It’s the time of admissions again and many of you will be apartment hunting. And while opting for hostels or pg’s is easier, many cannot or simply do not make that choice. There are a lot of things to consider while searching for a good apartment. It is never good to rush and you might have to look at a lot of places before finding the right one.

So here a few tips to save yourself of a miserable place to stay. Because after a long day all we want is to come back home, to that place where we find peace.

  1. SEARCH A LOT – Do not limit your searches to two or three places. I know it is terribly hot and that might dry out your patience faster but when you find that perfect place, it will be worth it.  It is good to look within a range of five to six apartments. That usually gives you a pretty good idea of what you want.

  1. LOCATION – This is very important. You do not want living in a place with limited facilities and connectivity. It is up to you to judge whether the area has adequate facilities or not. Also it is always better to live in an area having more students rather than living in a residential area. In student areas you get reasonable rates and a lot of (quirky) choices. In residential areas, even though the rent may be less, they usually charge high security deposits. Also metro connectivity is important if you live far from college and otherwise as well.

  1. UNNECESSARY SPACE – Do not choose places with plenty of rooms. It might sound good but it becomes a drag in the future. It is difficult to clean and maintain. Plus if you have extra space it invites extra, and sometimes unwanted company.

  1. INITIAL REPAIRS ARE SUPPOSED TO DONE BY THE LANDLORD AND NOT BY YOU – Always check if everything is in working order. Electrical sockets, plumbing and cupboards are a few things to keep in mind. Make sure nothing is broken or damaged. If anything needs to be fixed, immediately inform the landlord. Do not hesitate or wait around or you might have to do it yourself. Every apartment is supposed to be cleaned, repaired and painted before a new tenant moves in.

  1. GOVERNMENT WATER SUPPPLY VS BORING WELL WATER SUPPLY – Nowadays many apartments have boring water supply installed. This is preferable than using the government supply. Government supply has very specific timings and if you miss them, you have a water crisis. Few things are worse than water shortage. Boring on the other hand is available 24/7. But repair costs are high so one has to be responsible.

  1. FIRST HAND VS ON-RENT – The initial rush of having a place of your own will drive you buy a lot of unnecessary stuff. After all the apartment should look cool right? But spend easy. If you have a lot of stuff, it becomes difficult to move to a new place. Plus at the end of three years, you will have a lot of stuff which you cannot carry with you. ACs, coolers, fridge and almost everything is available on rent.

  1. EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS – I am not talking about Ambulance or police numbers. One always needs a plumber or an electrician and it is always handy to have a few numbers in your phone. You can ask at the local hardware stores for such services.

These are just a few tips. There are many things to learn like living on a budget, monthly account and learning to share with another person. Living in a place of your own is a different experience altogether and it is very enriching. It make you independent and responsible and can result in some of the best years of your college life. Hope you found this usefull!

A student pursuing Political science always deals with the question which someone or the other inevitably will put forth, that of joining the civil services. Civil services and  politics are one of the only few options people are usually aware about while studying political science. Today a score of options are available for students and the sky is the limit. With the right combination, one can be anything, from a lawyer to a radio journalist. Although holding the right degree might not always get you the right job. Nowadays, companies prefer job skills more than a piece of paper certifying your qualification.

As a Political Science student, one has to develop skills in four particular areas:

  • Communication
  • Research and Quantitative methods
  • Analysis
  • Planning and Development

These skills will prove crucial in landing them their dream job. A political science degree equips you with fine knowledge of how the government works and therefore qualifying one to take up any job that requires management and planning in the government and non government sector alike. A career in business and teaching are also available as options.

