For the post festival celebrations of Renaissance – the annual cultural fest of Kirori Mal College, the star cast of Main Tera Hero visited the college for promotions. The much awaited event saw a turnover of around 3500 fans of Varun Dhawan and Ileana D’Cruz. The stars who were expected to arrive at noon, reached the college premises by 1:30 pm. But the wait seemed to prove worthwhile for the crowd by Varun’s dance performance right after his entry. He then asked the crowd to chant the name of his co-star from the film to welcome her on stage, and the fans willingly obliged.

Varun Dhawan then told his fans about his movie and his character ‘Seenu’. Seenu’s character, as defined by the actor himself is chichora and nautanki. He also delivered a few famous dialogues from his movie. “Jab main sheher chorh ke gya tha na? Mujhe poora sheher chorhne aaya tha.” On the audience’s demand, both the actors then danced on their song, ‘Palat’.

Dhawan also mimicked the famous wrestling champion, The Rock. The organizers had chosen five lucky girls from the campus to meet Varun Dhawan on stage. The stars also performed on ‘Besharmi ki Height‘, another number from Main Tera Hero. Bharat Jain, who has hosted most of the star events in Delhi University, hosted this show too. Bharat, on Varun’s request chose five boys from the standing audience to come up on stage and show their ‘besharmi ki height‘ in front of Ileana. Ileana, who received many ‘I love you’ confessions in various styles, told DU Beat, “It was crazy to see fans showering their love on us. Delhi is insane.”

Varun then sang the famous Punjabi rap of ‘High Heels’, which he’d also sung at Shri Ram College of Commerce last year, for promotions of ‘Student Of The Year’.

Towards the end, he thanked the college principal, Mr. S.P Gupta by calling him up on stage. He also thanked the Union members for the organizing the event. Saurabh Prabhakar, the event head and Marketing Consultant for Main Tera Hero remarked, “The visit to Kirori Mal College was the best decision. The film and Varun, both have a huge youth connect and what better platform than Delhi University to promote a film.”

Varun was overwhelmed by the response in the University and said that he is ready to do anything for his fans.  The Main Tera Hero team was in the campus for almost 45 minutes. Ileana and Varun ended their session by clicking a selfie with all the fans.

Jashvender Chauhan, President of Kirori Mal Students’ Union, who was delighted by the student turnout for the event said, “After Gunday promotions and the main cultural fest Renaissance, this event also proved to be a grand success. Renaissance’14 came to a glorious ending. Our college will remember this year as the most memorable year of events. It was our pleasure to host their promotion today.”

Stay tuned for DU Beat’s exclusive interview with these two stars!

After long hours on the pitch of training and hard work, the Delhi University team managed to etch their names in history this year. With a string of great performances they managed to achieve something that has constantly evaded Delhi University in the past. The 3rd place finish in the All India Inter-University Championships held in Kerala is something that both the players and the coaches will remember for years to come. The team lost in the semi finals to Mahatma Gandhi University. Calicut University went on to win the competition. Apoorv Kakkar, a player on the team, said that “Next year we will aim to do even better in all competitions.” Before this extraordinary feat at the All India competition, the team kept the DU flag on top with a third place finish in the North Zone competition held in Patiala. Shashank Mamgain was adjudged best striker of the tournament. The fact that it was a young squad only added to the glory and pride. When we asked the players about the experience, they told us that it was a great opportunity and the exposure really benefited them. In terms of support from the University, the response was not as enthusiastic as there were problems in terms of daily allowance and financial assistance that players had to face. The selection process for the University team was one that the players thought was fair and one that ensured that the best players got selected.  All in all it was a year to remember for the team and the players are looking forward to bettering their performance in the years to come.

Come summer and the hunt for internships begins. With two months at one’s disposal, internships can be a constructive way to  spend this time (at times with monetary rewards). Full- time or part-time, before you head out with your internship search party, here are few things that you should keep in mind:

Have a one-page CV ready

That CV is one of the most crucial elements of your internship application. Customise it for the role that you are applying and make sure your strengths are highlighted. As the popular notion goes, it should ideally be a one-page CV listing your work experience, academic record, awards, skills, student leadership and relevant co-curricular activities (yes, you being the tennis champion of your locality isn’t relevant for a sales job).

Apply first for the job and then for the brand

If your passion lies in corporate communications, then having a sales internship in Google shouldn’t be a priority. Yes, it is Google and is a fancy name to have on your CV. But the profile is not your thing. Move on.

Small teams mean more experience

In the age of MNCs and corporate dominance, don’t aim to work in that swanky office with unlimited food and coffee. It is a great place to network and build contacts, but in terms of job responsibility you might not get a lot of opportunity. With the start-up culture in boom, working with an idea you admire can be interesting.

Think of the field

Think of the kind of field you would like to work in. Internships can also be a good way to figure out whether you enjoy working in a certain profession or atmosphere. Confused? It is okay to be confused. The solution lies in experimentation. Experiment with varied internships till you find your calling. For the more clear headed, work on growth in that particular field. Use your internship experiences to build a network.

Start that hunt

We have initialized you into the mental framework you need for that internship. What about the internship itself? Well, start that hunt. While there is a utopia around the idea of approaching recruiters, the action in itself is inevitable. You can either apply for organised internship programs that several companies release between January and April or create your own opportunities. Create a database of places and profiles you would like to work for, list their contact details and start contacting. Interested in working with a media house? Call, email (read spam), call and check – repeat this cycle until you get a response. Persistence is the key. You could also use portals such as LinkedIn in your hunt.

