Have you ever wondered which smartphone is the perfect one? Is it the Samsung Galaxy S6? Is it the OnePlus 2? LG G4? Nexus 6? HTC One M9?

I, for one, can’t pick one of these because all of them have a couple of nagging little flaws. The S6 has poor battery life and no expandable storage. The OnePlus 2 doesn’t have NFC. The G4 has LG’s horrible android skin. The Nexus 6 is just plain huge and also has a subpar camera. The HTC One M9 tends to overheat. Since none of the phones on the market fit my version of ‘The Perfect Smartphone,’ I decided to create my own smartphone. These are the features I would borrow from today’s flagships –

Body

In terms of pure looks, nothing beats the iPhone 6. It looks premium, feels sturdy and is durable enough to survive minor falls.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a beautiful 5.1 inch Super AMOLED 2K display. Viewing angles are great, colours are sharp and vivid, and brightness is more than enough for outdoor use.

Speakers

HTC’s BoomSound speakers are without a doubt the best on the market. Front-facing, Loud, Crisp and Clear.

Battery

I’d take the 3900 mAh, beast of a battery, from the Motorola Droid Turbo which would last for 30-35 hours of regular without breaking a sweat.

Storage

Storage is something we just can’t get enough of, so I’d opt for the 128 GB storage from the iPhone 6 but I’d also throw in an expandable Micro SD card slot to increase storage up to 256GB.

Performance

The OnePlus 2 is probably the best performing smartphone out there, both in terms of benchmarks and real world testing. The octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, coupled with 4 GB of RAM and the Adreno 430 GPU make for a buttery smooth gaming and multi-tasking experience.

Camera

This was a tricky one, and I wrestled with whether I wanted the iPhone 6 Plus’ camera or the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S6. Both cameras are fantastic, especially the one on the iPhone, but it’s only 8 megapixels which means no 4K recording. Gotta have 4K though! So I ended up choosing the one on the S6. However, I’d still want the image processing from the iPhone just to compensate for the over-saturation that Samsung’s sensor is notorious for.

So there you have it. My version of the perfect smartphone. What’s yours?

Every few months there comes along a new artist who’s touted as the ‘Next Big Thing in Music’. Ashley Frangipane, better known by her stage name Halsey, is that and much more. When you listen to the young New Jersey-born musician, you can hear the grandiose statements it’s trying to make while still remaining incredibly personal.

With her debut album ‘Badlands’ out this week, here’s three reasons why she should be your favourite already:

  1. Her musicianship:

The young 20 year old isn’t just masterful at writing heart-wrenching lyrics but also binds it up in haunting, subtle melodies around concepts that will make you change your perspective. Calling her a provocateur won’t be unfair since she proclaims herself as one. From the lyrics of her breakout single “Ghost” (I like the sad eyes, bad guys/ Mouth full of white lies/ Kiss me in the corridor/ But quick to tell me goodbye) to the less melodious, more conceptual sound of her latest release “Drive”, everything this aqua-haired woman does is bound to make people look up and pay attention. Billboard describes the vibe of her music as combining, “.. the synthy darkness of Lorde, the neon-pop chutzpah of Miley Cyrus and the flickering film noir of Lana Del Rey.”

  1. Her fearlessness:

It takes guts to be a beginner in a cut-throat industry and proclaim yourself as ‘inconvenient’, but Halsey is abrasively real, if not anything else. She isn’t everyone’s dream version of the popstars we’re accustomed to- the much-adored, clean, easy to market over-the-top celebrities that media laps up nowadays. Halsey’s past has been shrouded with drug abuse and severe issues with her mental health, something she isn’t afraid to speak out about. She recently took on the New York Times for what she called a blatant misquote in her interview about “identifying as a tri-bi” (bisexual, biracial, suffering from Bipolar Disorder). The singer says that’s who she is, not something she ‘identifies’ as. It’s a strong statement to make against a giant publication, but not something she’s unused to.

  1. Her debut album:

Badlands, that released on August 28, is one of those records that send you exactly to the mind-space it was meant to. Written as a concept record, ‘Badlands’, is a collective name of a fictional dystopian setting inspired by mega cities like Las Vegas and Tokyo- the hub of life but also power-structures and hedonism. If that doesn’t make you curious, the few songs already released as singles from the album- “Ghost”, “Hold Me Down”, “Drive” and “New Americana” should.

Every year more than 1.5 lakh students join School of Open Learning, many of whom migrate from regular colleges. What drives students to take this decision?

One of the most common reasons is that as students get promoted to higher semesters, the pressure of college attendance takes a toll on their career aims. Unable to handle the tuitions along with regular classes, the School of Open Learning witnesses a lot of migrations. A number of professional courses like Charted Accountancy and Actuarial Sciences, to name a few, demand work experience or articleship before students can move to higher levels. This is impossible to continue with regular classes and so SOL or correspondence becomes the only option for students intent on completing the course with their degree.

