In a monumental win for India and Delhi University (DU), students of Shaheed Sukhdev Colllege of Business Studies (SSCBS) were declared winners at the Global Case Competition, Harvard University 2020.

Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (SSCBS) brought laurels to Delhi University (DU) as well as the nation. In the first-ever win for India of this kind, SSCBS bagged the first position representing India at the Global Case Competition at Harvard University (GCCH) 2020. Competing with over 140 teams from universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John Hopkins University, HEC Paris and London Business School.

Prize money of 10,000 USD was awarded to the winning team. Mr Olivier Levyne, Managing Director, CACIB announced the glorious win to the team comprising of 2nd-year students from SSCBS- Sparsh Sehgal, Ojas Jhamb, Kunal Vats, Raghav Nath and Aanand Negi. They were mentored under the able guidance of the faculty members Mr Neeraj Sehrawat and Mr Amit Kumar.

Kunal Vats spoke to DU Beat, “I hope this win sets a precedent of Indian teams winning big at the global stage and inspires many business students to work towards their dreams,” The team members expressed their delight too, “It has been a dream come true for us! Winning it has been surreal. Competing against and beating the top universities from around the world will always have a special place in our lives. We’re happy that our hard work and quality of work was rewarded. This edition was online as compared to the other rounds held at Harvard, and we were able to adapt to the new format effectively. We’re really glad that this competition happened despite the ongoing pandemic!”

Congratulating the winners, Dr Poonam Verma, Principal, SSCBS says, “It was a great opportunity for our students to learn and interact with other international students. I am glad that our students are achieving international laurels and bringing positive news especially during such times,”

The GCCH is organized by the IFSA Network and Harvard GSAS Business Club. One of the most prestigious case competitions, it attracts the brightest economists, business-minds and finance-enthusiasts from around the world. With a mere three weeks in hand, students compete on a finance case involving strategic management, eventually, culminating at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Due to the pandemic, the event was organised through an online mode. School of Business and Economics, Brazil and John Hopkins University were declared the first and second runner-up, respectively.

International Conference on Infocom Technology and Business Operations Organised at DU

The 9th edition of International Conference on Quality, Reliability, Infocom Technology and Business Operations(ICQRIT-2018) was organised by Dept. of Operation Research, the University of Delhi from 27th to 29th December 2018 at Conference Centre, University of Delhi.

ICQRIT-2018 has been organised in collaboration of Society for Reliability Engineering, Quality and Operations Management (SREQOM), Luleå University of Technology(LUT), Sweden and Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO). This 9th edition the Conference focused on cutting-edge Research and Development in the area of Quality, Reliability, Infocom Technology and Business Operations, Artificial Intelligence, Bio-Statistics, Data Science and Analytics, Innovation and Start-Ups. Eminent delegates, researchers, industry experts, scholars and students from more than 15 countries across the globe participated, enriched and broaden the horizon of the knowledge of research community, said Dr Ompal Singh, Conference Secretary.

Pal, Director, Cyber Security, DRDO enlightened the participants about the recent technological developments and challenges of the future such as Fake News, Data security and privacy and mining Big Data etc. Guest of Honour, Mr Pankaj P Shreyaskar, Director, Ministry of Statistics Planning and Implementation, highlighted the importance of Data and Data analytics in the governance processes and systems in today’s time for efficient and effective governance. The Next edition of the conference will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Antaragni: Unleash The Fire Within- 7 Days To Go

Antaragni- Antar + Agni(hindi)-The fire within. Antaragni, the annual intercollegiate cultural festival of IIT Kanpur, is a tribute to the fire that remains kindled in the hearts of people, the fire that drives them to melt boundaries and achieve the extraordinary. The fest started as “Culfest” in the 1960’s before being rechristened Antaragni in 1993. The generic name was to emphasize the fact that it was the first and only such event at that time. Antaragni’12, with the theme ‘Medieval Fantasy’ will be held from the 11^th to the 14^th of October and is scheduled to be opened by the multi-lingual sensation Raghu Dixit.

Antaragni is one eclectic mix of a lot of things- competitions, professional shows, talks, exhibitions, street shows, workshops and the list goes on ad infinitum. It becomes a classic case of having too many options and one wishes to be present at a lot of places simultaneously. Competitions form the backbone of this festival. Events catering to dramatics, dance, musicals, photography, English and Hindi literature and quizzes have seen extensive and intensive participation from colleges, especially those from Delhi. The situation is such that this year two of the events (Synchronicity- Rock competition and Quizzes) have dedicated Delhi rounds.

