In accordance with the success of past projects, the team LSR was granted a pro-bono stall under the name “Women of India” on recommendation by Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development.

The Central Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Department, Government of India recommended the project for participation.

This project by Enactus, LSR created opportunity for underprivileged women of the society by employing them to stitch Phulkari Patiala Salwars. In the past, these women have also been tied up with boutiques all over the country to help them get regular orders.

Jahnavi Taneja, President of Enactus, Lady Sri Ram College of Women says, “These women who earlier used to stitch clothes for themselves, now stitch it for the outside world. We have not only trained them with the art of stitching but also provided them a national platform to showcase their latent talents and face the outside world as leading women entrepreneurs. They are now regular income earners and need not be completely dependent on their male counterparts.”

Maneka Gandhi also visited the stall on November 14 and appreciated the effort of Enactus Team. Aashima Arora, who welcomed Maneka Gandhi at the stall said, “She not only liked the salwars and their bright colors but also acknowledged our efforts with her words. Her support motivated the team to take the project to a next level and seek maximum audience for the well-acclaimed project. Ms. Gandhi also suggested us better ways to present our products to the buyers.” Suchi Soin, Manager, Enactus India (Northern Region) also joined the LSR girls at the stall.

In addition to phulkaari patiala salwars, the stall also displayed handicraft products made by weavers of Varanasi under the new project which the team will kick start in the near future, in association with the Government of India and its development projects.

Enactus LSR, by adopting this project aims to link the artisans directly to the consumers through effective marketing and ensure that the craftsmen get a fair price for their products by eliminating intermediaries. It also aims to facilitate innovation in this field and preserve the art of this area by empowering the artisans, socially and economically. The team aims to train women in weaving and market their products and have collaborated with a local NGO called Human Welfare Association to conduct this activity.

Neha Dewan, another team member said, “The initiative at Delhi Haat has witnessed an overwhelming response and it was great to see how the buyers still value handicrafts despite the advent of machinery and technology.” The team managed to earn a substantial amount of revenue during eight days at Dilli Haat.

‘Right to Accommodation’ group organized a seven-day hunger strike for rent regulation at North Campus from 31st October – 6th November 2014. The protest was organised in order to implement the provisions of Rent Control Act, especially receipt for the rent paid and fixation of rent in the private accommodations of Delhi University campus.

Six people including a few students sat on the hunger strike at Christian Colony at Patel Chest, North Campus where over seven days, various tenants of Christian Colony organized themselves to fight for rent regulation. Candle march and torch march was set out in adjoining areas like Mukherjee Nagar and Vijay Nagar where tenants from these areas also joined the protest.

Need for rent regulation

Delhi University’s north campus houses over 2,00,000 students from all over the country but the total number of hostel seats in all the campus colleges are 6000. 1,94,000 students live in private accommodation in the campus, with maximum availing the single room accommodations. Moreover, other students preparing for the competitive exams also reside in the campus.

According to the statistics provided by ‘Right to Accommodation’ team, one single room accommodation with attached bathroom ranges from Rs. 4500/- to Rs. 15000/- in the north campus.  However, if the matter of rent regulation goes to the court, the rent will be fixed somewhere around Rs. 1000/-

According to the statement by Right to Accommodation team, students from the North-East form the maximum proportion of the crowd that suffers. The same room will be rented out to a student from the North East for 7000/- which is given to a student from North India for 4000/- only. Reasons like these saw better participation by students from the east to protest.

Demands of the protest

The group on strike demands proper enforcement of Delhi Rent Control Act 1958, which states that the property owner should provide a receipt for the rent received. Praveen Singh, Convenor of Right to Accommodation says, “We want the receipt system to be introduced because that will help us give proofs to the rent controller to fix the rent. Otherwise, all the money is going into owners’ pocket as black money.”

Praveen Singh himself was also on the hunger strike along with Sachin from Manipur, Mukesh, Neil and journalism students from Ambedkar College, Adil and Manish Bhartiya. Adil and Manish were also hospitalised on 4th November as a result of weakness due to hunger strike.

The protest also saw students and leaders of different party factions coming together for the cause of “tenants’ exploitation”. It included Manipur State BJP president, DUTA president Ms. Nandita Narayan and other teachers. Nandita Narayan, expressing her concern over the issue said, “Any central university across the world has proper accommodation facilities arranged for its students. If Delhi University wishes to be called as the central university, it should provide adequate hostel facilities and should have appropriate understanding with the local residents. Landlords prefer students because it is easy to get the property vacated, so in return students deserve the gesture of reasonable rents.”

Results on fixture of rent

The strike ended with an agreement amongst the tenants where the rents have been fixed at Rs. 1500/- for a single room. If the landlord refuses to accept this amount, he/she is liable to issue a receipt.

Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, Advocate and Legal consultant for the matter says, “Fixation of rent at Rs. 1500/- is an interim measure before the judicial processes happen. Meanwhile now, the tenants have organized themselves and they all gather if anyone of them is being harassed by the landlord. Proprietors by now have also tried to negotiate on prices, as they are not keen on giving the receipts.”

Right to Accommodation also plans to file a PIL in the upcoming week requesting the rent controller to look into the matter.

Mr. Pranjal Srivastava, the College President 2014-15 of Hans Raj College, believes that college unions must fill in the scope for improvement that each college has in terms of  infrastructure and matters of student welfare. Pranjal who is a final year commerce student at Hans Raj College, wishes to restore the lost brand name of college.

Presenting to you, Pranjal Srivastava in conversation with our correspondent Iresh Gupta.

Iresh: What was your reaction when you got to know the election results? Was it expected?

Pranjal: The victory came as a relief for me. The burden of my entire team rested on my shoulders and I had to justify that. The victory vindicated our decision to contest in these elections after losing for the last two years. Honestly, I expected the decision to be in our favour seeing the work put in by my team in the days leading to the election. So I’d say yes, it was on expected lines.

Iresh: Why do you think you were chosen?

Pranjal: I talked about trust and faith everywhere I went for canvassing. I trusted my fellow students to take the right decision and in return they trusted me. Quid Pro Quo!

Iresh: What are the areas where Hans Raj needs massive improvement according to you?

Pranjal: Hans Raj stands above the rest when it comes to academics. It has to grow in terms of getting a brand name for itself in terms of the events it organizes and the image it has in students’ minds. I, as President aim to initiate this process and hope that future post holders continue on my path.

Iresh: Tell us about your biggest agenda. Is it the annual cultural fest?

Pranjal: Popular perception of a student is that organizing the annual cultural fest is the only thing a union does in a college. As President, I wholly reject this opinion. On the other hand, as a student, I want the biggest fest Hans Raj has ever seen.

Iresh: As a President, what all has been done till now, and tell us the planned activity too.

Pranjal: With Wifi working, one thing can be crossed off students’ list. Basic cleanliness of college campus and renovation of Girls’ Common Room will follow. The preparations for Confluence, the annual college festival will also start simultaneously.

Iresh: Why were you interested in Student Politics? Any plans to go ahead in country’s politics?

Pranjal: Hans Raj Hostel gave me reasons to believe why student politics is necessary in terms of initiating changes at the grass-root level but going ahead in country’s politics requires family backing and sadly I do not enjoy such support.

Iresh: College President often means skipping classes, doing all the work and being specifically responsible. Do you think it’s a big sacrifice in terms of academics?

Pranjal: Honestly, being President is a big burden on one’s academics. That effect is less seen on me since B.Com(H) is not that tough a course to handle. I contested in the elections knowing that this will have an effect on my academics but I also knew that I can manage both with a little extra effort.

Iresh: Lastly, sum up the characteristics that a successful college union should possess?

Pranjal: A successful College Union is one which can raise issues faced by students, a place where students’ voices are heard. College life is a transitional phase and utmost care must be taken to do the same,  successfully. Hans Raj is a really good college but there’s always scope for improvement and that scope exists for Hans Raj too. Union should focus on activities that must trigger all round development of the student and not only academics.

“The moment I empower a woman, I empower a family”
-Dr. Kiran Bedi

Law graduate from Faculty of Law (Delhi University), Dr. Kiran Bedi was the first woman IPS officer to join the police force. In conversation with our correspondent, the former national tennis champion talks about her journey from being a student to a lecturer and then serving the police force before finally taking on to the social sector. Anchor of the famous Indian television show, Aap Ki Kachehri, Dr Kiran also expresses her distaste for politics and strives to serve the poor and underprivileged throughout her life.

Presenting to you, Dr. Kiran Bedi in conversation with our correspondent Iresh Gupta (Photographed by Kashish Madan)

Iresh: Hello Dr. Kiran! As the first woman IPS officer, tell us about what galvanized you or inspired you to take up policing?

Dr. Kiran: Hi Iresh! I guess the force that attracted me towards policing was my sensitivity to injustice and related issues. Also, I was a very patriotic person, a person who would get goose-pimples and cry while singing the national anthem. Moreover, I was a cop at the age of 14 as an NCC cadet. Till the age of 18, I wore a uniform everyday for my NCC parade. I was already into the system of uniform, a life that is very difficult and organized, yet enjoyable. I became a police officer to experience this joy every day.

Iresh: But the era of 50s-60s was not an era for girls. So were your parents also keen to see you in that uniform?