Many students enroll themselves in Delhi University to experience the carefree and fun life that the colleges in DU seem to offer. Being a part of SOL takes that away- the fests, the societies, the friends, and everything else. But it does give students plenty of time to focus on life ahead and excel in their professional course of choice.

SOL and regular colleges give a student the same platform except that regular colleges give students a sense of satisfaction of studying under the aegis of Delhi University, while SOL doesn’t. The criteria to enter management institutes like the IIMs and ISBs are the same for both, School of Open Learning and regular DU colleges, thus motivating students even from “top” colleges like SRCC and Hans Raj to take the leap.

But the fact that a degree isn’t always sufficient to propel students to positions they are capable of, and that the environment of a college does do plenty to ready a student for life after college, the decision to shift to School of Open Learning must be backed with unrelenting motivation and hard work.

The first half of 2015 saw some successful Hollywood releases like Mad Max: Fury Road, Furious 7, Inside Out, etc. While fans are getting more excited about 2016 which offers the release of Suicide Squad and Batman V/S Superman, a lot of movies still wait to release this year. Following is a list of the most anticipated movies of the second half of 2015.

1. The Martian

Releasing in October, 2015 and directed by Ridley Scott, this is a science-fiction movie based on its namesake novel. Matt Damon plays the role of Mark Watney who is the protagonist. He is a lone survivor on Mars when his colleagues pronounce him dead after getting caught in a fierce storm. But with minimal supplies, he learns how to grow food, send messages back to earth and in his exact words, he tries to “science the shit out of it”.

2. Everest

After giving a brilliant performance in “Nightcrawler”, Jake Gyllenhall is back with another thriller. This time, he isn’t an insane thief running around at night trying to get violence captured in a camera, but a climber. Based on the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, Gyllenhall plays the role of Scott Fischer who led one of the survival expeditions in this disaster. The other expedition was led by Rob Hall played by Jason Clarke. Releasing in September, 2015, the cast also includes Kiera Nightley, James Brolin, and Robin Wright.

3. The Revenant

Inspired by the life and adventures of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass, this movie is a revenge story set in 1820s. Leonardo di Caprio plays the role of Glass and is mauled by a bear, leaving him injured and unconscious. His comrades including Tom Hardy rob him and leave him behind to take his last breath. Glass instead gets alright and decides to take revenge. The film is set to release in December and will feature Caprio fighting with the rest of the cast in some intense scenes shot in a wintry land.

4. Regression

Directed by Alejandro Amenabar, this is a psychological thriller with Emma Waston and Ethan Hawke in the lead roles. Hawke plays the role of Detective Bruce Kenner who investigates a case in Minnesota. The case is about a local resident John Gray who knows that he has sexually abused his 17 year old daughter played by Emma Watson, but does not remember doing it. The movie was set to release on August 20, but might get delayed to some other month.

Q. As the outgoing DUSU Vice President, how satisfying was your experience and what challenges did you come across?

Ans: My experience was very different and not as I expected it to be. As the Vice-President and DUSU a representative, I understood that students put a lot of faith in us to take important steps and decisions. With power comes the responsibility to fulfil people’s expectations. When we are unable to do so, students do show disappointment. However, we tried to deliver our best and we did as much as we could.

Q. This year, AAP’s newly found student wing – Chatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti is also contesting the DUSU polls. Does this hinder ABVP’s chances to get back to positions again? What is your stategy?

Ans: Indeed they have planned to contest in the polls, however we remain calm and aren’t intimidated by anyone’s entry in the polls. As far as ABVP and its strategy is concerned, we believe in taking the politically experienced lot to contest for the elections and plan to do the same this year as well.

dingWhat the current office bearers had to say when they first came into power last year

Q. Any advice for future office bearers who seek to achieve many goals for the University?

Ans. One learns a lot while being in position. One should know that we can’t fulfil all our goals but at the same time this shouldn’t deter us to try and achieve them. I feel every year new challenges emerge and they’ll learn with the flow.

Q. What do you think have been the achievements of DUSU in your tenure?

Ans. We tried to make the life of students hassle free. South Campus started a new bus service, we protested against unjust University guidelines from time to time, the scrapping of FYUP being the major example. We weren’t just limited to these things but had a more holistic approach in making a student’s life at DU better. Hopefully our efforts held some significance.

Third Space Collective (TSC), a theatre group based in Delhi recently performed a small preview of their latest production ‘Dastan-e-Bhookh’, an adaption of American author Sam Sheperd’s path-breaking play ‘Curse of the Starving Class’ at Greater Kailash-2 on the 28th of August.

