Let not the quality of one’s skill be dampened. After the deceptive CBSE results, an english hons. entrance test is unarguably the need of the hour to induct meritorious students into the University.

Well….I partially agree with this petition, but the point of the matter is that the points which have been mentioned above not only applies to English (Hons.) in particular but to almost all the subjects. Ask anyone who studies in DU and he/she will definitely say that CBSE curriculum has hardly helped them. These points shed light upon the larger issue of “credibility of our school system” and that of Board Exams in general. What I demand is some sort of stability, i.e. either maintain the importance/hype of Board exams by sticking to the current format, or just do way with this horrendous system altogether, like various PG courses have a minimum qualifying percentage and then one has to give the entrance exam. Having this (the one mentioned in the petition) middle ground is simply stupid. Think of those people who don’t do anything but study in order to secure ‘good’ marks , what a rip-off for them. Unfortunately our school system only encourages this kind of learning, like the petition mentioned ‘rattafication’ of knowledge. And our school curriculum hardly impart students with what people call ‘critical ability’ which is an essential part of English Hons. Then how can we expect students to have any sort of literary skills/critical ability when our school system doesn’t provide us with any ! We cannot rectify the problems in the bottom of the pyramid until and unless its upper parts are cleansed. Change the school system, introduce a kind of syllabus which makes a student critical of his surroundings, equip them or at least create an atmosphere where a child can become critical and then introduce entrance exams. My problem is not with entrance exams but with the fact that most of them are just not equipped to tackle those entrance exams. Just take this hypothetical example of mine— Imagine a child giving an entrance for a film making course in a place where films are not shown!!! The only way he/she could access films is by having certain ‘resources’/jugaard which in turn is related to your economic status.

a great final attempt. i too have tried to work on this in my own small way but it seems that th authorities are all sworn to impractical and unjust selection. i wonder how far can the renowned DU maintain its level with such hasty and unwise decisions. the level of education can only fall if the boards marks of the students are what they rely on. all the subjects require a test, more os english due to the difference in the curriculum from the school level. this is really funny how a few letters are held significant enough as opposed to the whole team of students and faculty.

Entrance Exam is the only way to check the true talent..
i agree that the evaluation criteria for selection of students in English Hons cannot be the same as examination method in CBSE. “Entrance Exam is the only way to check the true talent..

this uncalled-for move will further augment the undue stress given to Board exams results, which, we all agree, is not an exhaustive parameter to judge a candidate’s ability, least of all with reagards to a thoroughly non-objective field of study such as literature. Besides, it also gives candidates a peep into what lies ahead for them should they go ahead with the course or decide otherwise.
I moved from having just an ok percentage in 12th to being the second topper of DU (For the record – in M.A. English, 2007), thanks to the entrance which gave me a chance to pursue the course at a good college. CBSE marks are of no use when it comes to judging aptitude for this subject.

English entrance exams- the only transparent platform to showcase one’s literary skills and understanding.
