A thing that brings all the aspirants of the University of Delhi in this country to a sense of fascination is the University’s engagement with the performing arts. With a plethora of opportunities in fields like dance, music, dramatic, students are exposed to the discipline and the adventure of the arts that interest them. DU Beat brings to you the first of the six installations of its analysis of the top society in DU. The hard work was persistent, and the competition heartening. Let’s delve into who made the cut and how.

Methodology

The best college society in each category was selected by creating a tally of the top 3 positions that could be won at various events. The society that secured the 1st position was awarded 3 points, the society that secured the 2nd position was awarded 2 points, and finally, the society securing the 3rd position was awarded 1 point.

33 college fests were considered in the making of the tally. The selection of these 33 colleges was based upon an analysis done by speaking with members of numerous college societies, and tracking the fests they considered most prestigious. The considered colleges are:

Top Three Positions

ECHO, the western music society of Jesus and Mary College, has won the best society accolade this time with 36 points. Euphony of Gargi College followed at the second position with 23 points, and the third position was tied between the western music society of Lady Shri Ram College (WMS-LSR) and Sound Machine of St. Stephen’s College with 15 points.

ECHO, the western music society of Jesus and Mary College, is known to be a colossal army of 22 talented and strong women who thrive to share every inch of their soul through their musical oeuvre.

Jannis Joe, President, expressed her delight to DU Beat-  “It’s been one hell of a ride, and we would happily buy tickets to it again. Leading this dream team has been a complete pleasure and honour. I’m so grateful to have such passionate members who not only put their heart and soul into our piece, but also do justice to our vision. Honestly, I never could have asked for a better platform to echo our love for music. Thank you for giving me a larger than life experience.”

“Every member has literally put her blood, sweat, and tears into the making of this piece over months of diligent perseverance, right from the arrangement, to every part and every harmony. Apart from the wins, personally, our chief momentous achievement was the success of teamwork and the complete cathartic satisfaction of expressing ourselves while living every moment of our experience through our music, knit together as one. Thank you for this journey on such a brilliant platform,” shared Sara Joseph, Vice President.

They added, “This fest season was absolutely amazing and memorable. We are deeply touched and humbled by the tremendous response we got this year, and would like to thank and congratulate all the other teams for putting on a good show and fighting the good fight.”

Every year, societies from colleges across the campus compete neck to neck and put up spectacular performances during the fest season. This year too, saw certain teams shine a little brighter than the rest. We bring you a series with college societies that put their heart and soul into their respective fields and took home the top prizes at various cultural fests.

The best college society in each category was selected by creating a tally of the top 3 positions at competitive events held during various cultural fests of this season. Whenever a society won the first prize they were awarded 3 points, for the second position they received 2 points and for the third position, 1 point was added to their tally.

For the Western Music category, Western Music Society of LSR scored the maximum points in the tally. Western Music Society of LSR’s 14 points were followed by Zephyr (Kamala Nehru College) that scored 12 points. Musoc (Kirori Mal College) bagged third spot scoring 10 points.

The Western Music Society of LSR

The society has been a consistent performer in the Western Music category. This year, their production was widely appreciated and applauded wherein they covered a Jazz Gospel number called ‘Come Unto Me’ by Take 6 and their own arrangement of Janelle Monae’s  ‘Electric Lady’.

Satwiki Adla, the President of WMS said, “The secret to our success is our dedication. We practice everyday diligently for 4-6 after college hours. Another strength of our society is also the understanding and love that we share for one another and the music that we make which binds us all together into a close-knit family. The ability to be able to work on our strengths while pointing out our weaknesses is something we strive to achieve at LSR WMS .”

