DU Colleges Will Not Reopen Until 100% Seating Capacity Allowed

Due to the DDMA (District Disaster Management Authority) not allowing colleges to operate at 100% seating capacity, a senior DU official has confirmed that colleges will not be reopened anytime soon.

On Tuesday 9th November 2021, a senior DU official said that the reopening of colleges will not be possible until DDMA allows 100% seating capacity across all colleges. Undeterred by protests taking place across the varsity for reopening colleges, the official maintains that a final decision cannot be made right now under the current circumstances.

How can we reopen until and unless the DDMA allows 100 per cent seating capacity. Sixty per cent of students of the university are from outside Delhi. We can’t ask them to come here, stay in a hostel and take online classes since only 50 per cent seating capacity is allowed.

According to the current DDMA guidelines-

  • Schools have been allowed to reopen at 50% capacity, with classes happening in a blended mode i.e. both online and offline.
  • Full seating capacity at cinema halls, restaurants, markets, malls are allowed

From 16th September 2021, DU had allowed final year undergraduate and postgraduate students to attend laboratory classes. Low attendance was recorded, amidst increasing pressure to reopen the campus for all as soon as possible. Student organizations like AISA, SFI have been organizing strikes and protests for the same.

Students have expressed their anger at the current circumstances time and time again. Colleges across the entire country have resumed functioning offline. Meanwhile, DU students feel disillusioned and disappointed at how things are turning out.

I’m disappointed, but not surprised. People are allowed to sit beside each other in metros and concerts. Does Covid spread only in classrooms? Is that why they’re not reopening the college? Every other state is working on this and slowly opening up colleges- except DU. We’re honestly tired of it.

However, a senior DU Official has mentioned that a meeting will take place 10 days from now to discuss reopening colleges.