  • Government and Advocacy jobs – In this area one can work in a number of fields such as city planning, management and even intelligence. One can become a political scientist if analyzing political systems, studying the political mood and analyzing election results is what one finds appealing. As a political scientist one can also help private organizations and government draft policies in accordance to existing rules and regulations.
  • One can go for a career in Law – This usually entails enforcement of national and international rules, understanding the framework of operation within and outside the government, interpreting political ideas and use of analytical skills.
  • Lobbying –  Lobbying  the government on behalf of interest  groups or Non Governmental Organisations  are also options.  These jobs require a strong connection and cooperation with various stages of the government. As a lobbyist one can influence policy decisions and negotiate with elected officials. This usually requires a simple graduate degree although advanced degrees will help you stand out in the market.
  • Business and Entrepreneurship – A political science student can also have a career in business. Banking, advertising, personnel and public relations are available choices. Excellent verbal and communication skills are required to enter this line of work. Depending on the type of job, a good knowledge of working economics and computer skills also go a long way in ensuring a successful venture. A post graduate degree will qualify for a position in human resources and management. Those with advanced degrees are often consulted by major corporations.
  • Teaching positions – I’m mentioning this so as to not leave out anything obvious.  A political scientist can also hold a teaching position at universities and colleges. The goal of a political scientist is to analyse and evaluate everything within the sphere of political influence and a teaching position can prove to be very rewarding.
  • Research – Many researchers also hold teaching positions in universities and colleges. Usually universities, IT institutes, management institutes and the like, have research as a part of teaching.  One can also conduct research as a part of an NGO, university, business or advocacy sector. Some even conduct research as part of their entrepreneurial venture and have their own firms.
  • Journalism – A career in journalism is a well treaded path for many political science students.  Films, television, radio and other media are some of the available choices. One can easily apply for a job as a political correspondent and cover domestic and international policy. Jobs as Editors and  directors are also available in the media industry.
  • International Relations – For those aspirants who want to pursue a career with international agencies such as the UN and Global organizations such as WTO, or even transnational NGOs, a study of International Relations (IR) will provide a big boost to their opportunities.
  • Political Advisers Knowing the political system of the country like the back of your hand can have many advantages. One can become an adviser to politicians and parties and also help the government and the system by becoming a part of various think tank groups ensuring smooth and effective functioning of all units in the system.

Excellent written and oral skills are a must if you call yourself a political science graduate because the job skills one has to inculcate, over the years, are based on  these. A thorough knowledge on parliamentary procedures is also a must. Political science is a diverse subject having its nose in almost everything. Sometimes a good knowledge of human psychology also serves well. Since it is a social science, there can literally be no dearth of opportunities out there.  All one needs to do is find the right combination to land the perfect job for themselves.

It has been all over the news. Everyone, starting from bollywood celebrities to political parties, is talking about it. On 26th May, Tanmay Bhat, the co-founder of AIB released a snapchat video of Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar battling it out on how good a batsman Virat Kohli is. Expletives-laden, the video sparked an outrage among all the top brass and the general community too. The video was later taken off Snapchat but the Facebook post went viral.

Now, I believe that the video was over hyped and it deserves a passing glance at most. But an issue so insignificant has been blown so out of proportion, that voicing out opinions seems to be the necessary thing to do.

Here’s what happened: After a nice online thrashing by the public came the bollywood stars. Anupam Kher, especially, along with Riteish Deshmukh and Celina Jaitley condemned the video as disgusting and demeaning. Then the parties. MNS wanted to file an FIR and remove it from the online platform. One of their top leaders wanted to catch and beat the accused (Bhat) on the streets. Finally, the NCP’s women’s wing protested on the streets and burnt his effigy, which was the cherry on top.

We take our celebs and icons too seriously. That is a fact. Call Rajnikant a flop and not a single bus conductor will give you a ticket. But do we see Rajnikant fretting about who is calling him what? No. Because he simply does not care. A few people’s opinions is not going to change anything for him. That is what we need to understand. Defending one’s favourite choice is good. Burning an effigy is ridiculous. In all these days, neither Sachin nor Lata ji has made one comment on the matter. Because it does not affect them.

As for all the self righteous people out there, please shift your focus to more important things. We are living in an age where a snapchat story becomes the talk of the nation and a poor girl gang raped by  20 or more men does not even make a headline. Where farmers are commit suicide everyday because something about the Green Revolution was just not right. We are still living that era where the graver problems of the city are ignored and biscuit talk about social media trends is all that is going around.

What Tanmay was doing was simply poking fun at two iconic celebrities. It might have been a spur of the moment with, granted, very bad jokes but that was it. It was just a joke. But we have once again proved that any attempt at fun making of celebrities is not cool. Yes, India is very tolerant except for a few topics, which are taboo. Surprisingly, the list of taboos is ever increasing. So yes, we are very tolerant. But make fun of us and we will twitter slam you.

After three years of protesting, there finally appears a ray of hope.

The Delhi High Court on Monday, 2nd of May, demanded a response from Delhi University concerning the issue of rent regulation and hostel accommodation. It is after years, that a definitive action is being taken on the matter.  In a Public Interest Litigation, it was demanded from the varsity that they act on providing hostel accommodation to all the regular students and especially the ones coming from the weaker sections of the society.

Praveen Singh, a DU alumnus who has been at the forefront of the protests, has alleged that considering the number of student who get admission into DU every year, the number of hostel seats are far from accommodating. It has been repeatedly demanded from the University authorites and the Delhi government that there be adequate hostel facilities and rent regulation. Stipend for the students who do not get into hostels and opening up of the hostel mess for the non residential students are issues also included in the PIL.

