Many Delhi University colleges are period insensitive and provide sanitary napkins at irrationally high prices.

Hygiene issues in Delhi University is an ongoing problem. Stories of dirty and unusable washrooms in older colleges arise every day. Even though, many colleges have renovated and built new washroom facilities, disappointing incidents of lack of Sanitary Napkin facilities in colleges are observed.

Sanjana a student of Gargi College said “Health and education being primary features of development, providing the students with good and cheap medical facilities need to be a part of basic college infrastructure and not installing the vending machines and being charged 10 bucks for a pad, which are as basic as band aids is not acceptable.” Many students also reported that the medical room was closed when they had gone to buy Sanitary Napkins. Ramjas and Kamla Nehru Colleges both have only one vending machine each. According to a source in Ramjas, even though the machine situated in the Ground Common Room is functioning, the problem of menstrual hygiene is far deeper there because of lack of water supply in the girl’s washroom which makes it extremely unsanitary. While, the vending machine in Kamla Nehru College doesn’t even work.

According to a source, incidents of period insensitivity have occurred in Lady Shri Ram College where even despite having vending machine a girl was unable to purchase the pad since she did not have appropriate change and the nurse did not let her borrow some by saying that the girl herself should have kept a note of her cycle and not land in such a situation. Such comments depict the problematic approach of people to menstruation and how it is still not an acceptable and widely discussed issue.

Though, all hope is not lost, vending machines which sell pads for 5 rupees were installed in Daulat Ram College last semester as a result of prolonged and continuous student protest. Miranda House and Sri Venkateshwara College are also equipped with similar machines to provide pads. Working along these lines Shaheed Sukhdev College of Commerce and Hansraj College have also installed one vending machine each which are fully functional. These are examples of forms of healthy development towards a period friendly future for girls at Delhi University.

Read on to find out about the gem LSR’s Dramatics Society has created and why it is a play we must all go to see.

The Dramatics Society of Lady Shri Ram College has created a marvel in their street play, crushing the myths against people with disabilities, called Today’s Special. It takes you through a roller-coaster with its stellar acting, splendid music and inspiring story. In a few minutes it is able to encapsulate so many aspects of a person with disability’s struggle and how we as individuals have not just refused to acknowledge this, but also worsened it by humoring their hardships.

The play starts with a girl getting ready for a race, only for situations to reveal how she suffers from a problem in her leg, as the audiences’ reaction changes to silence, it clearly shows how in our daily life reactions are not much different. Why should she be seen different? Is a question that arises in our minds and continues when in the next breath the play depicts how in a school, little children draw people with disabilities as monsters, and not heroes.

The connotations attached to the people with disability do not end at ‘different’ but are also ‘villainized’. These negative connotations are not reinforced by strangers but also by their blood. One such scene shows how the sister of a person with disability, embarrassed by her sibling, locks him in a room on her birthday party to not be seen by anyone.

LSR’s play also talks about the provisions for people with disability. They show the seemingly negligible percentage of reservations in jobs, the constant running from one place to another due to the absence of infrastructural facilities and the pressure put by school authorities to put their children in ‘special’ schools. This brings forth the third connotation attached to the people with disability : they are ‘special’ or devyang. The question of whether these people should be put on a pedestal, whether they should be inspirational or godly is purely subjective and debatable.

Keeping in mind even their daily struggles are far greater and incomparable than what abled people must go through, their lives and endurance does become an inspiration for all of us. But for some, the idea of being ‘different’ could arouse feelings of isolation and alienation. Do they want to be seen as different? Do they want for no distinctions to exist? Do they want their struggles to be reflected in its true essence? Subjectivity arises in the spaces between these questions. More than our opinion, what matters is their own and for us to respect those.

Their sublime music also stands out in course of their play. The play takes a dig at the song “Ladki Aankh Maare” for its “Tusshar Kapoor ki awaaz mei..” which instantly puts light on the internalised and covert discrimination we are all guilty of. Whether or not we danced to this song since it came out or liked Tusshar Kapoor’s character in Golmaal, how many of us realised the grave insensitivity both carried? Or how we have laughed at Rani Mukherjee’s dialogue in the film, Black, “mujhe lagta hai baarish hone wali hai..”.

