An adaption of the reality show “The Apprentice”, D’apprentice National is a 3-day Pan India business event that was organized recently by Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, in association with the Dean of student’s welfare, for undergraduate students. It aimed at pitting the crème de la crème of the country against each other in a highly competitive and realistic business environment.

The finale of the highly innovative event was held on 19th and was based on the concept of “Disneyfication”. The main idea behind it was infusing a place with a particular idea, hybrid consumption, and merchandising, In other words, selling a variety of goods under the same theme and concept. The aim was to provide a platform for experience based learning in a highly competitive business environment facilitated by challenging tasks that tested entrepreneurial, organizational, and general management skills.

8 teams, named after Mafia clans, had set up their own stalls under their chosen theme and actually sold their products to customers in real time. The aim was to take the competition to the real market so it was organised at Vishwavidyala metro station. The event started around 2 pm, which was the peak time for commuters to pass by, thus a great opportunity to attract consumers. Students could be seen trying to bargain and sell their products.

This task offered the students an insight into the competitive business world and the teams were evaluated on their marketing as well as their total profits. Team Tattaglia Family emerged as the winners of the event and won Rs. 48 grand along with internships. Nikhil Singh was the strongest person of the event- the Godfather, and he won a cash prize of Rs. 5000, along with a voucher worth Rs. 6000 and an internship.

The event was a huge success and a excellent learning experience.

In a time where most coaching institutes at the school level are looked as money minting machines, this one clearly stands out. Pratham is a coaching institute that specifically caters to preparing students for various entrance examinations at the under graduate level.

Formed in 2009, Pratham is the result of the brain storming of 3 pass-outs of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business studies. The bedrock of the idea of forming such an institute was to impart education to students that made them look beyond the 2 sides of books and build a smart career by widening their horizon and exposing them to the plethora of career opportunities that today’s world gives them. The International Institute of Financial Markets was formed by these 3 friends in 2008 and Pratham is a brand that functions under the banner.

Pratham aims to facilitate students in making an informed choice post class 12. They organize workshops in schools across Delhi introducing students to the various entrances, like Mass Communication, Law, BBS, BBA, BFIA etc. Pratham has coaching centres all across Delhi, where students are taught not only how to crack these entrances, but also build their personality, suited according to their chosen field of expertise. Pratham’s support to students is not only just limited to teaching how to clear entrances, but they further train you to clear the Group Discussions and Personal Interviews that follow. Such is the track record of Pratham, that in 2011, they had 6 All India Rank 1s, and in 2012 they had 7.

Pratham provides free entrance preparation to students who wish to reappear in the entrance exams, and also to a chosen 10 students. The atmosphere at Pratham is conducive to learning, where the teachers are more like friends, and help students in every way.

Pratham plans to expand its area of working to post graduate entrances like GMAT, SAT, CPT soon.

Verve, The Street Play Society at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies is proud to present “MANTHAN 2013”, which aims to harness the power of street theatre to arise a sense of responsibility and cognizance about sensitive issues within the society. Over the past six years of its history, different colleges across Delhi have come together and performed street plays with various alluring themes at many public places, all with an aim to reach out to people and get them thinking. The largest and the most extensive street play festival in Asia, MANTHAN, is widening its expanse this year to a month long fest spanning across 3 cities-Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. Manthan will incorporate ‘nukkadnatak’ performances from various college teams and professional groups on the plethora of social issues plaguing our nation. The highlight of the event is the unique socio-cultural initiative, titled the ‘Street Play to Schools’ programme, undertaken with the purpose of promoting Street Play culture in future college students and to create awareness at the same time. Spanning from 6th February – 15th February 2013, the school programme was host to a volley of excellent ideas and synergetic performances by reputed colleges in various schools across Delhi. The School programme had the following schools and colleges as its participants:

  • Bal Bharti School, Pitampura- Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies and Lady Sri Ram College
  • Sardar Patel Vidyalaya- Daulat Ram College, Sri Ram College of Commerce
  • St. Mary’s School, Safdarjung- Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College
  • Delhi Public School, Rohini- Hansraj College
  • Sri Guru Nanak Public School, Adarsh Nagar- Miranda House
  • Mira Model School, Janakpuri- Motilal Nehru College
  • Ahlcon International School- Hindu College

However, this is just the beginning. Taking off from the grand success of the school programme is the first-of-its-kind ‘Street play to NGOs’ programme. Through its launch, Manthan plans to touch the deeper roots of the society by performing street plays in slums in association with various NGOs across the Delhi-NCR region. The schedule for the performances at NGOs is as follows: 18th February 2013- Arya Anathalay, Daryaganj 19th February 2013- Bachho Ka Ghar, Daryaganj 20thFebruary 2013- Prabhaat 21st February 2013- Blind Relief Association Commencing from 25th February is the main event of the festival with each day modeled around a unique theme; plays relevant and pertaining to that particular theme will be performed on that day. At the conclusion of the performances, an open discussion about the theme will be held with the audience under the esteemed presence of eminent personalities from the field of theatre, performing arts, education, media, social and political activists, etc. The event is being promoted as a free-for-all event that promises entertainment and at the same time raises the specter of social evils haunting the nation and drives home a serious and meaningful message of bringing about social changes. FinX: The Finance Society of CBS[/caption] In a world where pragmatic knowledge is essential, a unique initiative such as that of the Finance society of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies goes a long way in bridging the gap between the classroom culture and the real world understanding. Incepted in 2008, FinX is a unique initiative taken by the students of S.S.C.B.S with the intention of providing financial education and testing the financial acumen of students. The society runs a weekly e-paper, the Weekly Pulse, throwing light on major developments in the world of business and finance and giving insights on the effect of policy decisions in the macro economy. The USP of FinX though is its mock stock trading game – FinWiz. Among the various stock trading simulations doing the rounds in colleges, FinWiz comes closest to matching the bullish and bearish trends of the stock exchange market. Chirag Jain, student coordinator of FinX says:

“Since we believe in matching up to the standards of our highly intellectual and stimulating participants, each event entails a proper format depicting the vagaries of the stock markets, its dynamic spirit, of being moved by the forces of real demand and supply, its uncertain nature and the thrills of playing with virtual money. Apart from pioneering mock stocks, we organize finance quizzes, bidding wars and online contests.”

Chirag adds, “BSE is helping in making the event grander. Also their representatives will be explaining the concepts of stock markets that are going to be tested within FinWiz. So, for those who don’t have previous knowledge, BSE will ensure you are quickly equipped with the needful acumen.” The society also indulges in holding other competitions such as Fight of the Knights, FinQuizzitive, Bulls and Bears and Debt o Blast throughout the calendar to test the skills of finance enthusiasts from Delhi University.
