If you’re a student in college, it’s quite apparent to hear the word ‘Enactus’ time and again, and be drawn towards it once you gather knowledge of their far-reaching projects. Enactus is essentially an international non-profit organization that brings together teams of university students with entrepreneurs and admirable educators to make a meaningful difference in their communities while enhancing their business skills to become great leaders of today and tomorrow.

In the Enactus India National Championship, students from all over the country are provided a forum to showcase the results of their extensive business ventures and community outreach projects through rounds of live, presentation based competition. Having previously won the Enactus National Championship twice, once in 2011 and the other in 2014, Enactus Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (SSCBS) recently scored a hat-trick by emerging victorious, again, at the Enactus Nationals 2016 held on 21st and 22nd July at Taj Lands End, Mumbai.

Established in January 2009, the team of Enactus SSCBS strives to create a significant change in the society by using the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and implementation of business models to empower all the disadvantaged members of the society and make them self sufficient individuals.

The first and the oldest initiative that Enactus SSCBS worked upon was Sanitary Solutions that aimed at improving the sanitary conditions of women in slums and villages across India. They also promoted the safe and effective use of sanitary napkins by making them easily accessible and extremely affordable to the women of rural areas and urban slums. This initiative was started from the slums of Delhi NCR and later, spread throughout the nation.

Their second outreach initiative was Project Akshar which began in 2011 and focused on setting up low cost environment-friendly notebook production units through collection of waste paper, recycling of the same and binding of this recycled paper into notebooks by our entrepreneurs, i.e. victims of drug abuse and human trafficking. This year, they expanded the paper collection to six cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Noida and Vaishali. Further, they also came up with an innovative new variant of producing extremely low priced notebooks, especially for the underprivileged children.

Another project which the team effectively worked on was Grammodhar which aimed at creating an overall holistic development of Ghamroj, a village 30-40 kms from Gurgaon. To stimulate their economy, they encouraged and assisted people in setting up new business ventures such as Poultry farming, beauty parlors and tailoring works. Since it was difficult to penetrate a village, the team also used several trust building activities (such as health camps, etc) to have their bonafide intentions felt.

The two projects which the team presented at Enactus Nationals 2016 were Raahat and Udaan. Through Raahat, the team aims at eradicating open defecation by providing safe sanitation facilities and improving the existing infrastructure of community toilets. They began by undertaking the management of toilet complexes in Sultanpuri and adopted a user centric approach which included the system of family passes, sensitisation and health campaigns. As a result, the population who defecated in the open dropped from 95% to 3% after only six months of their project’s implementation. Udaan, on the other hand, aims to promote digital literacy through setting up of computer labs in villages and teaching the working knowledge of computers to all children by women entrepreneurs. Currently, the team has set up 12 computer centres in villages across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and many more.

On being asked to unveil the secret of their team’s continual success, Harsh Garg, one of the team members of Enactus SSCBS said, “What really sets our team apart is our approach towards problem solving. One of our core beliefs has been that we can solve India’s most daunting social and economic issues if we empower individuals to take an action against it. This is manifest in all of our projects. We do not just empower our entrepreneurs in terms of their income but also in terms of their capability to impact people. This leads to a chain effect in which setting up even a single computer centre or a production unit ends up bringing about a change in several lives. Another thing which differentiates our team is the amount of passion and commitment exhibited by each and every member of the project. More than a team, we are a close knit family which possesses an unconditional attachment for our work at Enactus, without which we cannot survive even one normal conversation, let alone a day.”

Currently, the team is busy with their preparation of new ideas for their project’s presentation at the Enactus World Cup, where they will compete against the National Champion teams from 36 other countries in Toronto, Canada.
DU Beat wishes the entire team good luck for all their future endeavors!

