Tempest, the annual cultural fest of Miranda House marked its end on 28th Feb, 2015. This three – day long fest saw a number of performances, events and competitions. Despite a few technical glitches, Tempest ’15 proved to be a success. Here’s a look at the highlights of this year’s fest of Miranda House.
DAY 1: Inauguration, Stage Play and Classical Solo
Tempest, started on 26th February, with teachers and union members of the college inaugurating the fest. The teachers and the students of the college union lit the lamp and became a part of an informal photo session during the inauguration ceremony. Following the inauguration, the first day of Tempest witnessed several competitions which included the stage play finals and classical solo music competition.
The classical solo music competition at the fest was won by Saptak Chatterjee of Hans Raj College. The second and third positions were bagged by Apoorva Tiwari, LSR and Anshuman Bhattacharya, Faculty of Music.
The day also saw the stage play competition which displayed performances from various colleges including Hindu College, Hans Raj College and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Evening). After the performance, the judges told the audience that they had to face much difficulty while deciding the winner. Finally, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Evening) with their production ‘Illhaam’ was announced to be the winner. Kamal Kishore of Hans Raj College was adjudged the best actor along with the lead actor of Ilhaam.
DAY 2: Tarangini, Western Vocals (group and solo) and Band Night by Sanam
‘Orpheus’, the western music society of the college organised the western vocals (group and solo) competitions. The performances, starting early in the day, were enjoyable and the winners’ positions were thoroughly contested for. The western music group event saw LSR taking the first position. The performance by the group from Kamala Nehru College received a special mention by the judges. Following this was western music solo competition, which had Shivash from Hans Raj College declared as the winner. Shivong (Sri Aurobindo College) and Emmy (SRCC) bagged the second and third positions, respectively. The judges for the events were Nilotpal Sinha, founder of House of Symphony and Ritwik Dey, a musician in the Indie psychedelic band ‘MindFlew’ and the electronic outfit ‘Tankbund’.
Mridang, the Indian Dance Society of Miranda House organised the folk dance competition – ‘Tarangini’. It was judged by Shruti Sinha (Kathak dancer and choreographer) and Kanchan Rathoria (alumni of Shanti Niketan, national level dancer and choreographer). While the competition saw participation from colleges like Sri Venkateshwara College and IP College, it was SGND Khalsa College to be declared as the winner. Gargi College bagged the second position in the competition.
The second day of Tempest was brought to a bright end by the performance of the band ‘Sanam’, with their lead singer Sanam Puri. The band performed a few original songs but mostly stuck to covers of popular Bollywood songs, warming up with soft numbers like ‘Dua’, ‘Ore Piya’ and ‘Ishq Bulava’ and then progressing to more foot-tapping songs like ‘Chal Mitthi Mitthi Bol’, ‘Saddi Gali’ and ‘Badtameez Dil’ amongst others. The performance was loved and enjoyed by the audience, with girls chanting out Sanam Puri’s name throughout.
DAY 3: Battle of Bands, Indian Choir, Burlesque, Halla Bol and the Star Night with Sona Mohapatra
The last day of Tempest saw 6 Bands competing in the Battle of Bands. Each band had 15 minutes to perform including their preliminary sound check. The judges for this event were Mrs. Subhadra Kamath and Mr. Amarthanga Chiru. Mrs. Kamath is a well known indie artist and has worked with Tank Bund (A Music Association). On the other hand, Mr. Chiru is a lead singer and composer for the band called “Blending Chords”. The results were declared and The HansRaj Projekt stood first, followed by Rangrez and PaperBoat ( St. Stephen’s College).
Following this, the Indian Choir competition was held which had Kamala Nehru College emerge as the winner, followed by Sri Venkateswara College at second position. The third position was shared by Gargi College, IP College and SSCBS. Mahavir (SSCBS) and Manohar (Hindu College), the accompanists, received a special mention from the judge’s side.
‘Halla Bol’, the street-play competition organised by ‘Anukriti’, the Hindi dramatics society of Miranda House was also held on Day 3 of Tempest. Nine shortlisted teams performed street-plays all through the morning in the lawns of the college. SGGS with their production ‘Hum Gum Ho Gaye’ won the competition. Gargi College and IP College for Women were tied as second position holders. The award for best actor was jointly bagged by Amit Tiwari from Shivaji College and Vidushi Verma from Hindu College.
‘Burlesque’, the western group dance competition at Tempest ’15 hit off with crazy cheering from the audience. As the participants set the stage on fire, the judge, Mr. Tarun Sharma was presented with a tough decision to crown the winners. The competition saw participation from colleges such as JMC, Hans Raj College and Maitreyi College. Though after a rough competition, ‘Verve’ from Sri Venkateswara College stood first along with ‘Funk In Motion’ from Maharaja Agrasen as second position holders.
The fest ended with a pulsating performance by Sona Mohapatra. With songs like ‘Jugni’ , ‘Bekhauf Azaad Hai’, ‘Ambarsariya’ and ‘Daav Laga’, her performance was all about “Celebrating all the female fire flies out there”. Coming towards the end, the performance was marked by colorful fireworks which pumped up the enthusiasm of the crowd to another level.

Thus, Tempest 2015 came to a satisfying end for the organizers as well as the audience.