The university counsel has been asked by a division bench comprising of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath to take action on the subject. A further hearing has been scheduled for July 18.

Project Title: To design an instrument or device capable of reducing emissions of Sox and NOx from motor vehicles.

Principle Investigators:

  1. Neha Sharma
  2. Divya Haridas
  3. Himanshu Kushwa
  4. Anil Sethi

Mentor: Dr. Leena Khanna ( Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University)

Student Members:

Harshit Goyal, Ridhima Bhandari, Rohit Bharti, Akshay, Aastha Jain, Mudit Aggarwal, Manoj Kumar, Nidhi Sakarwal, Cheshta Soni and Anmol Agnihotri.

One of the four projects awarded to Keshav Mahavidyalaya is taking on harmful gases like SO2 (sulphur dioxide) and NOx (nitrogen oxides) which are emitted from the exhaust of motor vehicles in abundance. These gases are the reason for acid rains, loss of soil fertility, chronic diseases like bronchitis and asthma, skin infections and many other major problems the world is facing today. Surveys have shown that shows that about 35% of children in India are suffering from asthma, out of which 40% are from Delhi. This alone shows that there is an urgent need to stop/reduce emissions of these gases.

Project Code KM-304 is working on to reduce emissions of these gases. They have come up with a rather innovative way of doing so. They passed the gases emitted by the silencer of a diesel car, via tube in a bottle containing slurry of a calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2), by the process known as bubbling. This process was carried out for 30 minutes. Finally the slurry was tested. It was realised that if SO2 is present in exhaust gas then it will react with slurry to form calcium sulphite. On testing for sulphite ion the result was positive, hence concluding reduction of SO2 from the exhaust of that diesel car. That also resulted in reduced production of smoke out of that car, which was proved by a pollution checking center of vehicles at a fuel pump.

Although they have tasted success, the project is still in its initial steps. Work is going on to increase the efficiency of the product and also working on reduction of NOx. If all goes well, the product might be  commercialised.

The students showed their gratefulness to the authorities of the University of Delhi for giving them this opportunity to work for the good of mankind.

8000 musician’s from musical symphony and 650 drummers from Africa also took part in this event. Arvind Kejriwal along with his cabinet, few Union ministers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the event and tweeted a few words in praise as well.

Even so, for all its greatness, the event did not manage to please everyone.  The heavy rainfall, improper lighting and lack of proper management put the thousands of followers gathered there in  difficult position. Adding to mismanagement, there were accusations of causing ecological damage to the Yamuna floodplain and a committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) recommended a hefty fine of 1200 million which was later reduced to 50 million.

There are many voicing their strong opinion against the WCF and the ecological damage done to the Yamuna flood plains. I believe that the Art of Living foundation is doing a very good job although doing things in a different way could have been a viable course of action. Instead of choosing a site as controversial as the Yamuna flood plains they could have avoided it altogether. Also, there were many people and national dailies complaining about the huge amount of garbage left behind and its amazing that nobody bothered when there were heaps of garbage after the Commonwealth Games but when Sri Sri Ravi Shankar held a mega cultural event suddenly people were all touchy about the Yamuna. But that is not even an issue because it is just hypocrisy all over again.

There is just one issue which I want to highlight. That is the issue of not organising the event under a roof. The past few days, Delhi has been seeing rainfall quite often and i think the same should have been on the minds of the volunteers as well. I see management as the only issue with the festival. I just do not feel it is fair if people travel from around the world to perform at an event and are met with difficulties in basic necessities.

Ramjas College crossed a landmark and entered into the 100th year of its journey on January 17, 2016. Passing another milestone of a splendid journey, The college Principal Dr. Rajendra Prasad, along with his esteemed teaching staff paid tribute to Rai Kedarnath, the founder of this prestigious institution. To celebrate its history of neutral attitude towards all faiths and beliefs, the college began its 100th year with an All-faith Prayer, where representatives of 8 religions were welcomed to recite and perform their respective rituals. In a gala of three day celebrations, this is how the celebration unfolded:

Day one. 17th January

With an introductory speech, commemorating the glorious history and heritage of the college by Dr. Suchitra Gupta, the event started. The All-faith Prayer Meet included prayers of 8 different religions performed in an alphabetical order: Baha’ism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism and Sikhism. It was evident how each religion propagates the message of peace and humanity where it doesn’t divide, rather unite people in a sacred bond.

After the prayers, a classical performance by the students of Ramjas College Dance society, In-Step adorned the stage to memorise the crowd with a beautiful amalgamation of Bharatnatyam, Kathak and Sattriya. The first day of the three-day celebrations saw its last performance by the band, Rangrez, consisting of students of Ramjas Music society, Backbeat. The instrumental performance by the band mesmerised the audience.

