Asmat NGO stemmed out of a very simple desire — one to make a difference at the grassroot level. Majority of India lives in its villages and the people living there are grappling with multitudes of issues. That was the starting point of their tryst with Soda, a small village in Rajasthan, famous for electing the first female Sarpanch in India with a MBA degree, Chhavi Rajawat.

The NGO was started by students of Lady Shri Ram College and is now being run by students from Delhi University, all with a common passion which is to be the change they wish to see in the world.  They conducted their first volunteer program in the summer of 2013 and after three successful programs, they are gearing up for their winter volunteer program, to be held in the month of December.

Over the course of their engagement with the residents of Soda, they have focused on Gender sensitization, Governance sessions with a special focus on the Right to Information Act, Sessions with the women on menstrual hygiene, Pension surveys, Non- academic teaching with the children, Women’s Self Help Groups (SHG’s) and Farmers Surveys To attempt implementing a successful model of Organic Farming. They also work upon street plays and similar initiatives.

Street shopping in Delhi is as famous as its street food, which clearly shows how ‘ shopping ‘ for Delhiites is more of a necessity than a leisure activity. The most famous of the many being ‘Sarojini Nagar’, listed in every travel brochure, it is a pilgrimage to the ultimate destination of raw, cheap street fashion for every DU girl! It proudly owes its popularity to our very own Honey Singh. Every day even when the sun seems harshly strong, the lanes and by-lanes that define the market are bustling from 9 to 9. And being elbowed is something you get used to after a while! To many who have this dilemma as to why Sarojini Nagar as an all time shopping hideout, we at Wooplr, are here to solve all your mysteries :

Happy Pockets!

They might not be very good with their bargaining skills. They might as well be brand-dolls, but, at Sarojini, they surely know one thing — everything here is defined by just one rule — under Rs.500. So, whether a denim jumper or a classy pair of loafers, this DU girl will wring every bit of the vendors’ vows and get things moving her way. The tip you must follow is ‘more quantity in less money!’

– Bandanas to Birthday Dresses, you get it all!

The advantage of street shopping over store shopping is that you will have to rush from one brand to another to find all the stuff that you actually need to make your looks. What if you get it all at one place and get the best? You shouldn’t be surprised if you actually find your idol birthday dress at Sarojini some time, for, it is known for the blings and for the sheers as well. What better peace than shopping like you’re taking a stroll on the roads!

– The Daddy of India’s best junk accessories!

If Accessorize or Forever21 are your favorite brands for accessories, let’s meet the Daddy of all! As astonishing as it seems, but girls from all over India have Sarojini in their shopping bucket list for accessories if not for anything. As for the girls at Delhi University, you should know how crazy they are for accessories when they know they can get around 5 smoky neckpieces in just 500 bucks and that too, the most exquisite ones!

– Paint your nails rainbow!

Yet another amazing feature of this market is how you will find vendors with tiny stacks almost flooding with nail polishes at a distance of every 100 miles. This is not the catch yet, the real story is that you can buy as many shades as you want and still not feel guilty about it! Wondering why? 20-40 bucks is all you need to pay in return of your favorite luscious shades of polishes. The quality though shouldn’t be compared to sober brands, but, it’s Sarojini, so you need to buy it all!

DSC01775.JPG

– Street shopping and no street food? Impossible!

While you burn loads and loads of calories in running around and bargaining till your throat gets sore, this market will not let you leave with a dull face! The highlight since over a decade has been the ‘banta’ lime soda that you get at every intersection to quench your thirsts. We bet you can’t have just one! And, when these girls are all done and dusted, you will find them at the other end of the market, where there is an array of food stalls serving delicious street food!

The Freshers’ Party is an adrenaline rush for every DU student. The post admission wait for the colleges to open, is more about the party rather than their choice of electives.

Students usually prep up and devote their time hunting for the best outfits that could work their way to fame at the Freshers’ Party.

They humbly abide by the rule of first impressions and dress up like there’s no tomorrow.

All the colleges managed to quench their bustling energy and excitement by organizing the best freshers’ parties for them. With an all-access pass to the sizzling most events, we at Wooplr too, tip-toed into every college doing some style search to spot the best fashion at Delhi University. As this ravishing season ends, we bring you the most trendy freshers parties of DU :

  1. Institute of Home Economics

‘Red for committed, Yellow for complicated and Green for single!’, when the theme itself spells out some noise, there needs to be no more validation whatsoever! To our surprise, more than 70% of the girls in the college were wearing red, and some also followed the odd combination of yellow and red to express their on and off relationship status. The stars of the party though were the members of the student union whose  style had us glued from start to end. What impressed us the most was that the girls at IHE did not just stick with the mainstream trend of ‘little red dresses’, but, were up for experiments of all kind. From jumpers to drapes, it was all well served on the platter. And, greens? Well, the universe has less space for singlehood, we think!

2. Lady Irwin College

You know a party when you see one, especially one where girls are decked up wearing heels and their pouts. But at Lady Irwin College, it was something else! It was about ‘literally’ letting loose and dancing their heart out. It wasn’t about first impressions but the focus was on just being yourself and having fun while at it. We spotted a handful of girls in maxi dresses, skater skirts apart from the usual crop tops paired with high-waist lowers. The girls here, do know the ‘current-world’ party ritual of staying casual yet classy, simple yet sexy! This effortlessly cool styling seemed to strike a chord with their seniors who were rather joyous than judgemental!

