Student politics at the prestigious University of Delhi (DU) college Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Morning) took a bizarre turn when the annual elections to the Students’ Union were marred by unprecedented violence that ended with a student sustaining an injury in his head.

The fiercely contested elections of 12th September witnessed a violent ruckus when the victim, Jatin Sahu’s head was bashed by a Presidential candidate, Vikas Nagar. At around 12:30 p.m., Nagar, along with his team, entered the canteen to campaign for the elections. Sahu, who supports Sandesh Kumar (another Presidential candidate) started campaigning for him, due to which the Nagar team got intolerant and resorted to violence. A video shot at the scene of incident wherein Sahu is blaming Nagar for the attack has been making rounds.

Interestingly, after only six hours of the incident, Jatin Sahu can be seen taking his statement back, and saying, “It is all sorted now.”

It is a shame that such incidents are becoming more and more common with every passing year. In 2017, the campus witnessed violent uprisings in Ramjas College. After Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Hyderabad Central University, DU’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (M) has become the new battleground for violent politics.

Ramesh* (*name changed) a third-year student of B.A. (Hons.) Political Science states, “How can someone just change their statement in six short hours after getting their head bashed? Clearly, he was pressured to do so.”

Sandesh Kumar quotes, “It is a shame to have witnessed such an incident. Clearly, the opposition played petty politics that led to such a violent act. I refuse to believe the statement released hours after the incident. If I win the elections, I will address this incident with serious gravity.”

Both, Jatin Sahu and Vikas Nagar were unavailable to give a quote.

“The college is guided by the values of ethics, integrity, national integration,” the College maintains. Yet, sadly, the administration has not taken a single step against the person responsible. It is high time to address such incidents with the seriousness they deserve as college is the ground that lies the first brick to change the politics of the country and clearly India needs leaders that can save the country from the turmoil it is facing.

The Commerce Association of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College hosted the third edition of its annual case study competition – Contrivance 2017 – on 22nd September 2017. In Contrivance, the participants are encouraged to select a business case study on their own within the premises of a generic theme. In the first and second edition of the event, the themes for selecting the case study were “Marketing Challenges” and “Strategic Management in Business” respectively, while this year, the theme was “Customer Engagement: Strategies and Challenges”. The theme was selected with the belief that customer engagement is the key to developing complex business models and understanding the nature of challenges in business.

In Contrivance 2017, participants were required to prepare a case study under the ambit of the mentioned theme and form an analysis and solution for the case. The event was organised over two rounds. The first round was an online preliminary round and the selected top 9 teams made it to the final round where they were to give presentations to a panel of judges.

The event drew participation from over twenty colleges of Delhi University and various other colleges of Delhi-NCR. The judges for the event were Mr. Alok Upadhyay, a Marketing Professional and Dr. Ruchik Ramakrishnan, Associate Professor at Shyam Lal College. AMPS Facilities Management Services Pvt. Ltd. was the proud co-sponsor of this event, while Johnny Rockets was the food partner.

The event started with addresses by the Convenor of Commerce Association, Dr. Ruchi Gupta, the Teacher-in-Charge of department of Commerce, Dr. Harish Handa, and the judges. The participants then proceeded with the presentations of their cases. Each presentation was followed by a series of questions from the jury. The judges were fascinated by the idea of graduate students having done these case studies on important business scenarios and encouraged the participants with their words of wisdom. Even the participants were very excited and were seen interacting with the judges and taking their valuable inputs.

The first prize was bagged by the team of Aayush Gupta and Bhavya Bhatia from Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, who were awarded a cash prize of Rs.10,000 and a sterling trophy. Their case study and analysis was on Netflix. The second prize went to Simran Ahuja and Ridam Dhawan from Hindu College while the third position was secured by Amisha Patel and Urvi Kochhar from Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Their case studies were on Cognizant and Uber respectively. The winners were also awarded redeemable cash vouchers by our food partner Johnny Rockets. The participants and winners appreciated the management and organisation of the event which made Contrivance a success.

The differences between the College Administration and the Student’s Union at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Morning) further widened this week. The crisis between the administration and the union, which has existed for sometime, continued after the removal of the student union’s board from the Canteen Area by the college authorities.