Today’s Special ends on a powerful and beautifully written aspect of sex and dating life of the people with disability. In a heart wrenching scene, it depicts the sexual assault of a girl on a wheelchair by her caretaker and misunderstands this as love. The thoughtless and insensitive comments and questions on the technicalities of sex by abled people to the people with disability is a scene which accurately depicts how sex has been made a taboo. While the last scene shows how a girl with a disability meets someone who brings her out of guilt and embarrassment, the audience is left with several thoughts of self-reflection.

LSR’s play is a movement. Authorities, film makers and we as individuals have failed the people with disability on several levels. Beyond a few tokenistic measures and facilities no tangible step towards their lives have been truly made. Shonali Boses’ “Margarita with a Straw” is one of the few gems which speaks their story and the possibilities of self-discovery, romance and so much more. But even though such films win awards, it fails to win hearts at the Box Office and thus remains few.

At an important time like this, where political parties are demanding votes, we should demand a change. Better facilities and infrastructure for the people with disability at schools, colleges, universities and other buildings, genuine and apt reservations at offices and other places, better laws are some ideas which can become a starting point in this journey.  As a society, we need a change of thinking and mindset. Emotions of shame, guilt or embarrassment should not be attached to the individual or his or her disability or their families. Now as for ourselves, we need to reflect on our actions towards the people with disability.  The ability to overlook the larger picture and simply laugh along comes from a place of privilege. While we have no control over how we are born, what we make of ourselves is what speaks volumes. And therefore, it becomes our prerogative to stand with the people with disability and to bring some sensitivity- that person may not be your sister or brother, mother or father, but is an individual in and of themselves and deserves this respect.

‘Work from home’ internships are gaining immense popularity among students these days, with an overall rise
in the trend of interning.

As soon as the semester break hits the block, all of us have two things on our mind – the initial socialising with
friends, and chasing after internships. The trend of interning has increased at a tremendous rate within the past
decade, especially in the Indian jobs’ sector. The rise of the ‘work from home’ internships has taken the market by storm.
What exactly is a ‘work from home’ internship?
A ‘work from home’ internship basically delegates the work and functional knowledge to interns who are not
required to come to the workplace every day. They can, as the term says, ‘sit at home’ and do the work at their
own time, pace, and comfort. This is a popular means of internship opportunity among students. First, because it saves a lot of time and money spent on travelling. While some companies prefer to reimburse the travel costs, it still gets to be a hefty affair. Second, with a ‘work from home’ internship, you have the liberty to decide on the duration of the internship as long as you want. With other internships, time is an important factor as the intern is required to report at the workplace and usually preferred during semester breaks. However, with a ‘work from home’ internship,
students find it easier to manage their college and career ambitions together.
Apeksha Jain, a second-year student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College comments, “I was in a ‘work from home’ internship in my first year when I interned during the semester. Since I am an outstation kid, I prefer being at home during the breaks. It was a very good experience for me, because I could manage my studies and society work along with the work delegated in the internship. I learnt far better this way.”
A lot of start-ups are considering and giving a boost to this form of an internship. While there are major opportunities in ‘work from home’ for fields like content creation and design, other fields like finance or human resource require the intern at the workplace. There are paid internships for students with excellent skills, giving them an added incentive, since they work and earn from an early age. A lot of the times, interns in an in-office internship are primarily engaged in running the errands: the stereotypical grabbing coffee, getting photocopies done, thereby gaining no real workplace exposure, resulting in a sense of demotivation towards interning among students. However, this scene is changing now.
Nikki Chaudhary, a student of Maitreyi College has been working with an educational company for a long time now. She states, “I enjoy working here. I can work at my own pace, but there are deadlines to be adhered to. It doesn’t cause a hindrance to my college schedule. I have got better with time management. I can sit, relax, and work at my own comfort. What more can I ask for!”

There is a huge demand for interns these days. There are user-friendly platforms, primarily for this exchange.
Platforms like LinkedIn, Internshala, and MonsterIndia, constantly update their websites with internship opportunities. Some companies also use the medium of social media to recruit interns.