‘Curse of the Starving Clas’s is a dark and comic exploration of a family’s psyche in the style of absurdism. The original play focuses on the dysfunctional Tate clan. A drunken dreamer of a father, burned out mother, rebellious teenage daughter and an idealistic son are the characters in the family and who are the focus of the play. The production aims to draw attention to the ominous bulldozer buzzing ominously, 100 ft away from the run down house of this squabbling family. It pushes the viewers to ask the whys of the demise of the family unit rather than the ‘whats’. The hunger, ever present in the household is a constant reminder of all that’s missing in their lives. Devoid of any real understanding of what has pushed them into this malfunctionality, the family pursues their attempts at pulling themselves out, mindlessly grabbing at whatever their persecutors throw at them.

Brilliantly directed and executed, the play emerges as thought provoking  and intelligent and the equally brilliant use of props will have you sitting throughout watching in rapt attention.

Third Space Collective is a group of theatre practitioners creating theatre which is of relevance to the times we live in. Their core idea is to actively push themselves to use all available resources at hand to create performances. Dastaan-e-Bhookh has been under production for about five months and they are finally ready to perform a series of shows.

They will be performing at Akshara theatre near RML hospital, Connaught Place on 3rd, 10th and 11th of September. Passes will be available on these dates from 4 pm to 7 pm.

As the director, Dhwani Vij had to say, ” Set in the outskirts of Delhi, the production peers in to the very-obvious-but-swept-under-the-carpet-reality of hyper urbanization which is vicariously gnawing away at the rural settlements in and around the city. The road to reach the stage has been long and magnificent for this production. I am really excited to know how Delhi will react  to our attempt“.

The Delhi University Kerala Students’ Association, Maithry, organised an inter college football tournament for students from Kerala on the 27th and 28th of August. The league took place at Hindu College. While attracting a lot of students, the event witnessed participation by about eight teams constituting students from different college of the varsity. The uniqueness of the event was that it was a three-a-side tournament with each team having just three players and each match lasting for twenty minutes.

The qualifier round on day 1 eliminated half the teams. Finally, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hindu College, Zakir Hussain College and Faculty of Law made it to the semi-finals. On the second day after the semi-final and final round, Faculty of Law became the winners after defeating Hindu College. The winners were awarded a glittering trophy along with certificates by the President of Maithry, Abdul Aseeb. Everybody could be seen in high spirits simply because of their common love for the game!

About the association: Maithry organizes a plethora of events all year round including various festivities. The Onam celebrations are a big hit among the Keralites, attracting a great footfall every year. The association also holds grand celebrations as the fresher’s party as well as the farewell party for graduating students. They even provide need-based scholarships for meritorious students catering to their needs. Activities like these help the students to showcase the mutual interests and enthusiasm shared by them for their culture, practices and hobbies. We hope Maithry continues to host more such events in future that help the students to reconcile every now and then.

Q. Hi Sex Amma, I’ve been with my girlfriend for 10 months now and we’ve barely hit third base. I understand that she wants to take it slow and I don’t want to pressurize her, but of late, the frequency is decreasing!

Sex Amma: Oh my dear uttapam, Amma knows the plague that infests the minds of men in this country. Hitting the third base in a cricket crazy nation is all that men want, ignoring the weather and pitch conditions, thus getting out on the very first ball or eventually getting forced to play defensive.
Amma appreciates the fact that you understand that your macchhi wants to take it slow. The decreasing frequency suggests that the macchhi is either feeling guilty or has gotten scared due to the misunderstandings and taboo that accompany sex in our beloved nation. In any case, the solution is: communication.
You need to sit her down in an environment where she can speak to you about anything. And, if it’s a biological reason, then be a strong fisherman, be there for your macchhi and support her through the tough time. Build a strong bridge of communication and trust, and Amma guarantees you’ll start scoring again, singles and doubles at first, of course. Don’t lose your patience, else you’ll misjudge the ball and will be ‘caught’ out.

“I just don’t have time right now,” said every Type-A person ever. As a solution, we urge you to gift this book to them. It’s a promise that they’ll thank you for gifting them this book weaved with an inspiring message.

When you see ‘The Time Keeper’ by American Best-seller ‘Mitch Albom’ kept on the bookshelf, you’ll probably think it’s a non-fiction book about time management. Then you’d read the synopsis at the back of the book and realize it’s a fiction story. However, once you finish devouring this book in an evening or two, you’re left behind with a heart-warming story, your own perspective of time and an unforgettable truth – the true value of time.
Mitch Albom weaves together three supposedly unrelated life paths to make us stop and think. One is of a love-starved teenage girl living in the era of social media who gets humiliated by her crush wanting to end her time, an aged billionaire down with cancer wanting to buy some more time, and ‘Father Time’ who’s story will leave you thinking about the very notion of counting seconds.

Albom adopts an abbreviated style to narrate his story, making any reader feel like they went through just 50 pages instead of 240. He adds a unique combination of mythology, reality, fantasy, science, and of course – makes us realize how ‘time flies’.
If you ever hear yourself say phrases like “It’s too late”, “I don’t have time”, “just some more time”, “Five more minutes” – Then perhaps, you too could give this book your time.
