Delhi based student residence chain CoHo has failed to refund its residents’ security deposits even three months after evicting them in the middle of the lockdown.
During May 2020, hundreds of residents of CoHo, a coliving space company based out of Delhi, received emails asking them to evict their rooms citing issues with rent payments. Despite the fact that this demand came in the middle of a strictly imposed lockdown and a pandemic, students travelled to Delhi or made arrangements to vacate their rooms.
Post eviction, CoHo was supposed to refund the security amount and the extra rent to the residents, who are majorly students, but they have not done so, despite this being mentioned in the contract signed.
“I myself, like a lot of other people, have sent them masses of emails and texts and calls, but their employees do not pick calls or answer and on mail, one receives automates replies”says Anushree Joshi, a resident at CoHo Lajpat Nagar.
This situation is not limited to one or two properties, in fact, all four properties that were shut down are facing the same problem. The amount due to some tenants is as high as 60,000 rupees. While not refunding the tenants’ money, the company has been opening several new properties, as visible on their social media profiles.
Students have been constantly emailing the company for about a month now, but to no avail.
“They’re starting new properties, but have ghosted their previous tenants. Only about thirty percent of the people have gotten responses or refunds.”Anushree adds
Meanwhile, DU Beat approached CoHo for a comment, but they did not respond. To delay payments to what is rightfully the tenants’ in the middle of a pandemic is not only irresponsible, but suggests a harassment- especially in a situation where the tenants have already faced extreme hardships due to the eviction in such a time.