Dr. Kiran: I am a product of my parents. I was not like an isolated rose. I was part of the garden where my parents were the gardeners. In those days of 50s and 60s, my three sisters and me had carved a niche for ourselves because our parents were continuously nutritioning us.

Iresh: Were you not scared of the risks involved? You also then planned to pursue law after taking charge as the police officer. How did this come up?

Dr. Kiran: My parents brought me up to take risks. They did not make ship for the harbour; they made ship for the sea (smiles).

Law was something I wanted to do because it was strengthening my own way of serving. I could not join morning classes so I joined evening classes in Delhi University and combined my subject with my profession. In addition, studying law being a police officer was so interesting because I knew the application of law, all I had to understand is section of law.

Iresh: You pursued law from Faculty of Law, Delhi University. Would you like to share with us your memories as a student?

Dr. Kiran: The fact is that I am still a student. You cannot be anything but a student all your life. I read a lot, I write regularly and I constantly research. Education leaves hunger for knowledge. I will be a student for rest of my life. As far as Delhi University is concerned, I have great fond memories. I am still associated with the place as I often go back to talk in colleges and share my experiences.

Iresh: A few days back you visited LSR for a session by NSS. Tell us about your experience there.

Dr. Kiran: It was a very detailed session. I had a good time answering the questions. The best part was that they asked great questions on the topic “Women Safety and Security”. We discussed matters like dressing, different treatment of brothers and sisters at home and everyday issues like the ones faced in metros. I am glad that I was there. I was an experience for life.

Iresh: Relative to your session yesterday, tell us why do you think girls still are ambivalent about coming to Delhi for studies or jobs?

Dr. Kiran: Parents I feel hold back girls, wherein they should hold back boys. Girls have all the right to do everything. They feel unsafe because it is in their minds as well. There has to be reorientation of their own mind, attitude and belief. They need to speak and tell everyone that they are not weak; it is someone else who is immature and doing all this. At the same time, they need to take proper precautions  and they need to understand that if parents are stopping them to wear certain kind of clothes, it is not because they want to restrict them or because of their gender, it is because they want to protect them.

Internships
Kiran Bedi invites summer and winter internships for both her foundations – Navjyoti India Foundation and India Vision Foundation for community work, rural and social work, prison assignments, journalism, IT and education. To connect and apply click here.

Iresh: Would you like to tell us about your current projects and activities?

Dr. Kiran: Iresh, I have lots of things going but what takes away the chunk of my time are my two foundations called Navjyoti India Foundation and India Vision Foundation which are some 26 and 20 years old respectively. We have trained and qualified social workers, teachers and councillors who have been running these schools for the poor training them to do entrepreneurship, business development, career orientation and skills development.

We have thousands tenth and twelfth class students whom we do not let drop out of studies. Instead, we go by their skills and enable them. So I been mentoring these two young adults for long now and we also work with villages, prisons, slums, women and children for community development and social empowerment.

Iresh: In the end, tell us on how do you look back at your journey today?

Dr. Kiran: If I look at my journey, I would say that I have not wasted a day. It has been a life of huge personal achievements. It is without having lost a day and getting progressive with time. Every day has been a preparation for the next day. There has never been a pressure of winning or losing, it is just about doing it the right way. It has been a journey for a better tomorrow (smiles).

Iresh: Thank you Dr. Kiran. It was great talking to you. DU Beat wishes you all the best for both your foundations and all the projects in the near future.

Dr. Kiran: Thank you Iresh. It was nice talking to you as well.

The student body in power at Delhi University proclaimed something substantial for the students after organizing protests against live-in-relationships and love jihad earlier this month. On 17th October 2014, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarathi Parishad (ABVP) and Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) held a dharna outside Arts’ Faculty demanding reintroduction of re-evaluation, special chance and supplementary exams.

According to ABVP’s press statement, Delhi University’s administration invited party leaders for a meeting post the protest, where the officials agreed to restart re-evaluation. The student party has been promised by DU administration to receive an official notification this Monday, i.e, 20th October 2014 whereas matters of special chance and supplementary exams garnered no response as of now.

“The rights of those studying in University will now be restored. After the introduction of semester system, the plight of students has never been addressed. Final year students end up wasting one year due to one exams. For them, re-evaluation is imperative.” -Parvesh Malik, Vice President, DUSU

ABVP raised these matters earlier as well throughout the fight for Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) and the limelight followed during the election period. Saket Bahuguna, Delhi State Secretary for ABVP says, “University is not VC’s kingdom, it is just for the students. The way we forced the administration to bend for student welfare at the time of FYUP, we will fight for student rights now as well.”

Dharna was addressed by the leaders of ABVP and few senior representatives.

The decision of Delhi University administration was welcomed by the student body and demand for special chance and supplementary exams is again proffered.
