, the street play event organised by Ankur, the dramatics society of the college. The event was non-competitive, so as to give the opportunity to the teams to showcase various issues rather than battling it out for the title. Colleges including IPCW, Hans Raj College and Hindu College, among others participated in the event.

Swarang organised the Western Solo Singing competition and the Western Duo and Trio singing competition. The Western Solo Singing was won by Srimayi Ladagiri of Dyal Singh College (E) followed by Megha Khandelwal of Rajdhani College, and Samarth Mehta of SGTB Khalsa College, at the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. The Western Duo and Trio Singing competition saw teams from Sri Venkateswara College and GTBIT College sharing the first position, followed by another team from Sri Venkateswara College.

Day 3- Folk Dance Competition, and Performances by Jassi Gill and Babbal Rai

The third day of the Annual Festival of SGTB Khalsa, Lashkara, started with a folk dance competition. Several colleges including SGND Khalsa, IP College, Mata Sundari and Gargi put up performances. The first prize went to the girls of Mata Sundari College for their Gidda performance, followed by the Gargi College at the second position.

The afternoon witnessed two star performers namely, Babbal Rai and Jassi Gill, performing in front of the enthusiastic crowd. Despite the scorching heat of the sun, people seemed to enjoy their popular numbers such as ‘Babu Zimmedar’, ‘Bum Sutt Mar’ and ‘Deor Bharjaai’.

Srimayi Laddagiri, Dyal Singh College wins at Day 2 of Lashkara, the annual cultural fest of SGTB Khalsa College

Lashkara, the annual fest of SGTB Khalsa College, ran high as the day flagged off with the street play event, called Pratyaksh. The event was held at the Nukkad right at the centre of the college campus. For the first time, Pratyaksh was a non-competitive event with the aim of eliminating the rat race from amongst the teams, and promoting a greater understanding of the themes that each of the play represented. A total of eight teams, including Hans Raj College, Indraprastha College for Women, Lady Shri Ram College and others. The judge for the event was Mr. Ulas Samrath, an alumnus of the SGTB Khalsa College and the former president of Ankur, the theatre society of SGTB Khalsa College. IMG_4520 Swarang, the music society of the college also hosted their annual fest under the name, Syncopation. The fest saw Western Solo Singing competition and the Western Duo and Trio Singing competition on day 2 at Lashkara. The Western Solo Singing competition witnessed participation from almost 15 students, among which Srimayi Laddagiri of Dyal Singh College (M) bagged the first position followed by Megha Khandelwal of Rajdhani College, and Samarth Mehta of SGTB Khalsa College, at the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. IHE, Hindu and Maitreyi College shine at Lashkara’16, Khalsa College

Lashkara, annual fest of SGTB Khalsa College’s first day culminated today with the stage play competition Abhivyakti, by Ankur, dramatics society of the college. The first day of the three day fest saw many other events take place respectively arranged by different societies of the college.

Pinhole, the photography society of SGTB Khalsa showed a photo exhibition which was at display right at the center of the college premises, also popularly known as ‘Jannat’. Other societies such as Strokes, the fine arts society of the college showcased their exclusive pieces alongside the college’s flower garden, which one could see as soon as they entered the college premises. Strokes had also welcomed a distinguished artist who was being seen painting live, ‘the fire graffiti’, something which they claimed has never been done by anyone else in the entire world.

 

Among other major events, Swarang, the music society of the college held eastern music solo and eastern group competitions in the college’s main field. Both the events were judged by Prateek Narsimha, who is a leading vocalist of a popular world fusion band Raagleela. In the eastern solo category, Ramjas’ Rahul came first while Kshitija from Faculty of Music bagged the second position. In the eastern group event, the first position was secured by Institute of Home economics while Daulat Ram college and Kamla Nehru college secured the second and third positions respectively. ‘It was a beautiful experience for the society to organize and pull off such an event which witnessed some scintillating performances’, said Rajkanwar, Vice President of the society.

Among the very well-known societies of the university, Ankur- The Dramatics society of SGTB Khalsa college organized a stage play competition which enthralled the audiences to their core. Several performances including one of taboos associated with women won huge applause from the audience. The event was being judged by actor, designer and director, Vandana Vashisht and Ravindra Tripathy, a known journalist and a theatre critic.

SGTB Khalsa College organizes Gulzar Gali

Gulzar Gali was staged on 15th, 16th and 17th of October at SGTB Khalsa College’s central place (Nukkad).
It was a theatre based event, showcasing a montage of short stories and poems by the living legend Gulzar.
Mr. Gur Pratap, writer and professor in Hindu college, Amritsar was one of the dignitaries who attended the event.

Along with him, members of Khalsa’s management committee, principals of various colleges and many theatre professionals came to contemplate the evening.  The duration of the show was 1 hour 40 minutes and the audience stayed engrossed all through out. Theatre societies of various colleges of Delhi University and IP University also praised the efforts and spirits of the show.

The team was highly overwhelmed by seeing so much of support and warmth as their efforts proved to be rewarding.