Abhishek Bishnoi, the President of the Student Union and Prateek Kothari, the Vice President of the same body, in conversation with our correspondent maintained that the college has been indifferent to their demands since election time. According to them, the proposals for the Power Backup system and better infrastructure at the Canteen area among other things had been rejected multiple times by the administration.

Prateek Kothari further added that “Even the Student Union display board was erected after many efforts. But the college administration took another offence, this time in response to a grievance post on social media. The display board was torn down. Only after many protests, it was reinstated at a different location.”

The student union’s members also complained about the lack of financial incentives. The Vice President of the student’s Union in this regard said, “Even the bare minimum funds are never made available to us. For instance, only 2.9 lakh has been sanctioned to us for the fest, which is an impossible amount to work with” .

The Students Union had also approached the college authorities, who had refrained entirely from any clarification on the matter. According to the Union members, despite repeated efforts no response has been recorded from the administrations side as yet.

The students of the college seemed harboring similar questions. Sparsh Saini, a first year student, having keenly observed the conversation, had made his opinion and said, “Something is missing. If the fests don’t do well or the infrastructure is bad, it’s the college’s reputation that gets tarnished”.

A strike has been called for in the first week of February by the Student’s Union of the college. “The administration cannot go on kicking us out of the rooms and turning deaf ears to us”, Union members added.

Though there are innumerable places to visit around Shaheed Bhagat Singh College and College of Vocational Studies, students had always been wishing for an eating joint that serves great food at minimal costs, with a proper seating area. Eatlo is one such place which offers the best of both and is located right in front of College of Vocational Studies. The restaurant serves mainly Italian and fast-food, but has some really innovative dishes, along with some great shakes and drinks.

Ambience

Eatlo is a small eating joint but the place is much better as compared to other restaurants in the same place. The walls have really quirky things to look at, and the place has great decoration. It’s a great place to chill out with your friends with seating areas both inside as well as outside the restaurant.

Delicacies

Everything we ordered at Eatlo was delicious and affordable at the same time. Their Cheese Storm Pizza beats the Dominos bland pizzas any day. We also ordered a veggie burger, oreo shake, choco fudge waffles with ice-cream, iced tea, and fire-fries. Though the waffles were a tad bit bland, dry, and hard, everything was scrumptious. They provide with a choice to pair waffles with an oreo/kitkat shake, making both even more affordable.

Affordability

The place is extremely affordable after the kind of service and food they provide. Our bill amounted to lesser than 500 rupees even after ordering such a lot of different items. They provide a 20% discount to students once you show your college id, which makes the food even more affordable.

Service

The people in the restaurant are extremely nice, and talk in a friendly way.

“Exemplary are the lives of those who espouse the cause of our motherland and through their sacrifices, inspire generations for selfless and dedicated service to the nation,” said the Press Release by Delhi University on Martyrs Day celebrated on 23rd March. The University marked this day by opening doors to a room in the Viceregal Lodge, where Bhagat Singh was imprisoned for a day before he was hanged along with Sukhdev and Rajguru. The room was furnished by a cot and a picture of the revolutionary and contained works on Bhagat Singh and even handwritten letters by the fighter. The University invited hundred students from different schools for a guided tour of the room which has been kept locked since it was handed over to the University in 1933 and now houses the Vice Chancellor’s office.   Vice Chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi said that the resource centre aims at making everyone learn from the lives of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and his fellow freedom fighters. He mentioned that the centre will be open to college students, research scholars and even school children who wish to learn from the works of the martyr and other scholarly works on him. It won’t, however be opened to the public. The University plans on turning it into a museum later on and make the resource available to students on certain selected days in a week. The Vice Chancellor, an alumnus of Jawahar Lal Nehru University when asked to draw comparisons between Kanhaiya Kumar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh said that anyone who fights for a just cause is inspired by the martyr. Bhagat Singh along with others revolutionaries threw bombs in the parliament to ‘make the deaf hear’ to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai and JP Saunders. He became a symbol of standing up to the wrongdoings of the English government.   Feature Image credit: thehindu.com Akshara Srivastava [email protected]  ]]>