Evidently, if you are willing to pursue an internship which ensures you are able to balance work commitments
and academics, ‘work from home’ internships are an ideal choice.

Observed every year on the 12th  January, this day is especially dedicated towards the Indian Youth. But what is the current situation of our country’s youth population?

National Youth Day is celebrated every year on the 12th January in India, which marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. He was a pioneer in crystallizing the spirit of nationalism, amidst the freedom struggle and introducing modern interpretations of Hinduism, in sync with the western philosophies surrounding the ideals with an enthusiastic representation of yoga, transcendental meditation, and other forms of spiritual philosophies across the west. His birth date has been celebrated as the National Youth Day ever since 1985, as a decision undertaken by the Government of India who felt that the philosophy of  Swami Vivekananda, and the ideals which he popularized, would prove to be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth. This year marks his 156th birth anniversary.

Vivekananda’s global influence has been immense. Way back when there were no TED talks or internet to clarify the Western perception for the East, it was his speeches, which gained him immense popularity, and significance in the western world. His speech at the First Parliament of the World’s Religions held in Chicago in 1893 was one of his most impressive speeches. It was an impressive breakdown of the ancient Hindu philosophy delivered with logic and scientific insights. Hence, he is known as the Messenger of Wisdom to the Western World.

One must wonder how does all of this correspond to his presence as a youth icon? Why does his birth date mark as a national level festival? Swami Vivekananda represented the imagery of an ideal youth or a youngster. In layman’s term, an ‘all-rounder’. He was a curious and keen reader of various different subjects ranging from science to philosophy, with a keen interest in Hindu scriptures. He was trained in music, and had excellent sportsman skills. He had a very balanced approach to live life, followed by logic, and not merely blind religion.

Every year, there is a change in the theme of the event. However, it is always youth-centric. This year, the theme is ‘Channelizing Youth Power for Nation Building‘. Yuva Diwas is also celebrated in Canada, through the Vedanta Society of Toronto, to spread the message of Vedanta, as the world’s most ancient theosophy.

We have frequently heard the term, ‘India’s Youth Are the World’s Future’, but how appropriate is this in our present context?

The Indian demographic provides for more than 600 million people below the age of 25, making it the only country with the highest youth population. However, the larger chunk of this population is not being utilized in a proper way. History is a witness to the fact that a large youth population definitely influences political movements. Take a cue from the civil rights movement in America, or during the Baby Boomers’ period when over 79 million people were born in the period between 1946-64. In the Indian context, the youth can bring a huge change. The freedom struggle was a majority of the nation’s youth, fighting for the freedom of our country. However, this enthusiasm in the youth today is eloping somewhere else, far away from the tracks of zeal. Despite the fact that India garners one of the biggest youth populations in the world, it still faces a massive unemployment gap. The young Indian workforce does not have the ideal jobs, lacks the required skills, or is not invested in a proper formal sector, with strict employment rules.

According to the recent statistics by the International Labour Organization, India has a very large vulnerable job share in the overall employment market. Out of the 1.4 billion jobs that are vulnerable globally, nearly 394 million or 28% are in India alone.

In Pawan Aggarwal’s research paper titled India’s Youth Challenge, published by Harvard International Review, he states, “India’s growing youth population need not be a blessing. What Arvind Panagariya fails to consider in ‘The Global Profession’ (Review, Winter 2011) is that India’s youth bulge and their galloping aspirations can be a recipe for disaster.”

The Indian GDP is reputable as the fastest growing economy in the world, but despite the 7.4% expected growth in real terms; India is not creating sufficient jobs. Despite the evidence that India has a big demographic dividend, it is still not able to compete with countries like China and Japan which are already facing problems due to aging population, creating a dependence on the state, and economic system for social security. The low employment levels worsen the situation with the problem of low wages. Indian employees are severely underpaid. With over 80% of the male Indian workers, and 99% of female workers making less than INR 10,000 a month, presents a grave picture of our economy and its job structure.
Arpita Chhikara, a business analyst at KPMG and a graduate of Jesus and Mary College comments, “The job market in India is at a very severe stage. The newspapers and the internet is filled with shocking revelations. I feel that the efforts towards mobilizing youth are not undertaken whole-heartedly. Take a cue from the rising levels of depression among the Indian youth for not finding the desired jobs, or due to being underpaid. There are no fairytales here.”

