A lot of us must be struggling with those extra exams to give this semester. While the already main papers were a task to battle, reappearing papers is not that unique a task. For those who have failed exams in the past, there isn’t much choice, whereas for those who voluntarily give improvement examinations, be wary. One must choose wisely a paper which is scoring, if the past marks scored in them were average. No matter how less, appearing for an exam you scored horribly in the past, may just turn out to be a grave mistake since you already have to bear the burden of atleast four first-timers.

Generalized here are a few tips to use while preparing for such papers.

1. Revise regularly

Well, nobody does that, do they? The ones who do are smart and have good time management skills. However, it won’t kill you if you don’t.

2. Use the mid-semester break

No doubt how busy you are during that week, you know you have to appear for more exams this semester. And not many of us start preparing for the main papers of this semester in that time, a general excuse being ‘syllabus is not yet done with’. Revise the syllabus in that week, at least go through the books, and you will find your speed surprising. Practice those questions and examples you left last time.

3. Practice ten-years

Infact, practice questions, if not as many as you can, then at least those you think are important. You have already been there once, and by now you might have an idea what is important and what kind of questions are asked.

4. Solve your question paper

Do not forget that awesome paper that fetched you not-so-awesome marks. Solve it. It is imperative that you do. You may not know where you lost marks, but then atleast test yourself. You may be able to solve those questions you could not, during those three hours.

5. Seek help

First, do not be ashamed of reappearing in a paper. Let your friends and teachers know. Ask them for help. Friends did better than you because their concepts were clear. Teachers taught you and have experience. Now that you have a second attempt, be wise.

Give yourself a break from those monotonous subjects of your semester, and use the syllabus of your reappearing paper as an escape, for a while, and then return to those subjects. Improvement papers are not a new thing, some do it out of choice, others for improving their average. It is a pretty common phenomenon, make the best of it. And remember, if you don’t appear for the improvement exam, you marks from the earlier exam will be considered.

Good luck!

With the commencement of the new session, the final year conundrums are already catching pace for many students with early placement sessions in various Delhi University colleges.

While the first surge of placements has mostly been for Commerce students, other DU courses await to see which companies will come on campus this year. Colleges like Jesus and Mary College, Kirori Mal College, Hans Raj College and Indraprastha College for Women have already started playing hosts to recruiting companies.

Deloitte recently offered an average package of 4 lakhs to 26 B. Com. (Honours) final year students in the Auditing Department at Jesus and Mary College. In Kirori Mal College, a few students have been placed for a package close to 3.2 lakhs as Audit Associates with Global Talent Hub.

As Ernst and Young, Deloitte, McKinsey and Keppler have been organizing continuous Soft Skills Workshops in almost all DU colleges, Teach for India has also started holding orientations for its 2 year Fellowship in various colleges.

While IP College awaits placements by Ernst and Young for its students, Hans Raj College will soon host Bain and Company bringing an offer of 10 lakhs and Deloitte bringing an offer of 4.5 lakhs.

The early start of the placement season is keeping college Placement Cells on their toes. As the start of the session has begun with grand openings, one can only hope for better offers in the future.

I have never read an author with such devotion as Anuja Chauhan. Undoubtedly my favourite, I have found myself totally mesmerised by her books. A creator of four stories set in different times and backgrounds, her latest is a sequel to Those Pricey Thakur Girls. A prodigy in the advertisement industry, the lay-man can also remember her for her works like Pepsi’s ‘Oye Bubbly!’ campaign.

Those Pricey Thakur Girls ended with a short paragraph to excite readers about what is coming next. It had been two years since I had read Pricey, and in the period I was waiting, I reread the three books again and Googled the release of this book. Much to my delight, she failed to disappoint me!

The book begins with Samar, the hot-shot new director in Bollywood and quickly leads to the inhabitants of 16, Hailey Road, Delhi- Bonita and her tailors. If you have read the previous book, you would know who BJ and Mamta was, and the ABCDE daughters. Bonu was orphaned at a young age and adopted by her maternal grandparents. She is all grown up now and runs her business.

But BJ’s death turns the story as he leaves asking Samar to divide his house into five hissas for his daughters A,B,C,D, and E. The story cleverly and interestingly revolves around property disputes, family disputes, fake wills, illegal acquisitions, courts, property dealers, and item songs (or, a party song). In between all this drama, bloom two love stories- of the two step-cousins Samar and Bonu, and of childhood friends Steesh and Eshwari. Chases, denials, psycho sisters, pervert friends this book is a complete package.