Phase 1 focused on individual orders, wherein the volunteers and the team members  had to bring orders from households in their vicinity. Phase 2 shifted attention from individual orders to bulk orders in educational institutions, coaching centers, etc. Volunteers and the team members were supposed to contact their schools and nearby coaching centers for these bulk orders. The plants were sold at reasonable prices with timely delivery within 3-4 business days. The campaign witnessed an extraordinary success in phase 1, where the sales crossed over 2500 plants. This distant vision saw success because of the tireless efforts the team who continuously guided the volunteers at every step and motivated them to work hard. Phase 2 was also extremely successful and the overall sales crossed the 4000 mark. Overall, the campaign was extremely successful and Enactus SGGSCC was able to raise funds equal to Rs. 25000 from the campaign for funding its various other social projects. Leading by Bushnell’s quote, “The true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer.” the Enactus Society of Delhi University’s Maitreyi College has grown, within only two years of its inception, into a well established platform of social transformation that aims to achieve a holistic development of all the weaker sections of the society and help them attain a sustainable livelihood through various development programs and social entrepreneurial projects.

Founded by Sanchila Arora in 2014, the society consists of some forty members who together took on their very first entrepreneurial initiative – Project Unnayan. Adhering to the purpose of the word ‘Unnayan’ which means ‘Upliftment’, the project works towards the process of improving the living conditions of all women residing in the socially and economically backward sections of the society by training them in making and selling liquid dishwashing products, Clean Ninja.

There are many areas in Delhi where economic trends are extremely weak which not only lessens economic opportunities for all but also leads to low incomes, poor living conditions and health of families and low levels of sustainability due to unemployment. There have also been several instances, as confessed by women to the members of Enactus Maitreyi, in which their husbands have spent all their income in consumption of alcohol and even became violent when tried to be stopped, further leading to the deliberate wastage of all their money on unruly wants instead of being used for basic requirements of care for their families.

The members of Enactus Maitreyi therefore, get together with the targeted set of women in a safe and hygienic working environment on a regular basis, and train them in the basic techniques of producing the liquid dishwasher, Clean Ninja. They do so by teaching them the methods of measuring and mixing all the ingredients correctly with the help of different apparatus and neatly packaging the products simultaneously once they are created. Once they are familiar with this art of producing the dishwashing liquid, they are guided to the process of marketing and selling the products as well. Apart from the production, the women employed under Enactus Maitreyi are also taught about the basic necessities of wearing gloves and masks during the whole process and the uniqueness of these products which lies in their quality and uniformity along with the environment-friendly aspect adjoined with it. In short, the team members do everything they can to help them gain proficiency in all the essential skills and knowledge required for becoming strong, self sufficient and economically independent women in the society.

Rashmi Verma, President, Enactus Society of Maitreyi, strongly believes that “There aren’t any people, who wouldn’t want to make a change in the society, but there are indeed, very few who successfully create a difference. More than dreamers, we are the ‘do-ers’. Being an all girls team, we have learnt the strength and courage each one holds within us. There is nothing in the world which can deter our unity now and stop us from turning any idea into a reality once we put our mind to it. Through Project Unnayan, we provide women a platform where they can explore new arenas of life and start living a life they never believed they could experience. All women employed under our initiative are thus, working voluntarily and are extremely happy with this effort crossing their lives.”

The Enactus Society of Maitreyi College has also recently won the KPMG Grant Competition 2015, where they have been awarded with a grant of Rs. 50,000.

Due to the consistent positive response gained for their results of Clean Ninja, once their current project becomes stable and the women of the community gain complete self reliance over their work, the Enactus Society of Maitreyi College has decided to come up with the production of many more variants of the same product with a new set of workforce, and would also be seen creating many more successful projects in the near future.