3. Kalindi College

Over the years, Kalindi College has made sure to revive the Indian hearts of the young girls out there and promote the theme of ‘Bollywood’. It was a great sight to see a bunch of young ladies draped in the most colorful and unique sarees. Sarees paired with interesting blouses, they surely showcased the richness of Indian wear. One cannot ignore the beauty of ethnic wear. There’s rap and hip-hop everywhere but there’s one thumka to die it all down at Kalindi!

4. College of Vocational Studies

It would be absolutely unfair for all the pretty senoritas, if we don’t tell them where the most trendy men are in DU. The boys at CVS did leave us amazed by their wardrobe choices. It was all about tight fitted shirts with ripped muscles, ankle length trousers, lusty loafers and classy suspenders. Dressed as gents just until the beat of the drums and they were simply Punjabi after that. They did not really feel the need of dhol, for, they’d ace their bhangra on any track. The girls took comfort in their trusted maxi dresses and LBD’s. The Debonair Divas and Jovial Gentlemen totally got our thumbs-up!

5. Maitreyi College

A college that is always known for its fashion definitely cannot miss out from our list now, can it? Maitreyi seemed to follow the mantra “My Life, My Fashion” which saw students stepping out in styles that suited them the most. The cutout trend seemed to be a major hit among the freshers this year. Be it cutout backs, crops or a peek-a-boo of their curves, they were surely very comfortable in their skin. The highlight, though, were the feather earcuffs that we noticed added charm to a majority of the looks! The seniors here looked no less than the newly entered freshers with their styling which tells us that the fashion tales only get better with every passing year.

With the issue attracting multitudes of attention with every passing day, the Dadri lynching incident has been a subject of regret ever since it surfaced. The primary question in each mind is whether this is the kind of development and leadership India wishes to progress under. While communal tension is something that has always been existing in India, the exploitation of this tension to such gravity is what concerns everyone. DU i

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) organised its Executive meeting earlier this week, where all members unanimously condemned the incident. The members expressed utter shock on the fact that the activities of the mob, which took away the life of that 50 year old man, were pushed by rumours that the family had eaten beef. The Association believes that this tragedy highlights the rising climate of hatred and tension across the nation.

Prof. Satish Deshpande, a DUTA member remarked, “I believe that under the present government, such incidents are not new. It’s the climate in which these incidents occur which is dangerous. The idea that the victim deserves such treatment is something of grave concern. The aberrational element is that the wrong people feel empowered, especially because of the fact that the government is not actively negating or condemning the incident. Strict law and order is needed to combat such situations.”

Areeb Mohammed, a student from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, remarked that incidents like Dadri should not be allowed to disrupt the communal harmony of the country. “We are a free and secular country and that is what I’m proud of. We should raise our voice against such incidents to ensure they do not happen again.”

Whether it’s a tournament where reaching the top and earning those big bucks is the top priority, or just another fest where winning becomes a subsidiary agenda; outstation trips with your society members from college turn out to be memorable events that’ll be etched in your memory for a lifetime. Irrespective of whether it is a group of five or fifteen, such trips are a wholesome package of fun, bonding and exhilaration.

Endless conversations at the middle of the night, sometimes extending till the visibility of faint sunlight bring out so many untold stories that certainly change the way you looked at each of the members who practiced with you everyday. So all of a sudden, the apparently emotionally strong girl you thought isn’t bothered by emotions turns out to have a soft spot too and the dark and twisted Meredith Grey of real life has a story to leave everyone stunned. On a much lighter note, there are stories of seniors messing up lives, missing their trains and making up songs about random people that’ll tickle your funny bone till weeks later.

Amidst all of this, there’s loads of exploration: in terms of food (and booze and leaves, get the reference!). When your entire contingent is starving in the middle of the night, even the most fake double-cheese pizza that’s nothing but garnished extra cheese over a pizza base and cadbury-cheese sandwich (as wrong as that may sound) shall taste like delights. Meeting new people, getting to hear their version of life and observing the vibrancy of a new culture are somethings that come tagging along.

You might find the party spread across various rooms of the accommodation. At once, the first floor would be the scene of all action and drama. There would be one of the slightly dazed (for obvious reasons!) participants acting as a bouncer while others would be witnessed partying away to glory. These scenes shift from one location to other till no living soul is found sleeping, even at 4 a.m. in the morning.

For some unknown reason, everyone manages to make it for the tournament/fest for their respective performance. The learning graph of such events is substantially high as you witness people flocking down from all across the country. There are new contacts (for miscellaneous reasons) and multiple opportunities to learn.

Train journeys to and from the destination are certainly the highlight of the entire trip. Unending gossip sessions and a mandated ghost stories session act as suffices to the traditional charm of the journey. Expect no mercy when it comes to sleeping because a.) people are not going to let you, and b.) even if you do manage to slide away somehow, the rest with you shall make it a point that neither you (nor the fellow passengers) drift off.

Expecting it to be an event of a lifetime? Be prepared for the following:

1. Eating at the most random hours at the most random places.
2. Your room’s gonna be a mess and you won’t be able to deal with it.
3. You may or may not get a chance to bathe, considering all you did last night (this statement is open for interpretation)
4. Thou shall get no sleep.
5. No matter how shady it may get, you’re going to be in love with your society post that!