Not revealing too much of the story, I would recommend it for a good read. Anuja’s USP for me is that she has till now based stories on a variety of backdrops- politics, cricket, media, real estate. Yet, I have enjoyed reading the technicalities with such interest that I might have never read Harry Potter with. However, the fact that her story is based mostly in Delhi makes it more enjoyable, because one can relate it to places one has seen.

Carefully chosen words, not too fancy that I am forced to use a dictionary, anyone can read it. It is one of those books that you just cannot put down. The story has its twists, just when you thought that the kiss means everything is going to be all peaches and cream, the love birds split. She calls out to your imagination, and you realize her stories are so natural and so real! This is one book that provides closure to the story, you are not left with an imagine-yourself ending. Her writing style is what I admire the most- Hindi + English, and my favourite is the funny, but now commonly used obscene words, with utmost causality. Because only in an Anuja Chauhan book will you find, “Tu chutiya hai!” written in a common dialogue.

So, whether you are happy with life or not, read it! I have, and I know what effect her stories can have on the mind. However, be cautious, there is no clue to another book, so you may be left wanting for more. Until then, do it my way, re-read it!

Exams are that time of the semester when you are genuinely expected to study, in fact you too expect yourself to be in the study mode. However, when you take a break don’t go near movie channels on your TV or that ‘Movies’ folder in your laptop. It is catastrophic! One movie you think of watching for a while will keep you glued till the credits roll, and worse is the mind-space it leaves you in. However, if you do end up curled in front of a screen, here are a few must not watch movies:

The Social Network-

You don’t want to get into the illusion that dropping out of college is cool and more successful. Exams can give you these ideas, but you surely don’t want proof, do you?

the-social-network-movie-poster

21 and Ocean’s Eleven series-

Wondering about that royal life in Vegas, or being a professional con artist, is proof you are bitten by the bug of movie life. Save yourself before you lose out on your marks.

3-1409

Fukrey-

You don’t want to bribe the guard of your college in leaking the question papers, and end up in a mess, like being expelled or disappointed. And semester end is surely not the time to think about ways of excusing yourself from exams.

M_Id_393966_Fukrey

Student of the Year-

Ratta Maar’ and ‘Jai Mata Di’ are certainly not the things one should rely on during exams. Take no wrong clues, it is a Karan Johar movie after all, so don’t let the extravagance of a wonderful educational life got to your head.

soty

Limitless-

When we say no to drugs, we also say no to fantasizing about them. If you keep fantasizing about a drug that makes you super smart, well your exam can be in jeopardy then.

limitless-poster-7

Munnabhai MBBS-

The cellphone trick is too old, do not try it. The flying squad could be around. Another a strict no to sending an elder for your paper, there is photo identity on your admit card, remember. Also, not all of us can become successful by not studying, so don’t get any ideas.

mmbbs1_8x6

3 Idiots-

The education structure is flawed, but now that you are in it, deal with it. Please don’t think about tricks to distract other people, rather concentrate on your course.

School of Rock-

Apart from mentioning that Maths is not important, it also has a timetable consisting of artists and other music genre stuff. Surely not the right time to go into Rock Mode.

school-of-rock-cd-cover-photo-you-will-not-believe-what-the-school-of-rock-cast-looks-like-now

10 Things I Hate About You-

Thinking about your childhood crushes and why Heath Ledger is dead, or flashing your teachers during the exam, means you need to clear your head, now!

10_Things_Soundtrack

Harry Potter Series-

The magical world is wonderful, it is far more interesting, and there exist things like Felix Felicis, the Time Turner and Weasley Brothers that can ruin your study mode completely.

Harry_Potter_and_the_Goblet_of_Fire_Poster

Bad Teacher-

We all wish there were teachers who showed movies in class, but that does not happen, does it? And, there is no Cameron Diaz making you solve the exact paper for practice.

Bad-Teacher-2011

Dead Poets Society-

Yes, the course seems mostly redundant during this time, but this movie can inspire you most to tear those pages from your books in frustration, and make you cry for Robin Williams, especially now that he is actually dead.

dead-poets-society-poster

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani-

Life is not just about going places with friends and finding love, you need to make a career first. And with such hot actors and peppy songs, you can find yourself in a utopia soon.

New folder1

Wake Up Sid-

Deal with it, Sid’s dad tried to employ him, yet he left home. Now, you don’t want to do that if your results are not satisfying. This is not a back-up option. So study.

img

Horror movies-

If you cannot deal with them, don’t test your guts during this crucial time. It will be very difficult for you to concentrate, if you keep looking over your cupboard or waiting for some possible noises.