Enactus Projects are some things which, as a magazine, we enjoy covering religiously. The thrill of discovering new ideas and the competitiveness between colleges is a really positive message that every enactus team sends out while they carry out their activities throughout the year. Given the latest surge in the demand for start-ups, social entrepreneurship (especially, enactus projects) are poised to contribute a huge amount in creating jobs. Here are 2 teams from across the university who have upgraded their projects by introducing a new community or a new idea –

1.) Enactus Motilal Nehru College – Enactus Motilal Nehru College has been recognized as the only college in India working for animal welfare. It promotes the adoption of stray dogs and the reduction of rabies in the country via Project Parivartan, their maiden project. Recently it has employed women from an urban village (Sanjay Gandhi Centre, Chanakyapuri) near Jesus and Mary College for producing handmade dog collars and dog food.  Disha Garg (President) stated “While the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated, the development of the nation would be judged by the way its women are treated”, when asked about why they chose the mentioned communities.

2.) Enactus Cluster Innovation Centre – Enactus Cluster Innovation Centre plan to start an e-commerce website  that sells handicrafts and other products made exclusively by the differently-abled community. They are currently in contact with more than 10 NGO’s in Delhi who cater to the needs of differently-abled community, who can make products taught by the respective NGO but are unable to market them. Only seasonal markets come to the aid of these products. However, with Project IBTIDA, Enactus Cluster Innovation Centre aims to enlist all products provided by the NGO’s throughout the year. They also aim to provide a warehouse where these products can be stored for retail sales. Kirti Krishan (Core Team Member) said,” We have started a Bitgiving campaign and are very close to attaining the sufficient funding to go ahead with our project. We have also been fortunate to receive a notion of positivity from a few investors and a big NGO” when asked about how far they were from achieving their goal.

One of the most sought after Enactus teams in the country, Enactus SSCBS is back with its awaited College Leaders Program (CLP).

Earning the spotlight by winning Enactus Nationals and representing India in the Enactus World Cup 2014 in Beijing, China, Enactus SSCBS works on various social entrepreneurial projects like Sanitation Solutions, Gramodhar and Project Akshar.

The Project Akshar Initiative would be the focus of this year’s College Leader’s program. Akshar’s larger motive lies in making the disabled and underprivileged socially and emotionally independent, it seeks to empower them with book binding skills.

To help reach the goals of Akshar, CLP was initiated where students from various colleges in Delhi are chosen to be the representatives of Project Akshar within their college. The students chosen then form a team to undertake waste paper collection, promotion and selling of The Akshar Notebooks. To sum up, it is an opportunity for university students to gain valuable startup experience while creating and implementing action plans for their campuses.

College Leaders Program

The CLP has expanded its horizon by also involving people in e waste collection. Selected people will also be involved in corporate partnerships and social media marketing.

What do you get when you add textile wastage, environment protection and women empowerment? Why, Project Katran of course. The project, started by the social entrepreneurs by Enactus College of Vocational Sudies, aims to bring livelihood and independence to women in slums and other backward areas of Delhi.

The idea is simple: they take the clothes generally thrown away, recycle them and have women entrepreneurs turn them into beautiful bags. The journey to the project being functional wasn’t without its challenges. It took an entire semester of research to set up and finally run the project. Today, they have two centers and sixteen women being trained to make the product.

The project takes care of all minute details: trends in the markets, the skill level of the women and the quality of the cloth being used. Sales, however, turned out to be an issue. Divyansh Dua, President of Enactus CVS, explains, “After the ladies started making the bags, we faced a problem in selling them as the market for up-cycled products is limited. We tapped a section of the market by targeting college students by putting up stalls at fests and are now looking for sustainable solutions.” One such solution is a dedicated Facebook page by the name of Katran.

Collaborations with Green the Gap and WWF are also on the cards, members of the society explained. Though only a year into existence, this chapter of Enactus has achieved considerably and has big plans for the future which include opening more centers all over Delhi, impacting at least a thousand people and diversifying into other products like folders, jewellery etc.

