Youth Forum on Foreign Policy, an independent and non-partisan initiative instituted to promote substantive dialogue on India’s foreign policy amongst the youth, organized a visit to the Lower House of the Parliament of India on the 9th of December 2015. A delegation of thirty students across various disciplines and colleges of Delhi were invited to participate in the same.

The legislative agenda for the Parliament, meeting between November 26th and December 23rd for the Winter Session includes 19 Bills currently pending for consideration and passage and 14 new Bills have been proposed to be introduced as well. These include The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill 2014, The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill 2014, The Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2014, The Child Labour (Prohibition and Prevention) Bill 2012, The Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority Bill 2015, The National Commission for Women Bill (NCW) 2015, The Anti Maritime Piracy Bill, 2015 and several others pertaining to vital issues for consideration in national interest. Recent developments, however, concerning the National Herald Case which holds the Congress Party President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi in the eye of the storm resulted in both Houses returning to familiar scenes of chaos and disruptions after a week of uncharacteristically civil debates. The afternoon hour on Wednesday scheduled to discuss the ‘The Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Bill, 2015’ staggered through the debate session, to be adjourned multiple times owing to successive disruptions.

This, however, allowed the participants of the scheduled visit to witness democracy at its finest strand of controverted discussions, strengthened through part dissension, part agreement, probably more the former than the latter, in the crucible of Indian politics, the soul of the commonwealth, the Lok Sabha. YFFP looks forward to the opportunity of organizing many such engaging events in future, aligning with the spirit of its inception.
