Established in 1956, Lady Shri Ram College for Women has grown from a shack in Daryaganj to a magnificent red building that houses 1800 odd women from morning to evening, and sees them through from prospectus to passing certificate and beyond. Here’s a glimpse into life at LSR, although most details are clearly mentioned on the college website www.lsrcollege.org.
Location
LSR is an island in the middle of South Delhi. Located near the Moolchand flyover, it is a rickshaw ride away from the Lajpat Nagar central market and the GK 1 M and N Block Markets. Although an isolated college in a bustling place, it is fairly well-connected to most parts of the city.
How to Get There
LSR is quite centrally located. Opposite bluebells school it’s just a short walk from GK1 and Moolchand. Students can get buses to Nehru Place or Ashram, both of which would drop the student near LSR. After which students are best advised to take autos till LSR. A metro station is being constructed right outside LSR, this would only enhance LSR’s connectivity.
Popular Courses
LSR is primarily an Arts’ college, although B. Com (hons) and B. Sc in Statistics are also offered here. Being an institution that is celebrated for academic excellence, all the courses taught here are very sought after with cut offs crossing 90% for many subjects. The best known of the lot, however, are Political Science, Economics, B.Com, History and English. The previous year’s cut off list is mentioned on this link to the college website. http://html.lsrcollege.org/cutoff.asp
Admission Procedure
General Category
While in many other places one has to deal with bureaucratized old men giving out forms and making reluctant efforts to help fill them, LSR is another world. Enter and you see cheerful student volunteers and colorful posters with every little detail mentioned on them. But at the end of the day, in this college (like everywhere else) the lines are long and the process is tedious and boring. Admission into LSR College is based entirely on marks secured by students in their board examinations. For elementary education, however, it is centrally managed by the university. Further, there is an entrance examination for students seeking to take admission into B.A. (hons) Journalism.
ECA and Sports Category
Admission into LSR through these categories is a long-drawn, complicated process. Students are first supposed to fill in separate forms, which ask for the usual CVs, portfolios, letters of recommendation, photocopies of originals, etc. To add to that, in the ECA form there’s an essay that applicants are asked to write. Loadshedding happens. A certain number of students are called for trials. The sports trials and interviews happen soon after the last date of submission of application forms; although the ECA kids have to wait till the beginning of July.
Infrastructure
LSR is perhaps equipped with amongst the best infrastructural facilities across the campus: A mostly-out-of-bounds seminar hall that is spectacular, another one that is its diametric opposite (read: easily accessible and not-so-spectacular), an auditorium that can do with some improvement in the light and sound system, projectors enough to screen about four films simultaneously in different venues (much like a theatre?!), an excellent library complete with access to some very good paid websites and a decent online catalogue, a well-equipped computer laboratory and a café that can beat most of its counterparts in the university.
Out of Station Students
Although the LSR Residence Hall is amongst the better known hostels, it doesn’t have a capacity to accommodate all outstation candidates who are able to secure admission into the college. As a result, there are several PG accommodations around the campus in areas like Amar Colony, National Park, GK 1 N Block, etc.
Add-On Courses
Apart from language courses, LSR offers a PG Diploma in Conflict Transformation and Peace Building. A few other courses are talked about in the prospectus, but they’ve not been taught for at least two years now, if not more.