Nine college fests were referred to while evaluating the top societies tally this fest season which were: Tarang, LSR; Ullas, KNC; Tempest, Miranda House; Montage, JMC; Mecca, Hindu College; Reverie, Gargi College; Nexus, Sri Venkateswara College; Shruti, IPCW and Confluence, Hans Raj College. The society emerged victorious at the following fests:

1st Position: Ullas, KNC; Montage, JMC and Mecca, Hindu College
2nd Position: Nexus, Sri Venkateswara College and Shruti, IPCW
3rd Position: Tempest, Miranda House

After jamming regularly in empty class rooms and missing classes, they went to their first inter – college fest at Jesus and Mary College where they won the 2nd prize in duet singing. This gave them confidence and since then, they’ve bagged positions in various solo, duet, trio singing competitions held at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Kamala Nehru College, SSCBS, JDMC and NIFT. On being asked about their influences, Vaibhav Singh, the Society President, cited that there are a vast number of artists, whom they follow. They started covering Boy Bands and then they progressed to Blues, Jazz and Country. He also mentioned Ed Sheeran, Zac Brown Band and Rascal Flatts as being a few of their major influences. When asked about their immediate prospects, he replied,” Firstly we would like to organize a western music fest in the college campus and would like registrations from major societies from various eminent colleges. Secondly, we would really like to uplift the name of our college.” He also mentioned that they want to be a well recognized society in DU. DU Beat wishes Allegro success for future endeavors! ]]>

Whenever a society won the first prize they were award 3 points, for the second position they received 2 points and for the third position, 1 point was added to their tally. In the Western Music (Group) category, Lady Shri Ram College for Women’s Western Music Society leads the charts with 13 points in total. Sri Venkateswara College’s Crescendo follows a close second with 12 points, while Jesus and Mary College’s Echo stands third with 6 points.

Western Music Society, Lady Shri Ram College for Women

Lady Shri Ram College’s Western Music society is well known for its acapella performances. Though they have covered a range of genres from Gospel to Indie music, their competitive piece is always a complex Jazz acapella arrangement. “We don’t practice for hours and hours every day. We just have a 1.5-2 hour practice session 5 days a week. But in that time, we make sure to channel our musical energies completely and make the most of our time. We are genuinely and truly fond of one another; we have the best times together as a society and as close friends. And coupled with our mutual love for music- it makes singing together a great experience”, shared the team. Performing Team Members: Kamakshi Khanna (President and Conductor), Abhilasha Sinha (Vice-President), Nolina Mishra, Kimberley Rodigues, Michri Thejaseno, Cindy Z Tlau, Anna Charenamai, Nandini Singha, Rhea Mahanta, Bhavya Kulshreshtha, Glory Salam, Varnika Prakash, Uttara Thapa M, Saakshi V Lama, Geyir Sora, Ankita Naik, Sanchia Thimanna, Sharanya S, Satwiki Adla. Note: The thirteen fests included in our analysis for this series include SRCC’s Crossroads, Gargi College’s Reverie, Sri Venkateswara College’s Nexus, LSR’s Tarang, Hans Raj’s Confluence, I.P. College for Women’s Shruti, Daulat Ram College’s Manjari, Hindu College’s Mecca, Jesus and Mary College’s Montage, Miranda House’s Tempest, Kamala Nehru College’s Ullas, Kirori Mal College’s Renaissance, SGTB Khalsa’s Lashkara. Out of the fests listed, only 8 had conducted a competitive Western Music (Group) competition.]]>

The Western Music Solo competition scheduled for 12:00pm at Nexus 2014 got delayed due to technical difficulties, however the competition picked up pace once it began. The judges for the event were both in-house judges – Dr. Nikhil Yadav and Dr. Ratna Raman.

25 teams from colleges across campus participated in the event. Maximum of 2 teams per college were allowed and 3 accompanying artists were allowed along with each performer.

The performances ranged from Christina Aguilera’s songs to Amy Winehouse. All the performances were well received by the audience, making it worth the performer’s time and effort. Ultimately the winners were declared, the first position was bagged by Nirupan from Hansraj College and the second position by Hanita from Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.