Every time we pass a dumpster, we cover our face. We cannot stand the smell of the stinking garbage. But, right in that dumpster are people; men, women with little infants in one hand and a bag in the other, and little children with bags full of filth.  They are our city’s ‘invisible environmentalists’. They are the ones who segregate our biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes. The other invisible lot of our city is of the four thousand sex workers trapped in the seventy-seven brothels, situated within one kilometer radius of G.B. Road. Both these sections of our society not only lead an impossibly hard life but, a marginalized one too; a life completely devoid of social acceptance and economic stability. In an effort to bring a positive change in the lives of these two sections of our society, the young entrepreneurs of Enactus Satyawati are working on two projects – Project Navjeevan and Project Vasundara. Enactus Satyawati consists of 35 Enacters who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world. It started 18 months back and has achieved a number of national level grants, including being sponsored by KPMG, Walmart, Bluedart, HUL and Mahindra Rise. Project Navjeevan Through this project, Enactus Satyawati aims to improve the lives of the women at G.B. Road by providing them with the training to make notebooks. This will not only provide them with a new way to gain economic stability but, pave a path which will help them enter the mainstream world from their present marginalized state.  Their prime objective is to uproot these women from prostitution by providing them vocational training and tailoring so, that they can live a dignified life. They intend to provide them with a place within the social structure without the stigma of prostitution.   Project Vasundhara Under this project, Enactus Satyawati is working with the rag pickers of Roshnara Bagh. Rag pickers’ work involves the sorting out of the biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste is vermi-composted to produce ‘manure’ which is the cheapest in the realm of fertilizers and is accredited by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. The non-biodegradable waste is further sold off to middlemen who in return give them meager money for their labour. Children are the most exploited commodity in this trade of rag picking. They not only lose their childhood to hazardous workplaces but, are constantly prone to life-threatening diseases and toxic substances. Therefore, their project aspires to create a better and secure future for the rag pickers by opening new opportunities for them in various fields, while creating a model of ‘Green city, Zero Rubbish’, in the process. Enactus Hans Raj organized its annual Entrepreneurship Summit on 2nd April. The event had speaker sessions on personality development for girls and social responsibility. A management training workshop was also held along with the much highlighted Internship Fair 2014.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the summit was held in the college auditorium. The guests and dignitaries for the event were Mr. Anshul Gupta, founder of Goonj; Mr. Shakun Khanna, Strategic Management consultant, IBM; Ms. Shuchi Soni, Programme Manager from Enactus India (North), Mr. V.K Khwatra, Principal of the college and Ms. Sonal Gupta, ECA Convenor.

The event began with the lamp lighting ceremony by all the guests which was followed by honouring them for presiding over for the summit. V.K Khwatra then delivered a speech for all the young entrepreneurs. “What matters the most is personality. Today you all are here to learn entrepreneurship and get jobs and internships. What matters more than content of your resume is how you present yourself for that job”, he remarked.

The Entrepreneurship Summit was then declared open by Shrey Saxena, President at Enactus Hans Raj. This was followed by Vedika Dabriwal, Vice President and Enactus’s General Secretary, Harshita Muraka elaborated about the projects of Hans Raj Enactus for the year that were Project Swaad, Project Mithaas and Project Lekhni. A 10 minute video presentation revolving around Enactus Hans Raj, its projects, its members and appreciation received was played.

‘Mirror image of present India’ presented by Guest Speaker, Anshu Gupta

Mr. Anshu Gupta, Founder of Goonj was the Guest Speaker for the day. Goonj is an NGO which works to ‘make clothes a matter of concern’. Goonj collects underutilized clothes and other materials from urban homes, and uses them as resources for the poor.  Apart from clothes Goonj’s collection include things like shoes, toys, books, electronic gadgets, furniture, utensils and other urban waste.

Mr. Gupta during his session portrayed the ‘mirror image of present India’ in terms of social activities and tried to define norms of the social section. His speech included many questions that still remain unanswered as per him. “Harr kali sadak par hum toll tax kyun dete hain?”, “Harr ek ghar pe purifier kyun lagana padta hai?”