While, Apeksha Jain, a second year B.Com programme student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College comments, “The cut-throat competition is such a shocking factor. Despite having the most amazing professional qualifications, I see the youth struggling to find a good job. There is so much stress that surrounds them, which is unhealthy for their mental health as well.”

Despite the Government’s efforts, there have not been much tangible results. The government needs to encourage entrepreneurial efforts, which leads not only to self-employment, but also to job creation. Take a cue from the rise in the start-up culture in India, which has seen a massive growth. A NASSCOM research in India suggested the growth of almost 3100 Technological start-ups in India since 2010, with many more having risen in the recent years.

Hence, this Yuva Diwas, let us work towards a nation where the youth cluster is successful, and works to its maximum potential, instead of being the underutilized assets of the nation.

21st century has noticed many movements in food and dietary requirements. We explore the concept of veganism and why it is on such a popular rise!

You might be in the middle of a conversation when your eyes catch someone’s social media post wherein they declare, “I am going vegan.” You let that thought settle and with every breath, there is a lurking curiosity. What is veganism and why has it become a more mainstream food choice trend in the recent years? The vegan diet has, for a long time now, been clearly associated with boring salad bowls and alternatives to the meats. At times it is also confused with vegetarianism. Veganism is more than all of this. It is a philosophy, a way of living, which excludes all forms of exploitation and cruelty towards animals for food, clothing, and other purposes. It includes a healthy alternative to everything, even the dietary essentials like milk and other dairy products.

Veganism as a lifestyle option is on the rise, fairly due to its massive presence on social media, influencing the choices of the audiences. A lot of celebrities have opted for a vegan lifestyle. A lot of influencers regularly promote vegan choices and products. According to the recent statistics presented by BBC News, veganism has one of the highest web searches worldwide. With prominent celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian, Sonam Kapoor, etc. promoting it, it has gained a lot of attention. Some of the vegan foods are alsoknown to be gluten-free. Although these terms are wrongly used interchangeably, they are not the same. Gluten-free and veganism are considered to be similar when they are not. Gluten-free diets are also rising considerably. A gluten-free diet is necessary if you have a celiac disease, or are otherwise gluten intolerant. If neither of those conditions persists, then there is absolutely no reason to avoid gluten. Other misconceptions that circle the vegan choice are the ‘missing out factor.’ When you go vegan, you can still have your favourite foods, the only things you will be ditching are cruelty and cholesterol
that go hand in hand with using animals for food. As the demand for vegan food options is skyrocketing, companies are now coming out with more delicious meat and dairy free options that taste great, are healthier, and do not hurt living beings.

A popular argument against veganism is the fact that it is a luxury or an expensive diet. Tobias Leenaert in his book Vegan Strategist calls veganism a ‘first world luxury’. While a lot of people agree it is the transitioning which partakes to be expensive, it depends from region to region. While transitioning, faux meats will be more expensive than regular meats.Necessities like dairy are now swapped with plant based products. Soy milk, coconut milk, and creams are subject to regional availability, which is key to determining their price. Waiver in the supplementations one will require keeping the nutritional balance. Arpita Chhikara, a graduate of Jesus and Mary College said, “Being a vegan is one of the best choices. You know you are doing something incredibly good when you opt for a more healthy option that benefits all. At the end of the day, it’s our choices that really make or break us. This is my choice
and I love every bit of it.”

Delhi University to ensure centrally air conditioned campuses, due to the growing climate concerns.

Delhi University issued a statement on the 7th of January, 2019 that it will instal central air conditioners in all the college campuses. The proposal is set to be in motion from the new academic year (July onwards). On a trial basis, a few select colleges will have these installed. Depending on the affect or reaction of the college community, this measure will be taken on a full-fledged mode.