Dr. Suchitra ended the Day-I of this super-colossal festival by glorifying the 100 year heritage that is deep seated. To quote her beautiful words:

“badi tab diliyan aayien hain apne aap mein, par ae Ramjas College aadat nahi gayi tujhe yaad karne ki”

The day concluded with a brunch, marking the end of day-I of the centennial celebrations.

Day two, 18th January:

With enthusiasm began the second day of the celebration in Ramjas College, where the students enjoyed a Tonga Ride, a cyclothon, presence of eminent guests and the performances by the budding talents of the college. The students were entertained and an exuberant mix of badges as souvenirs with the sweatshirts and caps of the college,  encouraging the heights achieved by the institution.

A Tonga ride and a cyclothon initiated the celebration, reminiscing the historic memory of the inauguration of the college by MahatmaGandhi who travelled in a Tonga during the non-cooperation movement. After the Tonga Ride and the cyclothon, the college welcomed the chief Guest Lt. Gov. Shri Najeeb Jung, Hon’ble Justice Dr. Mukundakam Sharma (Retd.), a proud alumnus of the college, and the chairman of the governing bodySh. Anil Aggarwal.

The chief guest hoisted the college flag and the centennial logo of the college was also launched. The audience was then inspired by the Brilliant speech by Sh. Anil Aggarwal who then introduced Mukundakam Sharma to the crowd. He addressed the audience and talked about how great it feels to be a part of an institution that has served in educating young minds for a hundred years.

The honourable Principal, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who has been serving Ramjas College for the past 31 years as the principal, addressed the convocation proclaiming that Ramjas was founded to fulfil the needs of ordinary people in terms of education. He added that a hundred years is more than a number, it’s a legacy. He also enlightened the students by exploring the golden past of the college. The chief guest of the day, Lt. Gov. Shri Najeeb Jung, shared his college memories and made Ramjasites proud by saying, “We all are living in moment of history.” A vote of thanks of the Vice-Principal Dr. Nalini Nigam, thanked all the dignities who had spared their precious time to be the part of this gracious event. Thousands of balloons were released by the Ramjas fraternity to celebrate the merry-making. An entertaining and enthralling Sapera-Been Vaadan by Jai Karan and Party left the spectators spell-bound. The Dance Society, In-Step and the Fashion Society, Rampage gave mesmerizing performances, finally leading to a lavishing lunch for all Ramjasites. This is how the super-colossal and ravishing day-II of the celebration came to an end.

Third Day, 19th January:

The Third day of Centennial Celebrations began with a multi cuisine food plaza in the space behind the college grounds. A number of different stalls were set up by big brands like Feeding India, Mad Monkey , Starco Junction, Dominoes and Kwality Wall’s. Stalls like Kake Di Hatti, Roll Corner, a maggi stall by Kake’s, Nav Jyoti Kulfi Stall and Bhushan Chaat Bhandar also featured among the 18 stalls in the food plaza. All food was subsidised by the college and were available at cheap rates to all.

The food plaza began early and the band performances leading up to Papon, the most awaited event of the night, followed next. Rangreez, came on stage to sway the crowd to their rhythmic beats. With a Cajon Box Drum to add to their uniqueness, the college band was a definite hit with the crowd. Following Rangreez was another performance to a song called Eagles Nest from the Sound Of Music. Introduced as one the Principal’s favourites, it was a soulful performance. Delhi based, The Revisit Project performed next. With Nishant Nagar on the saxophone adding a unique twist, theirs was crowd pleaser as well. Next  came the multi genre hindi band Astitva which was founded in 2007 in Ramjas College itself. With a magical blend of rock, jazz and Hindustani classical and soulful lyrics, they mixed well with the crowd and rocked the performance. They proved to be the biggest hit before Papon.

Then the most awaited performance of the evening, Papon and The East India Company, finally came on stage and the crowd went wild even as Papon Da came on stage. Papon is member and founder of the multi talented Assamese band East India Company. With Brin Desai on live electronics, Jinti on lead guitar, Karan from Bombay on percussion, Dipu on bass and Tanmay on drums, they were one of the biggest hit Ramjas and probably Delhi University, has had in years. They crowd swayed, danced and sang to their every song. With hits like Banao Banao, Jhumur, Tukari and the beat of Bortaal, they had everyone dancing till the end. It was definitely one of the most energetic performances Ramjas has had in years. The show came to an end by 9:30 pm.

With this the inaugural function of the Centennial Celebrations came to an  end. This would definitely be of the most remembered three day events in the history of Ramjas and also in the history of Delhi University as well.