Internships in India require initiative

Sadly, a lot of internship opportunities in India turn out to be unpaid. This means that your presence actually doesn’t make a difference to the people in the office. But if you want it to make a difference in your CV, you need to make certain things happen. When in a media house, you could sit and send those two tweets a day, or take initiative, write a story and get it published. Remember one thing – it is okay to ask for work. Active and passionate candidates have higher chances of converting that internship to a job opportunity.

Wishing you all the best to secure that internship!

The National Service Scheme of Kirori Mal College in association with Loving India Foundation organised their event – Supath, 2014 on the 1st of April, 2014. To commemorate this event, Major General G.D. Bakshi gave an imposing speech on Nationalism. He said, “One should not feel or be like a second citizen in his/ her own country. It is very important for all of us to be proud of our nation.”

Shourya Roy, Sidhant Sharma and Shashwat coordinated this event and conducted activities. Children from Chandrawal village and North Campus were invited to celebrate the event with the students. Activities such as Dancing, Painting and a Lemon Race were conducted for these children. The painting and craftwork done by these children were kept on sale.

Kavi Samelan was the next activity, wherein an open platform was given to all students for sharing their poetic skills. Alumni of Hans Raj College and Kirori Mal College also attended this event. As a small gift, clothes were given to these children.

” We are soon planning to distribute clothes and basic amenity goods on a larger scale compared to the distribution today. ” said one of the coordinators, Sidhant Sharma.

The hip-swivelling goddess of pop hits, Shakira returned to American pop scene with her tenth self- titled album last week. The 37 year old songwriter and producer seems to be changing the course in her latest album after delivering some sensational hits like ‘Hips Don’t Lie’, ‘Whenever Wherever’ etc. The recent album boasts of collaborations with big names like Blake Shelton, Rihanna that makes the soundtrack interesting to look into.

The up-tempo lead single with Rihanna ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ might be perceived as a desperate attempt for a pop-hit and the duet with Blake Shelton ‘Medicine’ that works just fine. Dare (La La La) apparently the official 2014 World Cup Song is an outgoing song with a certain electro pop feel. It seems that Shakira tries to blend rock, reggae, pop, etc that signifies a sort of multiple influences that got into making this studio album from Shakira after four years.

The Columbian star does not put much ‘Latin-ness’ in the album but only two tracks in Spanish-‘Loca Por Ti’ and the Spanish version of ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’. There are a lot of personal influences on the album with tracks like ‘23’ which she wrote for boyfriend Gerard Pique and ‘The One Thing’, the mid tempo pop track written for her son Milan. She also sings about spite in relationships in tracks like ‘You Don’t Care About Me’ and ‘Cut Me Deep’ featuring band Magic.

The Grammy winning Latin pop star falls short of fulfilling the expectations we had after her charismatic and edgy tracks but provides a sense of fulfilment when considered in the range and blend of different music genres. The lyrics lack emotion and depth and the album on the whole leaves us with ambivalent reactions and discontented with an album coming after four years.

Lily’s words from the grand finale of one of the most successful TV shows of all time accurately describe what every HIMYM fan is going through right now. But for how the finale episode unfolded and what it held, Lily’s exclamation is not my favourite quote from it.

“Do you know who the gang is to me, Lily? Here’s what the gang is: The gang is a married couple who I never see anymore about to have a third kid, it’s my ex-husband hitting on slutty cops right in front of me and it’s the guy I probably should have ended up with, with the beautiful mother of his child. Who in their right mind would call that group of people ‘the gang’?”

If anyone could punch realisation on our faces as hard as it did, it had to be Robin. For years, the gang remained a not-so-happening affair. Robin was cornered in the show for years because of her frequent travels. Are these 5 really the 5 we knew? How did they get from sharing their happiest moments together at MacLaren’s Pub to this?

The viewers of How I Met Your Mother have all fallen major victims to the what we wish could be called the most cruel April Fool’s joke ever. The wedding, Barney and Robin’s wedding, around which the entire of the final season was woven, ended in a divorce. The mother of Ted’s children, ‘the one’, the beautiful woman everyone was crazy about with the yellow umbrella, died.

We all know how much can happen in just one year with this gang, don’t we? What happened in the 3 years Barney and Robin were married? How could Robin choose her job at WWN over her wedding? What happened in the 6 years between Tracy’s demise and the time Ted showed up at Robin’s house with the blue French horn? Nothing? That’d be one hell of an awkward show-up! The creators promise to release more video in the DVD.

One character I specifically feel sad about, apart from Tracy (the mother), is Barney Stinson. Robin had earlier betrayed him when she was dating Kevin in Season 7 and had promised Barney to come clean in front of Kevin about her having feelings for Barney, under the impression of which Barney broke up with Nora. Robin didn’t do so. In the series finale, Barney can be continuously seen cringing at the name or sight of Robin because of their failed marriage, which was revealed early in the episode. “Look, I know there was a time when it seemed like I was capable of going the distance, but if it wasn’t gonna happen with Robin, then it’s just not gonna happen with anyone.”  Among all the loose ends the creators of How I Met Your Mother have left, why Barney’s romantic life was the only one that did not end well, is the most maddening one.

All in all, the series had had all of us laughing, crying, taking sides and also taking dating lessons from Barney over 200 times ever since the show premiered in 2005. It has taught us to value friendship over every other thing because it’s what keeps us going. It has become a cultural phenomenon. For the Playbook, Ted’s driving gloves, the Bro Code, Robin Sparkles, the 8 slaps, Robin’s locket, the mystery of Barney’s occupation, Linus’ Kennedy package,  the yellow umbrella, the blue French horn, Ted being left at the altar and the shattered bottles of Glenn McKenna, let’s all raise one final toast!