The reason, issued earlier, is the shifting climatic conditions. With the northern India witnessing a cold wave, it is expected that the summers will be as scorching as ever. Heena Garg, a student of Maitreyi College says, “The college infrastructure, especially the ventilation is a big problem in classrooms. The rooms are very stuffy and it creates a lot of problems in the hot summer months. The fans do not work properly. It results in a lot of discomfort among students.” A lot of private universities have already adopted the centrally conditioned system in their campuses. Infrastructure is still a major issue faced by a lot of Government or state based colleges.

Professor Yogesh Tyagi, the 22nd Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, expresses his views on this decision, “It is about time the Delhi University improves its infrastructural facilities. Addition of the centrally conditioned campus will be a major boost for the University and will benefit the students and staff.”

With the rising levels of pollution and lack of pure air in the Capital’s air index, a lot of households are also shifting to centrally treated air conditioning. Their growth in the Indian markets has been very restricted as compared to that of their western counterparts, where every house is already centrally conditioned. India is lagging behind in this lifestyle concern as its affordability is restricted only to the rich.

Apeksha Jain, a second year B.Com. student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College comments, “In a city which has such extreme climates, DU’s decision for central air conditioning is a really good one. it will improve campus engagement and attraction, and improve the existing infrastructural conditions of the university.” While some of the colleges in DU provide air conditioned classes to its students, the call is for a campus wide change for the better.

These twelve astrological signs constantly revolve in our lives. We figure out why people rely so much on astrology.

You must’ve come across certain stereotypical comments like, “she is so sensitive and moody, like a typical cancerian” or “he is so stubborn, like a typical Capricorn” or you may wake up early morning to find your grandmother sitting in front of the television, watching the week’s horoscope and vaastu, sharp at 7 AM. From centuries, we have been listening to the age old myths- your personality is deeply affected and related to your zodiac sign. For many who might be wondering, how does a constellation or astrological assumption determine their personality, aren’t a person’s individual interests and their genetics at role here?

Astrology is an elaborate system of knowledge which consists of many voluminous treatises of intricate calculations based on the position of the stars and planets and the inter-relation which exists between the various phenomena on Earth (including human life) and the heavenly bodies. Many deem astrology as a ‘pseudo-science’. However, in many cultures, be it the Indus Valley, Chinese, Mesopotamian or any others, it has a deep significance, and all of us at some or the other point, fall victim to believing in our behavior to be synced with that of our zodiac sign.

Diacus, Latin for zodiac, comes from a Greek work which means a circle of animals. Basically the term is used to describe the circle formed of twelve 30 ° divisions of the celestial longitude which centers around the path of the sun, ecliptic in structure. These zodiacs are further broken down into the planets or the elements which consist of or represent them. There are twelve zodiac signs, also known as the Sun signs. According to old scriptures, it is the time at which a particular person is born, and the cosmic alliance, which is a key factor in determining your personality. In religions like Hinduism, it is the kundli, a chart which is prepared showcasing your birth date, time, place, and indicating the 360?  zodiac was on the eastern horizon as from your place of birth, date, and time. It is considered important in astrology, and almost every household gets it made.

Apeksha Jain, a second year B.Com. programme student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College states, “Astrology is something which has always amused me. A lot of people criticize me for liking it, but it is my personal choice. I used to sit with my grandmother whenever she called the pandit over to forecast our horoscopes, and it always left me with a lot of curiosity. I used to spend my time reading about my zodiac sign, a lot. So I feel it’s a personal choice and so is the level of amusement you feel towards it.”

However, not everyone favours this age old tradition of astrology. Nikki Chaudhary, a student of Maitreyi College comments, “I have never believed in any of this. My family is deeply religious and they believe in astrology a lot. For me, it never appealed to me. How can my personality be determined through my zodiac sign? Millions of people were and are born on the same day as I am, but that doesn’t mean that we’re all similar simply because we share a zodiac sign. What annoys me more is how people try to justify their actions by saying it is the inherent personality of their zodiac sign.”

