The Stand-up comic Abish Mathew won over the LSR centric audience with his charming ways and inside jokes about cats, our complete dependence on Balbir ‘dabbang’ Bhaiya for crisis of all kind and gave the women some precious insight to the working of the supposedly ‘one track’ male psyche.

The Principal planted an affectionate peck on the cheek of Monsieur Mathew at the end of the performance on the pretext of ‘doing what every girl in the auditorium wanted to’ and stole the show (as always), leaving the recipient of the said peck in a state of visible disbelief.

An armada of XY chromosome was noted to be gravitating towards the quizzing event. Sometimes stopping on their way to ask the directions to the Upper Seminar Room with the hesitance that only a seemingly intimidating same sex institution can fill in one in a shy yet polite manner.

Vinay Bhushan, a character reminiscent of Shahrukh Khan’s portrayal of Surinder Sahni in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in his blatant simplicity had the audience rooting for him since the very first scene where he brushes his teeth on stage. Post his performance in the KMC production ‘The Line’, an enthusiastic fan was shocked to discover that the actor’s accented English was a part of the act and words like ‘chiterr’ (sic) were not a part of his off stage vocabulary.

The audience at Yavnika – the Stage Theatre event was an extremely temperamental one, rushing out to only to re-enter (with food hidden inside their bags) every time the doors of the auditorium were opened after a performance.

The English Debating Society was spotted practicing their dancing skills at the registration desk while waiting for participants to stream in. Watching the President of the Society learn the steps to ‘subah hone na de’ with so much sincerity while simultaneously mouthing the words was the only thing that kept the NSS volunteers helping with Tarang Security entertained.

It was interesting to see people purchasing earrings, eating Chinese food and test driving a Tata Nano in the same venue.

The flash mob may not have been a total surprise but +10 points for the choice of the single ladies sound track. One could safely say that the strict security measures and the exclusivity of the passes ensure that the ladies of this college remain single forevermore, for the boys who do manage to make their way into the campus ‘if you like it then you should put a ring on it.’Pragya Lal

The Western Trio Singing at Tarang 2012 began at 1.30pm amidst an enthusiastic bunch of western music loyalists in the infamous bamboo room H-2. The music resonated well to produce a serene harmonizing effect in the rather crowded room. Following a two-teams-per-college format, the event was dominated by all-girls performances, particularly from Venkateswara and LSR college western music societies. The very notable efforts from the Team 2 of Venkateswara of mixing well-controlled humour and good harmonies were greeted very well from the audiences, even eliciting a smile from each of the judges. The CBS team of Sagar, Krishan and Shrutika pulled off a very country-themed moment; their performance shaped up pleasantly with many of the audience members singing along and clapping in sync to the popular number. The last performance by SRCC’s golden ladies seemed a little distinct as the team was not able to provide a cohesive unity, much to the dismay of the performers. Just as the results were being compiled by the judges, Kamakshi and Nirupan performed ‘Look Into My Eyes’ by Bryan Adams to entertain the audience. Their chemistry or perhaps the lack of it added a very comical note to the waiting. The ‘Kamasutra’ song [...]

You wait for what seems like an eternity and a half in a queue that resembles one outside the US Visa Offices or the Sidhivinayak temple on a 1st January morning to watch the Choreo Dance Competition and if you are lucky enough to get inside the auditorium you send a quick thank you prayer to Baba Jugaad.

The flexibility and elasticity of the dancers leaves you aghast and makes you feel like the couch potato you once warned the audience about during a school debate on man vs machine.

You overhear the girl standing in front of you singing “Laaast Taaaraangg I gaaave youuu maa haaart but thaa verrry next day youuu gave it awaay, theees yearr to saaave meee fraam teeears I gayyvee it to someone eespeciaaal” (sic) while standing in (yet another) unending queue to watch Them Clones perform.

An hour before the competition, a huge line formed outside the auditorium; the event entertained a houseful of enthusiastic people.
Kamala Nehru College performed next, presenting ‘The Awakening’, choreographed by Bhavani Mishra. The story was about a girl who wanted to follow her dreams, but was defeated by logic. Their dance depicted the conflict between mind and heart.

Next was Sri Venkateswara College. Their dance didn’t have a title but the theme was war and its consequences. Their dance was self choreographed, but it was excellent all the same.

Last to perform was LSR, and their performance, as always, was breathtaking.

The event was perhaps the most popular one today, and the line outside the auditorium remained strong all throughout the show.

Contrary to popular belief, there were a lot of vacant seats in the auditorium; the crowd was barely filling up the entire space, let alone overflowing.

The battle took off at a slightly cold note, the first band Pratigya, with Abhishek, as the lead singer, failed to impress what seemed like a rather deflated audience with their first song, ‘Aas Paas’. Their next song ‘Sadda Haq’ from the movie Rockstar didn’t seem to work too well either, as people left midway. Their interaction with the crowd didn’t pep them up either. They had to exit stage right before their last song as it was time for the next band to come on stage.

