Over a century old, Hindu College made a humble beginning in Chandni Chowk, before being built in its present form in 1953. Since the heady days of the freedom movement, through the idealism of the sixties, the disillusionment of the seventies and the realistic romanticism of the present times, Hindu College has been amongst the prominent centers of intellectual debate. Here’s a profile of the many facets of the institution.

Location

Hindu College is located right across St Stephens in the heart of North Campus in the University of Delhi.

Popular Courses

Hindu College offers as many as sixteen courses in diverse fields of arts, science and commerce. Of these, Economics, English, B.Com (hons) and Political Science are perhaps the most sought after. Although the cut-offs at Hindu College are sky-rocketing, the attention to academia isn’t as sincere as it is in several other colleges of the university. The previous year’s cut off list is up on the main page of the college website www.hinducollege.org.

Admission Procedure

General Category

Admission into Hindu College is based entirely on marks secured by students in their board examinations. Filling the centralized form is sufficient, although the college also has a separate form.

Sports and ECA Category

It is essential to fill the Sports/ ECA form to secure admission into the college through these categories. On a given date, all applicants are called for trials and interviews. Selection through the sports category is made on the basis of that day’s assessment alone, although in the case of ECA, it is followed by another round of load-shedding. In both cases, the entire process takes about ten days.

Infrastructure

A student aptly described the infrastructure at Hindu College as ‘ancient but sturdy’. Although nothing exceptionally delightful, it serves fairly well. The college is equipped with a library with a general as well as a reference section and smaller department libraries. Further, it has a decent auditorium and a computer library. The highlight of the previous years, however, is a posh new seminar room.

Extra Curricular Activities

Extra Curricular Activities are significant here, but nothing spectacular. The most prominent societies are the usual Music, Debating and Dramatics Clubs. However, the standards of these are unmatched by most other colleges of the university. Apart from these, there is also a creative writing society and a college magazine committee.

Sports

Although a number of sports are played by students of Hindu College, basket ball and cricket are perhaps the most popular.

Add-On Courses
Like many other colleges Hindu offers a variety of language add on options.
