Established in 1967, Gargi College is amongst the few women’s institutions that offer a wide range of courses traversing arts, the sciences as well as commerce. To add to that are a multiplicity of extra curricular activities and several very fascinating add-on courses that are the hallmarks of the college. All these are mentioned in good detail on the college website www.gargicollege.net, although this webpage too will give you a fair idea about the college.
Location
The college is located on the Siri Fort Road, right next to Kamla Nehru College. In the heart of South Delhi, it is very close to prominent market places like Aurobindo Market, M Block Market at GK-1, etc; and well-connected by bus to other parts of the city.
How to Get There
Bus Route No. 413, which connects Mehrauli to Nizammuddin Railway Station via Lajpat Nagar stops at JB Tito Marg, which is perpendicular to the road on which Gargi College is located. Bus Route No. 500, which connects Saket to Super Bazar (which is in CP) via INA (which is the market opposite Dilli Haat), also stops at the same place. Gargi College is a minute-long walk away from this bus stop. However, the service of both these buses is not very impressive. Bus Route No. 544 which connects Badarpur to Sarojini Nagar also passes by the college.
Popular Courses
Gargi College offers an interesting assortment of courses, which cut across diverse fields of study. These include Botany, Political Science, Commerce, Economics, Elementary Education, German, Psychology, English, Hindi, Microbiology, etc. Of these, the most well-known are the science courses, although Psychology, English and Commerce are also quite sought after. Another paper that was introduced very recently, and met with a good response was Business Economics.
Admission Procedure
General Category
Admission into Gargi College is based entirely on marks secured by students in their board examinations. For elementary education, however, it is centrally managed by the university.
Sports and ECA Category
The students are not required to fill a separate form even for admission through the ECA and sports quotas. In order to secure admission through these categories, applicants have to register themselves with the college on a given date (usually in the first two weeks of July). Trials and interviews are held on the same day, and results are announced within the following week. Students must carry their portfolios, original documents specified by the institution, etc.
Infrastructure
Gargi College is divided into three main blocks: the commerce block, the science block and the arts block. Further, it is equipped with an average canteen, a recently expanded computer laboratory, a general and reference library as well as smaller libraries of the Psychology and English departments. An auditorium is going to be constructed in the college this year.
Out of Station Students
As Gargi doesn’t have any facility for on-campus housing, outstation students have to find a roof on their heads by themselves. There are PGs around the college where many of them stay.
Add-on Courses
Gargi College offers primarily two types of add-on courses: academic enrichment programmes and career intensive courses. The former category includes some very out of the ordinary courses, like Art Appreciation, Education for Peace Building, Vedic Mathematics, Historical Tourism, etc. The latter consists of job-oriented courses like Diploma in Banking and Financial Services, Diploma in Advertising and Marketing Communication, Certificate and Diploma programmes in foreign languages, etc. Further, there are outsourced courses of IGNOU and EMPI Business School of which Gargi College is a centre. All add-on courses are open to outsiders as well.