In order to cement its position as Northern India’s favourite festival, Antaragni’12 has initiated the ‘Dream On’ campaign. It is an ambitious idea which attempts to give the winners a shot at national fame and creative satisfaction of learning from the best in each field. The winners of different competitions in addition to monetary incentives will be provided with internships, mentorships and recording deals with leading academies like Shimak Davar’s Institute of performing arts, Barry John Acting Studio, Delhi College of Arts, Delhi School of Photography etc. In fact, Ritambhara has been especially opened to individual participants with coverage in MAXIM and photo-shoots in Hollywood at stake.

To add spirit and flesh to this skeleton of competitions, there would be national and international artists (more than 10 in number) ranging from rock bands to Irish folk musicians to sand artists to Odishi dancers. There would be fun informal activities while Mridaksh will continue its search for Ms & Mr. Antaragni. If it’s the intellect that needs simulation, there would be a panel discussion with eminent people like Arun Maira and Ayaz Memon. To take care of the glamour aspect there would the likes of Sudhir Mishra, Rajiv Khandelwal and Abbas Tyrewala who’ll have special sessions with the students.

The festival seems to be shaping up well with a holistic cultural showcase and it’s only a matter of time before, as the motto says, the fire is unleashed.

International Exchange Programs

Delhi University, being one of the premier universities of our country has left no stone unturned to ensure that students get the right kind of exposure to education trends all over the world. Keeping this in mind, it has a number of international exchange Programs with renowned universities from various parts of the globe. It has long been in consortium with several universities through various projects, and provides undergraduate and post graduate students, as well as faculty members with several opportunities for exchange programmes, fellowships and scholarships. The main aim of these programmes is to give the students a chance to learn in a new, more global environment and facilitate inter- cultural interaction and understanding.

For undergraduate courses, the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Lot 15 for India provides funds to promote student and teaching staff mobility between 12 European universities and 8 Indian universities. It is available to all Delhi University students. Through EMECW15, successful applicants (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctorate students as well as academic staff) are also awarded a scholarship which covers costs of travel, insurance, possible tuition, living expenses and housing. The coordinating institution for the EMECW15 scheme is the University of Lund (Sweden). The yearly deadline for submission of applications is 15^th February. Delhi University has also collaborated with the University of Heidelberg and the University of California and these ties having been strengthened further during the last five years. There is a successful student exchange programme between the University of Delhi and these Universities especially in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Apart from these, many exchange programmes in Delhi University are college specific.

LSR has collaborated with many international universities and at present has exchange programmes going on with Kinnaird College, La Trobe University and Smith College.

Brown College too has collaborated with LSR and St. Stephens, while NUS is in partnership with LSR and Hindu College.

Last year, a team of 12 students and four faculty members from the Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied sciences visited the University of Delhi for an inter-cultural interaction, the focus being provision of multi-cultural interaction on the academic platform. About 30 students from Miranda and SRCC participated in this programme.

The Centre of International Education at Ramjas College has also been greatly enhancing the prospects of students. At present, they are conducting jointly conducting a programme with Denmark’s International Study Program, Copenhagen. It also has to its credit an exchange program with the Department of Applied Economics, Antwerp, Belgium and Lahore University of Management Sciences.

In addition to this, efforts are on at present to build relationships with institutions in Sweden, New Zealand, Brazil and Chile, and discussions and other preparatory work for the same are in progress.

Information regarding exchange programmes for a specific course, if any, being offered in other colleges can be obtained from the concerned department of that college.

International exchange programmes have helped to establish a more global front and given a more holistic base to the undergraduate studies of Delhi University. However, the absence of a semester system and difference in the marking structure still limits the choice of Delhi University students to programmes in partner universities only, which is sometimes restricted only to specific courses. A student of Miranda House says, “I had been to the US this summer for a short term course. The Universities are keen to introduce more exchange programs but according to them, the technicalities of both the systems hugely differ”. Hopefully the possible introduction of the Semester System next year will improve prospects of collaboration with premier institutes and increase the choices in course and subject.