There is however, no scientific proof attached to this assumption. Over the years multiple studies have been conducted, and as such, there are very few or hardly any, which support this theory. Researcher Mark Mayberry claims, “it all comes down to what we want to hear. We all want to desperately believe in the magic of zodiac sings because we are fascinated by the thought of astrology and its ties to our personalities.”

A common discussion also springs up the topic of those, whose birth date falls at the intersecting point- the very beginning or the very ending of a particular zodiac sign assigned month. Will they share characteristics of both the zodiacs? If so, which would be the more dominant one? Anoushka Raina, a B.Sc Programme student of Miranda House comments, “my birthday falls in one of the last days of the Cancer zodiac. Does this mean my personality is a mix of both Cancer and Leo?” Hence, the sync between personality and zodiac sign gives us a sense of complacency. We can possess many different traits and a lot of the times they may not be corresponding to that of our zodiac sign. Is this a thing to be disheartened about, or shall we take it in a good spirit? After all, since there is no clear scientific evidence to their genuinity, let us all act and react in the way we like to!

21st-century lives are centred around emojis, making daily survival almost impossible without our handy yellow friends. We dabble a little deeper into the world of these feel-good caricatures and discover some problematic issues hidden behind their design and usage.

Emojis are an integral part of the text language today. With a plethora of different emojis being created every day, innovative human-like emoticons are no longer an anomaly. Their vast and varied usage has made them a business venture for many, a famous example being paid celebrity emojis like Kimoji,

While emoji’s most often if not always, accurately depict how we are feeling, there are problems that one may encounter while using them;

1. Degree of Smile

One of the earliest emoji’s, the smiley emoji, while simple in its usage and meaning, can prove to be a tricky emoji when it comes to choosing which one to use, as there are simply too many options in this genre of emoji. Analysing the correct amount of curvature in smile, to accurately depict the precise degree of happiness one is feeling, can prove to be a task.

2. Sexual innuendos

If there is one talent this generation is most underappreciated for, it is the ability to read in between the lines, and yes emojis also have a wide array of meanings attached to them, some of them not so innocent. The most commonly used ‘naughty’ emojis are the peach, cherry, and eggplant emojis. In the words of talk show host Jimmy Fallon,”eggplant emojis are the modern equivalent of spelling b**bs out upside down on your calculator”

Cautiously using these seemingly innocent emojis is advised, as their wrong usage may lead to unwanted attention and situations.

3. Choice of Heart

The emoji dashboard has a wide range of hearts to select from. Sending out the right heart at the right time is imperative to avoid confusion. We all come across that one enthusiastic person who cannot wait to fill the flow of conversation with hearts. Be it the romantic red hearts or the platonic blue ones, heart emojis are instant mood lifters. However, staying calm while using them is key to getting the desired response in return.

4. Nature and Other Stuff

The next range of emojis includes weather depicting emojis, flora and fauna, and the lesser used emojis, such as those of floppy disks, confusing building structures, and other ambiguous objects. While nature emojis tend not to be ignored, most obscure objects usually never see the day of light on chat screens, making their marginalization problematic, even if it comes from a place of ignorance of meaning.

Whatever the emoji, understanding its meaning, and correct usage is a basic life skill for a technologically sound human being of this internet obsessed generation.

In lieu of celebrating 25 years of F.R.I.E.N.D.S we take a sneak peek at our most organised characters of all times- Monica.

In the span of the ten seasons that rocked the TV industry in terms of its popularity and crisp set, the F.R.I.E.N.D.S cast has some idiosyncrasies in the characters, which we can all relate to at one point of time or the other. If there was one character that stood out the most has to be no one other than Monica E.Geller.

Here are a few pointers to let you know if you are secretly Monica Geller or not:

  • Organized Freak

You are obsessed with having things in order, prim and proper and neat, at all given times. You might be that one person, who has a label maker to ensure their cups are numbered, or the stationary is intact or the books are ordered in an ascending order! You love making divisions for everything. Be it your clothes in a pattern or an extravagant shoe arrangement. You’re a neat freak and a storehouse of almost all possible products to clean everything up.

  • Best Host Ever