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) held a three-day public hearing, from 30th March to 1st April, against the DU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dinesh Singh. Students, teachers and parents shared their experiences of the academic situation and highlighted the illegalities and financial irregularities committed by the DU VC. Students representing All India Students Association also sang songs of hope and struggle and raised slogans for the VC’s immediate removal.

Students on the first day highlighted problems such as their experiences in regular colleges and School of Open Learning (SOL), underlining the neglect and academic fraud perpetuated in the name of restructuring and reforms. The teachers spoke about the disastrous impact of FYUP and semester system, and the callous manner in which DU disregarded all AICTE norms related to technical support, course content, class-sizes and student-teacher ratio while it merely renamed existing B.Sc. courses into B.Tech, thus precipitating the crisis of AICTE approvals.

On the second day, the illegalities committed by the VC were discussed. DU’s repeated attempts to deny due reservations to students in admissions and teachers in permanent appointments, pointed to the violation of the reservation policy in many colleges.  EC members spoke about how the statutory violations were deemed necessary by the VC when he realized that the Statutes and Ordinances of the DU Act do not allow authorities to bring about unilateral and arbitrary changes. Brazen violations and irregularities, which included the misuse of Emergency Powers to victimize teachers in all routine and service matters were talked about. Findings of the RTI responses highlighted a major scam of over 170 crores of OBC funds being diverted towards purchase of laptops, and funds meant for the development of teaching facilities in departments.

The third day discussed the VC’s overall intolerance to ideas and heterogeneous ways of thinking that, subsequently, had a disastrous impact on the standards of teaching-learning. It was also described how the statutory bodies had been systematically robbed of their independence.Principals have got encouraged because of misgovernance by the VC and have, in turn tried to suppress voices of teachers who raise issues. Teachers who worked on adhoc basis for many years have been recently pushed out because the DU administration has not respected reservation roster, the effect being that rosters are being manipulated in college.

Teachers and students present at the three day public hearing concluded that the worst victims of the repressive governance and violation of democratic processes are students. Repressive governance put in place to bulldoze recent academic restructuring including Semester System, FYUP and Examination Reforms has jeopardized careers of lakhs of students. Through the jansunwai, the university community has once again urged the Visitor to take into account the abuse of Office by DU VC and act on the matter immediately.

Gramya Manthan, an annual initiative by Youth Alliance organization is a nine day rural immersion journey which takes 40 change agents to remote villages in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh. During the course of nine rigorous days, the change agents adapt their lifestyles to those of the villagers, often staying with local communities. This goes hand-in-hand with workshops, discussions and activities aimed at nourishing empathy and facilitating reflection. The participants also take part in on-ground activities. Currently in its fourth year of running, this year the program will be from 13th June to 21st June.  The program aims at bridging the rural-urban divide and creating a space to observe, understand and learn the diverse realities of India. The idea is to bring the youth in sync with the complex actualities of rural life, thus allowing them a platform where they at least begin to think on pertinent issues and strive towards a more informed understanding of life in villages. Gramya Manthan is dedicated to developing social leaders; well-rounded youngsters who are equipped with leadership skills to solve the challenges faced by Indian villages. 253005_495462837131044_1579377199_n

A fun-filled turn of events took place on 12th February for Enactus Indraprastha College for Women as it celebrated a year of its existence as Enactus Day. The event, which was a milieu of activities, was only for IPCW students. The three events for the day began with a Master Class by Mr. Kamal Seth, Chief Happiness Officer of Human Circle and a successful entrepreneur associated with Letsintern and Internshala, who is also the founder of InternPreneurship. The Master Class gave budding entrepreneurs in the campus the freedom and inspiration to ‘do what they love’.

The Master Class was followed by Impresa-The Logo Making Competition. Enactus IPCW, which has come with its new project Sashakt-Aipan, gave  artists the chance to exclusively design an official logo for the project. This was also followed by  ‘Bigger and Better- The Barter Game’, a team event which required each team to upgrade the same item they were initially given via only Barter . The initial item that was a board pin was finally upgraded to items like a Cyber Café, Diamond Ring, Scooty, emotionally-attached gifts etc.

The event concluded with a ceremonious cake-cutting ceremony, wherein the 35-member strong Enactus IPCW sang the ‘Happy Enactus Day’ song and cheered for having achieved all the milestones of the day.
