Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu addressed Kirori Mal College’s orientation programme, encouraging Delhi University freshers to believe in India’s institutions, opportunities and their own capabilities.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu urged Delhi University freshers to place their faith in the country’s institutions as well as themselves while addressing the orientation programme at Kirori Mal College on Monday.

Calling himself “a product of Delhi University”, Sandhu reflected on completing both his graduation and post-graduation in Delhi. “Whatever I have been able to contribute in service of the nation overseas was built on the foundation laid at Delhi University,” he said, urging students to have confidence in India’s institutions, opportunities and in their own capabilities.

The address focused largely on how universities play a huge role in shaping citizens rather than simply producing graduates. He described Kirori Mal College as one of Delhi University’s longstanding institutions and further said its legacy rests not only on academic achievements but also on the generations of leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, civil servants and artists that it has helped nurture over the decades. According to him, institutions earn distinction through the people they shape as much as the infrastructure they possess.

During the programme, the Lieutenant Governor inaugurated the Kirori Mal College Incubation Centre, saying that universities play an important role in encouraging research, innovation and entrepreneurship as India works towards its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

He went on to congratulate students and faculty mentors involved in publishing research papers under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), which he described as a sign of a healthy academic culture.

In the end, the programme brought together newly admitted students as they begin their journey at Delhi University, with Sandhu’s address centring on confidence, opportunity and the role of higher education in preparing students for the future.
