Dual Degrees are the new and unexplored educational opportunity in which students can pursue two degrees parallelly; one from the regular mode and the other from open and distance learning (ODL) mode.
The proposal to allow students to pursue two degree programmes concurrently was approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in May 2020. One of the degrees should be from the open and distance learning (ODL) mode if the other is from regular mode. This was a step taken to improve the career prospects of students while giving them the freedom to be able to study more than just one subject.
The year-wise recognition status of universities approved to offer education through distance mode along with the approved programmes is already in the public domain and can be accessed on the UGC website. The universities established in Delhi for distance learning include Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) with regional centres across the country.
I wanted to pursue both economics and Political Science. So, I enrolled in a regular Bachelor’s degree from Gargi College. But I soon realized that I also wanted to study the syllabus of Political Science major as it has more scope. Hence, I also applied for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Now, I am pursuing two bachelor’s degrees.” – Ananya Sethi, a second-year student at the University of Delhi.Ananya Sethi, a second-year student at the University of Delhi.
Another individual who is pursuing a Designing degree from Chitkara University, Chandigarh, and B.A. Hons. (Economics) from IGNOU talked to DU Beat and stated how she feels that a design degree along with the knowledge of Economics would bring better economic prospects for her career.
If one had to continue enlisting the opportunities created due to this setup, the factor of holistic development comes to mind. Students get to study a combination of any stream. For instance, one can study a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce along with a major in English Literature.
IGNOU is one of the largest distance learning universities in India with over 200 programmes that include undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and PG diploma courses. Despite the fact that the number of papers remains the same, IGNOU allows students to complete their degree in six years as opposed to the standard three years in regular mode. It conducts exams twice a year in June and December.
“The reading material is available in pdf versions or physical books sent to students. Though it took a long time for the books to arrive, the quality of the study material is commendable and competent even for UPSC aspirants.Kashish Shivani, Psychology Honours, IGNOU
The experience of open learning not only gives one the opportunity to plan and cultivate self-discipline but also when pursued with a regular degree, makes the student more competent.