The second performance was by Soul River that brought a certain amount of intensity on stage with their original, self composed song, ‘Illusions of the Soul’. Their music was a dark yet soulful form of rock, their lyrics had a fantastic imagery about it. The crowd finally woke up when they played their second song, ‘Burn it Down’. The strong point of this band was their synchronization and their solos, which were simply flawless and very well composed. They earned a round of applause and a series of hoots from the audience.

By the time the next band, Incredible Mind Funk, came on stage, the audience had undergone a sort of revival – more seats had filled up, and people seemed more appreciative and receptive of the music. They played a mixture of punk rock and jazz, their synchronization was excellent and the vocalist, Neeraja, simply floored the audience, making it a peppy and fun filled performance.

As soon as the next band, Soul’d Out, the most popular and well-known of all the participating bands, with vocals by Chetan, accompanied by Shajal on bass, Abhay on saxophone, Abhijeet on drums, and Bhanu as the lead. They received a very loud and enthusiastic welcome from the crowd. They instantly seemed to connect with the audience. They built a rapport instantly, and gave a brief introduction to the kind of music they play and the songs they have composed, which they performed as well. This performance was undoubtedly the most well-received performance of the entire battle. The crowd couldn’t stop clapping and shouting in appreciation, everybody enjoyed the entire 9 minutes that Soul’d Out was on stage for. They completely ruled the event, and created an energy and ease on the stage with their dance moves and general enthusiasm. They were the only band to use a saxophone along with drums and bass. Their solos were amazing, synchronization was flawless and vocals were perfect. They left the crowd cheering, clapping, and asking for more.

Overall, the very first event of Tarang was a well-received and a successful one.

The winners of the battle of the Bands are as follows:

Winner: Soul’d Out

First Runner-up: Jokes Apart

Second Runner-up: Incredible Mind Funk

Day 1 of the annual fest of Kamala Nehru College, Ullas 2012, was just the perfect start to this year’s fest season, with events and competitions ranging from dance to debate to fashion. The fest started off with Nupur (Indian Dance) well on time to a jam-packed auditorium and a very excited audience. One could very frequently hear shouts of “Go KNC!!!” when the host team took stage. The event was judged by Ms. Madhumita Raut and Ms. Nalini Jain from the fields of Kathak and Odissi. In the end, in the Indian Folk (Group) category, KNC emerged as winners followed by Khalsa College and then JMC.

This event was followed by Adagio, the Choreography competition. Some others on the other hand, were trying to put their stand forward as part of Crossfire (English Debate), the topic for which was: Bitter medicine may be a well-meant cure but sweet poison has its own swift virtues. Here, Deshbandu walked away with the best team, with the best speaker from NSIT.

Then took place one of the most awaited competition of the day, Glitz, put together by the fashion society. This competition saw teams coming up with some totally out-of-the-box themes, with models wearing dresses made from newspapers, to CDs, to even balloons! It was Prophecy, fashion society of Lady Irwin College that walked away with the winner’s title and the accolades as well, followed by Glitz of the host college KNC.

The evening saw Battle of Bands, a competition amongst several Delhi bands with Claustrophobic Expansion, Ebonix, Soul’d Out and others performing some of their very popular numbers. Amidst all this, Caricature, Tattoo Making, T-shirt Making and the numerous food and games stalls also drew large crowds.

DAY 2

Day 2 of Ullas 2012 began just on the right note. Well, quite literally, with Rhythm ’n’ Blues, the Western Music competition, which saw over 30 teams participating in the different categories like Solo, Duet and Choir. In the duet round, while participants from Hansraj sang “Think of Me”, College of Business Studies did an acoustic cover of “She’ll be Loved” which was well appreciated by the audience. Others like DCAC and KNC also put up good performances covering songs like “Poker Face” and “Jar of Hearts” respectively. This was then followed by the Western Choir category, at the end of which Echo, from Jesus and Mary College was declared the winners, followed by Crescendo, the music society of Venkateswara, while the third position was shared between IP College for Women and Musoc of KMC.

Simultaneously, Srijan (Hindi Creative Writing) and Inquizzitive (Quiz) were also being held in other parts of the college. Though Ol’ That Jazz, the Western Dance competition, was supposed to begin at 1pm, it was only by 3pm that the participants took stage. However in a way it was worth the wait, because once the performances started, you could easily mistae the college auditorium to be a jam-packed movie hall all owing to the considerate hooting and applause! Here, the western dance society of Venkateswara walked away with the winner’s title.

As the evening drew close, one could also easily notice the crowd slowly growing large in number. Yes, everyone was very excitedly waiting for Bombay Rockers to show up and perform! By the time it was 6 in the evening, the scheduled time for the performance, a crowd ofover 700 geared-up faces had gathered! Within minutes, the duo of Naf-Thomas took over. True to their rock-dhol genre, they wereaccompanied by dhol players. First up was ‘Rock da Party’ followed by ’Ari Ari’ and other numbers! However about 40 minutes into the performance, due to a very excited bunch of people, the performance had to be stalled for few minutes, only to start over again bigger and better!