The discussion also included his comments about safety of girls. “Hum apni behen ko ghar par akela kyun ni chorh sakte?” He talked about the infamous Dehi bus gang rape as well. “Janta boht kam jaanti hai. Asli chor toh hum log hain. 500 waale challan ko 100 rupaye ki rishwat se nipta dete hain. 400 ki chori toh ek insaan ek challan pe kar leta hai.” Anshu pointed out the fact that citizens unnecessarily blame the police and the government. He talked about subsidies and health situation in the country. His speech had some youth connect where he rightly mentioned that, “Internships toh tum log sirf certificate ke liye karte ho. Motive aur toh koi hshamai hi nahi.

The audience, which was a gathering of around 500 people, was all ears to what Anshu had to say. His speech was acknowledged by a standing ovation from everybody in the auditorium. This was followed by a question answer round. Samaksh Gupta says, “His speech was well drafted and he was inspiring and mesmerising. His startling facts could inspire anyone to move out of their comfort zone to extend a hand for helping.”

Personality development workshop for girls by Suditi Bhadauria

A personality and confidence building workshop was organized by Veet as a part of the summit exclusively for girls. The workshop was addressed by Suditi Bhadauria, a behavioural corporate trainer.

Her interactive session encouraged full participation in the learning process which led to automatic modification of the behaviours. Divya says, “Her session gave us a lively outlook to the world. Our confidence is surely boosted.” Other girls in the session also felt that Suditi had the capability to mentor the group and her words will have a lasting effect. In her words, “Girls should not doubt themselves and think of themselves as future leaders.”

Management Training Workshop by Shakun Khanna

Mr. Gupta’s session was followed by a management training workshop by Mr Shakun Khanna who inspired the budding entrepreneurs to be top notch professionals. He pointed out that the problem of the present generation is to make choices. “It is not about survival. It is more about improvement”, he says. He talked about how one should focus on his or her strengths and develop them but also said that it is important to fix your weaknesses to be successful.

According to him hard work is an important factor but he adds that, “Hard work may not take you to the word class levels.” Talent, for him is the most important factor. He stressed on the fact that talent leads to success and one should have that sense of rhythm in entrepreneurship.

Divya Puri, who attended the workshop says, “His speech was a myth buster. As youngsters, we had a lot of misconceptions in our mind related to business and facts.” What appealed a lot to students there was that Mr. Khanna was not trying to forcefully make the students believe in business and entrepreneurship. He said, “Being an entrepreneur is not the only way to achieve your dreams. Follow what you like and you will be on the top.”

Think Business – The B-Plan Competition

The Summit also organized a business plan competition. Through the preliminary round, three finalists were selected who presented their business plan in front of the judges for ten minutes. Along with the business plan, the competition also consisted of guesstimates. Ayush Kashri from Maharaja Agarsen College won the competition. His idea of collecting flowers offered to various temples and then selling it to various companies to make perfumes and other cosmetics was chosen as the best idea.

Internship Fair 2014

The highlight of the Summit was the Internship Fair. From 30 companies last year, this time the fair witnessed 60 companies giving out internships to almost 500 candidates. Companies like Axsiom, Mindworkzz, Sawrneempropmart.com, Avanti (NGO), School of Inspired Leadership (SOIL), Pravah (NGO) among many more had put up their stalls. The fair saw the candidates moving from one stall to other submitting their resumes and talking about the job profile.

The fair also had new start ups being launched. Ankit Bagga, co-founder of EDZY says, “We as a start up got an overwhelming response in terms of footfall. We also got applications from many DU students.” The fair provided internships for all fields like marketing, management, social entrepreneurship, to name a few.

Shikha Maheshwari, a candidate who applied for internships says, “The fair offered a lot of choices and opportunities. There were lot of companies especially for the field I wanted to apply. It was very well organized.” With the fair, this year’s edition of Entrepreneurship Summit by Enactus Hans Raj came to an end.
